Maria Callas - Lucia Mad Scene 1953 Studio with Sound Externalisation GREAT SOUND!

  • Although the 1953 Lucia is vocally stronger than the 1959 studio recording, i had always prefered the latter for its beautiful stereo sound. Her high notes aren't as strong, but they are hauntingly fragile and beautiful.
But here, with this sound remix, that stereo quality is applied and the results are amazing!

I'd give anything to have two minutes face to face with her just to say how much I love and admire her. Tell how special she is. Maria CALLAS Voice is a World Treasure. The woman Maria will always be an example. Maria CALLAS to me is like an angel who blesses me with her magnificent voice. I love to hear her sing but mostly I love to hear her interviews so we can look into her eyes and see her soul that was so beautiful and sublime. I love you forever Maria Sophia Cecilia. ♥️🇧🇷

      Whatchu said!
Full disclosure: I have NEVER been a fan of her lower-middle timbre (with its often "clucking" glottal onsets) or her inconsistent vibrato (i.e. bleeting in the lower-middle, chewy-yaya up top)---BUT, goddammit, this woman could/would/did/does make anybody BELIEVE everything she sang!

Who can give such a remarkable outstanding rendition of Lucia like this but the Casta Diva?!
    Answer: absolutely nobody.
I always loved and shall continue to love and treasure Callas’ unique voice as well as her ability to interpret the pieces she sang on stage in a highly dramatic fashion. But for this instance I am absolutely and totally stunned by her unimaginable ability to give me the dramatic effect with only her voice in such a flowing way like the flowing river: one moment so calm like a fresh cool stream, but another moment like a fierce river vehemently rolling!
The ease that she move with between highs and lows is phenomenal and unique which characterizes her between all sopranos of the world past and present! The amazing high E flat that she gives gave me goosebumps...only Maria Callas with her gift-from-god-voice can do so!
There was, is and shall always be only ONE Casta Diva that is Maria Callas...the envy of all Sopranos history has witnessed...
    R.I.P. Callas ❤️❤️❤️

This interpretation is pure genius .I am left sitting here breathless at the sheer brilliance of this extraordinary , incredibly moving rendition. Callas characterizes her voice to sound just like a young girl , which in itself, is so moving , so tragic. Her vocal acting is unequalled here. All the coloratura phrases that singers just rip off, bring out in every contrasting phrase , the sheer horror, of this young girl's ordeal of being forced into a loveless marriage. One hears in every phrase, the fear, torment, and the sadness of having to give up a true love for her family.and society.. This is Callas at her vocal best . itself a stunning sound that penetrates the depths of our being., and coupled with an interpretation that i have just heard , makes this an unbeatable recording !

    Edgardo, ah, Edgardo mio!
    Sì, ti son resa,
fuggita io son da' tuoi nemici.
Un gelo mi serpeggia nel sen!
    Trema ogni fibra!...Vacilla il piè!
Presso la fonte meco t'assidi alquanto.
    Ohimè! Sorge il tremendo
    fantasma, e ne separa! Ohimè!
    Ohimè! Edgardo! Edgardo! Ah!
    Il fantasma ne separa!
Qui ricovriamo, Edgardo, a piè dell'ara.
    Sparsa è di rose!...Un'armonia celeste,
    di', non ascolti? Ah! L'inno
    suona di nozze! Il rito
    per noi s'appresta!...Oh me felice!
    Edgardo, Edgardo, oh me felice!
Porgimi
    la destra...Oh, lieto giorno!
Alfin son tua, alfin sei mio,
a me ti dona un Dio.
    Ogni piacer più grato,
    mi fia con te diviso,
    Del ciel clemente un riso
    la vita a noi sarà!
    Spargi d'amaro pianto
    il mio terrestre velo,
    mentre lassù nel cielo
    io pregherò per te.
    Al giunger tuo soltanto,
fia bello il ciel per me,
    ah sì, per me,
    ecc.
    Ah! spargi d'amaro pianto,

The fact that people have suggestions and comparisons to this great artist's interpretation completely misses the point of what art and artistic interpretation are all about. To all you frustrated music critics, stop flaunting your worthless opinions about and pseudo intellect. Stop trying to show off your musical astuteness (which only shows your ignorance by the way) by stating your preferences as to who sang what better. Simply appreciate the great artistry here or don't listen and certainly don't comment negatively. Who cares about your insight? This woman goes down as one of the greatest artist of all times. You are in the critics' box being a windbag.

I totally agree. I was never a Callas fan - her voice was far to "steely" for my taste...BUT, after working at 3 opera houses, having opera singers as friends and being surrounded by singers for many years, I have come to appreciate different artists' abilities and talents. Ms. Callas certainly goes down in history as one the most amazing singers the opera world has known. What she could do with that monstrously huge voice was truly astonishing. And we all have our own taste, so...

