So keybinds are personal, and in that moment where you feel like "man I can't get the hang of this because I expect it to be something else" just change it, in that moment. You'll thank yourself later. So for your stick you'd want to transpose yaw to the tilt on the stick, and the roll to the twist function since you complained about it in the video. But also don't be afraid to try stuff.
Don't worry too much about the second stick for now either. You can always add it later if you really want to, but it's not significantly better or worse, it just gives you more granular sustained control of your maneuvering thrusters, which you can learn on any control input, even keyboard/mouse. But again, it's all personal.
To anyone reading this who's interested in Star Citizen, the peripherals can be more natural or enhance the fun of your experience or whatever, but you do not need them in any capacity. Spend and buy what you want, but don't just fall down the pit of "gear" unprepared.

Good advice to change your bindings to suit you. Doesn't matter what all of us think is best. There are good arguments for both ways of binding your tilt and twist motions, so try them both out and go with what feels comfortable for how you want to fly. If you try out both ways, I would suggest that you give yourself a chance to acclimate before you decide. At first I thought one way felt totally weird, and a week later I tried it out again and it clicked for me.

    7:50 ....yeah. .....I was expecting that....😆
My opinion : change turn binding with roll binding. Thank me later.
Also, change the reverse from the throttle stick to a button or something. Far back of your stick should always be zero speed. Otherwise you will strangle finding zero when needed and moving backwards when not needed....

Yeah. I plan on getting rudder pedals soon, at which time yaw will go on those, while aileron roll will go to x axis on the stick. But, when I have it all on the stick, I find it easier to put roll on the twist and use the stick to control the direction of the nose.

agreed...switch it up so that roll is your twist so you don't have to fight what your brain already wants to do. Also, some of your throttle control issue is because of how much you reach for it. Like you said in the beginning of the vid..you gotta get a feel for it. One more thing on the throttle arm. If you look at your character in the cockpit, their throttle arm is resting. This is the same if you look at regular flight controls. Maybe you could put something on the desk that is inline with the throttle so your arm isn't hanging and causing you to move the throttle without meaning to. Final thought, that flight stick should have come with the piece to make it left handed if you feel like you want to switch hands. Dual stick is also fun but setting it up right can be a bit of a job. Love your content keep up the great work man :)

Agreed ... roll 90 deg and then pull back on the stick to turn. When turn is done, center stick and then roll opposite direction to level your ship. That will will make pulling Gs from the turn, the easiest for the pilot. This is the technique that is used by real pilots to turn.

    • @albatrossstew3018
      @albatrossstew3018 4 года назад

Agreed. For those new to HOTAS it might be best to learn it on a flight simulator first, as roll-and-pitch manoeuvering is more intuitive there. Roll to bank, pitch up a little, and the turn happens. Yaw is mostly just for low-speed adjustment, like crosswind landings. Once familiar, it's easy to transfer it to a space game like SC.

Used a stick and throttle for 2 years now and its the best way to go, you can map some extra buttons for important stuff. Use throttle increase for forward and s for revers or down hat button so much more imersive and adjustable.

Remap is needed after every update :-)

Yeah. I use that exact hardware setup. I have my throttle set to forward only, the throttle joy set for wasd and the little up/down switch next to it for up and down thrust. If the yaw/roll thing keeps tripping you up, you can definitely switch those in the keybinds, too.
To anyone getting a hotas, it's well worth it to tailor your binds to what's intuitive to you. Spend the time to get it setup just right.

Cobra, we use that exact HOTAS along with a Logitech Heavy Equipment Side Panel and configure it all with Joystick Gremlin. We do that because Star Citizen doesn't have mode switching for the controls the way Elite Dangerous does. Joystick Gremlin changes the controls when we lower and raise the landing gear, go into VTOL mode, or go in and out of combat. I wish Star Citizen did this on its own. Joystick Gremlin also adjusts the dead zones and other parameters of the joystick and throttle, so they respond better. We're willing to help if you want to use the software. It is a bit of work to get started but once you begin using you won't go back to using a HOTAS without it. We can help if you want, we're in CobroForce.

