I'd like to see if you can get one to run off Zippo Lighter Fluid
Thank you for this recommendation.
You look like ricegum
actually did this when I was in my teens. mowing lawn and ran out of gas no money to get more. found bottle of zippo lighter fluid and add it to the tank. had to run mower fully choked to keep it running and man the stink and lack of power. not a good idea
Karl Carpenter a diesel should
Karl Carpenter it will work but it’ll run hot. Zippo fuel and Coleman camp fuel are the same thing and you can definitely run an engine on camp fuel
How about a wood powered lawn mower, build a gassifier lawnmower sized and run the motor on the syngas.
Thank you for this recommendation.
Project Farm that would be a great one!!!!! I’ve seen it on a post apocalypse “reality show” I forget the name of it but they claimed to run a pickup off of that.
The ultimate would be if it could run on wet grass clippings, but it'd probably need to tow around a slow methane digester or something. Goats manage the trick so the energy equation must be positive.
wasn't it called The Colony or something? I remember it on Discovery channel
I've seen larger ones built on several channels but nothing lawnmower size that worked. I'd love to see this video if you can make it work in a reasonably copy-able way. I'd really like to build one but haven't found one within my fabrication skill set that's a size I have room to build.
I bet good money. U have been asked to support a brand .I commend u for keeping it straight and honest.

60% alcohol
30% nitro
10% castor oil
It was the alcohol that made it run very lean, needs ALOT more fuel than air vs a gas mix.
Adjust out the fuel mix jets and it will actually run great..
Thank you
plus nitro creates its own oxygen when burned
More specifically methanol and nitromethane. Methanol-air stoichiometric AFR is 6.4:1, so without the nitromethane you'll need a little more than twice the fuel mass flow rate than gasoline. Choking the air as you did will help, but as it's effectively running at part throttle, you'll lose a lot of potential power. Just drill the carb jet out... if it has one.
And I love how it burns, last PC motherboard that pissed me off for so many years and fully broke, my last revenge was RC fuel in it and burn, it looked like magic with a awesome kinda white cool flame, it burns quite a lot more than gasoline.
Now about the smell gasoline is much better, I love the smell of burnt gasoline specially on old cars, can't say anything about the taste proof of any thought :).

Hi, I'm a fan of your channel just for being "real" with your test and just using your everyday tools and machinery that most of us have. Thanks for keeping it real!
Thank you!
Possible to run some tests on quieting down a small engine? Like different muffler setups or home made mufflers?
Thank you for this recommendation.
Derek Straka yes please! I need one
Thats a pretty good idea!
I would like to see alternative muffler ideas tested as well
I’d love to see this. Mostly for generators, log splitters, pressure washers, etc... things that run, but don’t move much
so the reason you needed the choke is because the fuel was 70% alcohol. to run alcohol you need to jet up around 60% richer than gasoline. gasoline burns at around 134,000 BTU whereas alcohol is around 84,000 BTU. The nitro-methane doesn't come into play because your compression ratio is much too low to break it down into Nitrogen and Oxygen molecules which is where the power comes from. It provides it's own oxygen so stoichiometric ratio for Nitro is 1.7:1 , Methanol is 6.45:1, and gasoline is 14.7:1. that is pounds of air to pounds of fuel ratio. Since you didn't have enough heat or compression to break down the Nitro, it was just being pumped through as an unburnt liquid. (I think) Also, if by chance the alcohol had collected any water, that won't pass through a jet like a solvent will because of the surface tension water has.
LOL, check out my reply about 2 hours before you posted yours up. At least the two of us know what's doing on here!
Great point. Thanks for this post.
Thats funny, like 5 seconds after i posted it, I saw yours, and had I seen it first, I most likely would have commented on yours and not posted my own.
sidecarbod, did you post it under "TheVexCortex"? I couldn't find this name
I ran a weed eater on RC fuel ,, had to open the jet all the way out and yes it revved high. Lol
In go-kart racing with modified 4-cycle Briggs 5 hp engines running on 100% methanol we had to put larger jet(s) in the carburetors. We also had to advance the ignition timing using offset flywheel keys. This was to give the methanol more time to burn compared to gasoline. We also replaced the stock (black) carburetor diaphragms with the aftermarket (red) silicone rubber methanol-resistant diaphragms.
Thanks for sharing.
Just watched this old video. What progress you made expressing yourself in front of the camera ! Great job !
Thank you!
Try replacing the spark plug with a glow plug and and try and run it on diesel!
Thank you for this recommendation.
Not enough compression
so take out the gasket and replace it with a couple of layers of al foil. shave the head if needed.
Needs combustion chamber to be about 1/3 the size as original to start with.
Will an engine run on regular gas?
LOL! Not on this channel.
Lol
Doubt it
@@ProjectFarm I love your reply💜
That's not possible
I really love the see through engine tests you run. Always wanted to see inside a running engine. This isnt the first time ive seen it on YT, but you include that test a lot which is neat.
Thank you very much!
Although the nitro may help, the high octane doest work with the low compression motor, as I've said before you need a high-compression engine to test race fuels. Second you are changing the afr by cutting off air, resulting in less power. The correct way is to increase the jet size of the carburetor and keep all the air you can flowing through the engine.
Get a hold of some pure nitromethane.
Thank you for this recommendation!
will do nothing
it is a oxidzer without a fuel source it wont even ignite
robot797 You're thinking of nitrous oxide. Nitromethane is a different beast altogether.
nope i am thinking about the fluid not the gas
98% is about 98ish dollars a gallon
Try lamp oil in a 4 stroke

