I'm taking classes on configuration of a specific kind of server, and I haven't used putty in 2 years, so getting this tutorial is extremely helpful to help refresh my memory.
Let me just say "Thank You." Simple is so effective when you're learning. Thank you for explaining and making things simple. I'm eager to learn. May I contact you with a couple of additional network questions? Primarily, what should I do as a best practice to connect my router to a switch which will serve as a primary infrastructure setup to allow a small business group of computers to connect?
Hi there, I have not done networking for a few years but still understand the principles, I would like to work with small to medium sized clients, networks through my business, is it worth focusing on cisco routers/switches only or does it not really matter what would you advise? Thanks, J
hi Joel. Great question. So, taking care of SMB type orgs really requires an IT "Jack of ALL trades". My experience from having lived in that space is the SMB org wants very few vendors. So, it's not likely they'll want you just for layers 2&3. But, your original question about "focusing on Cisco". While Cisco knowledge and certifications are largely vendor centric, the good new is that most of the concepts (and even the CLI commands) apply across many different vendors. Thanks for bringing that up! :-D
if you go to ruclips.net/user/networkadvisor - that's my YT main page. Midway down the page, there should be a tab for VIDEOS. That should list all 100+ videos I've posted.
+Naziru Adam yes, I am familiar with Packet Tracer. But, I haven't seen that type of gui used for real production routers/switches. I do believe there is a gui for Cisco devices, but 99% of the work is done in CLI (not counting the linksys and small business routers wich do use a gui). The nice thing about mastering, or at least familiarizing yourself with the Cisco IOS command line is that it is somewhat universal. Many other vendors use a CLI either just like it, or pretty similar.
yes, I've heard that. But, most Cisco guru's I've talked to, will tell me that there are somethings that are just done best at the CLI.. Thanks for commenting.
Awesome video lots of helpful tips...BTW what can I use to practice using CLI commands since I don't have a router to play with? Is there a simulator you can recommend
2 cables: that baby blue one in the video is a special "Cisco Console Cable". It's 9-pin serial connector on one side and RJ-45 on the other. The other cable is a USB-Serial adapter. Most Computers these days no longer come with a native serial port. So, you need the USB-Serial cable. Thanks for watching! :-)
Are you able to download the latest ios firmware for Cisco 2911? I bought this model second hand without a service agreement so I can not download the latest ios.
that can be tricky. And, I don't know the best place to point you. However, if it were me, I'd probably be checking out Tek-tips website and look for the Cisco forums. :)
Yes Cisco Packet Tracer is a good tool to practice with for those like me that do not have access to cisco equipment, with full CLI functionality and network behavior, though I am still a novice with it. On another note I was wondering if anyone here could help me figure out how to hack(technical term only, nothing illegal) my own Cisco RV130 router to gain shell access. It offers the GUI admin interface but no options for ssh. I even ran an aggressive nmap scan to look for the appropriate ports with no success. Most of these have unpublished or secret web addresses to access other functions like turning on ssh to access the CLI for this router. Even the WD NAS can do this. It is mine that I bought to bridge out of my ISP for more control so there is no ethical or legal issue to prevent whatever I want to do. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA
generally, you cannot change the mac address of a hardware device. On some routers, I have seen where you can spoof a mac, but not seem that on an AP. great question! 😀
hi Eric, maybe I don't understand your question. Cisco's operating system is not open source. However, I am sure there are other programs out there you could run on a PC or Pi that are open source. Good luck. :-)
hi Richard. Thanks for posting. I would not be the person to tell you that. However, there is no shortage of videos out there that walk you completely through the whole process of configuring a router. Good luck sir!
Very calmed explanations and without being nerdic or pedantic to impress any one. Very nice style of voice...
well thank you for the compliment 😄😄

Nice learning and refreshing this command line from putty

Good tutorial. is there also a gui software for cisco routers? Using the packet tracer I can either use the gui or cli for some functionallity.

cisco has their own GUI program on their website

Hi.. What is dis language called.? Is it linux based or unix based.?
Cisco IOS or sometimes referred to as “cisco cli”. (CLI is Command Line Interface)
Awesome video lots of helpful tips...BTW what can I use to practice using CLI commands since I don't have a router to play with? Is there a simulator you can recommend

Is there a video that goes over what the show run reads?
Nice tutorial! Think you can do one for HPE switches aswell? :D
+Z_Zeay hey Z, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, I haven't worked on HP switches in years. I wouldn't be much help.
dammit, guess ill sit down and read some documentations then. Thanks anyways for the reply^^ Love your videos!
HP has many tools to configure their gear....and how to videos, check HP.... if not call their tech support very good

Can you remotely shutdown a cisco router by using a command. I heard you can only issue a reload
right. I'm not familiar with a command that would shut it down. Usually, a power down (flipping the power switch, or unplugging) is required.
