I had been in a reading group for this, but dropped out and DNF’d about 200pp in. At one point I made the comment, that for the first time I understood the lure of abridgments, and suggested I would prefer one for _Les Mis._ Somebody didn’t like that. Thank you for reading this so I don’t have to.
I have had a copy of Les Miserables on my shelves for more than 20 years. Finally, I've decided it's time to read it and I'll try it during August and September. I hope I'll enjoy it 😬
I couldn’t get through it on my first try (but still hope to eventually pick it up again) because of a lot of the things you mention. It felt very didactic, which I don’t like in literature. I love your videos!
I love Les Miserables, both the book and the musical. The book is split into 5 volumes and I read each volume like a separate book, taking a break at the end of each. I skim over most of the digressions which makes each volume go by much faster. Jean Valjean is one of the greatest characters in literature, in my opinion.
I loved the musical as a kid and tried reading Les Miserables once and hated it so much I have never gone back. I think it pretty much solidified for me how much I just really dislike a long tangent, especially if it doesn't feel useful or relevant in the moment.
I loved this book, but I can certainly acknowledge it's flaws. The strong parts made up for a lot, for me anyway. I agree 100% with what you said about Cosette. She was insufferable at the end.

Oh the sacrifices I make!

Thank you!
I was planning on tackling Les Miserables this summer but now I’m wondering if I should go for the abridged version.
An abridgement would be the editing that this book never had.
i had 0 intention to ever read this book but i'm actually intrigued by the challenge of it now - bring on Waterloo? =P
@@apocalypsereading7117 nooooo love yourself more!
This is one of my favorite books of all time. However, I will read the abridged version next time.
I have missed you!

For all my misgivings, I do love Jean Valjean as a character. His struggles with his own morality makes him so human.
