    1:14:57 by playing kroxa you're letting your opponent untap when you know thay have guile/trophy which get them immediately back in the game, even ahead actually, so saccing the land to draw while they're tapped out seemed the best play to me. Also even if you miss, you still have mana up to activate ravine, so it seemed like a high reward/no drawback play.

    • @ettoreozzy9932

    I think in that Niv-to-Light match, you had to go for the win on that turn. Too many live draws on their end, plus their cards in hand, means that if you let them untap, they have to mess up pretty badly in order for you to win. Super super tough decisions, but 5 outs to win is probably better odds than what you had passing the turn.

      So, it's actually more than just the 5 outs right? Because if you go all in you can draw a second time off the peatland and have another look, this time at 3 outs. So you've got roughly 20% to win

    Let me preface this by saying yes, obviously, Reid is a better Magic player than me. This is just a little hindsight on a few small errors probably due to him not being familiar with the matchup.
    1:15:14 I really don't like this play. Playing Kroxa basically means they're just discarding Yorion. If they have the chance to play out their whole hand, they've already won. I'm not just saying this because Reid happened to draw the W6 for lethal, just that with the cards the opponent had in hand, it was just 2 mana do nothing.
    I also think the line at 1:17:13 was wrong. Reid should have pinged, and then played the second W6 right away. This would have forced the opponent, after the second minus, to Kaya's Guile for just gain 4 and make a 1/1, instead of being able to use it as a removal spell for the ravine. Now, since Reids hand would have been empty, they could choose to entwine to remove the graveyard still, and block with the 1/1 instead of not entwining and trophying the ravine, but then Reid still has the ravine in play and doesn't have to worry about the 1/1.

    • @chanm01

      Reid is my favorite player. Love the way he shares his thought process and his willingness to consider alternate lines. But I completely agree with both of your points. (Especially the 2nd one, since a similar pattern had already happened once earlier in the same game when Reid had tried to Inquisition OP's hand.)

    • @jetzine00
      @jetzine00 3 года назад +2

      @@chanm01 How can anyone say that they love the way he shares his thought process when he is silent for 75% of the video? He barely shares his thought process in any of his videos and I honestly find it to be infuriating. You can leave a Reid Duke video on and actually forget whether or not it's paused. The second example shows this perfectly. There are multiple ways to play that situation. Maybe @candlehawk is right, but the way Reid played it left him with an extra W6. It would have been great to hear him work it out verbally for us. You can FEEL him thinking about it, but so often we are left wondering why he does what he does because he's so deep in the tank that he forgets he's making a video.

    • @ramuzzini69
      @ramuzzini69 3 года назад

      I agree with both of these points as well. I initially thought Kroxa was a good play just to setup for a future turn but then realized how ineffective and unlikely that was. When Reid mentioned his outs available, I found myself screaming at the iPad for him to go for the win. 5-6 outs to draw to is the only way to win this game. You should always be playing to win. The decision is to do so patiently or aggressively. In this case, aggressively was the only chance.

      I think the kroxa play had no future benefits. crack peatland, ravine attack, could have used to w6 to re-buy that peatland for another chance next turn as well.

    Hey Reid! In the Niv Mizzet match you asked us to comment what our thoughts were about the different lines, without using the benefit of hind sight, so I’ll lay out what I was thinking and what my decision was.
    I see two reasonable lines here, crack the peatland and see if you draw a win the game card, if not then (most likely) continue on with the raging ravine plan, or the other line to play Kroxa and then continue with the raging ravine plan.
    In the video you listed out your potential winning draws if you cracked peatland, you also stepped through what was likely to happen if you attacked with ravine and picked it up with Wrenn and Six. I don’t think Kroxa was given enough thought: playing Kroxa had little upside, we knew their hand and could be pretty confident they’d discard Yorion, and that they had access to Kaya’s Guile to deal with the graveyard.
    The Ravine plan as laid out did not shape up to be a winning line, it was going to need some help, and Kroxa was not enough. For this reason I believe drawing was the best out, even if the next card weren’t one of the winning cards.