Can you see if you can run an engine off hydrogen generated from water?

that's disgusting.
These have to be my favorite of your videos. I've always wanted to put stupid stuff into engines just to see what would happen. you let me experience the thrill of ignoring manufacturer specifications without killing my own mower (or truck). Thanks a lot for that!
Thank you very much!
I have a Nitro RC Car and I was always wondering this! Thank you so much for making this video!
Thank you!
Very Nice !!!! , I also burned RC fuel in the upcoming episode, it was interesting.
Thank you!
Hey dude what are u doing here?
RC race fuel is Methanol, Nitromethane, and oil. In your case it was 30% Nitromethane, 9% oil (most likely synthetic, some brands use castor, or a blend), and the rest is Methanol. The reason you had to choke the engine so much is because the Nitromethane needs very little air in the fuel to air mix to burn, far less than gasoline or alcohol.
Great post. Thanks for commenting.
Also the fuel ratio for it should be 3x of a gas engine so that's why it needed so little air as the engine was fed with the same amount of gas but too much oxygen which forced you too choke it.
I bet with a 50cc moped engine running on nitro with the right tune & a heavy duty clutch you'd be able to tune 20 hp out of it.
This is 100% correct. Turbo and hot rod people using ethanol, blends and/or methanol injection or straight methanol know all about this. Methanol and Ethanol contain less energy than gasoline but they have a higher octane than gas and even higher effective octane due to their ability to cool the combustion process. This allows the use of higher compression ratio or more more turbo/supercharger boost pressure to be added. Much more than could be added than with gasoline. There is where the power comes from. But air/fuel ratio needs to be adjusted.
As an aside, another neat example of the cooling potential of alcohol fuels is that Top Fuel dragsters can run ungodly amounts of boost without an intercooler. You can look this up on other RUclips videos.
Don´t forget that methanol 61% more than the double content than the Nitromethane in the race fuel uses less than the half of air to burn than gasoline. It a 6:1 afr in comparison to 14.7 to 1 of gasoline.
I don’t even work with this type of stuff but here I am being entertained by these subjects. Meaning...u gave a awesome channel that’s is very informative and entertaining even to individuals that don’t particularly work on mechanical things like what your channel does. Anyways 👍🏻👍🏻✌🏻

