Thanks Mikey D, that was great!
I enjoy Nick and Lex's SD/Fagen reactions, and for me, Century's End is and overlooked classic. It's got it all:
      That rhythm
That syncopated, rising horn crescendo in the intro
Drug reference: "we tap to this line, dancing on a mirror"
And the good old wry observer "dumb love in the city at century's end"
It hits on all SD's classic strengths: composition, performance, production.
An everlasting delights. :) Thanks again.

I guess. But this particular solo sounds much more like Steve Wonder on harmonica. I play melodicas and have lots of different models. I have never been able to bend a note like that on melodica. But maybe he can. It’s hard to do without ruining the instrument. Maybe he has a custom made one.

" Shanghai Confidential " is quite possibly one of, if not the only, instrumental that I've heard Donald perform.

Found out recently brother-in-law sort of had lunch with Donald a few years ago. He went into restaurant/bar and had lunch at bar. There were two guys nearby, and they all got chatting about music stuff. After the two left, he asked bartender if he knew who they were. Bartender said one was someone who'd worked with The Band in the day. "The other is that Steely Dan guy." BIL is huge SD fan but hadn't recognized him. Said he was a really nice guy, no diva/grumpiness/etc.

The solo instrument you guys were referring to is a synthesizer keyboard. It is able to bend the pitch of a note by varying degrees with the use of a control, called a "pitch wheel," with your left hand. Don does play the small Hohner Melodica on stage sometimes. But it is not electronic and is breath powered, but is incapable of bending note pitch. If you've ever played one - you know.

Maybe. But this solo doesn’t sound like either a melodica or a synth. It sounds a lot like Stevie Wonder on harmonica. But maybe so. I agree that it’s not a melodica. That’s my favorite instrument to play and I have like 10 of them. And i don’t think there’s a way to bend notes like that on melodicas. Unless there’s some kind of custom instrument. But this doesn’t sound like a synth. I wouldn’t bet money on it, but I think it’s a harmonica

Highly underrated song. One of my favorites of his. Perfect for the movie “Bright lights, Bog City.”. The song only appears once in the closing credits. It would have been better included i. the club scenes. One issue is so many people get the lyrics wrong. For example, it’s “ scratch the cab , we can catch a local” but look at some lyrics searches! Does anyone have a live version? I’ve never heard it live and I’ve seen him in concert years ago. He never sang it.

Big Noise, New York was the B side for Trans Island Skyway. It was a demo for a Spike Lee movie that never made it to the film. Fagen wrote the music, while a gentleman who’s name I cannot remember, wrote the lyrics. It’s a gem. It came out first on a Jennifer Warren album that she covered beautifully. His version was released on some kind of Box set trilogy deal of his first three solo efforts. You can hear parts of the melody he used for the title track of Everything Must Go in this tune.
Interestingly, a recycled song of Steely Dan's was done by a beautiful female singer. Same melody, different lyrics of Third World Man. The title is, Were You Blind That Day.

There’s already been a suggestion for True Companion and I’ll second that as a great soundtrack cut to listen to. Just curious did I miss the last round of requests?
Has it already been opened and closed?
If so that is so depressing it is so hard to get a request in. Let me know and I guess I’ll try next month. Happy to hear stuff 😃 and sad 😞 I can’t get a request in. Please do Walter soon and do the first track off of 11 Tracks of Whack, or Bob is Not Your Uncle Anymore off of Circus Money. Walter on his recordings didn’t really want to sound like Steely Dan and wanted it to be more him especially since he would be singing. And he didn’t want to confuse it with the work that was still happening with steely Dan and him producing Fagan’s records.

Seems to me it would be really hard to appreciate the lyrics without having read the book or having seen the movie. So many subtle references.

#nicknlexrequest Hi guys. I don't know what the odds are that you'll react to this, but since I have nothing to lose 🙂'Rained Out' by X-Stream. I shared this with you a while back. This was my brothers band from the 80's. They didn't make it commercially, but locally they were quite popular, playing in Chicago at a place called The Space Place. They did manage to make a few recordings (unprofessionally) so, just for fun, he put them on RUclips. The band consists of my brother on bass, a drummer, a keyboard player and a female vocalist. No guitar. I'd love to see what you think of it, along with the other songs that he has on yt. Think of it this way, there won't be any copyright claims 😃

On last SD album, Walter sings on one song (can't recall title). You'll know it when you hit it. Walter was excellent at lyrics, guitar. His singing isn't my favorite.

THE INSTRUMENT IS CALLED A MELODICA.

It's a synthesizer. You cannot pitch-bend with a Hohner Melodica. (I play both.) They were talking about a Melodica but that is not what he used on the recording. Don uses one on stage but not on recordings from the day.
