In order to have the same voltage rating as the 25000uF cap, you’d need to place 8 of the super caps in series. This would divide the capacitance down to 125000uF, which is still an extremely good energy density. However, you’d also need to consider ESR and ripple current ratings etc. It’s a game of tradeoffs, but supercaps are a phenomenal product. Regular bulky electrolytics still have their place though.
The smaller one is an electric double layer capacitor(EDLC). It has a larger capacity than an aluminum electrolytic capacitor. The disadvantage is that it has a large internal resistance among capacitors. It is used like a battery.
Well if you had capacitors of equivalent capacity they'd be the same run time on a fixed load, more impressively is the size difference of a super capacitor vs a regular capacitor
I design electonic circuits and rarely do I find super capacitors useful. Simply because of their very low max voltage. Chaining them in series will increase the max voltage but drastically reduces the value.
25,000 cap must be of much higher voltage, given its size, i expect it to be arleast 200v , in comparison super cap will indeed be 1 farad but at much lower volage of around 3 or 5 volt, so you got output only what you charged it for.
Yes. We don't really need batteries. We just need super capacitors that last a few days. Solar replenishes them. For weeks with zero sun, use alternatives. This probably can already be done, but power companies need to monetize your ass.
Makes one wonder is super capacitors will eventually replace batteries in vehicles. Perhaps the battery will remain the best but super capacitors may, one day, be "good enough".
A 1000mF 40v super capacitor should be 8 times larger than the 1000mF 5v super capacitor and could be smaller or the same size as the common 25mF 40v capacitor shown. Many people say in the comments that size doesn't matter... But it does matter if you have to respect the voltage needs of the circuit and still evaluate the possibility of spikes considering 100% of the safety factor. Standard caps don't discharge current, they're only for voltage smoothing.
