I spent two weeks vacationing and backpacking through El Salvador last month. There’s soldiers, cops and armed guards everywhere. The people seem so grateful to be able to go out at night, take their kids to the park and work without fear of being robbed or worse. Now the only gangs you see are gangs of tourists. I support this man’s policies! Looking forward to a return visit! ❤

I was born in El Salvador and came to the United States Very young. I have always loved my country but stopped going back every summer after I turned 8 because of how dangerous it was. I finally went back in October of this year and it is nothing like I remember it. So much more peaceful and a sense of security I don’t even get when I walk the streets of southeast D.C. I have 12 actually. I know plenty of people that have tattoos and go there without issue so I don’t get what’s funny. If you aren’t out there acting a fool you should have no issue
People that complain about this prison and its prisoners should remember the atrocities these people carried out, the pain & suffering of their victims.
5:15, nah bro, you don't deserve to see your family. No gang member that has murdered, violated, or assaulted someone deserves anything but disrespect.
Most of these families are probably breathing easy, no one wants to be around these people and thugs don't keep their behavior regulated to the streets. Also taking it for granted that buddy even cares about seeing his family rather than saying things he knows will make his case seem sympathetic.
As a South African, I'm seething with jealousy 😂 It's an extremely harsh way to fight crime but at least the innocent population is finally living in peace. To the people of El Salvador, well done and keep voting for government officials that actually care about your safety like Nayib Bukele. God bless you all!
Did you say extremely harsh way to fight crime ? You think El Salvador has the luxury, time and resources to deal with them like they do in the west😂😂😂. If you were in Bukele’s shoes you would suffer from Stockholm’s Syndrome and sympathize with the soulless criminals
The dude is a legend... hats off for turning an entire country around from dangerous to prosperous. It doesn't matter how he did it, only that it happened.
@thadumway225 those people will eventually get out. If you don't live there, then F what you have to say. The majority of the citizens approve so who are you again? Nobody.
@@thadumway225 The amount is the same percentage as the usa, it just looks bad cause they were a lot arrested but at the end most them have been release, there is people that don't accept that their love ones are criminals too. There are people associates of the gangs that are there but probably in other prison this people are the normal looking one that did runs for them so is normal for this families not to accept their loves are criminals.
The civilians of El Salvador love President Bukele. The bias of western media should tell you everything. They symphatize with these psychotic criminals
Europeans that have grown up in safe, wealthy neighborhoods have no right telling these people they're being inhumane by taking control back from the gangs.
LMAO. Have you ever wonder why EU neighborhoods are safe and wealthy? I'll give you a hint - check what happen when you invite some kind of people like Paris or Berlin did. Or check what happen in Spain in general and why it's most unsafe country in EU with robbery on every corner - and thank God weapons are not common in EU.
Some Europeans have, others didn't, and there are also gang structures in certain areas. But besides that, it's entirely subjective if someone thinks treating people like that is inhumane, that's not an european thing. I personally think the circle of violence will continue even more, but who knows.
I said it once and I’ll say it again we need more men like president Bukele! Willing to stand up and fight evil head on may god bless him with a long life and many peaceful years to the people of El Salvador who have suffered tremendously because of these sick and depraved individuals! BRAVO MR BUKELE 🫡👏👏

I live in Las Vegas and have an El Salvadoran friend in the hospitality industry, who is building a resort in El Salvador because he said it’s rapidly becoming very safe and enjoyable for tourists, so he’s getting ahead of the rush to develop there. Great to see the country thriving!!! 🙌
Well, people are commenting about rights of those that are locked there with said murderers despite being innocent. I can understand the crackdown and despite being pretty libertarian, I can agree that something had to be done, but those quotas are insane and a recipe for a disaster.
I am from Indonesia, and my brothers and sisters of El Salvador, I've never been so happy about the fate of another nation untill now! Im so happy that your nation are now gaining freedom from the danger of gangsters. May your country prosper.
