Wyke Square enhanced 1994, Historic Dorset village

1970s-1990s photos by Stuart Morris, (Highways Agency Manager at the time of the Enhancement Scheme.) The little old village square at Wyke Regis, Dorset, had lost its character, and was subject to frequent rain flooding. Mayor Brenda Dench formally opens it. Sadly Brenda died just a few months later. First are images of the Square over the years. Compare its past appearance with the changes made by the 1994 scheme. Design and management by the then engineers of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council. The Borough Engineers Department has since been disbanded.

My grandparents, Bill and Molly Eva, lived in the end cottage next to the water trough from the early 80s through to 1997. So many fond memories! Bill is actually in the video twice between minutes 6 and 7. An amazing surprise, thank you so much for sharing.

@@StuartMorris7 we spent so much time down in Weymouth seeing them and other family and cousins, I'm always on the lookout for stuff on RUclips that brings back memories.

I owned the post office in the square and had the original Wyke Post office sign put up, lived there from 1981 to 1985, then moved into weymouth. We had many good nights out at the pub just off of the square and made some good friends. Lovely village.

You must have been the heart of the old village. Sad that the traditional shops etc haven't survived.

Overjoyed to see this, my nan was one of the ladies opening the square with the mayor, and my Dad is there with my Mum, can't thank you enough for posting this little gem, both my Nan and Dad sadly are no longer with us, but it was lovely to see them again.

Its great, whilst I didnt see myself I am pretty sure I was there as a teenager that day, I was living just up the road at Barrow Rise at the time

At 1:39 2015 that is exactly infront of my old home door was there in 2013 till 2016 and I moved to a different house in wyke now
