The hagia Sophia was at one time not only a cathedral but the largest in the world . The reason its not ornate now is because when the turks conqured Istanbul ( at the time it was called Constantinople) in 1453 they converted the hagia sophia onto a mosque and plastered over all the art because they believe depicting humans (and i think animals but dont quote me on that part) is idolatry. That is why most muslim art is in the form of plant life and geometric patterns. All of that early Christian art is still there under the plaster and so is ornate floors under the carpets
What nonsense are you talking about.. It may have been plastered during the Ottoman period, but after it became a museum, it all became visible again.. We protect historical artifacts in Turkey and there are strict rules, the average Turkish person does not damage historical artifacts. It has become a mosque again now, but Jesus and his apostles are visible. We know what it was built for and its current state does not mean that we do not accept its essence. Those who plastered in the past and what you are doing now are exactly the same thing, plastering.

I posted my comment before you showed the museum so you most likely already knew everything i said
Might be. But Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Cami) which was built by the Ottoman Turks in the 17th century is way better looking both inside and outside.