I went to El Salvador last year for the first time with my mom who was born there. She was extremely happy that it was safer to return home for a vacation. El Salvador a beautiful country healing. I loved it and I can't stop thinking about going back.
Seeing the father break down after losing his son in such a horrific way.. heartbreaking. “I have gotten used to this pain deep within my being.” There are no words to say the pain.
People who say this only say it because it's not them or their family members being falsely imprisoned. If it were them being falsely imprisoned they'd quickly change their mind. That's called a lack of empathy. You are incapable of understanding the feelings of others. All you care about is yourself and your own freedom.
Our president did what he had to do to turn our country around. Those opposing him usually cry the loudest when it's their family who have been victimized.
@@khairulamin6323at this point it doesn’t matter. Tip toeing around human rights and all that bs is what caused the problem in the first place and is why countries like the U.K. are too weak to sort their own problems out.

Inhumane the gang members? They inhumane the innocent people's. I'm Salvadoren I'm proud of the President Bukele and 90% Salvadorens support the President Bukele. Thank God now my country is living in peace and freedom. Viva Bukele I love my country.
That president is an absolute hero! Just imagine how many lives he has saved since he has been in office. He deserves way more credit and should be praised on an international stage!
I am an American who has never been to El Salvador. I am now planning to visit there and spend good money just to contribute to their tourism and economy. The People of El Salvador lost a lot and suffered too long. They deserve better and more
I was so proud to be able to vote for President Bukele. We had always been known for the violence and poverty but know we are now seen as a sign of hope and progress. The suffering went on far too long. We are not going back now. Not only has he changed the environment of the country but also, and most importantly, the mindset of our people. We believe and want to be a part of that change and will continue to be.
While I see the good happening there, I find it hard to ignore the issue with the quotas which obviously will lead to false arrests. And no matter how nice and safe your contry becomes - which I am happy about - we should not ignore that every innocent behind bars is a crime. A crime against this human being, and this should be addressed. It also could be you (or me), or our family members. If this issue can be turned around, then there is hardly anything to complain about, is there?
Just so you know. Any rational person from any other country that isn't totally woke supports Bukele's hard stance against these animals. Go El Salvador!
I am so proud of what your country is doing. I am crying tears of gratitude for all the children who can feel safe now. Thank you for risking your life to fight these gangs.
…dramatic much? Your crying ? What a weirdo. How about the innocent people being locked away in gang infested prisons ? You don’t cry for them though huh
And all those they falsely arrest to this day to meet quotas? How is that better if you never did a thing and you get thrown in with gang members for 2 years while the start the investigation. You don't know how that feela till it happens to you. I hope it happens to no one we know my friend...
I am not even Salvadorian but I have immense respect what Nayib Bukele has done for El Salvador. From being the most dangerous country in the world for 20years straight, he has made El Salvador safer than USA!! El Salvador has reminded the world that liberty and safety of civilians are the most important and not liberty of gang members. I hope Nayib Bukele can maintain the safety standards as I remember many "experts" and intelligentsia class mocking this move by El Salvador and cheering for its failure.
Yeah but our country isn't a second world country like Salvador 😅 you never see gangs or crimes here unlike in El Salvador everyone sees crimes happen daily in every neighborhood
Unfortunately organized groups would call it racist. Black people in the US commit 50% of the murders there - when you arrest them & imprison them, ignorant liberals are told to believe it's "racist". Imagine how easy it is for an adversary like China or Russia to control the US populace. Just fund a group like BLM to tell the bleeding heart voters without much rationality that anything good for the country is "racist".
I think we’re missing something. Innocent people in prison, something that kept popping up throughout the video. Yes the president is doing wonders and the people are grateful for what he’s doing.
"I've not seen my family in 10 years," but the prison is only a couple years old. Notice the man who claims innocence, yet those behind him are smiling, they know its all crap.
@@juniormorales559no system is 100% perfect. Anyone that requires perfection when fighting criminals is as bad as the criminal themselves. Crime needs the weak to thrive.

