  • For a long time now, basic automation in Notion has meant using a third-party platform such as Zapier or Make to add stepped actions. Today Notion is launching Buttons, which add a new level of automation to the platform.

    It would be cool if we could eventually use the confirmation button to make advanced decision trees to guide us through different workflows.
    Something like “Good morning [user], here are your 3 most important task, where would you like to focus?” and just guides you through the daily planning process based on your own decisions.

(I use August Bradleys PPV system) There is just not enough well explained information on how to use these new features like buttons. You have done an amazing job at showing the true magic of what these can do. Thank you! I have become a follower!

    Amazing demo of the first internal automation tool.
    Thank you Ben.
    As there is no way to copy the Name of the Task while converting it to Project how about just maintaing one database with Sub Types of Tasks and Projects, so just converting "This Page" type to Projects will do the trick.

    • @benjaminborowski

      @@stitchynati Not yet, unfortunately. I have been adding a "Open Page" step at the end and applying the template there.

    • @stitchynati
      @stitchynati Год назад

      @@benjaminborowski That was my first thought too. I ended up making a makeshift button by creating a blank view of that database on my homepage (filtering out any progress and hiding all properties). Now creating a new entry brings up the updated default template that includes buttons for starting and finishing the task, as well as tracking progress in a linked database. I'm excited to see what else they add to this feature!

    I opened a ticket wtih Notion on this - but I noticed that if your database has a large number of properties, and you create a Button to add a page to a database, not all of the properties are listed nor can they be accessed via search when you click on the "Edit another property" drop down.

    13:09 What you really want to do in such a context is to convert the current Master task to a Project by MOVING it to the Project DB while adding that project to a related field in the sub-tasks.

    maybe you got an idea for something like tasks / weekly notes or journaling etc
    and if you click a button it will create a new week, clear all the information and put the last week in a archived folder

    • @benjaminborowski
      @benjaminborowski  10 месяцев назад

      A nice idea, but you cannot delete data with buttons, nor move pages. Status columns are the best way to archive data, using filters to hide them from views.

    Is there a way to make the changes you make to a template automatically update the instances of that template that already exist?

    • @benjaminborowski
      @benjaminborowski  7 месяцев назад

      Not without using the API, no. That would involve finding all the instances of the template and using the API to add new blocks to the page. The API is also limited in scope (can't create Linked Views or Link Previews, for example). So mostly: no.

  • @FazMoosaRMT

    Great explanation. Could we alter databases, such as add columns or or add tags to a database with a button? Or would allow us to push updates to already deployed templates without losing all the data.

    • @benjaminborowski
      @benjaminborowski  Год назад

      You will not be able to make any changes outside of your own workspace, no. You can add Tags to pages now, but not modify columns.

    • @benjaminborowski
      @benjaminborowski  Год назад +1

      You can configure properties to show in the Relation picker by clicking the "+" button and then clicking the "..." menu that appears in _that_ menu. It's one of the least intuitive interfaces in Notion, so it's understandable that you may have missed this.

    Is there a reason to use the old method of project/task vs the new subtask?

    • @benjaminborowski
      @benjaminborowski  Год назад

      Absolutely. Separate relationships give you more control over how you present information and if you have complex properties, it can be overwhelming to have tons of properties in the same database. If you have a very simple Project Task setup, sub-items can work just fine though.

  • @lucasabreu220
    @lucasabreu220 8 месяцев назад

    I tried using button to create a default task for a set of projects, but the tasks are created dependently, i.e., changing one affects all others. Is there a workaround for this ?
    I tried using Notion's tasks templates, but the behavior is the same

    • @benjaminborowski
      @benjaminborowski  8 месяцев назад

      That sounds very odd. I don't think you are creating new pages with buttons if they are linked in some one. Sorry I can't help because I don't really understand what you mean. If you follow this video's steps and the pages are linked, this would be a very bad bug and you should report it to Notion support.
