The Kennedy Center Honors needs to honor Judy Collins next year, as they did her peers Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez in recent years. It's way past time!
My mom always played her albums when I was a child. Farewell to Tarwathie was so haunting and beautiful. Her voiceis extraordinary, I’m so impressed to see how healthy, aware, and connected she is.
I am AMAZED at what you wrote. "Farewell to Tarwathie" is my absolute favorite recording of hers. (You can see how I connected with her many years later in NYC above.) It is so wonderful to see her vibrant, healthy and giving in this interview. I feel very lucky to have seen it.
Judy is beautiful & her voice is always mesmerizing! She exudes sage wisdom & depth, inner happiness, an easy going youthful outlook & her joie de vivre. Walter, thanks for a great interview!
This makes me cry! I have always loved Judy Collins....so happy for her that things have worked out well for her! I grew up in Denver area...& my friend and I used to play guitars & sing....many were her songs! I am 72....Thank you for doing this interview....have to find her new album!
Judy Collins, with her beautiful pristine voice, influenced my path, my loving, my healing all through these years. And is an amazing role model for living a vital and fulfilling creative life. Thank you!
I saw her in 1969 on a college campus and she was so down to earth 🌎. Then I saw here recently about 2017..she was still striking in voice and her beauty. Amazing career. So a beautiful soul.Thank you for this post greatly appreciated 🙏.
Isn't she just a treasure?!?!?! I honestly can't fathom how she still sounds so good at 83 - kind of a miracle - but 'Spellbound' is a wonderful album, and she should be delighted with it!!!
Judy’s angelic sound has not changed a bit in all these years!!! Listening to her sing is always such a spiritual experience. No one ever sounds like her…God bless you Judy, and thank you for sharing all your gorgeous music with us! 💚🙏🏻🇺🇦🌍☮️
I first saw and heard Judy around 1963 when I was 14 years-old. She and Tom Paxton I think it was, were making their rounds on Cape Cod, (and Massachusetts) at that time. They put on a nice little show at the old National Guard Armory, (which is now a court house) on Jones Road in Falmouth, Ma. Judy was absolutely fabulous that night! I can still see her on that little stage wearing a white dress and high heels. She had the most beautiful, big blue eyes I have ever witnessed. I've been a huge fan of hers all these years and my favorite song sung by her is, "Both Sides Now".
We had graduation in 8th grade. There was a vote on the theme and the song we would use and I won with my choice “Both Sides Now”. I got a lot of support from my graduating peers but at first not the teachers. In the end, the teachers not only agreed with the choice but celebrated it. It was as it should have been. Thanks Judy for that and so much more.
@@MermaidCore_ Yep but Joni didn’t make “Both Sides Now” famous. As 13 year olds we didn’t listen to Joni. Our older siblings did. We had Judy Collins on the radio all of the time. It’s to Judy I pay homage.
I have been listening to her since the 60's when my brother sang and played on the guitar " Come Away Melinda. I was so moved by the song I immediately bought her album. Her beautiful voice and stirring lyrics have been a constant companion in my life. I am now 74 years old and her music still moves me.
Love, love, love this! Thank you Judy! You remain my all time favorite vocalist. I have gone on to a career as a solo singer-songwriter (met you once back stage in Springfield OH) and can only hope to remain as faithful as you to my calling as a songstress.
Judy thank you for your beautiful honesty about alcohol abuse and how it effected your early years. Congratulations on your many years of sobriety, what a gift , to you and us. Thank you for all the songs and words that have brought me light. When you are under the influence you can hear the music but you do not hear the words. Blessings!!!
I saw her live many years ago. She sang like a sparrow & played great. She is a beautiful person inside & out. "What I give you" since you asked is a tender, poetic, musically well written favorite song of mine that I still sing to this day.
I was absolutely thrilled to be able to see you in concert earlier this month on Long Island, NY. How amazing! Feel like I've known you forever - I'm 71 - and you are part of me. And I love you ❤
This was very moving to me. She has always been important to me as an artist. Then in later years, as a poor store clerk in NYC, we met and she gave me her copies of "Rolling Stone" when she was finished with them each month. I am thrilled to hear how wonderful her voice sounds in this interview!! That story about Joni Mitchell is amazing. I am glad I grew up with this music. I will always love her.
Several of my favorite LPs as a teen. Wildflowers, Whales & Nightingales, Judith, Who Knows Where the Time Goes, Bread and Roses, and that absolute masterpiece of nuanced vocal storytelling from Leonard Cohen to Kurt Weill to The Beatles--""In My Life." Gorgeous. I listened to them almost every day. Her renditions of "Pirate Jenny" and "Marat/Sade" and the loveliest dreamiest version of "Suzanne" always delivered goosebumps.
I saw Judy so many, many years ago in New Zealand at the beginning of her career. She was part of a group of American folk/blues singers on tour. When she was introduced, she stepped on stage and burst into "Bonnie Ship the Diamond" and I was hooked!
My young heart yearned for the meaning that this precious woman injected into my life. Without her voice in my life over the years I may not have made it. I love her dearly.
I've followed her and loved her music for nearly 60 years and knew nothing about her private life until now. Wish I would have but it is her music that is amazing.
Saw Judy in 1970 and '73 at the hudson river sloop festival. She's been one of my favorites since the mid-60s. She has an angelic pure voice that inspires.
I just saw Judy Collins tor the first time live in concert. Blown away. Her voice still so pure, clear and inspiring. She played guitar and beautiful piano. She's so witty, yet humble. So immensely talented and great storyteller with her music and her connection to the audience.. 2 hour show with no breaks and never even drank some water. In Grand Junction, CO. She has family here it turns out. Avalon Theater, easy to get close great seats in a relatively small theater but it was packed. I feel so lucky.. I'm 70 and grew up with her music. The crowd sang along to Both Sides Now and Amazing Grace for the finale.
Loved folk music and Judy Collins gave us great music. Enjoyed this interview! I am going to buy "Spellbound" of all her own music, looking forward to listening to her.
I too will buy 'Spellbound' but it does have at least one song by another artist: a young Canadian, Stan Rogers, who wrote 'Northwest Passage' - his album of the same name is well worth a listen. I got to see Judy in July of 2021, I think for the third time, and it was a powerful, beautiful concert by a wonderful performer in her early eighties!
I saw Judy recently at Estes Park CO and saw her at Town Hall in NY years ago, what a wonderful person and her voice is still a delight. Thanks Walter and that you Judy. Jim Boulder CO
Judy Collins is my absolute favourite female singer, and I was fortunate enough to see her live. In a relatively small venue in my home town of Hatfield Hertfordshire, with my partner Nonie who bought the tickets as a birthday present. This is the first time of hearing of her medical problems, so sad but pleased and happy that she is still here so beautiful.
I had the honor and PRIVILEGE of meeting this BRILLIANT and Magnificent ARTIST admire and respect her as the VOICE OF AMERICA.MAY GOD BLESS MS JUDY COLLINS
The first time I saw her live was in 1976 in Connecticut in an outdoor music venue with a rotating stage. Like so many others, I'd had a crush on her for about 10 years by then. I sent her flowers for the concert and I was so pleased to see them sitting on the piano on stage. I also felt a sudden rush when she would pluck out one of the flowers and weave them in her guitar strings. Thanks for this show, and thanks, Judy, for singing all of the colors of the day.
Saw her in Plymouth nh she rocks. Loved her show and her talent on the piano along with her voice. . Tall boots tight jeans the lady has style and that’s what I liked the most . Seemed very outgoing . Some say she is not . But hey we all have quirks . I found her funny and charming at the same time Hope to see her show again some time ( don’t miss it if you get a chance ) glad she’s working on music that means more shows 🙂
Just got home from her live concert in Olympia, WA, can't believe she can still sing so well at 85! What an inspiration. She mixed in a lot of story telling inbetween her songs, she seems to be having fun doing concerts. Actually it was more our treat to be able to see & hear her.
I saw her in concert 3 weeks ago in Honolulu. She was amazing. She can still hit those high notes with seemingly no effort. A memory that will stay with me forever.
Beautiful and original renditions of many songs. Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes; Donovan's Sunny Goodge Street; and so on and on. And she never went shrill or too high unlike some contemporaries. Also an excellent acoustic guitarist and pianist, again more than some of her contemporaries.
Saw her with Janice Ian in Trenton New Jersey one of the highlights of my life. Seconded only by catching Joni Mitchell at the Second Fret in Philadelphia when she looked like an innocent little girl with a great big guitar. Those were the days my friend we swore they'd never end.
I remember seeing her perform in Omaha in the 1970’s with my family. I remember her albums playing on my parent’s stereo. I have such fond memories of her voice.
She is of my era and of course, I'm a fan. Saw her once in concert in a small theatre in a small town in Montana. Mesmerizing. (I do wish the eye makeup had a lighter touch. It's very distracting and does not enhance her famous blue eyes!)
I like her better with long hair. She has beautiful hair and well as a beautiful voice. Her album "in My Life" is pretty much perfect, in my opinion. Her best album.
The Kennedy Center Honors needs to honor Judy Collins next year, as they did her peers Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez in recent years. It's way past time!
Amen!!
You are more than right. Every year I look to see who is up for that year hoping it will be Judy.
I saw her at The Kennedy Center last night.
Yess
Judy Collins is a national treasure. Thank you for all you've given us!
Here's to more and more Judy Collins! Her good will is as much a treasure to the world as has always been her voice.

