James cameron has lost the plot, he made his movies by film stock, but his obsession with the ugly modern digital generic look
Wild! The difference of the upgrae to 4K is jaw-dropping!
What is the source for the "full HD"? Was there a release after the Special Edition DVD?
No, only FHD streaming !
@sexymonkey-zw5zq I don't know what you want from a 4K remastering of an FHD version that is exceptionally good in the quality it presents. And if there is no noticeable difference for you, it is because you have to go to the ophthalmologist or look for minute 4:47 and see if there is no difference.
Looks ugly. No grain. It has an obvious waxy look.
@@spartan2188 not when I saw it in a theater.
Maybe I’m overlooking something?
Aliens, True Lies, Abyss, and titanic, have been DNR, and have used AI upscale
Awesome 😍
Really nice video 😁Since the movie never existed in HD, best physical quality available was on DVD, I assume those images are from a DVD upscaled to HD streaming and the actual December 2023 4K streaming. I hope the 4K Blu-Ray that is supposed to be available in March 2024 will look better than the actual streaming 4K, because the overall video quality is rather, ordinary.
These screenshots are only from 4K BD and not via streaming.
Read my community wall correctly. Anyway thank you for your comment.
@@Mymoonization Wow! Why the harsh comment? Guy was just trying to learn more. I have never once heard the term Community Wall. Sounds like some kind of glory hole.
lots dnr and ai sharpening :(
I can see an improvement in colour and contrast , but increase in detail doesn’t look ‘organic’ . It’s almost like they just over sharpened the image. I hope I’m wrong 😑
You're right. Too much digital noise reduction. No film grain. It looks ugly as hell and it's hilarious people don't notice. This is not how film should look.
The 4K is very poor. Every single skin tone is cyan. This is terrible color grading. It's the Smurf's Underwater Adventure!
Avatar to be more precise. It looks terrible unfortunatelly.
@@tmsmkr169 You hit the nail on the head. Obviously Mr. Cameron had Avatar on the mind when color grading this. This is amateurish, cartoonish work.
@@Seriously140 Im not sure what to think actually. Is this some kind of sick joke?
When will it be released in 4k on physical media?
Hmm….amazon or eBay and it depends on where you live !!
@@Mymoonization I just heard it was March 12, 2024
Absolutely but US and UK only !
I absolutely love the 4k remastering of this, Aliens and True Lies and honestly through there was never a 1080p version of this movie at most it was 720p on DvD as they never made a blu ray version of this or True Lies.
True lies 4K will be my next comparison. So stay tuned and happy holidays !
True lies came out only on Blu-ray official from Italy and has grain.
@@Mymoonization Hearing True Lies the color timing was changed and there is issues!
You’ll see !
@@jglg7238 That was a Spanish Bootleg and its actually a pretty decent disc.
Seems like Cameron's Avatar fever of making everything blue hasn't left him. Oh well, I guess getting that true HD transfer is going to have to wait I guess.
I saw that he removed some of the purple hue and now its blue. At any rate I am going to purchase this as the image quality improvements are worth it.
The 70mm version was very Blue.
This is stunning. Like it feel like a complete new movie.
Hi Moon ,thanks for this .Looks Stunning .
Just a Question? Do you already have the Aliens 4k Scan? And If so when will you Drop it on your Channel?
I think I can speak for Many people here as that is probably the most eagerly anticipated 4k of Cameron s inter Catalogue.
Yes I have it in preview but first, you have to wait. Thanks for your comment !
I'm so annoyed by the green tint Cameron put on everything. What the hell is wrong with having real color?
It's not everywhere.
A very major upgrade. can't wait for the 4K UHD in March! Thanks MM
Good comparison, now I have to be disappointed in the 4K - DNR'd and teal color-graded making a lot of it worse (or rather not better). Where they seemingly just bumped contrast (and DNR didn't have much to smooth over) - those scenes look great, but otherwise skin tones look awful, clarity is meh improved. I was really looking forward to this one, so a bit bummed now.
At 6:53, look at Hippy´s face when it goes over to UHD from HD, the grain has been removed and dnr applied, Hippy looks waxy now to me, fail! I knew this would happen, James never gonna learn. Give T1 and T2 o arrow video for restoration, they are not grainphopic!
I noticed that too.
Check out the faces at 1:10, too. It definitely has some A.I. editing going on. It has that over-sharpened, oil-paint vibe happenin'.
Godamn to the blue tint everywhere!
In some scenes its less but in most its more.
Still unavailable here in 🇬🇧 due to the rat drowning scene.snowflakes interfering. 😢
Can't wait for this!
Where's the Full HD version from?