When I was a wee youngster, my older brother flew
control line model airplanes (Cox PT-19 and others)
and had purchased a gallon of 30% racing fuel.
(Similar to what you tested.) One of my younger
(don't know which) brothers filled the lawnmower
up with it. I had to get it running. That lawnmower
had a mixture screw, and I basically did the same
thing you did. Richened up the mixture.
(I knew it would work, because I did it in the early
'70's.)
steve
Thanks for your feedback.
I just tried adding the Cox fuel to gasoline and it caused the idle to jump all over the place. Sometimes it would rev up suddenly.
This was a cool vid . It was a question that verried . Manny people told me that it would eat away at the carburator. I love how you are so honest at your work and I am glad that you want to be independant to stay true to the people . Good job great work and thank you for your true honesty brother🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you very much for the positive comment!
With rc racing fuel does contain alcohol.... It'll take awhile to eat the seals in the carb fuel lines etc. While the engines made today can burn almost any type of fuel, some caution should be taken when using any type of additives or fuel. These bids help
Switch 4 stroke oil with 2 stroke oil
Thank you for this recommendation.
It runs as if it were burning engine oil
John22724 already been done
Ben Turner you mean he has put 2 stroke oil in the crankcase of a 4 stroke engine?
Did you go to school for engineering or something like that? You have a very inquisitive nature and the unique way of finding answers
I did not. Thanks!
@Marc Owens I agree. It's Project Farms methods of testing which simulates real world use that he comes with that impress me. In my opinion things he thinks of could never be learned in school
So I found this channel and you do pretty cool engine experiments. I got a random idea the other day. Try running a engine where the exhaust is connected straight to the intake. No additional intake. I will probably run hot so a intercooler might not be a bad idea. Would love to see this experiment
Also , can you run an engine with gas in the oil tank ? I wonder if it will ignite or lubricate ?
Thank you for this recommendation!
I wouldn't think that it would light but if it did, then it would probally blow up the crankcase because of all the pressure. It would lubricate a little but but it wouldn't make much of a difference because it's not very vicious
Dylan Bryson I assume it would be similar to running a 2-stroke on pump gas without any added oil
Gasoline kills bearings. It'll seize eventually
Diesel fuel
0w-20 vs 20w-50?
Thank you for this recommendation.
OwO
0w-20 and 20w-50 are oil weights, I think you have them confused with gasoline
lawnmowers run on anything honestly. any decent oil will work
yeah and check the engines efficiency. like how long will the engine run with same amount of fuel just different weight oil in the crank

This might not be a very practical suggestion, but perhaps you could try running an engine on a trash bag of farts?
This could be a whole family project, and maybe you could get sponsored by Taco Bell.
Godfrey Poon fucking idiot
Great video, the 30% on the RC fuel would be nitromethane and the rest is methanol and castor oil generally. So it would be very interesting if you could get pure nitromethane and mix it with gasoline say in a 50:50 ratio and see what happens.
Thank you! Thank you for this recommendation.
If i recall, nitromethane does not mix with gasoline.
Yes, it is a polar liquid so you would be correct with them not mixing as gasoline is non-polar. However ethanol could be substituted as then it will mix, and that could be tested in the engines with varying ratios of nitromethane to ethanol.
Ethanol does not mix well with Nitro, that is Why Methanol is used as it is a stronger solvent.
a lot of those fuels are designed to run with glow plugs instead of spark plugs. Great video! i was wondering about this, and low and behold project farm already tested it 2 years ago. :)
RC fuel is just methanol, oil, and nitromethane.
Thank you!
Was about to say: they don't dare list "nitromethane" as an ingredient for fear of people making ANNM bombs with it. That unexplained "30%" on the label is the nitromethane content. As he notes, they make both stronger and weaker versions. Top Fuel for dragsters is usually 90% nitromethane, 10% methanol, and it's naaaaasty shit.
Well they are called Nitro cars and trucks 🤷♂️
@@ProjectFarm Also note that each nitromethane molecule contains 2 Oxygen atoms which significantly reduces the amount of atmospheric oxygen required for combustion. Might explain why the engine needed to be choked to get it running (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitromethane#As_an_engine_fuel ). Nitromethane has a lower specific energy than gasoline, but because it requires less oxygen, more can be used. The net effect is more power.