Some advice; if you want a smoother input on the throttle to where it doesnt feel so janky at minor adjustments, you can remove the backplate under it and adjust the resistance detent with a screwdriver. Just dont back off too much otherwise the throttle input will be too loose....unless you want it that way. I adjusted mine just enough to it was butter smooth without any slack, but enough resistance to hold in place and not move commanded.

Hey Cobra! I tested out that exact Thrustmaster HOTAS in 3.9, and really liked it! I switched to something else, but it was a close call.
For your THROTTLE, I agree with a few others here: Just bind it so it goes forward from 0-100%. I set up one of the 2 small buttons on front of the throttle (where your ring finger and middle finger rest) to act as the Reverse mode while you're holding it down. Super easy and intuitive that way! You can also try out setting that reverse button as a toggle (so you'd tap instead of hold to switch), just pick the one that feels better to you.
I set the INDEX FINGER STICK on the throttle to up/down and left/right strafe, and it's incredibly comfortable to use that way. I'm betting that's how yours is set up as well.
The PADDLES in front of the throttle are fun to play around with! I first set them up as forward/back strafe, which nicely complemented the index finger stick strafe directions. That combo worked for precise positioning when landing, but your fingers might feel slightly crowded when trying to use all three strafe axes at the same time. So I also tried the paddles for left/right strafe, and that worked nicely and felt pretty intuitive as well, especially if you like to horizontally strafe a lot when maneuvering at speed. But my fingers are short and I found I hard a hard time reaching the paddles during flight, so I went back to using it for precise, controlled maneuvers. I'm pretty sure you can bind the paddles to other things, too.
Have fun! I'm getting ready to start rebinding my HOTAS for 3.10, can't wait to relearn flying, too!

If you swap it so that X is yaw, and twist is roll then it will make things easier for you in the long run. X has more precision than twist so it's better for aiming. It took me a while to get used to using it that way but it's helped me out with dogfighting.

    Dual Stick (Virpil)
    Left Hand. Twist= Strafe Up/Down. Forward/Back=Thrust up/Down. Side to Side= Strafe Left/Right.
Right Hand. Basically what you have now. Twist= Yaw. Forward/Back= Pitch Up/Down. Side to side= Roll Left/Right.
    The rest is Preference.
If I could afford the Virpil Throttle right now I would consider switching back to a Throttle setup. I had the TM set and I wasn't happy with the throttle.
The gear you got now is a good intro to HOTAS or HOSAS. You'll know if you like it pretty quick. Then you can start planning for better gear.
Personally, the instant I got my first stick I couldn't go back to KBM.

I use the same hotas but installed the bearing upgrade that corehawked makes on etsy. It makes all the difference. The HOTAS moves very smoothly and you can feel the center position with the help of a magnet. Anyone doing this setup absolutely needs to get this upgrade. Key bindings are always a personal preference. I have my stick setup so when I twist, it will roll my ship. Seems more intuitive to me. On the joystick, I have my secondary weapons set for the right button, middle is missiles, and right button is counter measures. I also use a head tracker I got for $40 from ebay, and man does that make the game so much more enjoyable.'

Hi, Cobra, welcome to the Sim world, Trust me, after you get used to your new setup, you will never want to go back to keyboard mouse again. A small hint from a flight sim addict, Just keep this in mind, focus on your own natural reflections, and set up your controllers in the way that you expect them to react. Don't use other people's setup create your own setup.
For space Sims you need to have full access to straf moves as you have on pitch/yaw. Straf moves are important and will give you full control on your ship. With Hotas you will barely use straf moves just because they are not easy to access, for this you will need a dual setup. You have crashed because you didn't/couldn't use straf up in there, straf up and boost is a life saver in such emergency situations :)
I would also recommend to use pedals as well, if you have a wheel laying around use its pedals, just setup pedals to act as separate axis, in its own settings software.
    Have fun.