idgaf about the inmates in cecot but if you watch the whole documentary there are a bunch of innocent people getting caught up by the police, with zero due process.
@@flicfan416 that is a travesty. Really makes me feel hopeless. Murder for self defence should be legal. But unless there are cameras in evry corner and hole, how can we prove it was self defence? It's a wretched world. But the thing is, if you look at western europe, aka the north europe, UK, Germany, France, Holland etc. an immigrant could do the wildest things to an underage girl and get nothing but a year in jail. Jail that has furniture, 3 meals, 24/7 gym and a warm bed. They really think that it's the best solution that it "rehabilitates". My ass. Due process I agree with but sometimes I say ghaaaawdamn!
I'm from Asia and my view is that when a developing country tries to be a developed country, Western countries visits and lecture them about Human rights all the while they themselves breaking all the human rights accords in the world
Humans rights are important though. Imagine if you were arrested and imprisoned without a trial and without telling you why. These rights protect you from authoritarian governments abusing their power and locking up people who criticise them.
The question is how is going to end. Is Bukele going to leave peacefully, or he going to rig it to stay in power and say "Don't lecture us on how we should run our country." While I agree with statement to point. Denying critism often a first move for those establish a permanent power base. Good stuff on crime but....
Mexico doesn't need financial help from other countries.. Mexico is not bad as it seems there's 24 million tourists every Year and 12 million people from all over the world live peacefully in Mexico
@budddove6480 My first thought is that it has something to do with connections and the passing of time, mostly due to the speeches Grandma gives about unions and how time is like threads, tangling, unraveling, and reconnecting, but other than that I'm completely lost😅
To think that El Salvador goes from one of the most dangerous places in the world…to one of the safest and welcoming places in the world! The president of El Salvador, well done! Looking forwards to the day that Canada and the US also go this route to make the countries safe again 👍 👏

President Bukele is a badass. He gave everyone the finger except his hard working citizens and carried out his vision to protect his people. From gangs to Bitcoin he is an absolute HERO. Respect from America
on the other side of the coin you could say that the gangs merely provided someone with an authoritarian enough stance the opportunity to turn their country into a police state - since the imprisonment of the gangs provides popular support of this...something about it feels deeply cynical to me...
"People have a right to live in peace." Except for the people being falsely imprisoned. Their rights don't matter, apparently. You'd only care about their rights if it were you or your loved ones being falsely imprisoned. But you don't be, because you don't have the guts to move to El Salvador and risk being arrested yourself ☺
I have watched nearly this one-hour documentary without a break. This is a really good job. I am touched by the courage of a 37 year old leader. As an African whose continent has a lot of weak leaders, this is the type of leadership I yearn for. Those who challenge the status quo and get the work done. I have told people that no matter the threat a country faces and the nature of its people, every change starts from those who have taken the mantle of leadership. As a journalist who cherishes justice, I am concerned about the excesses, and I hope they do better to free innocent citizens. However, one thing I know is that, in dealing with a 20-year old threat, there's bound to be excesses.
Our president Bukele is the best president, no body will understand what the Salvadorian people went through, unless you were a Salvadorian your self. I don’t feel sorry for them they have done some horrible things to women young kids and men.
Because of president Bukele, I feel safe to go visit my beautiful country. Now I go every year, but before that I was to scare to go back. I went on 2005, and I witnessed a kidnapping, and in 2010 my family was kidnapped by those demons! The only thing is that I wish the government could have more people who can investigate, so the ones that are innocent can get out sooner. President Bukele is doing the best he can. 🙏
I’m so torn on this. On the one hand, I think it’s amazing that someone with balls came in to say enough is enough. And his persistence has made this country the safest it’s ever been. On the other hand. If even one person goes to jail that doesn’t deserve to be there that’s one too many. Sucks. The world is so complicated.
