We need to find out the age-old question, is this Smith & Wesson M&P tactical knife worth your hard-earned money? To find out if it's worth it, we need to know three things. How good is the build construction? Is it sharp? Will it survive the dishwasher?
You can check out the knife on Amazon if you’d like: amzn.to/3FLyLEN
At the time of recording, this knife cost $19.10, I noticed that the price has been going all over the place, at the time of posting this video the price is now $33.11.

Thank u
NOOOOO YOU CANT SPOIL THE VIDEO THATS ILLEGAL
You should keep doing this as a mini series. I quite enjoy it.
Agree, more of this please. :)
For sure! My brother Kyle and I had a lot of fun making this! More coming soon! -Josh
@@KyleRoyerKnives if you could do this it'd be awesome? If there's a person who I'd trust their opinion it'd be kyle.
@@KyleRoyerKnives I wonder how far up the price range/popular list on Amazon you have to go to get a decent knife
Hmmm, now I need to see how I incoporate a dedicated tomatoe drop test area into my shop.
Nice test, I think the test result was to be expected from the getgo.
Maybe you should start selling Kyle Royer approved rocks through Amazon.
amazing. should do this as a series. i would watch them all. amazing editing as well. awesome shots.
Loved this, please keep it a series.
Also it be nice to see a "how it should have been made" split off series where you recreate the blade but as it should have been made
Right, now go make something you’d be okay with selling for $20 and come back and show us how you made it
Anyone can say how they think something should have been made, but they would never sell something they put that level of effort into for $20
That's why I started making knives . Store bought knifes suck. Keep up the great work . Love your videos
I'm starting to understand thats why people pick their life careers and get into creating something that's mostly missing in today's every day life
You see a product that can better meet demand or even create demand, and you kind of fell like you NEED to.
That guard pin though... Still shocked! It'd be great to one day see you make a rugged survival knife and then absolutely brutalise it to show how much torture it can endure!
Just watch the Victorinox chefs knife video he does - its 100 X better than this knife
I have this knife to, I have several (4), that pin in the hole that holds the guard does not exist an my knifes at all, the guard is spot welded to the knife and feels very strong built, I bougth them 2years ago , I am from sweden :)
Great video very informative and thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the Video!
I didn't find any similar video on your channel testing a Mora. It would be very interesting.
Love the production quality. You look so happy!
Nice review bro 👍 thank you.enjoyed it.
"You almost killed me!" That was hilarious. :)
Thank you for another great video.
Hi it would be great to see you make a tactical survival knife 🗡️ I bet it would look amazing and be a 10/10 tool 👍👍
I have my OKC3S bayonet. A prototype of it was able to pierce a punching bag with aircraft aluminum and a kevlar ballistic vest around it.
Hi Kyle, what knife sharpener is that? I use stones now but have been hunting for a belt sander with a platen like that. Thanks much.
Has he ever said ''may the forge be with you'' before. Thats an awesome quote.
Great job! I watch way too many knife reviews and your content was fun and refreshing,as well as oddly different ( loved the chicken and troll hair test) you definitely have a new subsriber. Thanks!
I bought this knife and i like it. I collect kabar, cold steel etc. I can put a pipe and break those too if i want. My S&W survival knife came out of package very sharp! Same sharpness as on my kabars and cold steel. Bought mine at Cabelas
Subscribed! Bought that "car knife" too! I'll just continue to keep my SRK & Leatherneck in my backpack rotation though... GREAT VIDEO btw!!!
I believe Amazon may still have some carbon steel SCHF9 knives left. If not, they should have the stainless version called the "Reckon". You'll get 10 times the knife for 2 and 1/2 times the price. Buy once, cry once. Mine has batoned many small logs of Live Oak and Mesquite. Worth a look.
This was a very very informative video that I have absolutely no idea why it popped up on my feed
I would suggest looking at some of the "box" subscription services tailored towards men, they offer a WIDE array of these "questionable" knives. Mostly in damascus or faux damascus (i never tested). But could give a good mix of options! Great series, love watching!
I wish you compare one of your own handmade knives in a test against a popular factory produced knives.
Coming up in future days!
@@KyleRoyerKnives can't wait..!!!!
The tag line for this knife should be, "Its the most dangerous knife on Amazon, but not for the reasons you think!" good stuff Royers.
you should make your own version of the ka bar knife that will be awesome
Part of the problem with mass-produced knives is in the mass production techniques. In the very best cases, they might get individually heat-treated in a machine cycle of some kind, but most of the time they're cycled on racks, which means that each individual unit isn't getting the attention it really needs to have a reliable temper--and that's just one problem among many.
