With the help Israel and the Kurds.While America and China helped both sides with weapons ( Russia helped just Irak and was focused on Afganisthan). Near the end of the war America stopped the help of Irak and after the invesion of Kuwait they started a direct on it.
There's a white paper by the DOD from the early 2000s that documented war games between Iran and the US and we the US lost.
They used hundreds of boats and missiles to sink our aircraft carriers.

and there is no mutual defense treaty between China and Iran, nor, surprisingly, between China and Russia.