What a great technical accomplishment! To make Callas' voice sound even more enigmatic and pure with the help of a studio environment, with stereophonic special effects included. To the poster of this Lucia--I agree 100% with your overal assessment. The EMI '59 studio recording defines Lucia for me. Always has WAY before I clocked 37 years doing 2 dozen operas a season at City Opera and the Met. I've heard my fair share of Lucia's.
It's not the EMI/Angel stereo multi-track recording technology that won me over---it's EVERY SINGLE vocal gesture and nuance from La Callas. It's the most extraordinary performance by a Singer Totally in Character--totally understanding EVERYTHING the Aria requires. I wouldn't trade the 'flawed EMI '59 for 100 gorgeous, 'perfectly sung" Joan Sutherland renditions. Not for 1000 of them! There ARE many nuances in the 59 recording that aren't in this one. It's beautifully sung, in fact Callas is arguably MORE protected by her instrument here. In 59 she knows more has to wage a harder battle, vocally to get where she wants to go---but OH when she does--she frequetly goes to IMHO much deeper places. It's not a matter of overdubbing or enhancing. I have no issue with you making this stereo etc, but it doesn't satisfy (me) the same way.
If one LISTENS to the '59 mad scene and let's Callas sweap you away in her pathos and GOOD measure of STUNNING Coloratura (BTW), instead of WAITING for a wobble or a high note not quite perfect----Well "WHO CARES" (to quote Franco Zeffirelli. You're hearing an absolute Work of Performing Art from undoubtably one of the Operatic Vocal Geniuses of the 20th century. And D'acord with the poster below who commented that every word Callas sings is enunciated---You can follow her EVERY word in the italian--even through her most stunning coloratura--and beyond that--she gets so MUCH out of vocal line, every, trill, roulade, every descending chromatic--every opportunity Donizetti presented her with.
She absolutely breathes life (and ultimatey death) into this roll. Let her point the way--even if you don't 100% trust her to hit perfection. She'll make the trip more than worth while, I promise and I'll wager you'll NOT hear THIS aria sung as Callas does on the EMI 59 recording not if you live to the end of the 21st century!
Mine, to be sure is a minority opinion. The 53 version is nearly universally toted as the superior performace. S'ok! I can cope with marching to my own drummer (or Diva) in this case. And after reading much of the crazyness below I decided not to make this a "brief" post.

Thank you for your thorough and in-depth and insightful analysis of Maria Callas Lucia's. I agree with you the first Luchia I heard was her 59 performance. Later I discovered her 53 Studio performance which is the Watershed Mark by which other Lucia's are evaluated I suppose? Her singing is much stronger and secure in the 53. Nevertheless I find her 59 studio recording to be delicately hunting and elegant much more so than the 53 recording.

@@davidmolina7543 Thanks for the positive feedback David. I write a lot. Nice to know I don't put everyone in a Coma. lol
Here's a blog post I made a few years back. You might find it worth a read--and also worth following along with Callas in the Italian. Not everyone is interested in even doing that. You strike me as someone who might make that effort and I promise you, Although an entirely different Tour de force than her Lucia's Her Lady Macbeth is Extraordinary. And to pay closest attention to every Callas detail is to BEGIN to appreciate her Genius. Every Italian syllable is perfectly enunciated and her detail is in her delivery of the libretto as much as the music. She just goes into character!
      paulb47.com/blog/opera/callas-opera/
It is an old blog page so formatting may not still be right. If the text in the Italian -English side-by-side crashes together--just use cntl - (control minus sign) to resize it. Cntl + makes the text bigger.

Oh yes, the great Callas Lucia. She had a few others including the Berlin with HVK, but this is the great one. The EMI Lucia, I puritani, Tosca, and Cavalleria complete operas and the Puccini Heroines and Coloratura/Lyric solo albums captured her in her absolute youthful prime. Stunners, all.

OK I get your dedication to her and good for you. I also will defend such a beautiful artist but to ban people for mentioning the Great Ms. Sutherland isn't right either. We're talking about two great power houeses. Just Sutherland's Flows Duet gives her good credibility among the rest. Drops Chelo and walks of stage. Boom!

I did not press dislike and I can appreciate how perfectly polished her singing is, but it is boring. There is no Lucia there, just Maria showing off her polished skills. Perfect form but no content. Many people adore her, so you must be feeling her differently. But as much as I have tried to listen to her, I find nothing there and my attention just drifts away. Strange, but it seems different people perceive things wastly differently.

The sweet sound of his voice hit me!

Ah, quella voce m'e qui nel cor discesa!

    Edgardo!
I have surrendered to you, Edgardo, mine!

Ohime, the awful ghost rises and separates from it!
Here we shelter, Edgardo, at the foot of the altar.
Qui ricovriamo, Edgardo, a pie dell'ara.
    Scattered and with roses!
    Sparsa e di rose!
A celestial harmony, of, don't you listen?
Un armonia celeste, di, non ascolti?
    Ah, the wedding hymn plays!
    Ah, l'inno suona di nozze!

    Porgime la destra!
    Oh happy day!
    Oh lieto giorno!
In the end I am yours, in the end you are mine,
Al fin son tua, al fin sei mia,
A God gives you to me.
A me ti dona un Dio.
    Every pleasure more grateful,
    Ogni piacer piu grato,
Let me be divided with you

It's a superstition that Lucia is all about high warbling. The long first part is nearly exclusively for the middle and lower register, one or two high c's are interpolated and the famous cadenza is by Ricci. It is not wrong to interpolate a couple of high notes and to dazzle in the cadenza, but it indeed wrong to neglect the telling, wonderful lower voice. Callas gives us everything, with emphasis on the horrendous drama.

It's only because she modeled her personal turbulent inner life into her opera/professional life. Everything is emotional about her. The problem is, everything, EVERYTHING, with her, was either, "Fuck, or FIGHT?!"Yes, her voice is OUTSTANDING. No common soprano nowadays, anywhere, can touch her, probably mostly for all the reasons I just stated previously
