Cockapoo Puppy First Haircut Will He Behave for Home Grooming?

  • Here is the first full groom (table training) for a puppy and we will see if the preliminary training experiences I have given this puppy will pay off for this first real full haircut.
This haircut is more than just doing a bit of perfection trimming for the puppy. He was hand scissored over his whole body from tail tip to toes to help him learn to patiently tolerate a long grooming session.
I still gave him plenty of room to squirm a bit and object a bit and let him fall asleep and be comfy and relaxed for the trim so that when his first real professional groomer gets him for an appointment he will not feel stressed out or scared and will behave like a dream and make some great friends in the grooming salon!
Doodles and cockapoos and other non-shed dogs must be groomed at least every 4-9 weeks for their entire lives. That is a lot of time in the dog salon. You want your dog to really enjoy going and to behave very nicely so that you can get the very best haircut, have groomers that are excited to work with your dog, and all around have an excellent experience.
I'd rather see puppies for first ever table training to tolerate and feel positive about grooming then to spend weeks trying to train a dog that has become aggressive towards groomers and is absolutely terrified and stressed out anytime he goes near a grooming bathtub, clippers or scissors.
This little guy, Biscuit, did a great job! I hope that when I hear from his owners and his first ever professional groomer, that the feedback will be fantastic, as it has been for me developing this training program thus far.

@@Edendog she's fantastic! ..thanks for asking 😊. I named her Pearl, she came home on March 11th & settled in no problem at all. Her training is going well & she just loves the world & everyone in it 🤣.
I just gave her a little trim around the eyes a couple of days ago as it happens, nothing major - just some stragglers that would have proved a nuisance to her. I have a tiny pair of grape scissors that did the job perfectly, Pearl sat good as gold - albeit with a little piece of chicken under her nose! 😋 xx xx

@@MsJMac72 yay! What wonderful news! She sounds beautifully adjusted and I know a huge part of that is because she has such a conscientious and loving human-mom! Keep handling her body all over so she stays comfortable with that! Definitely helps for the life of your baby ❤️

Do you also expose them to clipper work? If not, I think that's a big area where you could expand the program. I find a lot of the younger puppies who come for a first haircut may not mind the scissors, but still have a difficult, scary groom because they fear the clipper noise and vibration against their coat. A lot of the common salons (high volume chain places) won't scissor nose to tail like that and only offer shaving for full body work, so that becomes the sticking point. ESPECIALLY front legs, where it vibrates more and scares them :(

I totally agree! I start exposing the babies to clippers and put the clipper body for the vibration on the puppies around 2 weeks of age while they're nursing.
They'll stop nursing for a second sometimes but then they go back to eating.
I do this a couple times a week and then starting around 4 weeks of age I start cleaning paw pads when I clip nails once a week and I give them a mini sanitary trim on that same day.
Keeping their feet clean helps with potty training which I start around 5 weeks of age, and I handle their feet daily since they're born. Even with all of that they still clearly don't like having their feet messed with, but they just look patient and slightly annoyed instead of flopping or screaming! Haha.
I try to get them to explore the edges of the grooming table, too, so that they're less likely to fall off.
I feel like doing this is making a difference. I have had a couple groomers tell my families how happy they were at the first groom.
But if the owners don't pick up where I leave off and they ignore grooming for months and get the dog matted or just not handled I think a lot of that work would be for nothing.
Grooming seems to be a huge modern issue with doodles and poodle mixes. I've been on groomer groups online to get tips and tricks and I have seen such frustration and physical break down of the body wrestling with untrained dogs. The things owners aren't being told, etc. I am NOT gonna contribute to that problem if I can help it. Grooming my own dogs has been a very eye opening experience for me.
Groomers seriously deserve every single penny, and honestly a lot more than they make. The job is hard, exhausting, and potentially dangerous.
Nobody really thinks about how a dog that bites a groomer can end their career or seriously harm it. They think of their dog, but anyway, off my soapbox. LOL
Anyway, I appreciate the feedback!! And honestly, any suggestions my way I will appreciate!
I do struggle getting them to remain standing. LOL I haven't figured that out yet apart from patiently standing them back up until I can be annoying enough that they give up. Haha.
