  • Professional food photographer reacts to food styling hack videos. I have seen loads of these food photography hack videos out there, and most of the information isn't true, so here are a few facts to throw into the mix.
Food styling is a fine art, but a lot of the food styling hack videos out there which seem to portray it as slap dash and also very misleading.

IMHO a lot of the confusion about food photography comes from amateur cooks that also are amateur photographers trying to replicate the results the professionals in both areas do get but instead of putting in the time and effort it has to work in 5 minutes (so that they can enjoy the fruits of their cooking). They find out that this idea doesn't fly and look for the shortcuts and thus come up with funny/funky ideas which may work but aren't really what the pro's are doing... Nice to get a glimpse of what a pro thinks of some of those ideas :)

Excellent. Honest and to the point. No long introductions like in RUclips normally. Great presentation. Relaxed. Easy to view and after watching this learned new things. Toppen! Thanks!

Hi Scott, I found your 5DSR in 2022 video and liked it that much I watched a few random ones, then rewound to the beginning. Great videos - many thanks - looking forward to watching them all. Im a hybrid videographer/ photographer - I create a lot of work for leisure industry - caravan parks mainly - starting to get national clients. Suffering from imposter syndrome sometimes lol. Willing to learn, experiment and grow each day is my passion it keeps my brain working.

I photographed a national, well-known frozen foods campaign here in the States. Since the entre and side veggies were different in appearance for each dish, the manufacturer sent DOZENS of each dish (I had to rent three freezers to hold them all) and food stylists spent days in the kitchen selecting the best-looking examples of each and re-assembling them into one package (the "hero") to photograph. No magic involved... just experienced food stylists and a very picky art director. Well, we too used the h2o-glycerin spray and Kitchen Bouquet but that was it.

What I like most in this video is that it explains the spirit in the photo making, not every details, but insist on the intent, the message. A lot of youtubers are seeking tricks to show even when relevance is minimal. But this video is structural.

I’m in advertising and have done food several times but not enough to understand without guidance how to do what you do. Each shit was a wealth of learning. But nothing was fake. I appreciate the video and have subscribed.

Well said! Loved this! :D Do more of these please. I'm a Lebanese food photographer/stylist based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and I think the same when I see these "hacks" videos... Thought you'd comment on the part where they light up a tampon to show smoke coming from a meal.... haha funny stuff.

I started watching you at the beginning of September (so a month after this one), and as the old Virginia Slims ad in the 70's, in the US goes, "You've come a long way, baby". (This material was still very good, but your production is leaps and bounds ahead.)

Thanks Scott for talking a little bit about the realities of food porn image creation.
Great video Scott. One little thing, I would recommend you try is move the mic a tiny bit lower so we don't hear the beard rustle or brush the mic every time you look down or turn your head.
I look forward to the next one!

In the US truth in advertising laws require any food advertisement photos have to use the actual product being sold. If you are selling breakfast cereal you can use white glue as a milk substitute. However if you are selling milk, the liquid must not only be real milk but milk produced in the factory or the brand being advertised. Food stylists can buy 30 boxes of cereal and sort out individual flakes to style a bowl with the most cosmetically perfect bits. It has to be the actual product people are buying. So many of the food styling techniques Scott is debunking would be illegal in the US and could prompt a lawsuit against the company advertising their food for false advertising.

Considering the legal precedent with the Campbell Soup ad and its marbles, I feel like most of the “food photography hacks” we see in most media would be illegal. Am I wrong there?

I worked a short while for a food photographer. I think you are right but most food photographers in the old days kinda worked around each other so im sure lots had the same techniques

Many of these hacks are unlawful in the US. The truth in advertising laws made using non edible items as props in food advertising unlawful. The days of motor oil and detergent making the perfect mug of beer are long gone.

I'm not saying I'm skeptical about his debunking video, but many years ago, (like maybe in '96 or so) when I was in elementary school I definitely heard from one of my teachers saying how they put a lot of makeup on food, so at least for me the video he's debunking at least sounds very plausible to me, being as it isn't really some novel concept that doesn't go way back then.

@@TinHouseStudioUK that's fair. I get conditions can be difficult to work with.
The brightness was pretty high on my screen which made it blown out-ness more prominent.
