At least in DBZ Budokai 1, you press Square or Circle when selecting the character. For Budokai 2 and onward, I think you press Left or Right on the D-Pad. I'm not sure about the latter latter games, though.
I really just came to hear Gohan say "Kamehameha". I always thought it sounded cool! I remember when my cousins let me play this when I was little and it was my introduction to DBZ.
I always liked how Goku commented on Gohan getting stronger if he beats him in a match, and it made me long for more character specific interactions. Like maybe if Gohan won in a fight against his dad, he'd say something like "I did it dad!" If Piccolo won a match against Gohan, he'd scold him for slacking in his training.

I believe beating the Advanced Level World Tournament with Kid/Teen Gohan was how you unlocked Great Saiyaman in this game. And hey, you fought some familiar faces, so maybe it was to see his growth ending with a fight against Goku.
Charisonic558 Thanks for watching! And nah, you don't suck. It just takes pratice and being aware of when, you're close to being knocked off. All that really matters is winning and I bet they allowed Viral Heart Disease to be used in tournament modes for that reason. X)
Nope, never be ashamed of stuff like that, especially when it comes to grinding Zeni to get those capsules! When I played Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, I put the CPU on Max Difficulty, went to arcade mode, chose Quan Chi, and then just spammed the hell out of his throw over and over again to win matches and koins for the krypt. It was cheap, but it worked, so I didn't really give a damn.
Breakthrough capsule. Breakthrough capsule allows the player to have all of a character's skills that are possible equipped at once. This capsule takes up every custom spot in the tray, meaning that once you have it equipped, it cannot be combined with any other capsule

I would say Budokai 1 is more "dated" then "trash". It has a simplistic charm to it imo. More charm than say Budokai 2 at least imo.