it is indeed difficult, and cannot be judged from outside or any of us not having ever lived in a place controlled by unmeasurable violence. This quick drastic turnaround of an entire country does come at a cost of those innocently being imprisoned. but compared to millions living in fear and thousands of tortured victims. just listen to this father’s pain, the immeasurable brutality of his son’s murder - one out of thousands …
lmao only men would have sympathy for gangsters, also if your getting locked up, I'm sure you are some affiliate, a lot of families want to say there shitty kid is innocent. Feel bad for the victims of these disgusting gangs
Exactly. Bukele needs to have a huge system for due process on the innocent. He did this to protect his people but whats the point if he is locking up those same innocent one?
did you watch the rest of the documentary where they actually arrest innocents to fill "arrest quotas"? or did you only watch until you were satisfied with what you were seeing.
@ I did. I hope they get out real soon. For the guy, that was saying he’s innocent I don’t believe him. His cell mates look like they know too much about him. I hope I’m wrong
I was there in August, I left my cell phone at a local eatery, keep i mind this is a $1300 dollar phone which is about 3 to 4 months salary over there. It took me 20 minutes to realize that I left it behind and 20 minutes to go back, the phone was in the exact same spot where I left it, none one touched my phone, it was left alone...my goodness talk about a civil society, I was in shock and awe; it is a truly safe country....
Wouldn't it be amazing if people didn't do crime because they truly saw it as hurting another human, as opposed to being scared poopless that they will be thrown into a prison worse than hell??? I would love to be around people who were "good" for just the sake of "goodness" and love, instead of being good out of fear. Maybe I want too much from mere mortals, but I believe in the possibility of GOOD.
Assuming that guy was truly innocent, he still would have been imprisoned wrongly. The difference is he wouldn't be in such a hellish prison full of killers. So, it is more tragic, but unfortunately one cannot design prison confitions around the innocent who shouldn't be there anyway. Edit: I made this comment before watching the second half of the vid. Totally agree that imprisoning people without a trial is not worth it. At least, they need to ramp back down now that they are out of the emergency situation.
Finally a government who cared and took action. I respect every leader who makes the people feel safe and happy. Why can't other leaders go and take lessons from El Salvador 🇸🇻's government? We should all live in peace
Maybe because a bunch of innocent people got locked and most countries don’t have the insane gang problems like El Salvador has? Do you understand how the world works?
I look at it this way: If the government didn't impose such polices, i would possibly have died due to gang violence. If the government did impose such a harsh policy, i might have been wrongfully arrested. Personally, due to how dangerous the situation was, i would rather be locked up with the hope of getting out alive, than just being dead on the streets.
BRAVOOO Bukele! You are the best president this generation has ever witnessed, and more country's should follow in your footsteps. I know the conditions these lowlifes live in may seem harsh to some, however, I personally think it's the best thing to do so other generations don't follow in their path.
Bravo? two wrong do not make a right. Sad to see the low level of compassion those who benefit from their governmental job. You are most likely one. Please educate yourself because your moral compass is truly lost.
@@alred6568 So you liked it better when they were free to murder, rape and terrorize the innocent people of the country? How would YOU have solved this massive problem? Seems like the commenter is compassionate, for the decent, law-abiding citiziens of El Salvador.
The problem is that you're matching their low by going lower. If you are so high up and strong then you wouldn't be having to make a point by wallowing in self pity and seeking revenge but telling them that they know better and can do better. This just confirms to them that there is no hope and that next time they're out they need to improvise and try a different method so they don't get caught.
My friend is going back to El Salvador for a while, he’s extremely happy to! His family immigrated to Canada because of all the violence but now they’re going back and I’m happy that they are because now their home country is safer!!! This is what a country looks like when the government actually cares.
Tattoos started with criminals who were branded by their own government. Each brand signify according to the crime they committed. The restaurant owners had the right to not serve criminals.
How because you don't think the government would allow you to help hide the criminals or make it harder to identify them? This is why the example of the guy who went to Mexico said that he the tattoo removal place he went to in El Salvador called the police.