    • @WaddleJrJr
      @WaddleJrJr 3 года назад

      I do also have a smaller critique from earlier in the video too.
      When you were deciding when to fetch in response to the opponent’s turn one Goblin Guide, I believe your answer may have fallen victim to a gambler’s fallacy.
      The decision you came to revolved around the idea that it was less likely that you’d have two lands stacked on top of your deck, however I do not think the randomization process is affected much in this way, the cards (for the most part) don’t particularly care what their neighbors are.
      I think the more impactful effect was removing a land from your deck before the goblin guide trigger, lowering the chances that it hits and a second land gets removed before your draw step, versus if you fetch after the trigger then you had a higher chance of hitting and going into your draw step with 2 less lands in your deck, instead of just 1 less. You also get the side benefit of seeing your top card before deciding you want to shuffle, you very likely did want to shuffle no matter what as to get a tapped shock land, but I think it’s worth considering if there’s anything in your deck that you wouldn’t want to shuffle away.
      I’d be curious to see what the math of this looks like!
      Anyways these were just a couple minor lines that really pulled me in while watching. Jund is super interesting and the fact that I had so much to say about two very, very tiny decisions says something about how complex it is!
      Great play and great commentary as always, thank you for an enjoyable and insightful video!

    Based on your question in game 3 (whether to crack the nurturing peat land). I think it was definitely better to crack the land as your only alternative was to play kroxa. At the time, I think it is fair to say that Kroxa would not have done anything for you as they had a Kaya's Guile in hand and would've exiled him next turn. So the decision was to pay 2 mana and take the 12.5% chance to win the game (by drawing a card) or to pay 2 mana to make your opponent discard a card when they have 4 or more cards in hand.

    Best modern content out there, so happy to see this pop up.
    Edit: Is it LSV that preaches “always play to your outs”? I forget but that’s been stuck in my head since someone mentioned that and with that mantra in mind I likely would have tried to nurturing peatland on that crucial turn. I do often give up too early in tough games like that though, so I can totally see taking the more conservative line.

  • @TheUnicornCZ
    @TheUnicornCZ 3 года назад +1

    I like cracking the peatland because if you miss not playing Kroxa is not that big of a deal. Also the odds are 12,5% to hit which seems high considering that opponent has us outvalued and Kaya's seems backbraking. To be fair opting for that play is much easier now if you know that it would actually win you the game so I might be wrong but that would be the reasoning.

    First love to see your videos and your explanations on the plays and the way you are seeing the game. In that game that u don’t crack the land to draw I thing u should have. I say that not by seeing the wren on top but because in that moment kroxa didn’t seem to any difference. I knew he will play kaya, so kroxa would be exile and a discard a card. Crack the land could give u the game and kroxa later maybe would do some difference. Just my humble opinion from Portugal. :)

    Love seeing you (Reid) playing Jund, or modern in general for that matter!
    I definitely think cracking the peatland on that crucial turn against the Niv Mizzet player would have been the correct play. Not because hitting one of the five outs was super likely, but because the alternative, playing kroxa, was just too bad. You had no graveyard to speak of, and attacking the opponent´s hand by letting them discard one card of their choice there was just futile, since they most likely would have had something good to play on every turn for the rest of the game anyway. So I think racking peatland would have been the higher-percentage play, even if you don´t hit one of the five perfect cards.

  • @OnlyBadSalmon
    @OnlyBadSalmon 3 года назад

    Just some thoughts: Around 41:00 against the burn deck, you tap out for Liliana and discard Seasoned Pyromancer stating you don’t think the game will go long enough for you to play it. But (draw depending) would slamming it next turn not be the better option? It puts Kroxa along with another card in the graveyard, creates at least 1 token, and gets you to see more cards. Along with better selection of what to discard to Lili. Seems better than making them discard just one card. Obviously your plan was complete denial of your opponents resources, and it worked, but I couldn’t help by thinking there was only more upside to casting the pyromancer.

  • @blackout4747
    @blackout4747 3 года назад

    I think the Niv game, it was correct to crack the peatland. The real question was what to do with the 2 mana. He knew all the cards his opponent had, so the Kroxa wasn't an effective play.
    He also could have redrawn the peatland rather than the raging since attacking seemed to not be a way to win anymore

    At 1:33:23, could he have escaped kroxa, forcing the opponent to discard and then holding up red for bolt just in case? That way, every time he attacks, he’s draining his opponent of life and forcing the block from auriok on kroxa. Playing blood braid was risky, but it paid off since he hit exactly what he needed. Idk which was the right choice but I’m trying to pick up Jund and want to learn a little more about the decision making process :)

You know they are more than likely pitching yorion to kroxa there, so there is no real upside to playing kroxa. So the play with the most upside is sac the land if you draw the win great. If you don't draw the win, you can still trade with the ravine and rebuy it with wrenn.

