Hello :) first of all thank you for the review. I am not a pro or anything, I am just looking for sth to take descent pics with, for outings and stuff.. I am thinking about buying a canon eos m100 + the 22mm f2 lens, do u think the m100 is a good camera? Or is it better to save more money and go with the m50
I bought the M50 as well and using the kit lens, 15-45, do you use the EF-M 22mm? Will you recommend it to replace the 15-45? I am very new in taking videos
The Clavers highly recommend the 22mm for photos. A prime lens like the 22 will give you that shallow depth of field (blurred background) and make your photos come out better but try to learn and shoot in manual bc it’s so much better and you have more control of how you want your shot to look
The Clavers 100% great for blogging especially to give your videos a nice shallow depth of field as your walking around and it does nice in some low light

In addition, how do you manage those files in Davinci resolve? 60p is slowed to 50 or 25%? Thanks
I usually use the Neutral picture profile as it leaves me some room for mild color grading. And you should only slow down if you want slowmotion. And then it deoends on the timeline. On a 24p timeline slow down to 40%, in a 30p timeline to 50%.

Hi Joris, what do you mean by the crop factor? I know what cropping means BUT why does the specific crop factor exist? I have the Canon M50 with the kit lens and I'm shooting 24 FPS at 1080p. So, if I'm at 15mm with the kit lens, is there a crop factor there? So, if I get the 22mm, as you said, it'd be more like a 35mm? I'm still learning so thank you for all your help!
Yes, exactly! It all depends on the size of the sensor. Full frame sensors don’t have a crop factor. Or you could say 1. Smaller sensor (aps-c) like the M50 usually have 1.6 or 1.5, depends on the brand. And micro 4/3 sensors have a crop factor 2. So any 22mm lens is always a 22mm lens but depending on the sensor, what you actually see, the viewing angle might change. Hence the crop factor.

