Jen, my sister was a sciencey, master gardener nature lover and loved teaching kids. She once taught her Sunday school class how not to be afraid of cicadas by clipping cicadas to her ears like earrings. The kids LOVED it! 😂
Another great bit of progress guys! Hey Matt, I saw what you did there with the screen shot of the weather app showing the current temperature. Yes, that would certainly spice things up!🤣👍
Reminds me of parts of Kansas I drove through that were part of the old Pony Express. When I first tried to pick up the trail it was in a really industrial area in a small town, train tracks, etc. Maybe you'll intersect that at some point!
I am glad Kansas isn't as bad as it's made out to be. Small towns every so often, changing landscape, camping at the town park, a hotel when needed..... I'm super glad y'all are having a good time.
The small towns with hiker/bike packer camping and the back roads through the Plains have been quite pleasant. On the other hand, the strong, hot winds and ambient temperature above 100 has been accurately described as gates of hell. But hey, a few hundred miles and I’m in the mountains.
Really wish I was able to get up to you guys and at least say hi. Just south of Wichita, but schedule just will not work. You are not going to like western KS, at least this time of year. Tuesday is supposed to be a rocks in your pocket windy Kansas day and HOT. Take care, stay hydrated, and if you get a chance try some Shock Top ale.
Grain elevators, church steeples and the sound of cicadas. . . you can take the boy out of Kansas but you can never take Kansas out of the boy! Be safe out there.
That looked like one of the better fishing lakes. I stayed at one several years ago that was just a borrow pit, with a drive that went around it. When I pulled in it was dark, and a regular car was just sitting there with the inside lights on, so I when to the other side. The car made a slow stroll past me about 5 minutes after I stopped. Being that I was the only one there, I did not feels safe.
I usually assume if cars are driving around slowly any place where there’s camping it’s just somebody who is also looking for a camp spot. It’s not a place you’re supposed to be camping then probably locals giving me the stink eye
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes That certainly is true, it could have been that, but I don't think so. The first night I began free camping, I pulled into the Meade, KS., town park that allows it. It was 11pm, November, cold, and 2 cars were pulling out of it. Not sure what they were up to, but it wasn't a site to camp. Good luck to you, stay safe out there.
Please be really careful walking through patches of overgrown 'trails' like that.!!! Yes you are now in the part of the country that if you aren't on four or more wheels, you are a curiosity. I've been on a lot of those dirt roads you walked. Enjoyed the vid.
We have had a good number of folks approaching us making sure we are OK or checking to see if we’re just crazy walking through like this this time of year. But they’ve pretty much all been friendly.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes When I walk near my house (in Kansas) on a dirt road the only people who have stopped are out of staters who wonder the back roads.
It's not always the case, but it's supposed to be the red water faucets are non-potable water, the blue water faucets are supposed to be potable water. But that is not always the case. Like I said. At campgrounds it should be set up like that.
Interesting. In my experience, there is no actual logic to any of the pump handle colors except for purple. Cities often use purple to show non-potable water being used for irrigation. We have countless examples of red faucets, being attached to normal city water through here.
@@TheWinkingPigBarBQ but when we realize the area, much more important things to worry about. Crops, livestock etc. suspect a hiker trail is low on the list of priorities.

I'm one of the old guys watching but sadly no kids or grandkids, however my wife has to hear about you occasionally. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, keep moving, safe journeys. ✌🏻👊🏼
Nice video. In my area, door dash is very expensive. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
When you’ve walked a 25 mile day and it would be another 3-4 to get food expensive can be somewhat relative

Nothing like trail angels, cool water, rail trails and a bit of overcast! May your luck hold and humidity decrease. Hike on! Tortoise
taters tuesday, the day we didnt know we needs, but dont deserve

Yeah, we have been getting hit pretty hard out here.
This heat is ridiculous! I hope cooler temperatures prevail! El Niño and el Nina is not my preference!

Hey Taters, Matt is looking a little salty and in need of a laundry day. 😎✌

Wait just a minute! I started watching at Key West and I'm 42. That hardly counts as 'old'. 😠

Your cicada voice sounded a lot like Kermit the Frog!

Day 110. If someone ran a mower in the portion of trail. Should be good?
I was thinking the exact same thing, a quick trip with a bush hog would do wonders for the unmaintained section.

Not sure if its on the vegetarian diet but you can eat cicadas... just saying Matt
Sriracha makes pretty much anything edible