also run some engines with the crankcase filled with peanut oil or canola oil or vegetable oil or olive oil maybe all four to see what non motor oil will let it run the longest
Thank you for this recommendation.
When I worked at a tire shop, a lady called it to say she needed an oil change but the low oil pressure light had been flickering and she was afraid to drive the car to the shop. The service writer told her to put some oil in it and bring it in. Well, when she got to the shop, she said she put roughly 2.5 quarts of vegetable oil in the engine because that's all she could find. She lived about a half hour's drive from the shop. It didn't seem to harm the engine....for that short bit of time. I'm curious though as to what will happen in a stress test long term.
rc4life483 It seizes the engine after awhile. It works like motor oil but it doesn't last like motor oil does. but motor oil also has some added ingredients that helps it last a very long time. I saw it on another persons youtube.
It seizes the engine after awhile because when vegetable oil heats up to a really high temperature over time it leaves a very sticky residue which ruins the engine. Cook something in vegetable oil like french fries after you are done, touch the pan when it cools down and it will feel really sticky
Devil's Den Gaming but that's what happened when you feel inside a cold engines oil
Why don't you try running an rc car on moonshine, the Mythbusters did it with a real car
Thank you for this recommendation.
Project Farm you're welcome
sweet i hope we see this
If you put 1 part castor oil (from the drugstore) to 4 parts moonshine because an RC car has a two-stroke engine and a two-stroke must have oil in the fuel, it'll work. You'll have to adjust your carburetor, but it'll work. This is called "FAI fuel" - 0 percent nitro, 80 percent methanol and 20 percent castor oil.
I've ran RC cars in rubbing alcohol mixed with 2 stroke oil
You got like one of the greatest shows ever. Where else can you see results and test like this.

I see these are all old vids, but still entertaining. Educational too... Like I never would have guessed there were so many different things I could use as fuel in my lawnmower... Or oils if I can't find any... LOL

You could probably build a simple dyno rig with an A-frame, pulley/gear/chain drive system, a heavy weight (barrel or tote of water?) stopwatch and some math. It won't be terribly accurate and I'm you'll have to run a control run for every test because of weather changes. It would really cool to see real would differences in power output. It would make a nice addition to your other DIY/farm tests we all enjoy so much.
Thank you for this recommendation. I really want a dyno and hope to build one soon. Thanks again.
You could probably just set it up to run a pump and measure the time it takes to fill or empty a known quantity of water. Some math will tell you how much HP was made.
Of course there are limts to the max HP you can put on any given pump before cavitation begins to set in
Another option would be to hook it up to a generator and have it power a large heating element. Adusting the elements resistance and thus the current draw , for total watage, you would easily be able to calculate the HP
This could also be done with an induction motor but when used as a generator it is somewhat sensitive to the RPM you turn it at. You would likely need to pare it up with belts and pullies to set the right RPM. The same resistive element as mentioned above would be used and you would keep lowering the resistance until the motor dropped the RPM to below the operating range of the induction motor to operate as a generator
@@ProjectFarm I bet the local university's engineering department would help build a dyno... they love whacky fast turnaround projects
Your neighbours will love the smell, great video look forward to more :-)
Thank you!
I’ve replaced a ton of head gaskets in my day but I think project farm has me beat!
lol Thanks for watching!
I know this is really old, but I hope you learned something about nitromethane. The fuel you used had 30% nitro, 9% castor oil, the rest basically methanol, so considering meth. Stoich. Is 6.4:1, and nitro is 1.7:1, you really needed to drill out the main jet to get close to needed ratio. As I’m sure you know, choking the carb will make it run, but it won’t perform anywhere near its potential. One more note, nitro and gas don’t play well together, which is why they use methanol. Fun stuff though, and thanks for all the great vids. Your no bs straight to the point approach is greatly appreciated.
Find out if an engine will run on liquid propane
Thank you for this recommendation!
Project Farm no problem
I’d like to see what happens. I don’t think it will work though. Liquid propane is like -40F or something so I don’t think the engine will like that. Maybe just try propane gas??
They have mowers made to run on propane. You need some special lp setup tho
They make kits to modify a vehicle's motor to run on propane. It's simple.
Swap the oil for gearbox fluid, my mom did this by accident and did alotta damage.

