- In this video I give you a crash course in the design of a part in FreeCAD and printing it on my 3D Printer. This is meant to help those who were thinking about getting into 3D Printing. There are other tutorials you would need to watch. But this will really save you some time in learning how to design parts like this.
Here is the link for FreeCAD www.freecadweb.org
Here is a link to the printer I use amzn.to/2vVZnRw
That is through my Amazon Associates account.
Thanks for watching!!! Авто/Мото
No mumbo jumbo, just straight to the point, precise and concise... Excellent job... thanks man..!!
Thanks buddy!
i found this one video way more useful then the 7 part tutorial i just watched. Great job.
I'm glad it helped you out and thanks for commenting and letting me know.
@@DougBugBuilder Same here! If all Im ever going to do with CAD is design parts, I dont need to know every single tool and procedure in the software. You did a great job covering the essential parts needed to model a printable part.
@@npound7110 Thanks, appreciate the comment.
Best video of how to use freecad with a 3d printer!
Thanks buddy!
A few days ago I purchased my first 3D printer to do the exact same type of work you're doing making parts for my Vw. I've watched a ton of videos to get an idea how to even begin using Freecad. I couldn't catch on. Well that was till today after watching your video. You broke it down perfectly for me to understand the basics. Thank you. Instant sub to you channel. Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Soo glad this was able to help you out.
And thanks for letting me know. 🤙 Aloha!
This was better than some of the tutorials of Freecad
Thanks, I think it's helpful because I take a part from start to finish. Don't see that in a lot of tutorials.
next to the "task" tab there's a "model" tab, if you click on a body in that tab, it will select all it's surfaces, I believe you can also double click a surface to select everything. And when centering things it's better to use constraints like symetry or others, because if let's say you want to make your part twice as thick, it keeps your features centered.
Thanks for the tips, especially the centering. I'll try those next time I'm modeling a part. 👍
Many thanks Doug, I've learned more in the 18 minutes of your video than the last four hours of ploughing through Freecad tutorials. Not saying that they aren't worth the effort to release the full potential of Freecad but for someone who is 75 and just starting out to make simple parts in 3D printing this is an excellent video.
Man I'm so glad it helped. I went through the same as you. So when I had it figured out enough figured I'd make a video to help others.
Thanks for the comment. 👍
Dude, you are absolutely killing the homebuilder game. Keep it up. You make me want to build something.
Thanks Dude, go build something. ;-)
Solid crash course. Great job.
Super video thanks. I was banging my head against a wall trying to create meshes to export and did not realise you could just export once the model was designed. Saved me hours of frustration.
Awesome dude! I'm glad it helped somebody.
Thanks for letting me know.
really great video on building a part to be printed - thanks for posting this.
Glad it helped you bud, sorry I replied so late.
All the Freecad videos that I watched, this one takes the cake.
Thanks! Appreciate the comment.
For meshing the objekt in FreeCAD you can go to the Mesh Design Workbench. In there you don´t must select all faces manually. Only select the object itself and use the "Create Mesh from Shape" command with Netgen mode. There you can push the Mesh to the max you need.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try that on my next part.
@@DougBugBuilder you dont even need to go to mesh design for this. Just click on the last element in your parts list in combo view and everything should turn green. Sometimes you need to select the first one and then the last one. However, that all it needs to do a proper export.
Awesome....you taught me something new for FreeCAD. Create an edge linked to an external geometry was something I was not aware of....but really wanted to use regardless. You just saved me from a lot of future frustration in part design. Thank you very much!!
That's awesome! Glad you took something away from it, and thanks for letting me know. 👍
Thanks for sharing, it's nice that you used a real project with a purpose instead of just a generic shape. This made it a lot easier to follow the reasons for what you were doing.
I agree, myself I learn better if it's a tutorial making an actual item. Not just showing random features of the software.
Thanks for the comment.
This is an excellent video. You summarized things very nicely. Thank you very much.
Glad it helped you! Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for posting this. This is the first video I could sit through and get my test part done with. I also read in the comments below about doing this in Mesh Design, will try it next too. Now to see if my printer understands me :).
I hear ya man. I struggled the same. That's why when I had somewhat of a grasp on it I made this video. I hope your printer understands. lol
Thank you for the great video. The basics really help.
Glad it helped!
That’s cool as Doug, I will give this 3D printing thing a go one day. Thanks for the demo 🤙
Right on Craig, it's fun to play around with.
Thanks for the comment.
Don't do gearbest they rip you off especially if its from a different seller.
That was the easiest tutorial to follow I have found on this so far. Thank you!
Glad it helped and thanks for the comment!