Thank you for entertaining us with this piece of substandard tool
LOVE this little series! More please!
I just purchased this knife, and I actually really like the quality it arrived in, but I will note that it’s a self defense knife, it comes from the military and police line so it’s made for civilian carry, so I don’t believe that it was designed to go through so much torture. Although I would love if you could review some ottoza fixed blades
The blade shape is 100% made to be a stab n slash combat knife. Same style point as the M9 bayonet which makes it ideal for stabbing.
Best said i bought one today costed 70 us dollarsbut i bought it for self defence witch i think it is best for
I have this knife, I have several (4), that pin in the hole that holds the guard does not exist an my knifes at all, the guard is spot welded to the knife and feels very strong built, My knifes was razor sharp from factory, the sawtooths an the back of the knifes, you can accually saw better then you think with them, yes they are not the best ofcourse, but wood resonable size can be sawd with it. I hit the knife by mistake really hard an a metall fence bar once, it did shop a little of the edge off but it was simple to fix with my grunder (tormek T-8) I would say it's a really good knife for the price id you respect the knife for what it is :) however my version are not the same one you have since the way the guard is fixed is diffrent, I wonder if you have an older version or a new version of the knife, and if I have a older version or new version of the knife😁😁 I bougth the knifes 2 years ago. I an from Sweden 😊😊 good video you did
The only $20 survival knife I trust is a Mora. You can also find a Glock knife for not much more money, but they’re only hardened to 55 HRC and don’t sharpen up very well. A Mora will get scary sharp without a lot of work on a stone or a strop loaded with compound
Marttiini Condor Timberjack
Please, say what type of steel the knives you test are made of.
It definitely looks like false advertising and a huge waste of money in a time when we are going through a recession in this country . What a rip out . Thank you for sharing this amazing and informative video .
It's a $20 knife. I'd say it's a great value for $20. You really can't expect much for $20 these days. I mean obviously it's not a Ka-Bar, or Cold Steel, or a Schrade or something even higher end but you're going to pay damn good money for those. I don't think we could really expect it this to perform like $100 knife for $20. But as a general utility knife for camping or something, if someone knows how to touch up the edge occasionally, this knife would last for decades if it wasn't abused.
I really like this keep doing it you're on to something.
I expected a lot of those results. Now let's see how a $35 Glock knife does. I've heard from several real Special Forces people that they are great for the money.
Ain't they 1075 steel also? Not bad for the price
@@lonetrader1 Glock officially lists it as "Spring Steel" which could be several different types. Most cited on forums is 1095 which can easily meet their posted HRC of 55.
I have one. The ones without the saw back specifically. Not sure why they don't make that one anymore. It was my first real knife. The only bad thing, and this might have changed, is that the edge is pretty bad. A small price to pay fir a rock solid knife. Just put a better edge on it and you're good. It's got a fairly beefy edge geometry, but if you want a knife that takes a beating that's not a bad thing.
Cold Steel SRK can be picked up for around that price sometimes too.
I own a glock FM 78, but I've never been so rough on it. However, the interwebs have abused them and they seem to live up to the hype.
I'm not doing that to mine 😂
Bless your heart!
Thanks man
More of this plz.
3:46 - Well, there goes my lunch! Thanks a lot! I brought that for me to eat, not for you to test knife sharpness!
Would you be willing to review CFK knives? They sell them on eBay and I’ve bought a few of them. Been happy so far with them but would be interested in seeing your review of them.
Wait so if you dont recommend this as the price stands what would be your best rated knife at that price.
Wouldn't this be get what you pay for so if so what can be the best at that price point ? ?
Nice channel ideea, Kyle!😎
Please review Oerla Knives, like the Oerla TAC DE-0014 and Oerla TAC TF-0017.
I personally love Smith and Wesson Knife cuz don‘t are low price and look cool. However, they are bad quaility and bad material, but you pay what you get as budget knife. Still good for the price point
This was satisfying, keep em coming Kyle. I won't buy this knife, can't afford a Royer knife, so I'm in the backyard looking for a rock right now .
Nice. Get a big one
Cheers my friend
Dad
So... I like the video concept. I agree with conclusion the knife is cheaply made and constructed. A few things to consider...