@@JorisHermans Thank U for the quick reply mate, my purpose is for making short movie. I am assuming Sigma 16mm is better choice as it gives wider frame but its price tag doesn't suit me , 😢.
Very helpful, thanks ! Which lenses you would recommend to have the best blurry background with a M50 (I have the adapter) in an studio like yours ? Thanks !
Moudi Youssef Hey! These cameras are very very similar. Big difference of course mirrorless vs dslr. I would go for the M50 because it has 120fps slow motion. It’s at 720p but I’ve added that footage to a 1080p timeline and the difference is almost not noticable. And it’s fun to play around with 120fps. Just make sure to buy an extra battery because battery life is not that good. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻
@@JorisHermans Thank you, I don't need the 120 fps because I have go Pro, but I want to shoot interviews en route, and sometimes I shoot short films for RUclips, so M50 is better for that right?
Very informative video. My m50 kit just arrived this morning. I've been deciding between this and the huge(by comparison) sigma 16mm. Do you believe that lens is worth the extra weight and cost over this one, all things being considered?
Hey, man! Difficult to say. I like the 22mm focal length more than 16mm but it kinda depends what you're planning to do with it... videos, photography or both? And what kind of photography...?
For me it comes down to what I'm willing to carry. Bc I prefer to use my camera for travel & landscape photography, it's important to keep my backpack light. A pancake lens is an easy carry, but the 16mm lens is so big, I don't see myself as willing to lose the real estate to store it in my bag --- especially if I'm packing a telephoto lens & tripod. Also my wrist gets tired if I'm vlogging with heavy equipment, which is why I went to a Canon m50. Add in the weight of a gimbal/selfie stick, a rode mic or aputure mini, extended battery and I'm already straining my wrists.
Vikram Sethy I have extra third party batteries but when recording video and the battery dies WHILE recording, sometimes the file doesn’t save until where the battery dies and that sucks. 🤨 Doesn’t happen all the time, though.
Hey Arshad! I use mine mainly for video but check out my other video on the 22mm lens. There are some sample photos and you can also download some RAW files: ruclips.net/video/jcvxmH7UEOg/видео.html
What camera would you recomend in the same budget for video / documentary style? Or the M50 is great? I also make stop motion animation, what do you think? Im almost buying it
Hi Joris, need some help. I cannot seem to use focus ring to change focus in manual when on movie mode in Canon M50 with EF-M 22. What can be the problem? Is there any setting I need to change? I have turned on Lens Electronic MF in settings and turned off Servo AF. I keep turning the focus ring but nothing happens. BTW love your channel
Hey! On the back there is that round button and on the left it says AF/MF. Press that while in video mode. It should say on the screen whether you’re in MF or AF. Does that do the trick?
Are you going to use it for vlogging too? I find that the 22mm is wide enough for most use but not vlogging. So, I guess it depends what you want to shoot...
Thanks for the video, thumbs up! Question please: Do you use any type of lens hood for the Canon 22mm f2 lens? Or is it not practical? I've read it's hard to find a hood for this pancake lens.
You have really nice tutorials, keep on going! You should consider visiting Serbia, a lot of amazing places and friendly people! Best regards, Dusan from Serbia
With the 22mm lens do you always get the blurry background in video or can you have the entire shot be clear and in focus? (sorry if this question isn't very clear, I'm not knowledgeable in lens and camera terminology.)
Yes, that’s possible. I shoot these videos with the aperture set at f/2. If you would set it at f/11 for example, a lot more would be in focus but you would need a lot more light.
@@JorisHermans Thanks for the answer! If you don't mind I have a few more questions. With the ef m 22 lens you can change the aperture or is it stuck at f/2? and also is it that the lower aperture you have the brighter your video will be?
CRTee You can set the aperture anywhere between f/2 and f/22. But yes, if you set it at f/2 your video will be brighter. You have to compensate that with lower ISO, higher shutterspeed or turning the lights down.
Thank you for this video. I really love the M50, but I have a question. My camera seems to miss the 720p 120 fps video mode and even after update the firmware. Do you know what the problem could be? Again, thanks for your help! 👋😃
First make sure the "menu display" is set to Standard. And then in the settings you have to look for a separate setting called "High Frame Rate" and enable it. Then you'll get 720p 120fps.
Hey there, Just purchased the 22mm lens for video and although it's crisper and brighter than the kit lens, I'm noticing if I lean forward in a shot or lean back, the AF takes a second to catch up. It seems considering slower than the kit lens. With the kit lens I've never had to worry about the auto focus in that way. Is that something I am doing? Or is that just the 22mm lens? And is there a better lens option? This is just for talking head (mid chest up), not needing to show much background so not wanting too wide. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
the 22 is very lightweight and a really good choice! It just depends how much wider you want. Maybe see if you can try it out in a store first before you buy...?
I haven't tried it but I do like Sigma as a brand and from what I can read the 16mm seems to be a good lens. I think the extra millimeters could be very useful for video, especially vlogging...
What is the highest ISO in low light that you could use on the M50 with this 22mm lens where the Pictures still look good on TV screen and social media (not for print)? Video not important for me
@@JorisHermans no, only JPEG, I own a fujifilm x-t20 with the kit lens xf 18-55mm, it can take good pictures in low light at ISO 12800 (and even more). I love pancake lenses and canon in general, I'm thinking of buying the 22mm lens togheter with the M50 och M6 MK2, if one of those cameras are as good in low light as the x-t20. What do you think?
Hey Joris. Thank you for your recommending m50. I am to buy my first serious camera and thinking about m50 a lot. yepp. It seems a bit outdated yet still competitive anyhow with its price and functions. Fingers Jauch Hey! Thanks for watching! I’m still playing around with the color grade in Davince Resolve. That’s why it looks a bit different every video 😊 I tried some LUTs before but never got a good result so I hope I get there myself. Davinci Resolve is great for that...

Hence I would like to know if this lens make any sort of noises while focusing (even though if its lower noise, it will be captured in a shotgun mic, so need your help in knowing it)
Not sure, Andres! I haven't used it for live streams. I'm planning to and I would think it will work great but I really want to try it first before I say anything 😊
Hi man! I would like to know if you have used any adapter for EF lenses on the canon M50, I'm using right now the Viltrox adapter but some lenses don't work out with it :(
@@JorisHermans not even this! :( Exactly! There's no communication with between the lens and the camera,. I used that lens in 3 cameras, canon M50, D2000 and T3i and it only works with the T3i.. it's a shame because I need the 14mm for wide shots. Hopefully I could bought the canon 22mm soon!
That's the thing. There is no issue. The only issue there is is people making it an issue and it gets amplified by mass hysteria. I really don't see it...
Hey man, love your content! I'm trying to grow my channel to be as big as yours one day and seeing your videos give me motivation to keep pushing. Good luck everyone!
Thank you for your great videos. What stm lense you recommend for canon eos m200 to make videos where head and half body is in focus in low light from max 2m distance?
I think this 22mm would be perfect. I always put it at around 1 to 1.5m for half body shots. And it's a great (and cheap) low light lens. Only thing, you won't be able to zoom, you always have to reposition the camera.
Now that EF-M is dead, everyone is dumping their gear and the Japanese yen has been declining so much, a lot of the M series canon gear is getting very cheap! Just picked up the 22mm lens for $130