I know your community pals were trying to help, but GOLDEN RULE 1 for HOTAS controls is:
    >Think about what YOU think a control should do, and map that control to what YOU expect.<
Otherwise you'll be battling you own intuition to train into new habits you probably didn't need too.
For me, I twist the stick to roll the ship for instance.

Stared with hotas, then moved to dual stick and now use dual sticks and pedals. if you drive a car the pedals feel natural.
The way you have the roll and yaw setup now is more like a plane than a spaceship, if it feels strange to you just swap it. :)
Also play close attention to the > < marker it indicates you ship direction. When using the mouse to pilot you use it to steer and there is a line connecting it to the center of the screen.
They should also show this line when using sticks imo would make it a bit easier.

Don't use yaw to turn. Just use it for small corrections, or when going slow.
When going faster, roll in the direction you want to turn and pull up, then If you need to make a tighter turn, you can add "upward" thrust and it'll slow you down a bit.

  • @jamoblair7245

Best way to turn is to roll left or right and pull up, it's how pilots turn in planes, although plane wings cause lift so in planes you don't usually need to pull up as much as you would in a space ship.

    Hi,
In decoupled mode you need to keep your speed up or use vtol thrusters to maintain height. A more aerodynamic ship would help.
I keep roll and turn as you have it as it can then be used in other flight sims. (you know, immersion).
In flight sims you roll and pitch to turn in atmo as a turn only will cause to to crab sideways at first but I am a war thunder refugee, swap them if you like.
I use the Throttle as pointed out by Zark with it not also used for reverse.
For landing I use the hat controls to provide left right up down forward back thruster control (my hotas is an X52 Pro)
You need to develop the muscle memory to ace it - keep practicing.
I must say that the handling of the aurora was consistent with a flying brick good job.

I also play the game with a Thrustmaster T16000M FCS Flight Pack which includes stick, throttle and rudder pedals. My throttle is only used to strafe forward. I press my left foot pedal to strafe backward. I also use the rotational movement of my rudder pedals as my yaw axis. I use the little joystick located inside the trottle to control my head movement inside the cockpit. I use the little paddles also located on the throttle to strafe left and right. I also use my rudder pedals as gas and break pedals for ground vehicules. I also use the rotational movement of the rudder pedals to turn left and right when using space bikes like the Nox.

I have been running a HOTAS for around 5 years or so, I love it, as for the throttle I have mine set up for forward thrust only, then I use a razer gamepad for my WASD and other keys, that sits right next to the throttle right hand side, I use the gamepad for reverse, mobi-glass, and so on, as for the twisting, I left mine as normal Yaw, then the side to side pitch I kept it set up as roll. I bound space break, and after burner/boost on the throttle also, along with the throttle limiter. I'm not to familiar with the Thrustmaster hotas but I love it. Take your time, and practice you will get used to it and have a ton of fun, just remember you are learning how to fly with a Hotas on a new flight model also, yes I know you played the PTU but its gonna take you some time to get used to it.

I used to use that setup all the time for Elite Dangerous - haven't tried star citizen yet.
    I will offer some tips
Star Citizen's Default setup seems to mimic how an airplane would control as far as the Yaw and Roll are concerned. Based on myself and other people's profiles I'd say the majority of players prefer to bind the stick to Yaw, and the twist to roll for space games.
As others have suggested you might want to change the way the throttle works as well. I personally find it easier to set it up so that when the throttle is full back it's 0% rather than having it do both forward and reverse. It's just because that throttle doesn't have a center detent.
What I like to do is set up the paddle on the front of the throttle to be a forward and reverse thruster, similar to what you described. If I paddle right, it will let me accelerate beyond what the throttle slider is set at very quickly, and I can let go to quickly return to the throttle setting. If I paddle Left it does reverse thrust and will act an emergency brake, and even let you go in reverse. This way the throttle slider acts like a "cruise control" on a car. You can set it to a certain speed and use the paddle as gas and brakes. When I want to do a precision landing on a pad I'll get near the landing area, slide the throttle back to zero and just use the paddle for gentle forward / reverse movements.
I'd probably also look into getting some lubricant for the throttle if you want to keep using it. Sadly what ever oil Thrustmaster puts on the stick will likely dry out on you and the sliding action will feel noticeably worse after a few weeks or months.. Look for Nyogel 767A on amazon.. You'll only need the small tube. The difference is night and day. The sliding action will feel like.. pushing through a thick velvet.. You get a smooth moderate resistance for small movements which makes precision much easier, while still being able to easily glide fast with more force. Get your mind out of the gutter.. :p But seriously it's a major upgrade for the throttle.
I ended up trading out the stick for a VKB Space Combat Grip ( Kosmosima ) for a number of reasons ( and I love it ) but If your just getting used to using a flight stick, I will actually suggest keeping the Thrustmaster for a while. It's a good stick, and the only con I had was that all the buttons are mush and are on the base rather than up by your thumb where they're useful. If you ever do upgrade you should be able to convert the TM stick into a lefty if you want to try out dual stick setups.