I liked all the initial cut tests except for the fruit ninja stuff. Fruit, veggies, and plastic bottles only showed how skilled you are at sharpening. A few of those you can pretty much do with a butter knife. Instead consider getting a edge testing device. Maybe test how sharp it starts vs. how sharp an edge it can take. Different steels have different strengths and weaknesses. Maybe test how long the edge lasts. Cutting sisal rope is great for that if not exactly as flashy or fun.
The bend test is absolutely a thing (though more for swords if I recall correctly) ... but perhaps preface it with some info on how far a knife of that style should bend and still return to true. Check some of Cold Steels old RUclips proof videos to see that test done properly (if over dramatically)
Absolutely loved the dishwasher test. The combination of heat and moisture is a great benchmark to test corrosion resistance. Especially the heat dry afterwards. It would be incredibly rough on any wooden handled high carbon knife though. (Definitely hand wash those. Lol)
Maybe vary the testing for knives based on the style of knife it actually is before abuse/destruction testing. A fighting knife isn't a bushcraft knife. Both have very different construction, edge geometry, etc, etc... A fighting or hunting knife are more designed to cut types of meat... a bushcraft knife is meant to cut wood.
I also liked the deconstruction of the knife. Perhaps consider doing that while it is still in one piece and make predictions on how the knife will hold up before testing.
In conclusion: The video was entertaining if not exactly scientific. The fruit and water bottles needs a before and after sharpening to show the difference cleaness of the cuts to habe a point other than just entertainment value. Using what was specifically a fighting knife for cutting wood... seemed suboptimal... maybe cut up a roast for dinner instead?
looks like you have the greatest job on the planet, the fun you have doing this is fun to watch...😄
Now for a comparison with one of your knives!
Could you try this with a mora basic in stainless?
I guess that, for $19, you're not going to get a Randall. This thing is meant for a hobby oriented guy. I enjoyed this video, thanks!
Mr. Royer,
.
A craftsman of your legendary skill cannot review such an implement. It's not a knife, it's not a tumor, its merely knife shaped. It's 19 bucks, it dices, it slices, it looks scary. Just think if your Halloween costume had 5 of them mounted to each side. You can't even get a burger and fries for 19 bucks, I mean you can, but the fries are cold, the coke is watered down and flat, and the burger didn't have the cheese you ordered.
.
Your Friend
Mr. Smith
I have a theory about the pin in the tang. I suspect those knife blanks may have been misdrilled and sold as cheap defects or intended for a different handle and the pin was inserted as a cheapo filler to save the otherwise defective/useless knife blanks. Im sure they are mass produced and if someone ran a few cases through the drill press in the wrong fixture this would be a likely result.
I have 4 of this knife , non of them has the hole with the pin in the tang , the guard an my knifes are spot welded to the tang rock solid, I bougth them 2years ago
Do more of this Series 😅
Somewhere in China, a knife manufacturer is cursing your name. Loved the video!
Definitely subbed to your channel after the victorinox review, watching this one was an eye opener though, I'm a retired veteran and would have been gutted if I had bought this knife.
Could you review the German KM2000?
There's plenty of test videos out there, but they're mostly in German or broken English.
You have to make a tactical survival knife!!!
How much is one of u'r knifes .
Where is the link?
I have this same knife. I bought it at Bass Pro Shop for $54.99 CAD. (Definitely overpaid for it)
I have never used it and I never will because after seeing this, I don't plan on keeping it.
My friend will be getting a new knife tomorrow, but I'll be sure to warn him that it's junk.
This was great. You taught me a lot can be hidden under that handle.
For anyone still following these comments looking for a very good knife at a great price, check out Varusteleka out of Finland. I own 3 of them and for what you get, I don't think they can be beat at the price point they are at. Terava Jaakaripuuko 110, and 140. Check them out. Excellent customer service and they don't try to gouge you on shipping either. I'm also a big fan of BPS Knives out of Ukraine. I have about six or seven of them and they are a little cheaper than Varusteleka's offerings in general and and are excellent working man's knives in my opinion. I would love to see Kyle thest either of those two companies offerings.
I am in no way affiliated with either of those companies, just a guy living off grid in Alaska who loves knives, and uses them daily.
How many inch is this knife
Can you review the kukuri House power hammer bowie please
OR.... The Ka-Bar Becker BK-2. I would love to see that crow bar tested. One of my all-time favorite fixed blades.
Better yet is it worth to buy cheap Japanese knives from Etsy and or eBay?