The 11-22mm is a great wide angle lens. Awesome for landscape photography, cityscape photography, sports, architecture, vlogging, etc. It's not the best for macro, wildlife, portrait, product shoots, etc bc of the perspective distortion created by the lens. Sometimes you can get away with it based on the type of composition done in camera and/or cropping done in post. The other thing is the f-stop on the 11-22mm is limiting, so you may want to avoid low-light settings such as those found in nightlife photography, astrophotography, blue hour landscapes, underwater photography, fashion shows, and so on. Bc you're in Canada, you guys have beautiful vistas and lakes you can take advantage of. But if you're more of an indoor photographer, then genres like vlogging, real estate/interior design, corporate photography, family event or live event photography, environmental portrait/wedding photography (specifically if it's a wide shot) might be more suitable for you.
Rock Micah First of all, thanks for watching! Yeah, a phone is great for vlogging but if you really want a camera, the M50 is it! Have you ever tried your M50 for vlogs?
Joris Hermans yup I did , always ran into problems , battery dying , card corrupting , low light shit , and than importing photage all that I’m done with it I shoot with my phone and upload , edit and upload with my phone , that channel name is NADI MIAN
@@rockmicah4060 - Extended batteries exist. There's a way to get a dummy battery and dc plug to keep your camera charged while in use. As far as the other issues, I haven't experienced this, but everyone's mileage may vary. For me a phone could never interpret the same color grade, and a phone's tendency to create chromatic aberrations, distortions, and pixelations get in the way of doing professional photography. The point of uploading & exporting files is to refine the photos and videos for a more cinematic look. This increases sale value if you're leasing them as stock footage. But it sounds like you're just vlogging as a hobbyist, and if that's the case then a phone is of course the most practical.
I do glamour and boudoir photography. I own 3 Canon High-end DSLR, full-frame bodies and all my lenses are "L" series and Sigma "ART". I got tired of hauling my pro gear around to casual outings and vacations or day trips to the Napa wine country. I'd been on the hunt for a used small mirrorless to relieve my self of that burden, but I refused to pay top dollar on the over-priced Sony 6K series cameras and lenses. I happened across a M50 w/ 22mm lens on CraigsList for a mind blowing $200! I almost ran over the cat racing out of the driveway to pick it up. Well, I couldn't be happier!!! The camera has features that I thought only existed on upper end DSLRs! It's so incredibly convenient and small with the 22mm, it easily fits in y jacket pocket. I picked up an EF to EF-M adapter although I use my 22mm 99% of the time, now my pro gear hardly comes out of the studio. Yes, it does have some cons (mostly on the video side), but that's not why I got it. The camera does have ONE problem though, that Canon can't fix..................IT'S FREAKIN' WHITE!!!
The Tactical Traveler For beginners and advanced enthusiasts, yes definitely. For pros, not really, maybe for some but 24mp is nice but I need more for prints and low light video is also bad.

Joris Hermans wow. Impressive. Is there a version setting or settings you use to get that sound quality?
I set my camera to manual recording and then the recording volume all the way down to just +1. Then on the VM I use the +20db boost.

hi sir excellent video !! this 22m concidered like a 32 mm en aps c ???
Hi Mate, what about comparison between Sigma 16mm f/1.4 vs Canon 22mm f/2 for canon M50. Which one is better do you think?
Depends on what you want to do with it. The 22mm is definitely too tight to vlog for example...
@@JorisHermans Thank U for the quick reply mate, my purpose is for making short movie. I am assuming Sigma 16mm is better choice as it gives wider frame but its price tag doesn't suit me , 😢.
M50 is good for photography and filmmaking and cinematic scene? Or do you have some suggestion should I buy?
The M50 is great but you can also wait for the M50 Mark II. Should arrive in a few months.
May I know how to infinity focus in manual focus with this lens please
Great video
i have this lens 22mm but when it has very little autofocus noise when doing video. is that normal?
Very helpful, thanks ! Which lenses you would recommend to have the best blurry background with a M50 (I have the adapter) in an studio like yours ?
Thanks !
I have the m50 mkII and I am looking for a new lens to use for vlogging and in the gym, can you recommend one for me ???
Sigma 16mm 1.4
hey joris, i need your help, Who is better in shooting video in general canon m50 or canon 250d .. and why?, plz ❤️
If it would be me, I’d pick the M50 but... I think the 250D has a remote control. Maybe that’s useful for interviews and things like that.
@@JorisHermans thank you so much ❤️
Very informative video.
6:21 - 6:34 , ¿was that filmed with the M50 and the Canon EF-M 22mm? If so, that was pretty impressive, it looks way better than my 7D/Canon 10-18mm
Yep... and check out my last cinematic M50 video. Looks even better 😉 ruclips.net/video/1KX00l_Aqfs/видео.html
For canon M50 short period battery issue what you prefer battery grip or 3rd party battery ?
Vikram Sethy I have extra third party batteries but when recording video and the battery dies WHILE recording, sometimes the file doesn’t save until where the battery dies and that sucks. 🤨 Doesn’t happen all the time, though.
@@JorisHermans why not you try vitesun usb drive for video making it would be helpful for you
Vikram Sethy Thanks for the tip, Vikram!
@@JorisHermans welcome , if you try and get any good 3rd party battery grip then let me know
Is it good for personal use??such as out door portrait, family programe, for travel photogrphy? With this kit lens and 22mm??
Yep, definitely! But maybe check first if you like the 22mm field of view on an aps-c sensor. I love it but some people find it too narrow...
@@JorisHermans can I got ur instagram so that I can see some pic taken by this camera with this lense?

