1. Plug in your router into the power outlet in your wall, and connect the Ethernet cable to your computer and router. 2. Press button on back of router to reset the router to factory defaults. 3. Turn on your computer and login, if necessary. 4. Go into command prompt, and type ipconfig. 5. Look at your default gateway address. Type that address into the internet browser. 6. Login to the router using the password written on the bottom of the router. 7. Turn off dhcp and wireless settings. Make sure to apply your changes when you make them. 8. Congratulations you now have a free switch!
I picked up a Netgear WNR2000 wireless router at Goodwill for $3. I plan to use it as a Switch also. Can I add the from my Xfinity Modem to Netgear WNR2000 (as a switch) first, then to my Wireless router a Linksys E3200. Thanks
i have little, humble internet shop here in the philippines...and i have to buy some good hubs....but have some old modem from my past internet provider.....i did what you had posted!!!!! and MAN !!!!!!!!!! ITS WORKS!!!!!!!!!THANK YOU!.....
Hey I know it's abit of an old video but I did this over a year ago and forgot where my source (other youtube video) was and I don't think I set a static IP to remember and if I did I forgot it. Anyway I'm interested in the 'Couple of Tricks' [6min point for 5sec] to find a modem made switch, default IP should be 192.168.0.1 which is different to the main modem/router running my house at 192.168.1.1 - anyway I've tried using Nmap to find the IP but no real luck even being plugged directly into and disconnecting from the rest of the LAN. I know I can just rest to default and start again as its not a long process, I was just interested to know how to find it with out resetting the modem Kind Regards
Working on zyxel p 2601 only on one port 4 in and 1 out for pc. But if you try to use port 2 and 3. Not working. And when is reset it lose configuration!!!! Strange
hello, sir, I set my old DSL router for extending my wifi range it works perfect but only on my computer it is not working on my mobile (android) but wifi is connected with exclamation symbol even I couldn't change ip address plz help me sorry for my bad English
I know this is an old video, but looking for some help. I have the century link c1100Z modem I was trying to use as a switch. It’s has almost the same interface as the one in your video. I disabled DHCP, and have my internet modem plugged into one port, and the pc into the second port but have no internet. Any ideas?
I picked up a Netgear WNR2000 wireless router at Goodwill for $3. I plan to use it as a Switch also. Going by your diagram at @. Can I add the from my Xfinity Modem to Netgear WNR2000 (as a switch) first, then to my Wireless router a Linksys E3200. Thanks
@@NetworkAdvisor followed your steps and got it to work. Great learning experience. Now, just to learn how to trottle the speed on my Linksys. WiFi got hit, maybe because the Netgear is older and the bandwidth is causing a bottleneck to my Linksys. Again thanks.
I am guessing your upstream router will have an RJ45 jack out so must go into one of the same on the new 'switch' like any other switch you might plug into your router. If yours is the same the WAN is a DSL connector format so unlikely you could physically use it. At 2:08 in the video you can see the available ports. Even if you could use it there could be configuration implications using a WAN port as to whether it would be a good idea or not but I would not rule it out if physically possible. IMHO....YMMV ;-) any comments on mine are welcome from any direction! @network advisor BTW...this topic is interesting, I had not considered using my old routers as switches. It might come in handy. Cool. How about doing something on using them, a hub, or other device as a tap to use wireshark with? I am going to make one out of a 3 plug wall plate that I saw online. Have you considered a new channel with some more advanced or specialized topics for switches, routers, monitoring, etc?
Port does not matter. The switch knows automatically which port to send the data through. Don’t use the WAN port, that port is separated from the switch.
You won't be able to get it to provide phone service (dial tone). It's only there as in input port for the DSL (which comes through the phone line). Now, on that topic, if you are looking to get a device (cheap) to provide Voice over Internet (aka VoIP), you can get an "ATA" or Analog Terminal Adapter. And, then sign up with a service like Call Centric. Make overseas calls super cheap - like $0.02 USD per minute from the US. Good question, thanks for asking. :)
Actually, that's a great question. Off the top of my head I would say yes, because all your doing is providing a switch (and the wifi is like a switch). I should try that! Great Idea, thanks for commenting!
Network Advisor I forgot this thread but had already tried that and it worked. Just the speed of this switch wasnt that fast. It was even down the old available speed.. it may function better at your side.
@ 2;15 ; WTF happened to your audio? You really ought to fix that - it is very annoying. Cool video. I have an old MODEM/router, and that is a good use for it if it is no longer usable as a MODEM.
Well, thanks for the compliment. I don't usually get many compliments on my voice. If anything, people usually comment that I sound like Bob Odenkirk. Thanks for watching! :-D

wow, that's great to hear. Glad I could help! :-D
Hubs are never good.. Better use switches.
Thank you, this helped me save money (i.e. not needing to go buy a dedicated switch), as well as give the old router a new purpose.
Ok but once i connect my dsl to the old router it activates again is it not possible to use your old router as a switch to your new one?
Can you use a dsl router as a network switch and still hav the wifi enabled
This was awesome info, I would love to see a video of you turning a PK5001Z into an AP. I can find any info on it.
4:08 t0 jump into setting, thanks

Thank you so much""" i learned a lot....
Thanks for watching and thank you for commenting! 🙂👍
I can't find out where to disable dhcp settings on Xfinity.

hello, sir, I set my old DSL router for extending my wifi range it works perfect but only on my computer it is not working on my mobile (android) but wifi is connected with exclamation symbol even I couldn't change ip address plz help me sorry for my bad English
how to turn it into an access point and have it obtain an ip address from a router?
Probably possible 😁

there’s a lot of specific “it depends” pieces in there, but from a high-level, yes that should all work.
good luck. 👍

Now, which port do I plug my upstream router into?
I have the same router as you.

Network Advisor I have the phone now connected via DECT but thanks for the answer
Do you have any idea whether I can use the wifi network too?
Actually, that's a great question. Off the top of my head I would say yes, because all your doing is providing a switch (and the wifi is like a switch). I should try that!

How to turn desktop into a modem router
Emanuel. I've heard you can do that. Those who I know have, used a Linux box. I'm not that sophisticated. ;-)
did you then test it?
not yet. I've done this a few times before. But, this unit is going in my wife's office. So, if it doesn't work, I'm sure I'll hear about it soon! ;-)
Thank you!
It works. Thanks

Sorry, working on getting some REAL A/V equipment. Even popular YT channels don't make much $$, so I do the best I can with what I have.
are you a human?? your voice is so cool
Well, thanks for the compliment. I don't usually get many compliments on my voice. If anything, people usually comment that I sound like Bob Odenkirk.
