I use a sata nr2000 due to low cm and its sprays nice. Thanks for the video in doingva neckthrough guitar and I was concerned on how to tape the fretboard. Awesome job
Brad, that IS a beautiful finish. How close do you think I can get with my $30 Princess Auto 'Power Fist' HVLP sprayer, the one that looks like a miniature blue vacuum cleaner, or would I be better off using spray cans?
Hi Brad, checked out links for Lacquer, They (Amazon) says no ship to Canada... I believe I've read/heard your from Southern Ontario, where do you get your Lacquer (I'm in Cambridge, Ont) ?
About how much lacquer do I need for a jazz bass body with a polyurethane undercoat? I have a quart. I'll put it in a glass jar because I'm going to tint it. Also, how much thinner should I put in? I'm spraying this btw. Also, do I have to clean out the airbrush after every coat?
A quart is plenty. The amount that you’ll need to tint depends on how deep you’re tinting it. Thin it 50/50. I would say I probably mix 4-6 ounces of product for a spray session. For an airbrush obviously you’ll need much less. You won’t be able to do coats per-se with an airbrush. The stuff will dry immediately when you spray it, so there aren’t really any re-coat times.
Brad Angove I messed up badly. I sprayed lacquer in my bulk head with the doors open and somehow my whole house now smells like lacquer. It is so bad that upstairs, I can see the lacquer in the air when I look up at the light. Also, my eyes are stinging.
Oh shit. That’s horrible. Be very careful, lacquer is flammable and it’s vapour is pretty much explosive. You need to air that out carefully. The fact that it’s toxic is bad enough, but this is an immediately dangerous situation. I’ve never seen a compressor catch on fire, but that coupled with the lacquer fumes makes me very nervous. Please keep me posted on this.
Brad Angove I aired out my house the smell is pretty much gone (Besides my basement). I used the air compressor again today and started smoking and then just stopped. I decided to use it outside and have a fire extinguisher near by. I'm spraying a mocha brown finish, so it is transparent. There were a few spots that are very light. For some reason some of the lacquer got scraped off during the first coat. But I can still see it after the second coat. Will that go away?
Very nice. Did I understand correctly? Did you use Reducer instead of regular Thinner? Anyway, I still DARE you to do the neck finish with a can spray :) :) :)
For the lacquer I used regular thinner. I demonstrated how to do it with a spray can back when I added the sealer. It was a spray can of vinyl sealer. The same concept applied to subsequent colour and clear.
After using wipe on poly on the neck and headstock of the guitar ( put roughly 5 layers and sanded between each.) I noticed there’s almost a speckled look when I put the headstock in the light. The neck turned out perfectly smooth but the headstock has these small dots that aren’t shiny! Do you know why this could be happening?
Brad Angove dull spots, like that kind of orange peel look. But it’s completely smooth. Will this affect anything or is this just an imperfection in the poly. My guess is that i put a layer or 2 over the orange peel so its smooth but still has that look...
Really Taking Shape Now Brad, Thanks Cheers
Casper Boo thanks
Thanks again Brad! Can't wait to see what you do to the fretboard. That red guitar is looking GREAT!
Thanks Dave.
I finished my LP it came out nice thankx buying a tele next. I will keep watching.
I’m glad it went well. Looking forward to hearing how the tele goes.

That’s a beautiful gun. Thanks for watching.
I like this tele, but I'm really interested in that red one, can't wait
I’ll try to get to that one ASAP haha.
Well done!
Thank you
cool music
Hans Xeiomng I’m glad you like it.
Love the black and gray Tele you should call it the hellacaster because it looks bad as hell!!
Haha nice. I’m terrible at naming things. Thanks Michael.
Please let us know how the lacquer worked out on the red tool chest. :-)
Haha it sealed in the dust beautifully.

You should be able to get a decent finish with that. You’ll just have a bit more work to do on the flattening and polishing process part of it.

I’m in Alberta. Richelieu sells Behlen products. They should have it, or be able to get it for you.

Brad Angove also, my air compressor caught on fire

Tru-Oil is easier, plus you can huff it & get High at the same time you finish your neck.
It’s slower, but if you find it easier that’s good. You can definitely get high huffing lacquer too haha. It might kill you though.
Epic. I really need a good air compressor. :o
A good compressor makes a big difference.

Don't put it next to your babies crib....HAHAHA I'm dead!
Seems like reasonable advice...

Do they look like bubbles, or just dull spots?

That’s odd. Polishing it might help. I’ve never seen a finish hold full spots under the surface.