I thought it was only ever released on DVD in pretty poor SD.
Streaming
Cameron = Dr. Teal, lol.
Thanks for your work. I cant wait to see it on my screen.
Patrick, it’s been a long time Mate.
How are you ? Anyway, if you ever have a moment available, I would like to discuss a project or an interview that I would like to do with you. I will explain to you in detail. Either via WhatsApp or e-mail as you wish. You tell me what you think about it. Pleasure to read you. See you soon.
Can you do a comparison for 4K DI Bluray vs. HD Bluray for Face/Off if you come across it?
I will !!!
I know it’s DNR’d to death but I was so desperate that I was willing to take anything at this point. I’m starting not to mind DNR these days.
It's not DNR'd to death. I just watched the 4K and it had plenty of grain. Sure, not like a bountique label scan with no alteration at all, but nothing close to "DNR'd to death".
@@bened22 Huh? Yes it is DNR’d to death. Get your glasses checked boomer. Also, why are you replying to a comment from a month ago?
Ok, Jim Cameron is my most favorite movie maker of all time. This plus Aliens, Titanic, Terminator, etc 🤦♂️ damn! He deserves to have that inflated ego. He earned it! And hey, if you don’t care for this 4k treatment, you have the older versions to enjoy! I’m definitely gonna buy this and Aliens 4K.
The 4k looks unnatural compared to the Full HD version, with too much DNR and artificial sharpening. Colors, contrast and black level on the 4k are the only improvements I can see. I dont want to see actors with waxy faces. This is a missed opportunity to show off the extensive detail of the 35 mm original negative. A shame.
The Abyss and Aliens are very blue toned films.. Aliens 1080p looks excellent hope they don't screw up the 4k.
@@jpw5820 I what way? DNR?
@@cp070476 They've scrubbed the grain and detail from Aliens and used an AI programme to fill the detail back in. But the AI's made a few mistake's adding things in that were not originally there.
They screw up Allens, no film grain, AI sharpening and less blue, just gray. :-(
There are plenty of shots where they stick pretty close to the color timing of the original… and there are shots where they just can’t help but teal it up: 12:10 and 12:50
Maybe someone could create an edit with the perfect color timing for these releases keeping to natural colors as much as possible.
I bought the digital version of the 4K special editon on Amazon while on sale for $10 and thought it looked great. I can only imagine how better the 4K Blu-ray must look.
I might be wrong, but I think the 4K physical media coming March 2004 is not coming to be any better, it might be the same
@@jglg7238 A physical Blu-ray is always going to look/sound better than a stream. Streaming can look good, but it will not match a Blu-ray version of it. Techradar and How To Geek have great articles on this. Streaming versions are compressed/lower bitrates compared to physical media. 1080p Blu-rays have a bitrate of about 40 mbps. Compared to Netflix's variable 5-6 mbps based on connection speed, while their 4K titles come in around 15-20 mbps. A 4K UHD Blu-ray is usually around 100 mbps. Blu-ray discs also offer true lossless audio with sound quality identical to the original studio master. Also physical media's mbps is constant since no WiFi is involved. Streaming quality is constantly fluctuating because internet speeds always fluctuate, hence the variable speeds you see on sites like Netflix. Dont get me wrong, I still do a lot of streaming. It's much more convenient. But I have definitely noticed a difference with physical media. The Abyss 4K special edition looked great on streaming that it's making me want to pick up the physical 4K Blu-ray.
Which version did you buy - I want the version that shows the tsunami at the end, if I am correct it's the director's cut but I have been out of the loop for a while in this movie since the 90s - and yes waiting for a release past DVD.
I may be in the minority but I can’t stand film grain and especially over done grain at that. So if it looks smoother and less grainy I’m all in. A little grain is fine but some films over do it.
Some shots work, particularly the underwater shots, which are a nice improvement. Unfortunately, shots on the ship and in the rig, which had more normal light, just have a horrible aqua blue/green tinge, which I really dislike.
I'm unfortunately not looking at the comparison with a 4k display, my tv died, anyway, is the picture as blue as it seems when displayed properly, or is that just the effect of a sdr screen?
Ouais... Pauvre comparaison.
The SUPER HIGH DEFINITION wins hands down !
Too blue in some scenes, making original shots better than 4k.
Wow! Some of the pics show a huge upgrade in 4k. I hope this is the case in the disc
Don’t worry !!
That one at 10:08...Holy Mother of God, what's wrong with James Cameron?!
Dude, it's an old movie. It even looks like that even on vhs except not as clear.
This transfer looks amazing. I wish we could say the same for T2 and True Lies
t2 was AWFUL! Have you seen the new True Lies transfer. PLEASE GOD let it be decent!