I fly jets and Ive always wanted to know what a turbine can run on. A small RC turbine running on different things would be awesome!! Love your videos. Happy New Year
Great video idea! Than you
Really do have to applaud your attention to detail with the use of The MSDS and analyzing the materials you use. This particular experiment was one I was interested in myself being I’ve been in the R/C Nitro car racing hobby.
My assumptions were correct, the lubrication in the fuel is important because the small parts of an RC Engine at such high RPM 30,000RPM or more needs that high oil content to prevent failure. Usually R/C engines only last for 3 gallons of fuel before being worn out.
Great video and thanks for doing it!
Thanks for the feedback!

build a go cart or buy. and see if the fuels are strong enough to move human weight. and kinks in performance because it night still spark and hold power but once it has to move weight. would be look to see the results
You need very high revs to take advantage of nitro fuel. Higher than what an average small engine can achieve. Nitro brings its own oxygen into the cylinder, meaning it will operate with very little atmospheric air input. Nitro can actually run by itself. If tuned correctly, nitro doesn't need any air or oxygen to run.
A friend of mine used to "supercharge" these motors in high school auto class. Take the govenor off, hold the throttle open and hit it with compressed air and brake cleaner. Every time I see a B&S motor it always comes to mind.
Thanks for sharing.
Back when you used the vaporizor the first time...
I'd like to see smaller air bubbles to increase the air mixture and more vapor content. This vapor idea needs more refining.
I’m new to your videos and I am amazed. Do you teach classes or how can I learn everything you know???
Thank you very much!
Now that the you have tested a lower meth mix how about a higher one? or E85 to E100 fuel?
Jordan they'll run on e85 & up...just have to jet them really rich.
Well yea, but I mean without touching the jets and doing the same choke system he did. With a 30 mix it was almost choked out, I am not even sure it would run with using E85 and up fuel. The vapor experiment would also be cool to see for it.
Ah. Okay. I haven't done with RC fuel in forever. I been just messing with the electrics

Thank you for this recommendation!
Hughes Enterprises pretty sure a gas motor will run on diesel as long as the motor is already running & at operating temp.
ROTAXD,,,,Agree. Thing is though, gas has a much higher octane rating than diesel. Diesel fuel has a high cetane rating, meaning that it will light off at lower compression ration. Too much diesel added may give you pre-ignition and knocking.
Hopeso You're joking right? Diesel fuel is ignited in a diesel engine by compression ratio and diesels have much much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines.
Diesel is still a lot more prone to knocking than gasoline, thats how a diesel engine operates - by the sudden explosion of diesel as opposed to the smooth burn of gasoline. A big part of the reason a diesel can do that is they're all fuel injected - It won't pre-ignite and bend your conrods. Its entire possible for diesel to knock in a warmed up gasoline engine.
Thank you for all your hard work and commitment to your viewers. Have you tried water-injection like some WW2 fighter planes had?
Thanks for the video idea.
who originally came up with the see though engine? I gotta feeling it was PF and not warped perception.
Thank you. Warped Perception gets the credit! He's a friend of mine and is an amazing engineer too!
try to run the engine with 100% oxygen and racing fuel, maybe the engine will blow up :D
Thank you for this recommendation.
Please keep these awesome video's coming! Thanks
Thank you!
It’s a good thing your doing this because I wanted to know will this work on a 2-stroke engine specifically a 1985 CR500
Hey pf try the high performance non ethanol fuel that they sell in a can at Home Depot I’ve never tried it and it maybe interesting
Thank you for this recommendation.
It won't make that much of a difference. Most mixed fuel is 10% ethanol at its highest.
That fuel was released to alleviate issues with plastic carbeureter components degrading due to ethanol's hygroscopic qualities.
The engine might run a bit rich if it's designed to use ethanol blended fuel.
What about Acetylene. Do you think it will blow a hole in the piston?
Thank you for the video idea!
Your trying to get someone hurt here. It will run on it but it can also blow up. Like hydrogen ,if the mix is wrong, boom.
You just make my days man, thank you!
Thanks and you are welcome!
I automatically hit like on every projectfarm video I watch as soon as I load it.
Thanks for watching!
Oh my God I finally figured out why you don’t allow sponsors on this channel. That’s actually pretty smart I wouldn’t have thought of that but I have heard of that corrupting the reviewing videos
Thank you very much!
Oh my God I can’t believe you responded holy s***!!!!
Hey man I really love your content I hope we get to keep commenting I hope you see me on other videos in the comment section!
Lol could you give me a shout out just say the fan of the day or something that would mean a lot because that’s never happened and I want my name to be on a video you got 1.2 million subs I don’t know I’m just asking
Well, the ingredients don't seem typical of Glow Fuel. Shame.
