Best tip ever from the guy who taught me to fly fish many years ago: When you are changing into or out of neoprene socks or waders with socks, take the floor mat out of your car, and stand on that. One errant step onto a small piece of gravel can puncture your neoprene. I have had my Simms waders for 15+ years, and the neoprene socks have never leaked.
Great tips as usual, and I loved the icicle shot! Only thing I'd add is don't wear underwear when wet wading I used to guide in Africa and even on the warmest days your pants dry quickly on the outside but your underwear stays wet all day, and can lead to really bad rash on your inner thighs.
"yes I did high hole them" great content .
They looked like they deserved it.
I smashed that like button as soon as he said it lol
Furreal
Funny az fck
When it's consistently over 70F in Colorado, it's wet wade time! BTW chesty's are overkill, all time, also.
Your channel is great man...so much better than Orvis or anybody who basically says "You take the length of the leader and the diameter of your dry fly and multiply it times the mass of the sun...these flies at our store for 700 dollars!" So thank you for that!
Really appreciate your videos as a beer drinkn stream fisherman thinkn about trying out flea flikn.
You should let us know next time you're in the Twin Cities. There's some great fishing right in the metro. Shoot, next episode, metro fishing or just fishing close to home/after work. Keep up the great work btw!
I invested in some excellent waders, but since Im here in texas half the time im just wearing shorts and chacos haha, great video
Ben I love how down to earth and relatable you are. Keep up the good work!
It's HOT! 92 degrees today in north west Montana. Wet wading, ice balls in the aqua.....Save the waders for the rain and snow! Huge!
On hot days in MN/WI, I go commando with just wading boots and shorts. I am only going thigh high and the cold water feels great.
hopefully that beer can didn't weight 200 bounds empty and ended up on the bank, see beer cans and so much more on banks of trout streams amazing how heavy things get after their empty yet so very light full
Shorts and light wading boots from academy (the more expensive of the two about $50 buy them on sale). Free balling is the way to go due to rash possibilities. Lots of tick spray unless your going thru bramble brush pants become a necessity.
Breunigs Lager from Rice Lake, Wisconsin was my very first beer (age 12) followed up that same day with an ice cold Pabst after an afternoon of loading hay bales.
You seriously make me laugh my ass off man!! Lol. Good stuff!
Good video as always. I wet wade whenever possible, use chacos for my footwear and it’s always worked well for me.
Never understood the practice of many fly fishers to wear chest waders hiked all the way up in the middle of summer...especially when wading in western waters often takes place in depths well below the chest...like knee deep or thigh deep at most. I bought a pair of patagucci waist high waders for cold water and since then, my chest waders have stayed in the bag year round.
Gonna need to get one of those wet wading hats....
Oh hell yes, Able Brewing. Cool to see someone repping Minnesota beer. Awesome video!
I don't believe that Pabst is a Minnesota Beer. The original Pabst brewing company was located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Maybe, because G Hielman (sp?) purchased Pabst, then, I suppose that the beer is now a Minnesota Beer. Too bad for Pabst.
@@jal7306 I'm talking about his shirt, friend!
Oops! My bad. I wasn't paying attention as I should've to the shirt. I stand corrected. Well, back to wading.
Great content. Thanks for the tips. I wear a pair of tight-fitting bike tights under a pair of shorts. Keeps your legs warm(er) and you don’t get cut up on the brush. And with neoprene socks you have to up-size your boots.
I only clicked because you looked so good in the thumbnail 😂
You had me at PBR!!! MY MAN!!!
3 yrs later watching this video, 🤘🏼 thank you
What kind of neoprene socks are those?! Everything I've tried on is too short on my legs and something that goes higher up would be awesome!
P.S. the link on your gear list doesn't work!
Legit barked a laugh at 1:30. I agree.
Nice! Funny and good info.
loved the quick edits!
Thumbs up the minute I saw the Pabst. Made Milwaukee famous!
I use my neoprene socks as huge beer cuzzi, cuz I like wet feet and cold beer!
This is not a bad idea.
They sell speedos for about $8 apiece. You can even get them in camo these days Cheapest waders you'll ever own. Biggest advantage is that all the other fishermen will keep their distance from you. Downside is the insects will not, but that's what bug spray is for, am I right?
I just use running sneakers and use micro spikes so I don’t fall on my ass. And when the water is ice cold and I use waders I still use my running sneakers.
I bought some neoprene chest-high wading pants/boots because the were on sale. I'm in Reno, it's been 100F-ish. I am awesome. No, I'm a moron. Or maybe I'm a genius in January. Who knows. I think the point is, clothing is a tool when fly fishing, not a fashion statement. I did buy an obnoxious vest though. Halloween costume.
So Crocs in 4wd and cargo shorts don't count?
“Pasty white chicken legs” Haha!
We had a rule when SCUBA diving to never pee in your buddies wetsuit. You need your buddy to sacrifice iif sharks come by. Does the same rule apply to your fishing buddy socks or is that cool to do?
You don’t need all that. I got some zip off light pants, I wear those, some Nike tall socks and some ankle high hiking shoes (make sure they aren’t water proof so the water doesn’t get trapped in
Was Hank Patterson lampooning you?
ahhhh yeah! PBR! What type of neoprene socks do you recommend? Specifics please and thank you :)
I like tall ones. I’ve been using Simms guard socks for a while.