Thanks alot i didn't watch your whole video but you gave me enough info to get going on freecad appreciate it thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
awesome video! would love to see more of you designing your parts and the finished timelapse
Thanks Buddy, I'll probably make more at some point. Thanks for the comment.
Exactly what I needed to get started Doug thanks so much for this.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the comment.
I'm very new to FreeCAD and your clip explain me a lot of reason why I need it for.
Awesome! Glad it helped.
Brilliant, thanks for sharing this!
Thanks bud!
That was more informative and useful than you may think. Thanks for taking the time to make this. My 3D printer has been idle for months because I lost my f360.
Glad it helped and thanks for the comment!
Thank you for an excellent start to finish example.
Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

Great tutorial. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.
Excellent video. Some of the tutorials for freecad can be a bit confusing. This was clear and concise. Thanks a lot.
Good stuff man! Glad it helped you out. I know exactly what you mean. I made this video the way I wished they were made.
Thanks for the comment.
Fantastic job!
You answered several questions I had and several I was not even thinking about.
I agree this was much easier to follow than the other videos, you have a knack for teaching. Please make another video of designing a part any part, start to finish. I can see by your site that you are very busy, so I will thank you in advance and subscribe, waiting patiently to see your next video. GREAT JOB !!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the comment buddy!
Glad the video helped.
iv tried loads of cad softwarer but this is the first video that actually made sense to me so great video mate was exelant even for me to follow, you should do some more videos a1++
Thanks for the kind words buddy! I'm glad the video helped you out.
You all prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know a trick to get back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the login password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Reign Eduardo instablaster ;)
@Damari Decker i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Damari Decker It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out !
Great video, provided me with some much needed guidance!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the comment!
This is the best FreeCAD video I've found so far. Thank you! Could you make some more? I can't seem to figure out how to make a polar array yet. thanks!
Thanks buddy, glad it helped you. I might make another at some point. But this software is not my specialty, I was just highlighting what I had learned in order to 3D print.
Thanks for the lesson, its great
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the comment.
Wow. And I wanted to do this with Blender simply because I thought, I would need to take a lot of time to learn it. The kind how the object is constructed it even similar to programming. Extremely helpfull!!! New skill in 18 mins.
Probably late but for those curious: Selecting "Body" in left pane while in 3D is the same as selecting every face for exporting.
Really glad this was able to help you out and save you some time. 👍
Thanks for the comment and for the tip on selecting all.
Great Video: this helped out a lot
because i just got into 3D printing.
Awesome! Glad it helped.
You didn't cut the top hat down the middle, 1/8" gap would have done it, but I get the idea, and thank you for that
I was going to say the same thing.
Great video. Very helpful.
Thanks!
Thank you. that's what I was looking for.
Awesome!
Thanks for the comment.
Love this video. Covering all aspect a good video should have of its subject title, presentation style, organized roll out, precise details not excessive, fluently paced content no more no less. Good job.
Thanks. I don't use FreeCad on a regular basis. So when I do I refresh with this video and it gets me up to speed again. And I'm proud to say it helps others too.
Thanks for the comment. 👍
Great video, thanks!
One of the most informative vid
Thanks!
Mike I have to applaud you. You have done some wonderful work and have willing to tell what makes it easier to jump to the next step. I have been into VW bugs since I was 14 years of age. Manny have came and gone in 30 plus years after the bite. But you have just as many others say to you you really do give a big inspiration that many want to fallow and make something as clean as your work. I started fallowing you early in your post. I showed my oldest son what you were doing and he wanted a Baja to build. The price of a carcass of a bug from my work at the time was out of my reach. The largest VW junkyard in California at the time ( now closed - small car connection ). So I talked to a friend and he came up with a roller for him. So now 5 or 6 bajas later I have a 72 supper Beatle that I got for a new project and was very interested in the square frame you did and I was looking for a 3D printer for small projects that I have. I thank you for your valuable videos you post and like myself many of us get something out of them. Keep up the great work and all of us are here to find out what's next.
Michael, very nice comment, thank you for that. It's great to hear that you and your son get to work on Baja Bugs together. That's priceless, I hope the videos bring both of you more success on the builds.
FYI, I have had a lot of interest in the chassis. In the coming months I'm hoping to have some videos with me designing a new chassis. So those will have great info on chassis design. Both on the existing chassis and the new chassis.
