He always spoke of 'The Voice", as if it was a separate entity from himself. I saw him multiple times as a young Black kid from The South Bronx, working my way through college at Philharmonic Hall, Lincoln Center, in the early 70's. He touches people in a very deep place, no matter what their musical tastes may be!
"Nessun Dorma! (Vincero)" ("None Shall Sleep") is an aria by Giacomo Puccini. The aria is sung by the character Calaf, a prince vying for the hand of Princess Turandot (the name of the opera is "Turandot"). Calaf is saying that he will win her heart even if it means he must solve her riddles and risk his own life. While the opera is good, it became famous worldwide when Pavarotti sang it. His sound and how he makes people feel breathe life into the character. Even when people don't know what it's about, they feel the urgency and power.

Normally, Pavarotti would have sung this aria entirely unaided by amplification in the opera theatre. As he became a legend, he sang more and more in big utdoor venues where a mike and amplifiers were necessary.
YES!!! You don't get better that Luciano, ; a bel canto tenor. Piero Barone of Il Volo is a Spirito Tenor, Whilst not as good as Luciano, he is better than most. Have a listen to Il Volo singing 'Volare'. Nessum Dorma, means 'No sleep to Night'.
Bit of geek knowledge here. This part of the performance is a little over 3 minutes long. That standing ovation you see starting at the end. That lasted over 20 minutes!!! But I do have some bad news. The Great Luciano is up in Heaven, but he isn't allowed to rest. God has him on a 2 century contract to teach the Angelic choir to sing with more power.

I'll finish the comments of Jeffrey below about the aria. Calaf was an unknown prince. No one knew his name. He had to solve three riddles to win the hand of Turandot, which he did but she didn't want to marry him anyway. But they made a deal. If she could discover his name by dawn, she could have him executed. If she didn't, she would consent to marriage. He sings this aria during the night waiting for the dawn and it becomes apparent that she can't discover his name. The triumphant ending to the aria is "Vincero, Vincero, Vincero" which is the first person, singular future tense of "to win". In English that is "I will win, I will win, I will win." That's why Trump had this aria playing at the end of the RNC convention a few days ago. Personally, I think Andrea Bocelli, the blind tenor, does it just a little better. Here's a couple of links: ruclips.net/video/CMMFoO2H9vA/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/M_W3vJMMFnk/видео.html I think you'll like both. How could anyone not! But maybe even better was this year at Vina del Mar 2024 ruclips.net/video/BPUOVseqT40/видео.html
What are you talking about?? Prince Calaf is vying for the hand of Princess Turandot (the opera's title is "Turandot") & says he will win her heart even if it means he must solve her riddles and risk his own life. You can not really be Italian.

Many thought he was overweight. He wasn't. He carried a whole orchestra and choir within his body.
Lived a long and very fruitful life, imo. Passed away in 2007. This recording always tears me up. Such power, control, and passion !
What?
The sound and the voice of eternity, brought to our planet from another realm, by Luciano. We are privileged to have walked the earth in his time.
if any song makes me cry this is one of them
I saw him performing in person at La Scala opera house in Milan in 1988.
I'll never forget that concert.

@jeffreyphipps. At the point he sings this aria he has already solved her riddles. Now, no one sleeps until Turandot has found out his name.
While I do not understand the words he is singing I do understand how his singing lets me feel and I do enjoy it. Thanks for checking it out.
There's only a couple of pieces of music that can make me have such strong full body chills. This is definitely one of those. Absolutely beautiful
I always cry when I hear this song. was the song of the 1990 world cup in italy.
