Most people don't ever drive their truck offroad. IMO fuel efficiency in a compact truck is most important. If you need a truck for truck things a tiny bed isn't going to get it done.
Yes and no. My father was a farmer and he loved the brumby/brat. It was light, economical , fitted the dogs and a few tools and could go many places WITHOUT tearing the grass up, or making mud, especially in wet weather. For heavier stuff the tractor was used.
@@kellytrelawney8979brumby utes ruled the roost for many years, North American had a dual cab Subaru Ute years ago that lost sales to Hondas Ridgeline, which is still readily available.
with respect... no. im a farmer and we use our giant uparmored f150 for the big stuff, but a lot of times we just need a smaller thingy mover. if im just moving a few crates i dont want 19mpg, i want better.
I said that after I bought a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer. It’s a cheap, and weak transmission. It’s like it has to think all the time, yet gets it all wrong.
I wish Subaru would make the BRAT as there compact truck based on the Forester. The other wish would be the Baja as a mid-sized truck based on the Ascent, and of course bring back the 3.6R and a manual transmission.
Looks like an Outback without the rear roof. No mention of any cylinder deactivation or auto-stop (which is why I first considered a Mazda CX-30 but decided against). But the CVT is a no-go in my book. Even considered an Outback Wilderness, but not going too pay $48k plus tax for something so small. Full size pickups are $50-$70k...no thanks. Guess I'll keep my 1995 4WD Suburban a bit longer. Looking for something new, but prices and what you get for the money are stopping me right now.
I'm waiting for someone to start importing 25 year old Toyota trucks from Europe or Asia like the Ki trucks that come from Japan now. Left hand drive, manual, small trucks without all the junk I don't want or need.
I have a 2006 Baja it has a 4 speed automatic, the only thing that would make it better would be a manual trans. the reason I got this one used is because I never saw any advertisement for it when new, and not many were in the areas I drove around in.
Oh so you want an EV with an on board gas generator. sort of pointless don't you think. Still has that dam lithium battary. no thanks. Now the stout with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel and a manual transmission now that would be worth waiting for. It would be a real truck.
Nope !! I'll stick with my old trusty 94 Chevy K1500 4x4 auto tranny and pert near 100 % reliabilty just normal maintenance and keep on truckin and the old motto is !!! A quart of oil and a gallon of gas let no other car pass !!!
The reason they have declined is they went small on engines. The Forester their suv used to come standard with a V6 which If you live somewhere in hills or mountains you need that power, now they come with a 4 cylinder that fails you when you really need it.
I don't understand the demand to cut the interior short for a useless bed. Wouldn't it be beter to have a wagon with a retractable roof in the back? Anyway, "what could possibly make any Subaru better?" A DCT. I honestly think turbo charged Overlander and Rally versions of the CrossTrek would be awesome. I realize that Subaru probably couldn't make them affordable, though.
Must be: 1. Durable long lasting, like pass down to kids lasting 2. Honestly Good MPG 3. Reasonable Price, low-mid $30,000s 4. Retain Subaru interior comfort for trips 5. Amenities for outdoor lifestyle 🤔Potential to become a MEGA hit for Subaru!
There is a fuel efficiency/power output continuum. The reviewer in this video prioritizes power output. I suspect that the coming generation of mini-truck buyers is leaning more toward the fuel efficiency side of that continuum.
The CVT sucks for off roading and towing. They need to stick with a decent automatic transmission with oversized cooling capacity. They also need to put in a very high torque gear ratio for 1st and 2 nd gear. 3rd on can be more road ready. 1 st needs to be like a crawl ratio that can be locked in like a low range transfer case. 2 nd gear needs to be similar but more for engine breaking while descending a steep hill with a heavy load or a trailer connected.
As a maverick owner, I think this is the only competitor. As for the price of the Santa Cruz, you could go for a Ford ranger, which blows it out of the water. I just think they they are targeting different audiences. The maverick was targeted for the duyers not the off-readers. Is it capable, yes but it has its downfalls too. I do want to see how they will truly compare. I have a 2022 if anyone is curious. It irritated me because everyone compared the compact trucks as equals when they aren't. Ford has enough trucks that the maverick didn't need to cover many areas
Kindly request Subaru Baja cost only $22k so Low Income People and Poor Students can afford to purchase ! Inflation and unemployment is quite high , nobody can afford to buy the car over $30K ! Thank you !
Maverick was popular because it hit the market at under 20k. People want affordable trucks. If the Sub came with gobs of features but priced in the 50k range. "Forget it"
I retired from GM in Late 2008, I find the price hard to believe, We will see, I cant afford a new vehicle, but I could at this price probably 15000 after u add a/c and a radio and a V-8
Naturally aspirated with power, NO CVT, rear wheel drive with transfer case, and at least a foot of ground clearance is what a truck is. The only tech needed is power windows, power locks, ABS, heat, air conditioning and a radio with tactile buttons. Do that and keep the price low and they will sell like hotcakes.
in previous comment failed to state $30, 000 range would be very top trim, need upper $20,000s mid-level for mass sells. Rust proofing a must, problem with many trucks.
Toyota is the King of this segment and Always has been for reasons that have nothing to do with Subaru's gameplan here. Affordability is probably the last reason why this buyer leaves the house. To say that Ford is the king here tells me you really need to to stick with a topic you know more about. Leave the midsize truck market to the boys that have carried it for over 30 years. Thank for trying.
Love my Maverick ICE 2.0 but now Im in the market for a midsize electric. I dont need off road BS, just a practicle onroad towing EV truck, fullsize to big for me. Cheers.
It's a car with the back opened up and will probably be underpowered like most other Subaru's. If it ends up being that it will flop like the the Santa Cruz. It will have to be an actually useful pickup above all other things like tech fluff, i hope they can pull it off.
It gonna avoid engine issues at 100K that other Subaru models have? Ridiculous that so many car companies have design issues known and do nothing to fix issue! A friend just blew a transmission on a GMC truck at 35 K and they’re fighting covering it!! My Ford work truck already needed a alternator at 38K! My friend has sunk 6 G’s on his Subaru engine after issues with engine after 100K!
The Baja was a sales dud - expensive and not useful. What game is it going to change? It was the same with the Brat before it (though I loved those and had one - it was still useless though). CVT - Thats something I just can not stand as a driver. I also looked in on a transmission specialist the other day. 1 manual on the racks with a cracked case. 3 Automatics with various issues. 18 CVTs with all the same issue - overheating causing failure. The story down the road at the next biggest specialist was pretty much similar.
looks interesting but no manual or decent hd auto trans. that stop start crap, gimmicky screen and useless tech addons and especially the cvt make it a never gonna happen
The bed still looks too small to be of much use as a truck. If the bed cannot haul a large couch or 4x8 plywood, well, its not a truck. Its just a poser.
All these new "trucks" are not trucks. They are suv's with a tiny worthless box. We need to classify what a real truck is in that it has to have a standard cab with an 8ft box period. Anything different should have a different name and classification. Cafe standards need to be changed for trucks so they are not forced to meet higher passenger capacity to be profitable for manufacturers to make.
Agreed, unibody, no independent suspension, no solid axel or frame, no leaf packs, CVT trans, belt driven? Yeah not a truck. It's a car with the roof cut off. An open cargo bay doesn't make it a truck...
Agreed. Small cab with atleast a 6'bed. A 3-5' bed is a hatchless hatchback or a suv with open air rear storage. Trucks are carrying stuff, not 3-5 people.