I think some people miss the bigger picture, these gangs recruit young people, and those children never have a chance. This will save the next wave of young people who don't want a join a gang, sadly the old will have to die out or change their way. El Salvador should be a better place and have a bright future.
I've been to El Salvador while backpacking about 10 years ago and you could definetely feel the tension from locals. I was advised by my hostel owner to not go out at night and not to go to some areas even daytime. Overall i found the people of El Salvador amazingly friendly and I'm really happy to hear that things are a bit better for local people nowadays.
@ so we agree to disagree. Let stay on the facts that the president of el salvador has a highest approval rating it means the majority of people lives their approves his doing.
@@vincedesilva8987a lot of people approve of it, but iron fist approaches is what makes crime spiral out of control in the first place. The next president after him may make more liberal measures, giving more leniency. To analyse a complicated situation, we have to also see the negatives which is - all of these different gangs are in the same place, with one enemy. The presidents regime. Narcoterrorism got as big as it did because of gangs allying and making bigger organisations
Innocent people are being arrested without warrants/evidence and detained for up to two years without a hearing! That is a gross violation of human rights. You lose two years of your life, income for your family, and you have a record at the end of your release, not to mention the beatings you can receive from police officers. It's true that getting rid of the gangs was a major victory but now the police state will slowly replace the threat of the gangs.
thats the part that is worriesome. Here in the US, there are places where they have quotas for speeding tickets. That's one thing, but to arrest people, certainly there will be innocent people locked up forever. Hopefully, as many of these maras get locked up, maybe they can relax the quotas
16:08 you haven’t seen your loved ones in 10 years? What about all your victims who will NEVER see their loved ones ever again in this lifetime because you murdered them and destroyed their lives?
Exactly. I feel for their families, but those men have destroyed countless lives and families; and they think they need to hug and kiss the ones they love? Nah, they're right where they belong. Alone.
These are low level gangs not organized criminals. Other country’s have problems with corruption over money. La Mara isn’t a cartel, they only rob civilians. They don’t export any drugs, they don’t generate any money so they can’t corrupt officials.
“We need to see our families”. Crazy how you can beg to see your family while you took away many loved ones from there families, maybe he didn’t do it personally himself but join a gang that’s affiliated with senseless murders, rapes. You take the same punishment as they all will face!!!🙏🏽🖕🏾🤝🏾
The honest people know exactly who the gang members & their affiliates are they always hung out in groups, so the people btching about their “innocent “ son or father being in prison are just full of BS, notice all the innocent men are still walking around with their families now, why aren’t they “falsely “ imprisoned?! Because the people know that person isn’t a gang member.
@@ObesePuppies when you arrest 40,000 people you are going to accidentally arrest some innocents. people get killed on death row and get exonerated due to dna evidence after being held for 20 years and then executed for something they didnt do. if this happened here if i didnt like you i could just lie and say you were a gang member. and you would get hauled off the spend your entire life in a box where nobody would believe you. im panamanian and know how bad the gangs are and kinda see this as a necessary evil but there 100% are innocent people in there its statistically impossible for there to not be. it goes both ways you could be the one begging people to believe your family member was innocent tomorrow if this shit happened. its terrible this is a fate worse than death and although most of them probably deserve it the knowledge there are people in here that truly are innocent is fucked up.

95%of Salvadoran’s approval.
Probable facts ❤
It takes God's blessed courage and some crazy balls to make such changes
yes, because now he gets death threats all the time, he says he gave up his freedom to free his people, Villatoro is also awsome.
@@ObesePuppies yeah they are just sad cause now they have to make ends meat again and face the shame front the innocent people that’s been dealing with there bs all there lives🤝🏾🙌🏾✌🏽
Agreed
You don't even know what each of them are in for. Crazy statement. Not all of them are murders
South Africa should implement the same approach 😢
I’ll pray for your country brother !!I hope u find a president as great as him !!🙏🏽
I wish things could change,I was chatting to a S A couple in my east Midlands city of the uk, they were in their early 60's ,we had a very engaging conversation about their homeland.