The grip should be made of an injection molded glass reinforced nylon. If that would have been the case, the knife would have been a lot better because then it would not have needed that odd piece of steel behind the handguard.
Greetings,
Jeff
Yes, a harder material for the grip and then two bolts to hold the hammer like pommel in. The hard part is keeping everything tight thru production and assembly.
I buy cheap knives all the time just for fun when I’m wanting something new but not wanting to spend to much and I just bought this knife like 2 months ago ago and stuck it in my four wheeler glove box and used it to skin a couple squirrels and a coyote and did alright for stuff like that
I don't see anything wrong with a thick edge, personally. The RAT-7 has a pretty beefy edge, and that thing has skinned for me, but it's also batoned through nails
I got the glock tactical from them and I haven’t had any issues with it
I mean it is just a 20$ knife. You would be quite silly to have any level of expectations of it. But great series please continue you these type videos.
Morakniv wants you to buy one of their knives for $20, then stfu as it blows your mind.
Not worth it, but the smile on your face as you sliced and diced the random fruits and water bottles made it somewhat fun for a while anyways.
Use one if your quick builds and do the same tests at the sametime for reference.
So, this begs the question of whether there is a mass produced knife that is actually worth it...
BPS Knives and Cold Steel have good budget options Also Mora
I was expecting worse if I'm honest.
I wonder what kind of knife you carry on a regular basis. Is it one of your own, and if not what’s the make and model?
Great video, thanks. What would you recommend as an affordable knife for the outdoors?
If I ever get money I’m gonna try to get one of your knives because my old gerber is half dead just noticed a screw fell out the other day.
When you're out in the field, your knife can be the difference between life and death.
If you value your life at $20.....the knife is worth it.
How much would you likely price that whatever that is? :)
Just curious..if I sent you a knife from my employer ( I work at Buck Knives) would you give it this test?
name knife ?
I would love to see a torture test of one of your knives
@8:33
That's the same blade from the Lord Of The Rings.
Andúril, you know, the sword of Aragorn.
Do you have knifes for sale?
Electresol dishwasher detergent is harsh on knife edges.
That looks way to much fun
awesome fun!
Kyle... Are you having "too much fun?" Keep it going sir... J
The blade shattered like glass!
Yup.
One does not flick knife parts at their crew, unless they had it coming.
I really enjoy these videos, it shows that cheap goes shit in most of the cases.
5:25 And that is why no matter how cheap the knife is I prefer a full tang knife.
Please run a Mora knife through some tests! ^^
As it's a mass produced knife so I'm quite sure it has some aspects one could improve if we were to make the design ourselves?
Teeth to the sawback look like they were copied off an ontario airforce survival knife. Some survivalists complain about those teeth for the same reasons, but thats cause they’re not for wood but rather for sawing aluminum from a plane fuselage.
Guessing whomever designed the knife just copied it without thought to its purpose
Can you do a flint knapping video now!
This knife was probably for cutting stuff like boxes or what ever or for hand to hand combat since Amazon said this knife was made smith&wesson a well know firearms company
Hey Kyle, an unrelated question : knives being made to be used and not stay on a shelf, what do you recommend for a nicely gorgeous looking Damascus blade suck as yours, in order to maintain the state of the etch ??
Knives are meant to be used. Use it then simply service and maintenance it. Take downs make this a pleasure. Cheers
Dad
@@KyleRoyerKnives sorry for the “suck”‘ it’s the spelling autocorrect… so no special action to keep it looking nice ?
If I gonna buy a knife, I would rather buy a knife from you instead of Amazon!😊
Kyle please keep doing these substandard knife tests to show people that they should save up their money and buy something with a warranty and a American/European named brand. Even the humble Mora knife is a better choice and they are cheap and great quality for the price. It would be interesting to get the steel tested to see which series of stainless they are using.
At 20 bucks are the problems were to be expected.
Agreed but what get me is claiming it's spec ops...
@@stonefox9124 these 20 dollar knives are nothing more than tinker toys, But under the every day us that means cutting things that are made to be cut with a knife . The Dutch boys did a review on Stallone's heart breaker knife from his last move . in the big scheme of things it's crap for 200 bucks .They just did another review on the 300 buck knife the heartbreaker was copied from a little better but not much .but in there review they shoot the blade with a high powered pilit gun who the hell makes a blade to survive a shooting . But under normal us it would probably last a lifetime. Happy Trails
