The fact the future head of the village wants the children to go be educated and take on better lives and jobs is very touching. To have love for his home and want to keep its culture alive while also wanting change for the better for those who seek it is very unique. I hope the kids do travel and spread aspects of their culture to other areas of the world

I'm from Nigeria, but I've never heard about this village Makoko. Big thanks to you and your crew for shooting this video and opening the eyes of the world to this wonderful community.
I have oh..I lived in Lagos and we had to go preach and share food there I was like 10yrs old..I felt so bad I didn't even know people can live like this
you can see the joy in the childrens eyes. they dont know hardship they only know they are alive and regardless of their circumstance they are happy. its so beautiful to see how they persevere. these people are all so strong!! and beautiful as well, their complexions are perfect and their eyes are so full of power like he said.
I Lived in Africa for my first 20 years now I live in a developed country and I came to realize despite the hardships there, Africa is rich of life, but here we are rich of money but poor of life, paying bills and working throughout our lives is all I think now, THOSE PEOPLE ARE STRONG AND HAPPY in some way despite everything
@Pesky Pickle you are so rigjt.I didn't have much when i wat young. but our family were very closed. I had a great childhood. now we all grown up. grandparents passed away. we all have bigger and gated apartments and cars we also have holiday home in other city . but our family are falling apart no more close. the truth is we were much happier when we didn't have much. material things can't bring your happiness. most importantly you can't take it with when you die.
Africans will never stop smiling and dancing even on the doomsday They make me realise materialistic things are not important to be happy Hope they all get the support they need Love & Namaskara from South India to all African brothers & ladies 🙏
All I can say is, I feel soo humbled. I am Nigerian and I know things could be better but it's the fact that 'suffering and smiling' has become the norm. Looking at the bright side of things, it shows how resilient we are as a people, we thrive in whatever situation we find ourselves in. But still, things can be a lot better. By the way...loved this episode!
This is one of the best food shows I’ve ever seen. Incorporating the socioeconomic considerations are important for our collective understanding that we are all in this together.
I have to admit, I watch Sonny's videos here and there. But this one really hit me with how lucky and how we take so many things in our life for granted.
Those guys would rather die, than be moved out of that paradise, you assume to be a slum...their happiness is not in the things you think will fulfil you...but in their humanity, community, socialization & inner peace. Anything that wants to disrupt this, will make them extremely sad...
@@efemzyekun900 please stop spreading lies. These people most definitely will be happier in better conditions, places where their children can get a good education and not struggle for their life. Yeah we may be happy but we are also very unhappy.

HOODOO DAUGHTER ... (SussexStan) Because of xenophobia. Ideally, Nigeria is richer than South Africa (the richest in the continent, with the richest Black men in the world), but the level of corruption is the reason people want to get away. It's disheartening having the richest and poorest people in Africa in the same nation.
Here is some facts for you and your nice words. They are not going to get any help from this. Their life isnt going to change unless they help themselves.

Actually not rare at all ...there are countless young ppl with beauty, smarts, talent, and passion doing the quite & thankless work of uplifting Nigeria ...if only the system would get out of their way :(
This is so sad and so true. the Government has made it hard for her and others like my cousin to make lots of head way. Especially macoco which should be protected, they want to turn that area to another money making zone of which none of us citizens see the cash flow.
And when he said " that's okay " my heart broke cause he is the father to them all their protector and a great man in this floating village. Education takes the kids and I pray once they are educated they find a better way for MaKoko to exist without the government riding their backs like they own everything.
I love this channel I watched it throughout my pregnancy and now my daughter is going on six months and watches it with me. I love being able to show her not only different foods, but cultures from around the world it’s like a little classroom of learning great job!
these are my favorite BEFRS episodes. the episodes that use food as a device to tell a larger narrative about unsung communities are just so special. thank you!
I can name one. You can watch Anthony bourdain. He even go deep inside America slump and talks about geopolitical there. I believe that's what inspired this show.
"Once the get education and they are educated none of them want to stay here. They'll want to get a better place to live than here." "And that's okay with you?" "Yes. That's Ok." My mans just wants the best for his people, so much respect for him.