Very interested in what you do next. I always see where the back seat is eliminated cause of suspension and what not take up space. My new build I will be extending the pan 14 inches cause I would like to have four seats that's why Id like to try what you have done with the pan part of your build. To keep the cost down the rest of the build will be anything I scavenge from the other parts cars I own. Have to eliminate as much as possible to move back to new mexico. It seems like that's how projects get lost having to relocate when a project is started. Cant wait to see what you have for your baja next I be watching.
very helpful on the software part, just one suggestion; the intro is 2:40 - if you get that part down to 1 min... thanks for the Freecad demo.
Very easy to follow. Thank you,
You are welcome!
Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the overview.
Yeah buddy!
Thanks for the comment.
You rock man! This made something super overwelming and made it very easy to understand. I used Autocad 09 in college and was great at it but that program is super expensive. Freecad is different in a lot of ways but this helped me to understand. Thanks bro
Thanks buddy, I'm glad this helped you out. Even I re-watch this when I need to go back and use Free Cad.
In the offline version that I use, I only have to click one surface to export the whole project as an .stl, I may not even have to do that! Idk why that is but I sure don't mind it!
now this is going to be interesting. thanks :) continue on...
lol, thanks.
thank you just what i was looking for
Sure thing, thanks for the comment.

Great Video Thank you
Very helpful, thank you.
Sure thing, thanks for the comment.
i love easy to follow videos
Thanks!
Thanks Doug, I hated Freecad until I saw this vid ^^
Lol, thanks buddy! Glad it helped.
Awesome!
Thanks!
You could also switch to the model tab beside the task tab and select the object as a whole.
I'll try that, thanks for the tip.
I wish I’d watched your video weeks ago when I started trying to learn freecad instead of all that other shit I’ve spent hours struggling with. 👍
Better late than never I suppose. 😉
Wow.
Thanks.
Welcome!
Wonderful tutorial, thank you. Don't know if the software has been updated since you did it, but you can constrain to a diameter instead of a radius so you won't need to get your calculator out. Also, don't know if it makes a difference, but making the pocket I found that you can input the depth to an arbitrarily large value, as long as it's longer than the bit you're trying to make a hole in.
I don't know if that has changed. But those are good tips. It should help people reading through the comments. 👍
Thanks.
Excellent video sir! I don't think I've ever seen a software tutorial video that was as easy to follow. I think it's because you're not just showing what the software does, you're showing how to use the software to make something useful. Most people don't use a program just to be using a program (unless it's a game), they use a program to accomplish some other task.
I have a question about the part itself. Shouldn't the top hat have had a vertical slit through it, so when the screw through the horizontal hole is tightened it clamps on the filter body?
Thanks for the nice comment. I think what makes it useful for the right person is that I'm specifically making one part start to finish, and nothing else.
You're right about the design. What I did was 3D print the part and then I made a slit with my bandsaw. That seemed easier for me. And if needed I could make the slit bigger if needed.
Thank you very much
You are welcome, thanks for the comment.
Useful video. It seems to work better to show the operations necessary to make a particular part rather than try to show an example of every button Freecad has. Thanks! (tip: if you just select the last operation in the "model" tab, you can export it)
you rock!
Thanks!
tnx you very much.
Welcome!
thanks man
Sure thing buddy!
Very good tutorial! However to export the model to STL format I usually create a group and drag all the objects to that group, then I can just click on the group and export the model (you do not need to select every surface).
Thanks for the tip guy, I'll try that next time I draw up a part.
hi, nice job :) that kind of tutorial are the most useful :) PS. Is that project include all ? this circle should be disconected on the middle to put on the screw
Yes this is an actual piece I made and used. I made it all one piece and then slotted it with a bandsaw to make it a little easier.
Thanks for the comment!
I like the idea of your printer! Table is the Z axis.. Do you have a video of just your printer features?
This is the only video I have of the 3D printer.
To Export it is easier to switch to the model tab and, hold control and select all the bodies
Thanks for the tip bud.
How to split the upper part of the bracket? In the printed version it's solid, in the versions holding your fuel pumps it's split in two which are connected with a bolt. Otherwise great tutorial. Thank you.
I printed it as a solid piece, then ran it through my bandsaw for the slit. That seemed easier than having the printer try to print it with a this strip missing.
Your mention of the need to select every face was the one thing I was missing. This is what I call a BUG! Many thanks. Curious that you didn't have a slot in the top hat to tighten against?
Glad this helped you out. For the slot I just ran the part through my bandsaw. That seemed better than trying to have the 3D printer do it.
@@DougBugBuilder I figured that is what you had done. I don't think a slot would have been a problem on the 3D print though ;-)
It would be interesting to hear the properties of the finished parts. I'm interested in how strong they are. Are they UV resistant? Will they break or bend? Resistant to heat/cold etc.