@@TwoTonePictures Its taken a lot of s**t. For good reason unfortunately. It's like Cameron didnt want to be bothered or it's in Arnold's contract for his movies to be glazed over
Thank you for making the screen comparison easy. I've seen the 4K version already but was going by memory of previous viewings.
IMO, a terrible job by the colorist, Tashi Trieu. Very inconsistent and innacurate compared to the previous transfer. Too much Cyan push in indoor scenes, sucking out blood from skin tones. Some underwater sceens though (that would look OK in Cyan) are treated to oversaturated neon Blue. The trademark aliens Magenta hue is now shifted to Blue, also. Perhaps, not everyone is bothered by all those color shifts but they seem off to me who is a photographer.
I agree, it looks terrible. The worst 4K color grading in years.
i'm photographer to though im more put off by the dnr and ai sharpening
9:23 the Ai DNR on Ed Harris face 🤦
The worst part is that some people that should know better actually like it and think it looks great..
The movie looks miles better as a whole. Some half-assed DNR faces don't ruin it.
He made it slightly wider? Probably from 2.35 down to a more modern 2.39
Thank you👍👍👍👍 can we assume Aliens and true lies coming soon???
Soon I hope !
The SFX of this movie back than reminded me of STAR TREK: FINAL FRONTIER and GHOSTBUSTERS 2 with all that pink.
Sí,siiiiiii get ready!!!!!!🎉🎉🎉
I dont know if thats because of RUclips but every time the video swipes from old to 4k shots, the resolution actually becomes better like 3sec after. It pops out suddenly
Here's True Lies 4K digital version ruclips.net/video/X9QPBjhzzVA/видео.htmlsi=T1WaGkYNbmkpMLjZ also there is a aliens, Abyss, titanic in 4K in playlist
5:31 do I see black lines of the composited element only on the remaster?
We are ready for a treat!
so clean!
Amazing comparison as usual thx Moon and have a good day😊❤!!!!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally speaking, it looked great and has become, along with Aliens, my demo disc.
When is the 4K Release going to be out? or is it already released?
March 12th !!
Getting this great vid happy New year 🍺🙏💞
Happy new year Eddy 👍🏻!!!!
No comparison for Titanic
Of course, search on my playlist :) !!!
@@Mymoonization found one but it's not the official release that just came out this month ^^
(Unless you're in Europe, maybe it releases in January)
No, it's the same version that you know and which was released recently. It's simply in relation to my distributor, I was not yet allowed to put the real cover on at that time. That's all 😉!!!
Where are the 4K shots taken from?
It was released in 4K digitally on December 12th I think. ... J
My 4K screenshots are not from 4K streaming Jay. If you read my comment on my community wall, I made it clear that these were indeed physical Blu-rays, given by my distributor as a preview.
@@Mymoonizationnope you're right I didn't read it. Wasn't interested. I was excited to see what this looked like. Color me mistaken and thanks for the clarification. ... J
From the 4K US stream. Its on amazon and itunes. The 4K discs haven't entered manufacture yet.
@Marvdogger2 Are sure about that ?!
It's fascinating, how people can invent anything. It's not because you have these streaming films that they do not exist physically.
Why is the aspect ratio slightly different? Looks like he over smoothed and scrubbed the grain too much like usual, otherwise it looks good.
I'm not even gonna watch this full video but I do have a reminder set to buy this next year. About time. ... J
Why not?!!!!
@@lesstoriesmoomins320 I was watching it on my phone vs my 65 inch 4K Tv. Not so good eyesight. LOL! ... J
@@jaymays8800 Really???? Personally I find this new edition fantastic!!!!
All the Cameron 4Ks are terrible. DNR'd & AI upscaled to hell. Wax faces + teal tint.
I dont see any problems with this 4k stop acting like a cry baby and be happy that the abyss finnaly is coming out on blu ray qfter 35 years.!
@@markusforsberg6741 Abyss & True Lies 4K are garbage. Just like LOTR 4K was garbage and inferior to the old Bluray. 4K doesn't magically make it better. If we don't complain and just buy sabotaged 4K releases, this will keep on happening.
Lol no, Titanic is incredible in 4k, as well as T2. Yes there's some DNR but they take so much care about details that you don't notice it. And Titanic was worked on shot by shot to be as detailed as possible and it's one of the best 4k restoration ever made.
Whatcha smokin?
@@Kerrogann If you think titanic is one of the best 4K restoration, you probably never seen, Lawrence of Arabia 4K, the wizard of oz 4k, my fair lady 4k, these are real proper 4K restoration films
