    The question then is who, back in the period it was presumably forged, was the sculptor who created it? He/she was clearly an exceptional artist in their own right.

    • @detroitfunk313
      @detroitfunk313 2 дня назад

      It would have been somebody in the expedition who was there when they discovered the architectural ruins. They made it on site out of original ancient artists materials recovered from one of the buildings, which was presumably an artists studio. Yes, any classically trained fine artist could have done such a forgery. Nefertiti has very tenuous provenance, at best.

    This sounds like very bad faith. Anyone knows that the statue of the Pharaoh was damaged purposefully by successors.

    It looks like it meets a modern standard of beauty, which would make me think it’s a fake, but its features are similar to other, less well-preserved depictions of the queen, so that’s not determinative. I think it comes down to its state of preservation. It just defies belief. I have no idea if it’s authentic, and it very well might be, but I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if it isn’t.

    The narrator repeatedly refers to the discoveries of Borchardt as "spoils". That is a deliberately misleading word. The word 'spoils' is most commonly used to refer to the goods stolen in war. There is no scientific nor scholarly reason to refer to the discoveries of archeological digs as spoils. The German archeologist was there in Egypt legally, allowed to do his digs. The narration is seeking to cleverly bias the listener to what happened between Egypt and Germany. . . . A better case must be made for the history of the division of finds than this documentary does. This video is displaying a political bias. I am unequipped to judge if what happened was honest, fair, and legal. I sympathize with the Cairo museum that it longs for the bust of Nefertiti. But chauvinism does not trump science and the laws when things happened. Let the Berlin museum and the Cairo museum work it out. Share the bust. . . . And suppose it is fake? Then what?

  • @Justificus
    @Justificus 7 дней назад +9

    The Greeks, the Romans, the Chinese (terracotta warriors) and the Egyptians were fully capable of producing the bust of Nefertiti.
    People forget that the Chinese, Greek and Roman sculptures were all painted and decorated, and not in the condition of the white marble/alabaster forms we see today. The Egyptians were no different.
    The ancient world was far more cosmopolitan than given credit for. Not only trade, but also literature and art was widely dispersed among the various nation states and kingdoms.
    No dynasty was more forward thinking than Akhenaten's reign. Many standardized traditions of culture and religion were thrown out and replaced.
    As to returning the bust to Egypt - let's wait a while longer to see if the Middle East will have a lasting peace.
    There are far too many radicals in the region who are more than willing to destroy works of art and archeological treasures for religious reasons. Cairo is not safe, any more than Tel Aviv, from ballistic missile attacks.
    Germany can keep the Queen safe and protected until the lions lie down with the lambs.

      I was really convinced it’s fake by the way the bust is cut at the shoulders vertically, which the Egyptians never did. The only other bust cut this way was also discovered by Borchardt. No other object discovered in all the history of Egyptology is cut in this manner, which the way busts are cut in modern times. Along with all the other circumstantial evidence, this seems pretty conclusive to me: Ludwig Borchardt, under pressure from the Berlin Museum to make a big find, had a forger create the bust of Nefertiti.

    Is it possible that her husband's statue was destroyed because of someone opposing his belief in this new religion? Perhaps Nefertiti's statue was left as it wasn't She who imposed this new religion? I think all the wonderful Egyptian artefacts should be returned to Egypt where they belong. Whatever the truth is, Nefertiti was an exceptionally beautiful Queen.

    Because what they actually discovered was an artists studio complete with stores of raw materials and pigments - forging a sculpture using original materials creates a difficult prospect as far as determining the age. The discovered materials all date properly, of course. But when was Nefertiti assembled and rendered ? Nobody can know.

    I don't understand why the Germans get butt-hurt when you question the authenticity of the Queen's bust. It's not even theirs. Not only that, the man who "discovered" was on so much pressure and was told that he better find something amazing or else. How convenient. The bust is an absolute fake. I've been to Egypt 3 times and have seen all the museums, tombs, some which are inaccessible to the public and dove under water to temples that are no longer visible on land, and there is nothing, absolutely nothing similar to the Nefertiti's bust. The one thing about ancient Egyptians that is true, and no Egyptologist can deny is that Egyptians did not like anything that was different or out of order. Everything had to be the same. Always. That is one of the main reasons that their civilization survived for so long AND that is why the Queen's husband, Akhenaten was the most hated pharaoh.

    Its a well known practice for fakers to use genuine materials. Especially if you want to fool the experts. Egypt was awash with very knowledgeable experts at the time willing to pay good money for the right artifacts and the wealthy patrons would have expected a return on their investments.. You'd have to say this is a fake inless it can be proved to be real. When things are to good to be true, they probably aren't...