The Honda truck bed is wide enough for drywall or plywood. You can get a longer bed on other trucks. But the width isn’t enough.
Not having a manual transmission would be a deal breaker for me...
I like a manual trans too. getting harder and harder to find. they're a good anti theft feature too, nobody knows how to drive one.
Learn how to drive manual on RUclips and go test yourself test-driving one! Roads would be safer and natural selection would be back on track!
Agreed
It better be a 5 speed. The Brumby/brat was only a 4 speed and that hasted the end.
Enjoy every car being a dealbreaker for you in the future😂🤡
Definitely need to offer a manual transmission.
I will never buy another CVT vehicle, ever.
I said that after I bought a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer. It’s a cheap, and weak transmission. It’s like it has to think all the time, yet gets it all wrong.
2 things they should make it with the stick transmission and they should make a 2 Door version instead of a 4-door
Yes, I would be interested in the two door version .
I would like to see these smaller trucks made with a separate bed on frame instead of a unibody.
I want a small truck with 2 doors and a longer bed. 4 doors is baloney. We need a working truck.
Hear hear!
yes, 2 door , long bed, toyota 1985.....should never have sold it. did it all
...Make mine a 6 speed manual WRX variant and I'll be down at the Subie dealership with insisting they "Shut up and take my money!"...
I wish Subaru would make the BRAT as there compact truck based on the Forester. The other wish would be the Baja as a mid-sized truck based on the Ascent, and of course bring back the 3.6R and a manual transmission.

