  • We visit the D-Day Centre, Castleton, Portland in Dorset. A hands on museum where you can operate and hold the weapons, climb on board, try on uniforms and listen to the experiences of those who remember. Close to the slipway from where the troops embarked on D-Day. Thoroughly enjoyed, a truly great day out!

    Yes Bob and Jenny! This place is superb. We've been all over Normandy to almost every D-Day museum, and we where of the opinion that this is the very best one you can do, and its right here in the UK. The very fact you can clamber in and out of vehicles, play with guns, put on uniform, it's the most fun few hours. Highly recommended if anyone is down that way.

    Just come across this review of our D-Day Centre by chance. What a wonderful review, many thanks! The volunteer shown in the video is Joseph, his Great Uncle was an American in the 29th Inf Div who married a British woman prior to D-Day. He was killed on Omaha beach on D-Day and is buried in the US Cemetery in Normandy. My Grandad was also involved in D-Day with Bomber Command, RAF, bombing a gun battery at St Martin de Varreville on Utah Beach. I am so glad you enjoyed our museum. and that our passion to keep history alive and accessible is so well recognised by people like yourself. Thank you again for such a magnificent review.

    Rob Bell recently did a documentary on that area recently on tv channel Yesterday, it made me add that museum to my list of must visits. If you want some very very interesting museums you need to go over to France there loads of little WW2 museums in Normandy. They might only be a preserved bunker, or if you go up to Holland there’s the Overloon museum. Excellent museum, well worth a visit. Or in France theres the Pegasus bridge museum near Ouistreham, it’s got the landing points of the gliders in the field opposite marked by concrete memorials. It’s surprising just how close they landed to the bridge, no wonder they captured it. And the original bridge is preserved there complete with bullet marks. In Ouistreham itself is the Grand Bunker, it’s a massive bunker that was a firing control post, completely camouflaged and hidden in the town,, follow the signs to find it. Plus of course there’s Omaha beach museum, and the museum at Arromanches dedicated to the landings and Mulberry harbour. The guide there thanked our group for visiting and keeping the history alive.
    Just saying in case you’re over in France and need something to look at. Loads of WW1 and WW2 museums. Oh and if you’re ever in Belgium near Ypres, go to the Menin gate get there for 8 in the evening, the local fire brigade have sounded the last post every evening at 8 since 1929. It’s a really emotional experience. The Menin gate is the memorial to 54,896 men with no known grave.
    Sorry rambled a bit, but there loads of interesting stuff to see in Europe if you’re interested in WW1 or WW2 history.

      Thanks, we went to Normandy in 2016 (before we were recording on RUclips) and visited Ypres, in 2017 and 2018, in our Euro Tours videos. We really must get back there.

    Didn't know about this one. Will try to visit next time we're in Dorset, probably stop at Moreton. Wife works for the mod so we get concessions. Will email her your video link to remind us as we're doing a Bletchley park to Christchurch then Finnish at Moreton Dorset in a month's time. Though we do like to use the buses and trains if possible to visit the attractions. Especially now I've qualified for my very own bus pass. Hehe. Great vids.

    We enjoyed your video, a very interesting place, the burgers looked good too! Could I ask you to consider a couple of things please; we are new to Motorhomes and have bought a 6m van as we were concerned about parking it when we visit places and do not intend to tow a car. I realise you very often use your car but we would find it very useful indeed if you could comment about parking a motorhome in the areas and places you visit.it is something we always think about when we are going out in ours.If you don’t mind could you, at times, mention the effectiveness of your SATNAV in choosing your route and how good it is in not taking you down narrow or unsuitable roads. I would image it other inexperienced motorhome users may find this of value too. Many thanks Paul and Vicky…keep up the good work👏

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comments, I take your points, but you shouldn't have too much trouble parking a 6m motorhome. I do often mention if we would bring a motorhome and say if parking is available for motorhomes, but thanks for the reminder. Also I did a video a little while back about parking a motorhome. ruclips.net/video/sSFqZ2R7pgQ/видео.html