  • @Sarazoul
    @Sarazoul 4 года назад

Here are my recommendations (heli pilo):
Either go dual joystick: main joystick have both axis set to pitch/roll. Second joystick set yawn and staff left/right.
Or, my personal favourite, go hotas + RTP pedals. Set joystick to pitch/roll, your yawn on the pedals. You can also add straf (either left-right or up-Dow on the pedals. Up-down is common for helicopters. So that's what I use)
If you want the most immersive experience, avoid putting yawn on your main joystick as this is not how real aircraft controls are setup. It should be Pitch/roll on your joystick. And yawn on either your pedals or second joystick.
The reason being that roll+pitch is your main way to make quick turns. Yawn should only be used to "ajust" your aim when you fly joystick.
So when turning (dogfight/race/or even just regular turns). Use roll+pitch. Once you have a target you want to "aim" at (pad or enemy to shoot), then use pitch and yawn to align on the target.
Lastly. Get track IR. And use that special awareness and full immersion.

You 100% need pitch and yaw on the X/Y axis of the joystick, makes it much better for aiming. Z axis (twist) should be your roll. I personally also have pitch inverted, so when I push my left stick forward, I aim up. I've found that to be the easiest for me. It does take a bit of getting used to, when you're in atmo, if you've ever played a normal flight sim.
I'm using 2x Virpil Alpha sticks, left one is for strafing forward/back/left/right, and up/down on the twist. But the T16K is also a great starter joystick, I started with two of those.

Just a hint for flying in atmosphere, yaw(twist) is rarely going to be your friend. You're better off rolling so your head points to where you want to go, then pitching up and letting the craft slowly orient itself properly

I just bought this same setup. Bind the button you have bound to boost for spooling and activating quantum and the two on the back of the throttle, make the left one space brake and the right one boost. Way easier when your dog fighting to have those handy and together. The bottom orange button is just too awkward, thus should be quantum.
By the way once you get used to it it is amazing I absolutely love mine! Had I not just purchased a car I probably would have bought the warthog one!
Before you try flying fast and low, get used to it up high, also having the up/space bar mapped to the rocker switch on the back of the throttle and down/ctrl mapped to the other one really helps. I use it all the time now when I'm getting close to the ground and it helps me prevent crashes like that. I use mostly the down switch for lowering my ship and very little tilt, maybe 15-20 degrees max.
Also, you can bind one of the stick buttons, mine is the one on the top left, to free look and use the Nintendo style directional switch on the back of the throttle to control the free look. Makes it easier when dog fighting to look around.
One last thing be careful when you get in and out of your ship to reset the left pinky throttle control switch because for some reason when you get in and out of the ship or when you go into 3rd person view it seemed to lose track of what bottom and top is. You can fix this by just sliding it all the way to the top and then the bottom again.
Oh and the boost works for the up boosters too so like when you crashed if you had used boost plus up it might have saved you. :-)

WaltzingDingo 'ere. I got the single T.16000M FCS package for the right hand, 'cause my left isn't so great due to RSI injuries of the past. And for my left hand, I got a Coolermaster Controlpad. Super comfortable resting my wrist on it and using it, and each button can be configured to emulate a joystick to a degree. It has an IR sensor on every key that gives it SOME level of analogue input, and it works, but it's only a small amount of movement. Keys are super buttery smooth to press, though. I'm having a lot of fun getting it configured, but I really, really want to get some custom made keycaps for it so I don't have to remember which key is what!