If the government cares😂
I think the human rights activists also have to talk to the people who the gang had murdered
They won’t dare do that
The problem is that their family is dead and nothing can be done to bring them back so instead of learning how to grieve and grow they use their family members death to justify their self pity as they become the monsters they swore to destroy. The gang members should know better but this system just confirms to them that they're the lowest of the low and they will end up as repeat offenders.
Curious how are they to talk to the ones murdered?? they are dead.
@@Alaskan-Armadillowhat a 🤡
Human rights activists are actually fighting for the innocent people who have been locked up. Ithink you’ve missed the mark there.
Why Mexico not following El Salvador's path to remove narco gangs?
They need a president that actually wants to do what the one in el Salvador did.. The Crazy thing is Mexico could probably get some kind of American assistance seeing as its in interest of both counties an its proven to work now with el salvador
Fear.
Money rules
It’s not the same. The cartels protect Mexico from other super powers like the us
The Mexican government is the cartel
Just happy for the people of El Salvador! They can live in peace and prosper.
That's how you protect honest citizens, this should be a standard all over the world, BRAVO El Salvador 👏👏👏
This is what maximum security prisons in the US should look like
Pfff even the USA has better prisons than Canada. Here they stab someone to death and they are back in the street with tap in the back and a coffee cup the next day ...
Costs too much to staff it. Even the private prisons in the Red states cost too much. You want to pay more taxes?? 😮
Lmao you know how nothing works.
It's rare to see a politician who's not corrupt and actually takes a stand. And good on Carlos for trying to change his life.
Eh I wouldn't say he is not.corrupt, he is doing questionable things but war is war, no soft hearts in a war ..gotta do what you gotta do....will see in a few years if he stops some.of the dictator like stuff he is doing once he can end the war....will see.......chances are though he will remain president for a few more decades 😂
Nah El Salvador was so notoriously dangerous but now you hear from the actual people crime has been reduced to the point they fear less
56:00 that was a really good documentary. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
32:00 Carlos is removing his tattoos. Carlos wants to return to El Salvador 🇸🇻? I think Carlos is crazy!!!
Congratulations to the good people of El Salvador; you deserve these good times. May this peace and happiness be eternal. Wishing you the best from the USA.
Why have quotas for arrests? That seems like an obvious way to get innocent people arrested.
That is creating a problem for innocent people.
No shit. Bukele needs to give these men due process. Innocent men are being locked up for the crimes of others. Good that he took care of the gangs but he needs to separate them from the innocent.
Don't believe in that bs alot of people that are not gang members collaborate with them and they defend them also if you are proven that you had dealings with gangster you are going in also
❤ This needed here SouthAfrica
Praying for the innocent victims to be let out, however I’m so joyful that the peace has been brought back to El Salvador!!!! Thank God!!! 🙌🏻
If they are in there they are not innocent 😂
@@MelanielisbethI guess you don't have no clue of prison works
Mathematically speaking, some of them are probably innocent. However, I think once you’re in a place like that, you’re history.
@@DianaProditeno one care, take them to your house
@@Melanielisbeth They haven’t had sentencing yet though?
So are we supposed to feel sorry for these jail condition … you ever think about the innocent lives lost in the hands of these gangs
30 yrs of vile disgusting things these gangs did to innocent people but now human rights activists want them to have mattresses in prison and live a decent life, that’s silly.
any country that complains about these gangsters rights, Please take them into your country and provide them the human rights you preach.
The exact words from the man himself Bukele
Watch how the countries will deteriorate
No one is defending their rights, more so the innocent people. Also they’re straight up ravaging innocent people’s home just for being affiliated at one time with these gang members. You’re leaving out important details to prove your shitty point.
Excellent video. Thumbs up to El Salvador.