    1:21:53 the problem with not rolling the dice and taking the draw was that you don't improve from that position. They are at a stage where they are starting to be able to resolve both a niv and a defensive spell so you only have one or two turns left. The assessment you are making is whether you have multiple turns or just one. I think both taking the draw and not taking the draw are reasonable. it's just how likely tou think you are to win the game if you give them an additional turn. i.e. are they more likely to draw things which solve thier immeinent death or are you more likely to draw things which kill them.
    I think with hind sight it makes sense to take the draw because a 15ish% chance of winning on the spot is better imo than the chance you had letting them untap after a niv turn.

You would force them to use the kaya's guile before activating your Raging Ravine. Then you can still swing in with the peatland. With this line you would take more resources out of their hand since likely they wouldn't be able to entwine guile so they would have to use trophy on your Ravine. Not absolutely sure it would have changed the outcome of the game, but the upside seems higher.

    In the Niv match my only thought (without knowledge of outcome) was "their deck probably out grinds yours so going for an aggressive play would be reasonable but I'm not a Jund player so you probably see something I don't". But to be fair a good majority of my losses come from greed.

    I think cracking the Peatland was the right play. You knew op had a kayas guile and redundant cards in hand, so playing kroxa as a 2 mana raven's crime doesn't make sense to me. It's didn't significantly impact the board or their hand and has more value in your hand than the yard because of the guile, and it seemed likely that they would cast guile the next turn.

  • @OnlyBadSalmon

    Regarding the play around cracking the nurturing peatland. I do like your play, you navigated the best line with the knowledge you had at hand. But knowing your opponents deck was going to start producing over the top plays on the very next turn I would have preferred you playing to your outs. You had 41 cards left in deck and 5 outs as you stated. Not great odds but the chance of you winning the game went so far down after that turn I would liked to have seen you go for it. Sucks knowing in hindsight it would have worked

    At the turn at 1:15, I think the play is to crack peatland, here's why:
    With 41 cards in deck and 5 ways to win, the chances of you winning instantly are 12,1%. With the information about opponents hand, letting them untap, your win % is (in my opinion) lower than that.

    1:22:00 I know as card gamers we're naturally inclined to superstition, but I always try my best to just not think of what the top of a deck "would have been". Because yes, the deck was physically shuffled beforehand, but for all practical mathematical purposes, it's poofing a random card that's in it (and wasn't scried to the bottom) into your hand at the moment you draw. That's why I always hate the postgame draw a card button on mtgo, it's just a "show me a random card in my deck" button that does nothing but frustrate.
    All that ranting done, I don't think I would have cracked the land there myself. But it may be the more likely win than hoping for the opponent to brick. It's a move that takes a lot of guts.

    I'm definitely not a pro by any means, but the game against 5C Niv-to-Light in the second game, you need to not play Kroxa. Honestly, drawing cards is the most powerful effect in Magic. It's why a lot of cards that allow draw are expensive or cost something, be it life, or otherwise. Drawing with Peatland costs 2 lands, but if you had drawn K Command, W6, or Brutality, the game would have been done, since you had enough lands to cast any of those. Hindsight, yes, you should have absolutely cracked, however, me knowing how I play Jund, at that exact juncture of the game, I had NOTHING going, and drawing was the best potential out we had.
    Edit: As another point to it also, you had another TWO draws at that point also, since you could have used W6 to return it and try again.

      It was a bit more than 5 hits actually as Reid could have hit Bloodbraid Elf into any of those 5 outs or a removal spell to win. He also had two cracks at drawing because he could rebuy the Nurturing Peatland with W6.

    1:14:00 I am incredibly surprised you didn't sacrifice your peatland over playing the titan. Titan is cool and all, but you knew he wasn't going to discard a land so he was a waste of 2 mana. You said you had 5 draws that outright won you the game out of 41, being roughly a 1/8 chance of winning on the spot, if not then there was not really any loss on your part. You either won there or Kaya's Guile pushed you back a few turns (best case scenario, even though it really didn't turn out that way). I'm just so surprised you decided to play the titan, even being a definitely dead card...