I used ABS filiment for these parts. My only concern would be cracking from vibrations. They seem more brittle than anything. I'll see how they hold up.
Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and hard learned experience with us...how long did your 3D printer to make this part? Would you be able to estimate how much would be the raw material cost to make this part for example? Does most parts come off easily from the printer bed? Is the surface of the part too rough and need some sanding off to be smoother?....thanks
1. I think the print took a little over an hour.
2. This part doesn't take a lot of filament. I'll bet each piece is less than 50 cents of material.
3. On my printer is comes off very easy once the bed cools.
4. I printed these on medium resolution. I didn't have to sand anything. But you can definitely see the print lines. Didn't mind on this as it's purpose is to hold the fuel filter not look to good. 👍
Doug Bug, In my opinion your video is on par with Russ' "RD Learning Lab" videos.
Thanks buddy!
FreeCAD isnt glitchy because its free. If you do experience "glitches" its because its a work in progress, hence the version number is less than 1.0. Whatever version is in the Debian repositories is probably rock solid stable because they don't publish packages in the stable branch until they are bug free. I know your using Windows but generally speaking I would think the same version number would be safer than the latest and greatest.
Typically software is glitchy when it's free because it's a work in progress. Not a bad thing, it's great software. Just helping people out by giving them a heads up to make multiple saves.
Doug, a quick question how to plan for overhangs, will the printer software automatically fill and create the supports, to do you have to do them manually?
So the software I use is the XYZ printing which goes with the Davinci printer. In this software it develops the overhangs and supports. It asks you for densities and a couple aspects. But for the most part it models it and just asks you a couple questions.
I hope that answers your question.
@@DougBugBuilder thanks Doug I appreciate that! I'm trying to learn how use the CAR software first and thennunderstand what I need to go before buying a 3d printer !
That was GREAT, it looked like you designed a course especially for me, thank you very much. Please Google "HotSmart Plates", I invented the only ceramic plates in the world (in history) that keep food hot. My Alibre software stopped working for some reason and I don't have the time to learn complex software again. I'm guessing I can draw on a plane and then turn the shape around the axis (that is a plate).
Glad the video helped. I'll check out that plate.
Thanks for the comment.
"This is where you download for Windows, and this is where you download for Mac"
No love for Linux, eh?
I'm pretty sure if a guy is using Linux he doesn't need to be shown where a download is. 😉
@@DougBugBuilder I understand what you're saying, but Linux is slowly gaining popularity and there are a lot of new users out there that don't fit the criteria your implying and would benefit from those kinds of little hints. Great video, btw.
@@ceebee Well I'm a huge supporter of independent platforms, so on the next video I'll include Linux. 👍
Why does my sketch dissapear when I try to pad it?
whew, that's hard to answer. First reboot the program, then try tweaking some dimensions. Experiment with a shallower pad too. I hope that can help some.
@@DougBugBuilder Thank you for the answer! I was able to find out why. I forgot to add the body. Thanks for the help though! :)
12:48 The most important thing to learn in freecad....
...zoomed in so nobody can see which tools used
But he shows what he clicked around 14:09. It's the same button he clicked at 12:48. His video is still way better than most I've seen.
ruclips.net/video/3eWlU2Ddl6I/видео.html that's incorrect. You don't need to click on literally EVERY surface, just one. The whole thing will be converted to STL, assuming you have a consistent body.
if you ONLY want to do 3d printing and not CNC, sheet metal, milling, lathing, etc you should consider learning Blender instead of FreeCAD
it is MUCH, MUCH faster to work with : you could make the part shown in this video in 2 minutes (no, really).
Like, if you just own a 3d printer and want to design stuff and print it, then Blender is more than suited for the job (if you find people tell you that Blender can not be used for non-destructive, parametric modeling, they clearly haven't used it in a long while)
if you want to make big engineering projects, like a robot, drone, boat, etc, things where you not only need the parametric model, but you also need FEM analysis, (deformation simulation) CFD (airflow simulation), etc. Blender can not do this ... yet ... I mean sure, it has smoke simulations but those are just for the looks, they're not accurate, it has rigid body physics which can basically tell you how things fall and hit each other but not how they deform
Man.... I tried using Blender before FreeCAD and couldn't get it to click in my head at all. I mean really.... I hated it. lol. Isn't that funny how opposite we see it.
I could maybe tinker with it. But honestly now that I'm comfortable with FreeCAD making parts like this is second nature.
But thanks for the comment and idea.
Who on earth highlights every surface? That's the worst RUclips Freecad help video I have ever seen.
Select the part or last step, then export, done. Don't do what this guy told you.