Me too! I remember listening to Judy right before being shoved off to first grade...long time ago.
Thank you for hosting Judy Collins.
Judy is beautiful & her voice is always mesmerizing! She exudes sage wisdom & depth, inner happiness, an easy going youthful outlook & her joie de vivre. Walter, thanks for a great interview!
She is still wonderful. And beautiful. BUT why cut your hair?
Judy Collins is a jewel of the past proving as valuable to the future.
You expressed her influence beautifully
Cheryl Wallingford, my sir name is also Wallingford, from Kentucky. Your name just caught my eye. I believe Judy Collins is an American Institution.
My god we are so fortunate to have beautiful souls like hers still with us
Agreed
I have always loved Judy Collins. Her voice is so clear and beautiful still today. Judy keep on singing, we will keep on listening.❤️

I could listen to her all night. She is so magical.
Judy blue eyes. Grateful I was able to see her in concert in the 90's. Her earrings and her eyes sparkled from the stage.

Aaaaaad that’s a Joni Mitchell song 🤷♀️

I saw her just before the Pandemic. Judy gave an astonishing performance; the years had not diminished that voice.

Very good interview. Lovely to see her look so well and in such good voice.
Judy is a gem and Walter did a gem of an interview.
Judy is an icon indeed! Incredible voice! Great songwriting!
Don’t forget that there was a lot of music directed toward the “union troubles” at the beginning of folk music….Pete Seeger especially.

Agree….the eye makeup, especially eyeliner, is way too heavy and thick….obscures her blue eyes rather than enhancing them, as you say.
always a huge fan .. 'someday soon' is a classic cover .. but what's up with the mascara ??
No matter how many years she acquires, she will always be Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Her voice hasn't changed a bit.