Q : How long did it take to find icicle balls? A : First time trip in March with a hole in waders. I also love wearing my Teva sandals all summer long.
Sandals? I’d lose a toenail within 5 minutes.
I prefer wet wading, but that doesn't quite work in the middle of winter. This video popped up when I was watching reviews for Astral Loyak water shoes, which seem excellent for wet wading, even though they are made for kayaking and other water sports. All the major fishing companies make water shoes, but they all have very bad reviews. It looks like Astral may fill the void left by Orvis, Simms, etc.
Love the content... cracks me up. When we gonna see you actually fish?
Guides don't fish, they just watch their clients fish
Huge Fly Fisherman swag... where do I get some?! Love the videos, keep it up man!
Stickers are $3, coozies are $6. Venmo @hugeflyfisherman. Include your address. Hats and shirts soon.
I like to snip or melt a hole in the toe and the arch of every brand new pair of wet wading socks so that they drain water. If you don't they fill with water and make your feet unnecessarily heavy. I don't wear regular socks with them either.
Cant wet wade here in MN in the summer. Too many ticks and tall vegetation on the sides of the river.
Uhhhh……pants?
I wear boots and double Sox and if water gets in the boots I have double Sox to keep my feet warmer
Thank you.
any recommendations for the neoprene socks?
I just grab a pair of El Cheapo rubber boots that go up close to your knee. Easier, cheaper, waterproof, and gets me to 90% of the places I want to go. You don't have to source neoprene socks, or deal with wet boots since the rubber just dries/can be wiped dry.
Any advantage to using this setup as opposed to just some sandals like Chacos? Those are my summer go-to for wading
Yes. With boots you get to keep your toenails.
This is the only way to go.
Can you wet wade in tennis shoes, running shoes? Do you have to have wading boots?
You can use anything, but wading boots are better.
You mean to tell me they make shoes and socks to wade in?
Awesome !
Dude, I don't even fish, and I'm watching all your videos
PABST !! LOVE IT !!
Well what do you know, I've been "wet wading" for years and I thought it was just because I was too broke (or cheap) to buy waders!
More Twin Cities craft beer wear!
I want some of that Animales BBQ.
Huge Fly Fisherman I live 2 blocks from Able and can confirm that the Meat Tornado is delicious
Nice vid!
I think it is hilarious that so many guys use waders when the temperature is in the 80's and the water is warm.
I go sockless with the old Chuck Taylors ....
I just rock crocs in the summer
Wait...I think i found legs whiter than mine...No I didn't, but maybe cuz that's in summer
If you pee inside your socks it will keep your feet warm. Ahahaha
Make a wet wading necklace PFD!
Well...I wasn't aware that you're supposed to wear normal socks under the neoprene.
Cuts down on the stink factor hugely
Im in love with this man. No homo. But damn... What a specimen of a man... Lol on the real tho.... Learned alot of stuffs from watching these vids. Little stuffs they dont teach...aka part common sense which i admit, i may be a little light on. I blame weed, really im just dumb. So, i just bought some waist highs, or "guide waders" for when im fishing these rivers that are knee high or juat above... But not high enough for the chest highs. I almost passed out gettin my fat ass geared up... So went home and ordered the leg waders. I need some rubber sole wading boots, my simms are felt. Next purchase is gonna def be some freeFly apparel pants, (all their shits cool) and some nice rubber wading boots with these socks and leg waders. I may cancel now and do this. Its hot. Waters cold... NO more chest waders til october
Don't wear nothin wet wading but damn does it get scary when a snake follows your fly in
About time
5am mtn time. Put it on your calendar.
water shoes,so much easier for wet wading
Some days I wonder wth people are thinking. Why would you don the equivalent of a suit of Armor in 95 degree weather...on your day off. I look the same as I did when I was 14...ok maybe, rounder, balder...but dressed where I could go from the stream to a pickup hoops game...still a big fly fisherman..
Lol.
Hell I just put some old shoes on and start fishing.
Who would have thought, you actually learned me sumthin, thx
Pro Tip No.1 - Don’t wade deep with your wallet in your pants pocket. . . because it can float out of your pocket while wading..
Pro Tip No. 2 - Don’t carry your phone in pocket while wet wading . . . For obvious reasons.
crocs
You need a beer Sponsor
And Love the channel
now iam more confused....
Finally, common sense where it isn't common
My orvis socks were never waterproof
Starts at 2min
Must have wet wading hat.
pack it in pack it out- make sure that beer can returns to the back pack not into nature. See to much shit thrown into nature.
It's ethical to drink to drink and fish
I just use old tennis shoes with no socks.
There are things called
crocs too
Never wear cotton underwear for wet wading (unless you like chaffing on your cheeks)
Ben, just say it. We all know you're talking about the junk. Nobody who watches your videos is gonna get offended by that
Looks like north fork of the @&$@&
Gingers need to wear pants !!! Lol
If your not willing to get your nads wet - then you don't deserve to catch anything.
Disagree.
Tell a new englander going winter nymphing waders aren't necessary