My God the people there have the purest sound when they sing, it's like getting a first hand glimpse of the celebration songs of their ancestors for a moment. These people are worth helping specifically because they are so spiritually strong as a people and the community even though their own government has abandoned them

I have been in Lagos for 5 years. I cross that bridge at least twice every month. I see these houses on the water and think to myself, this is a part of Lagos I do not have any business with. The truth is, we are all connected and watching this has given me a better sense of the things we take for granted. I will pay a visit to this community on water, visit their homes, eat and drink with them as my brothers and sisters. Help us make Nigeria better.

God bless her. Innocence is a blessing. She doesn't know what Venice is. Her floating town seems to be more realistic, full of love, joy & church! I love seeing those kids smiling faces than the fancy cafes in Venice.
This floating village is GOLDEN. Beautiful culture and delicious seafoods. If the government cleaned up the environment, keep the beautiful community there and provide the children education, this floating village will become the BEST major tourist attraction for the country. Also this is the best foods show of all; the video speaks for itself. Thank you Sonny for showing us many hidden gems in the world.
No, do not make it a tourist destination. Once that happens local industry and culture leaves, and hoards of tourists occupy the place instead. Not trying to be politically correct, but that would ruin the town. Many places in NA and Europe can attest.
Maybe the people could be a little proactive & clean up their own mess instead of continuing to throw trash into the water and relying on the government to do everything for them & clean up after them. The whole world points their fingers at Western countries over pollution when it's really countries like this that are mainly responsible for the fact that our oceans are full of plastic.
Seeing Makoko like this for the first time thanks to you guys. Imagine dealing and living with people's trash everyday 😥. Taiwo is a true leader. He wants the best for his people even if that means they have to leave the community. God bless you and your team for this documentary. Greater heights in Jesus name Amen ♥️
Taiwo need to be guided and supported in right direction, then surely this young man will bring great change towards a better living for the entire community.
I got so emotional when the leader started speaking about the future of Makoko. God bless you man, god bless your community. I hope good things will come for Makoko
I am from Lagos!I lives at the neighbouring city to this makoko for 11 years.in my life, untill i left for italy 2016.i usually pass through this makoko with canoe to reach my house every day. It was very tough, but there's always smile😊 in our face. Because we never realise we are poor.
You are eating, helping each other, protecting each other, uplifting each other. You are not poor. Poor people have no resources and no love. This is simply a community that is not materialistic, which is GOOD! Once you are shown greed, materialism, selfishness, you realize the better life was this one....all that is needed is trash removal, little bit of hygiene upgrade. When i got my first house, i wondered why my mother's house never had the inch thick gray dust on the baseboards that mine did...it's cuz she scrubbed them every other week! I never saw that part. So the upkeep of surroundings is just a valuable as the procurement!!

I think our definition of success needs to be based on the good we have done to help our fellow man, and not hurt him. I try to always be nice to others, and smile, and say hi to others. I think the problem is that people in the world today see being nice as a vulnerability, or as trying to compensate for something, or as someone that can be pushed around or taken advantage of. i won't lie as a Nigerian this video has thrown more light to makoko than I have ever known in my whole 17 yrs of living in Lagos. I won't lie Makoko is also very beautiful and culturally blessed, it can actually look like a resort if the waters can be clean or make the houses more modern and it can actually be a tourist center cos u cant find this in anywhere else in Africa
The water is naturally brown so no luck there, the funding required to modernize all the houses is near impossible even for a fully developed nation muchless for a poor one, then clearing the pollution is doable but just isn't worth it when you can just clear up pollution inland where tourists already go

Kenya one of the beautiful places in the world which has the great potential but government are failed to convert those into opportunities. Yes my dear almighty knows everything just keep doing what you can for your people lots of love from other world 👏
The grass isn't always greener on the other side trust me
It's not good to blame everything to government. Government didn't tell them to live in water. It's totally their choice whether to live there or not. Instead people itself need to change from inside.
@@tensait1751 no it's part of their culture that the government wants to erase.
This show is powerfully more than about food, it's about the whole identity and personality of a people and place. I have never known about this place and now i'm so glad to learn about. The people's smile, their humble living, their skills, their food and music, they are inspiring.
Mark Youneva you can come to my village if you like it that much :)
Seriously how can someone hate this man, I came here to laugh and feel at peace but now I'm tearing up, this is beautiful
They seem happier than anyone I know. Looks like an amazing community.
You must know a lot of liberals lol
Laura semm..
I love you😘
All black people.were before ur ancestors, the caucausoid germs came in and oppressed blacks as a nation...
ALL THE SMOKE STFU let her comment in peace. The cycle will NEVER end if you constantly finding ways to bash and remind. We get it but that was unnecessary by far!
I things not happy due water floating
Thanks!
“The time the government really need us is time for election” this hits hard for every country
The government isn't supposed to take care of you and you can measure how corrupt a government is going to be by how much it says it will take care of you. The best government is the one that says 'you will never receive social aid and you will never be taxed for it either.'
Exactly, and they only want to give crumbs to keep you come back for more just so they can feel good.
@Mubarak Hassan No. It's not. The government is supposed to protect your liberties. AKA protect you from theft and violence. Beyond that the government is worse than useless. Politicians just offer money and services as an incentive for you to vote for them.