Hey man, you could use a button on the throttle to toogle forwards and backwards for the whole axis, no need for neutral in the middle.
However when in decoupled it would be easier to have it set up the way you do now as you have to manually use reverse to slow down all the time. In coupled it slows down for you by just reducing throttle.

Defiantly twist to roll. Yaw and Pitch to x and y axis. Use the hat switch on the throttle to strafe up,down, forward and back.

Personally I would have adjusted the hotas to mimic the muscle memory I have already built using a keyboard - in that sense the joystick would mimic the ASD and W keys functionality with twisting mimicking the Q and E roll keys - this may well be an more natural translation to what you are used to on a keyboard.
If you try mapping the Hotas to perform more like what you are used to on the keyboard then adaption might be faster and more natural for you. I am not doubting the setup you are using works for the person that advised it, but it might not be the best setup for adapting from a keyboard.
Using the same logic you might want to map the hotas buttons so they replicate the order they are on the keyboard - again this will make it easier to learn.

Cobra, I have used keyboard/mouse, HOTAS and Dual Stick. Currently I and dual stick but thinking of going back to HOTAS now that there is a version available in the T16000m line. Twist to yaw is how you would setup for more of an atmospheric aircraft style of flying, so if you are also in to flight sims, stick with that. If you are only into space sims then twist to roll is the preferred method and might aid in aiming. As for thrust what might help is to set a center detent on the throttle to represent the zero throttle position, if the throttle supports it, I am not sure if the T16000 one does. The other option would be to use a modifier button plus axis for reverse thrust. You may need extra software for this like joy2key to map a button to the left alt key. That will also let you add secondary functions to all stick and throttle buttons and hat switch directions. When I get the HOTAS my plan is to use the throttle axis for forward thrust and to use left alt plus throttle axis as reverse thrust. Then for flight sims that same button mapped to the left alt key can also be used the the thrust reverse toggle for aircraft. Just to keep things consistent.

    1. you kow about HOTAS but have you heard about HOSAM (hands on stick and mouse). it's an alternative to dual stick.
    2. my turning & rolling is revesed so twisting is roll and side-to-side is turn. ultimately you can change the keybinds to whats best for you and it will take sometime to fully adjust to HOTAS but i think you were doing GREAT so far. the only thing i would strongly suggest is be mindful of your ships vector or drift in relation to how fast you're going and the environment you're flying in. not all ships maneuver equally in the new flight model.

Tips: Experiment with swapping roll & turning left and right. This isn't a real airplane. You want to go with what feels right to you.
Rotating is done less frequently than turning left/right in space combat games. Real airplanes rely on the physics of air and ailerons. So I keep rotation/rolling to the twist.
I own a more expensive HOTAS and once I experienced dual sticks I never turned back. You're missing analog controls for strafing up/down and left/right. You can have the best of both worlds by just buying t1600 for $60. Good HOTAS pilots often rely on foot pedals (an additional purchase) to give them the more analog controls they need.
First I just enjoyed flying more (immersion!) but after some practice I actually started to become a better pilot. I can drift like a car around a corner both horizontally and verticaly around things like asteroids keeping my nose inches away from the asteroid. Practice in Arena Commander free flight.
So HOTAS with pedals or dual sticks will give you about the same benefits. Don't be afraid to buy another stick. The t1600 can easily break after a lot of use so the worst case scenario is you now have a spare when (not if) your stick breaks or a stick for Vega. But both methods require hours to get used to.
Having used everything. I feel dual sticks is just better for SC. Less so for games like E:D & flight simulators.
Also as a streamer, experiment using the camera controls and even FPS controls to the analog controls. Instead of just WASD you want analog controls for movement. It allows for cinematic stuff like you've seen from Morphologist and machinema guys. You would NEVER use them for FPS combat but walking around landing zones and to your ship looks smoother and better. Trust me.