What video editing software are your using for this video ?
I use the free version of DaVinci Resolve for all my videos.
Joris Hermans I figured our the problem, it was my stupidity. Thanks a ton for replying though. Love your videos.
Hi Joris,
Which one is better deal between canon M50 and Panasonic gx85 for travel and family photography?

Rajashekhar Reddy S Hi, Rajashekhar! I’d go for the Panasonic because it has sensor based image stabilization and more features.

Great video! But should I get The M50 or The Lumix G7? Take care
Hey, depends what you are going to use it for. Video or photography?
@@JorisHermans For video what would be the best option?
recommended 22mm f2 or neewer 35mm f/1.7 for video and for low light?????
Are you going to use it for vlogging too? I find that the 22mm is wide enough for most use but not vlogging. So, I guess it depends what you want to shoot...
Hi Joris,
Is this the same. M50 last 2018 or the m50 mark ii? Or new one in 2020?
Thanks
Hey! The Mark 2 is the new M50 coming this year (according to rumours)
@@JorisHermans i see thanks :)
Thanks for the video, thumbs up! Question please: Do you use any type of lens hood for the Canon 22mm f2 lens? Or is it not practical? I've read it's hard to find a hood for this pancake lens.
Hey Casey. I never use a lenshood. Just a variable ND filter an that’s it.
@@JorisHermans Interesting. How about controlling outdoor sun lens flare? Just use your other hand?
Yeah, sometimes but usually I don’t mind sunflares 🤷🏻♂️😄
@@JorisHermans Haha, great!
It’s a personal thing but yeah, can’t help you with the hood question. Sorry 😄
So you filmed this video with the 22mm?!!!
Pretty much everything I filmed with my M50 was with the 22mm except vlogs.
Great info.
'Salty Comments' love it! I'll have to use that one :)
Its not phase detection in 4k mode. It reverts to contrast detection which is inferior.
Richard France Thanks for watching, Richard! I had no idea that the difference between those two is so huuuuuge! 🙏🏻
Hey Joris! I am picking up my m50 today and I was wondering which lens would you pick to do car photography? 22mm or 16mm sigma?
The 22 would be perfect! The 16 is great but I think it’s too wide and it will distort the shape of the cars...
You have really nice tutorials, keep on going! You should consider visiting Serbia, a lot of amazing places and friendly people!
Best regards,

Dušan Milkovski Thanks, Dusan! I’m putting it on my list of countries to visit 😊 Thanks for watching!
You remind my of Kyle Myers (FPSRussia) His shooting style was quite a bit different though. LOL 😁
I've heard that a few times before 😅
With the 22mm lens do you always get the blurry background in video or can you have the entire shot be clear and in focus?
@@JorisHermans Thanks again for the answers! :)
Where was the video test?
At what aperture are you shooting?
I have m6markii + 30mm sigma 1.4 hmm i want little bit wider I should buy 22mmf2 cause i want lightweight setup
the 22 is very lightweight and a really good choice! It just depends how much wider you want. Maybe see if you can try it out in a store first before you buy...?
What do you think about SIGMA 16mm f/1.4 EF-M??
I haven't tried it but I do like Sigma as a brand and from what I can read the 16mm seems to be a good lens. I think the extra millimeters could be very useful for video, especially vlogging...
@@JorisHermans Thank you! :)
What is the highest ISO in low light that you could use on the M50 with this 22mm lens where the Pictures still look good on TV screen and social media (not for print)? Video not important for me
Do you shoot in RAW?
@@JorisHermans no, only JPEG, I own a fujifilm x-t20 with the kit lens xf 18-55mm, it can take good pictures in low light at ISO 12800 (and even more). I love pancake lenses and canon in general, I'm thinking of buying the 22mm lens togheter with the M50 och M6 MK2, if one of those cameras are as good in low light as the x-t20. What do you think?

Just bought a new M50+kit lens for $400 last week it’s still pretty good for RUclips

@@rockmicah4060 Cool, I'll check it out!