Thank you for this show. I am a single parent and my 12 year old son and I recently started watching your show. He and I thoroughly enjoy your first time tries of the most eclectic foods. We laugh with you and we also appreciate your respect towards other cultures. Thank you so much for your transparency and authenticity. I have much respect for your team. 🙏🏾
Will you Marry me 😌
This is actually great journalism wow I've never seen this before in my life very interesting very well done thank you
Watching your videos helps me visit the world, learn new culture and food. You do an amazing job.
Makoko deserves a whole space on every Tv screen. I can only say "WOW". Beautiful People
This made me happy and sad at the same time God bless those people
Literally 99% won’t see this but GOD blesssss you be safe during these times I’m struggling to hit 4k🤧
He will. Those are his people. His chosen seed line. Rev 2:9 and 3:9. This poverty won't be forever. Only in a world given to Satan. Not in a world where their messiah reigns.
God bless you too
@@JAN-pn8pd you too🥰
God bless🙏🏻
Taiwo will not deny growth for his people. That's the trait of a true leader.
Right! One can tell he just wants the best for his people. Born and raised in Nigeria and I had no idea how bad this community is. Smh
I must say- every video I watch on this channel transports me to the place that Sonny goes! I absolutely love the kindness and sincerity that he shows to the people, and his openness to culture and food. Have a great time and stay safe wherever you happen to go, thanks for sharing.
I appreciate this video! It’s not just another travel or food video but it highlights some real issues and brings up good topics of discussion 🙌💯
Exactly love. How would you help these people. What if we could make yt channel together to reach out to more.
This ia by far the best food review show ever. When he said, "The only time the government needs us is in time of election" I felt that. 😭
That is so true in Africa. Even now during the lockdown when so many people didn't get good and people are hungry, One minister said its not the duty of government to feed people.
Lol. If you are from India, and that too the north east, you would know that really well.
@John Adams northeast, south and east. Same story everywhere in India except in the cowbelt of the north.
Same here in the Ph

That village can easily become a tourist attraction vs. being considered an eye sore. Beautiful people.
Yeah, i think so too. It only needs to be clean to have cleaner water and also waste management is needed and boom..
The issue is that I’d hate to see it go the way of Hawaii, a vibrant and beautiful culture turned into a resort for those who can afford it. Money should flow into the community not replace it.
thats exactly what i thought too, eye sore? it looks beautiful to me minus the floating garbage that came from elsewhere. would be interesting to see what those people will make if they're given the materials, they look very resourceful, creative and hard working.
Well it sounds like that's what they want to make it,but without the people. Seems like they are doing everything to make it look bad,so they can have an excuse to tear it down and remove the people. Then they can bring in some rich bloke to buy it and make money off it.
Wow just yesterday I was introduced to this community but this video is amazing. Thank you for being immersed in their culture so we can see how they live. ❤️
I love this guy because he does not goes to big cities
He goes to places where the people r in need help
I respect him because he brings the beauty and culture of such places that people don't think about
It's like finding a diamond in the coal👍great job dude
You see how accepting Black people are, what if Black people went to Places like this surrounded by white folks it wouldn't be like this for us
This is one of the best videos from Sonny!!!! Deserves millions and millions of likes!
So true Nirja
True
Even through the struggle & poverty. You still see people smiling because Happiness is a choice.
such an amazing community full of joyous souls. i hope this video brings awareness and they get the support they need from the local government. this place is full and culture and shouldn’t be taken away from them