  • @WhereIsTheIntruder
    @WhereIsTheIntruder 3 года назад

    I think Bob is the place to be with Jund right now instead of W&6. It's markedly better against combo and Niv decks while also being only slightly worse, if not simply just as bad, against the aggro decks; at least it can block or eat a burn spell. It's worse in the mirror, but among the most popular decks that's really the only matchup where it's markedly worse.
    I also think Seasoned Pyromancer is not great right now. The format is too fast and demands the deck to be leaner, and with Kolaghan's Command being well positioned Spyro seems like the right cut.

    • @WhereIsTheIntruder
      @WhereIsTheIntruder 3 года назад

      @Oligoden if you are going to argue for a card, then argue. Don't just say "it's the reason the deck is good". It was better than Bob over a year ago when it came out, not in the current meta. W6 is a two mana planeswalker, true, but once you get past the aphorism of "two mana planeswalker good" what does it provide in the most important match ups currently? Bob digs for answers against combo, and against blitz, burn and shadow at least provides a blocker; in both match ups W6 is almost a mulligan or some indirect life gain at most, something Bob also represents as a blocker. And yes, everybody knows spyro provides good stats. Not as good as playing a fourth bob, third Kroxa or second terminate though

    • @WhereIsTheIntruder
      @WhereIsTheIntruder 3 года назад

      @Oligoden Wrenn almost always drawing burn spells is just flatly untrue, it's not uncommon to see opponents completely ignoring W6, because it functionaly does nothing in those match ups (it was even the case in this video); and even if it does, it's still a bad card against aggro, and both it and Bob should be sideboarded out. At least Bob puts some P/T on the battlefield though, and can block a Goblin Guide.
      And the point is that, being both so bad against shadow, burn and blitz, Bob is markedly better against combo and big mana, and even decks like Niv that try to go over the top. W6 does next to nothing in those match ups, which are very hard to Jund.
      And with regards to slower decks, Bob in very good too. As good as W6? No, but good enough so that W6 can't offset its bad performance against combo and ramp.
      I'm not just theorizing, btw. I've both played and seen in action multiple builds of Jund, and having 3 Kroxa as a way to shut down the door on games, and Bob as card advantage instead of W6, has been consistently better that Spyros and W6, and haven't felt more clunky than how Spyros generally feel.

    • @neilthomaswallin514
      @neilthomaswallin514 3 года назад +1

      I just wanted to first say I enjoyed the good points brought up from both sides. While I think Bob is better for an aggressive creature meta than W6 mainboard mostly based on the fact it can chump block while W6 can be ignored when played on turn two, I am not sure that's means bob is better than W6 for this list of cards. W6 greatly increases your chances to get to four lands on turn four (much better percentage than bob) which is vitally important for a deck whose most powerful spells that plays a significant role in pivoting from answering the opponents threats to forcing the opponent to answer threats (bloodbraid and escaped kroxa) in this iteration require four lands.
      IMO modern is a tempo first format where stumbling by any means including hitting your land drops often leads to losses as oppose to legacy where card advantage/selection is king and with the other formats there often is more breathing room for stumbles. The question should be asked if modern is in a meta where a player can take turn two "off" so to speak (play W6 which can be ignored for a few turns or play turn two kroxa from hand - a two mana opponent's choice discard on turn two on its own merit is a weak effect especially for modern) in order to setup for future turn success. Of course those cards don't have to be played on turn two but really that what this iteration is designed to do: turn one discard, turn two "setup," turn three answer, turn four start to pivot.

    • @WhereIsTheIntruder
      @WhereIsTheIntruder 3 года назад

      @@neilthomaswallin514 if you're afraid of not hitting land drops, then play 24 land. Bob should be more than enough to hit land drops up to turn 4 while also doing more than W6, and especially since the build I propose is leaner with only 6 or 7 3cmc spells (Lili plus KCommand and Pulse), W6 is not needed. If you don't like the third Kroxa, then cut it for a Terminate or Decay, but the deck has enough 2 and 1 cmc spells that Kroxa is rarely the only option on turn 2, while also being able to shut down the door on games against pretty much every match up: one of Jund's biggest issue for a while imo has been it's lack of a clock against some of the faster aggro and combo decks in the format, giving them too much time to draw the Bolts or Titans they need, and Kroxa (plus Bob, which can at least attack for two as opposed to W6) can finish a game fast, while also sizing up a lot of the time against Shadow and Scourge.
