This comes from one of the oldest Sufi's, Jalaludin Rumi. It is a very strict discipline. I have seen it practiced in San Francisco. The sema produces an ecstacy and a direct experience of the divine. They find their center when they spin and don't get dizzy. Could you spin for 2 hours at a time ? Many of these pepole have been doing this since childhood.

I think it is said that the Turkish government still considers Dervish (mevlevi) illegal. The government only allows it to demonstrated as a folk dance for tourists.
Lynne Snyder You are mistaken. It is legal and there are plenty of places you can see this in Turkey. I do not know how you get this idea but it is very legal and you can practice it in every where and you will not get reaction from any one
In 1954 the Mevlevi were given partial rights to perform semâ in public but primarily because it was important as a tourist attraction for Turkey, but as a Sufi order they are still banned.