I have dual T16000M sticks for my right stick I have it set up the same as you do, I imagine a model of my ship in the middle of the stick and as I move it around I'm moving the nose around. That said a lot of people don't like Yaw on twist, they prefer roll on twist, if that works for your brain change it around. Also there are print outs available for what keybinds you set for each button, I highly suggest that you fill one out and keep it near you for reference, I've been flying with dual stick for about 6 months and I still put it next to me every time I fly. Keep practicing, work on circling something in space, just put your nose on it and fly around it left, right, up, then down. Learn how long it takes you to stop from fast speed, this visual queue will help you know when you will run into something or if you can stop in time. Good luck and I'll see you in the 'verse.

    - 2:00 i set the throttle to forward only , as its flat, its difficult to have the center of it. wich double the throttle distance and then you can be twice as precise on ur speed, and got speed limiter on left little finger throttle wheel .
i use the small pedals behind the throttle to make precision fwd/bcwk for landings or combats.
-stick twisting shows you are one atmospheric model, while others roll with twist, and push left/right for yaw, its called "space flight" model, wich is much better for precision in combats, it took me like 4 hours to stop my brain fcking with me cause of that.
this thing still is a personnal choice, but as u seems disturbed by atmo model, u should try the space one, but just switch roll and yaw axes.
    - at the end u crash cause of decoupled mod, wich doesnt compensate gravity ( fyi ) use straff to compensate when needed.

Man, to turn with a joystick just roll to the side you want to turn, pull the stick to you (as you would do to ascend) and when you reach to where you wanted to turn just roll back horizontally. Use yaw for correction either to a point you want to align (lets say for quantum drive) or landing. Once you learn playing with joystick and throttle (or double joysticks) you won't want to return to mouse/keyboard.

    • @tri99er_

Yeah, it's more realistic, planelike way to fly. Flying without roll feels like controlling rocket docking.
Flying with roll leads to quicker turning for aerodynamic craft, but also can lead to more stalling and losing altitude while performing a knife (sideways flight). Don't know if it's accurately represented in game though, because not aerodynamic crafts (like Aurora) simply would drop down, because of wind friction. They basically would've needed to always fly like helicopter (hovering) in atmosphere.

Change your x axis to roll and your twist to side to side, it more intuitive. There is a finger joystick on the throttle, use this for your strafe, also assign a button on the throttle either ring or pinky forbspace break, this should give you full control. Also i noticed star citizen inverts a lot of the controls so you will have to figure that out as well

Cobra dude you need. To set the yaw axis to the paddles on the front of the throttle. It's way better to aim your guns , the twist a axis on the stick isnt easy to aim with in combat. I also have the boost set to the left button on throttle next to scroll wheel. The button to the right of that I have set to toggle throttle forward and reverse, since this throttle doesn't have a detent in the middle. The mini joy stick on throttle I have set to strafe up down left and right. The orange button on the right side of throttle I have set to quantum. Short press spools and hold to engage. The four way hate above the orange button is set to landing gear hovermode, and countermeasures. The second 4 way hat I have set to shields. Then you have the right way hat above that. I have it set with targeting scanning. This set up is way more fluid in my opinion.

I bought two T16000 with the idea of changing them for better if I got on with the two stick setup. I've not had to change them as they are a much better stick than I expected. I'm using a HOSAS for Elite Dangerous, still haven't bought Star Citizen yet. The second stick feels pretty nice, the throttle on the base of the t16000m works well as cruise control and an active throttle for simple flying. Drop it down to zero and use the stick for dogfighting and landing, though I'm still a novice at fights I think, but doesn't feel too bad.
Definitely takes time to remember keybinds, but it's probably better to leave a lot of it on the keyboard itself if they aren't active stuff like guns and secondary stuff like flares or boost.

As others have said, remember you can rebind things, so if you want roll to be tilting it instead of twisting it, you can do that. Also muscle memory will make you better as you practice. Finally, flying decoupled teaches you best, but its 100% the worse learning curve :)