Buy used, you can get something twice as new as your 95 suburban, for $20k.
It's just models... It's all pending optionnal choices still to be made... Their testing their stupidity if they can get along... Deceiving!
I'm waiting for someone to start importing 25 year old Toyota trucks from Europe or Asia like the Ki trucks that come from Japan now. Left hand drive, manual, small trucks without all the junk I don't want or need.
Or when Toyota is going to start selling that new truck/camper design. If I remember right it can't be sold in the states because of emissions

I like to see something like a BRAT King Cab with a respectable truck bed. Put in the rear bucket seats to get around the chicken tax.
At $25K I would consider it, but not if the dealers real world price it at $48K. I'm about 3 years away from being in the market for one.
Dose that mean in 3 years your Toyota will be 30 years old or have 300,000 miles on it? Or do you own something other than a Toyota?😄
I'm in
Rumor is the base price will be around $30K with a premium version around $35,000 on the '25 Baja.
Manual transmission, and winch mount points, front and rear
I'm waiting on the Toyota Stout plug-in hybrid pickup, arriving in 2025 for $25-30K with that brand's reliability -- but will check this out.
I seriously doubt that a Toyota plug-in hybrid pickup will sell for 30K or less.
Oh so you want an EV with an on board gas generator. sort of pointless don't you think. Still has that dam lithium battary. no thanks. Now the stout with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel and a manual transmission now that would be worth waiting for. It would be a real truck.
I drive a forester with manual transmission and am looking for a pick up with 6 foot bed and rear bench seat.
I want a Brat. Two door extra cab, 2.5L, six speed, AWD.
NO CVT, THEY ARE JUNK!
dont want another quasi truck with a lunchbox bed...make it a useable 6 ft bed option at the very least
Nope !! I'll stick with my old trusty 94 Chevy K1500 4x4 auto tranny and pert near 100 % reliabilty just normal maintenance and keep on truckin and the old motto is !!! A quart of oil and a gallon of gas let no other car pass !!!

Technically it's an H6. The v in v6 means it's a... V. But even the 6 cylinders are boxers.
hoping this comes back. loved our old Baja. don't care about the manuel, but a wilderness oh yeah!
They need to drop the 2.5. Go back to the 2.2 and the2.0 FA with a manual transmission plus the 60 / 40 split like the older WRX.

Does the Subaru offer a manual transmission, full size spare and a cabin with fold down back seats for extended cargo capacity?
This acts like the Baja is new and unique. The Baja started in 2003 and was an updated version of the infamous BRAT from Subaru in the 70s and 80s.
Kindly request Subaru Baja cost only $22k so Low Income People and Poor Students can afford to purchase ! Inflation and unemployment is quite high , nobody can afford to buy the car over $30K ! Thank you !

Oh hey, that's my Overland Baja (the matte green one)
The Baja race takes place in Baja California Mexico, not California US, just say’n.
We know 90% of the time we need mileage was looking for a better hybrid, I believe this rugged car is a mistake, $$$ 😔😔😔
The world needs a Baja STI.
They should make it diesel and release it in the US.
my impreza hatch is unfortunately a cvt, i will not buy another vehicle with one. doesnt need to be a manual but no more cvt

A hybrid fuel efficiency truck that has a regular bed size. Toyota.?

X-mode is for going down hills. Other than that, just drive it.
It is too small and it will be too expensive!
Baja comes from Baja California south of the border

Manual? A step backwards when dual-clutch is a perfectly viable modern solution.
The bed still looks too small to be of much use as a truck. If the bed cannot haul a large couch or 4x8 plywood, well, its not a truck. Its just a poser.
I like the white looking model of the baja
I was excited, but CVT ruins it for me.

What Subaru can do to satisfy many 🎉 give us a Low and High range transmission 😮
Love my 1985 subaru brat!
I LOVE THE OLD ONE, THE NEW ONE I WILL SEE
It’s not Subaru that nixed the manual trans. It’s the Subaru customers. They stopped purchasing manuals. Videos and posts complaining about not having the trans doesn’t make sales. Without ACTUAL SALES the manual will never be seen again.
Build it and I’ll buy it! Let us really know when it will be available!
Toyota Stout seems much better if you can wait!
I’m in if they sold them in Australia, I will buy one straight away😊
Give me a Subaru CVT over a manual any day. Does the new Subaru Small Truck gave a spare wheel?
Ho spare wheel, no deal.
Make it a 3 door w/6 speed manual
If Subaru is really serious about bringing a true truck to the market they should simply rebadge their Isuzu D Max including the diesel option
I love my Subaru but they seriously need less weirdness and more sportiness.
The electric and Hybrid tech will get a punch forward with this i think. Gas is limited, they are using deadly chemicals now to squeeze it out of the ground. Hybrid and EV tech needs to be used and improved to we are ready in a few years when gas is gone. If the cell phone was never used it would still be a voice and fax only (fax if you stopped car and waited hour to send) 5-10 min of time on a world tour suitcase sized battery.
Two doors! Two doors! We want two doors!
Looks to me like it has almost no clearance.
Loved Subaru always!
only honda and toyota have cvt's that work. the rest are in development for yrs. 25k for base model of baja? chevy has a 8k pu. toyota a 10k one coming. ford is talking 8k too. i hope subaru can make a brat for 8k. i hope
Would not consider the Subaru with the CVT, management use your heads competition is strong and getting stronger
My girlfriends Subaru wagon has a CVT - it's dreadful.
I'd buy a Baja in second.

This is speculation and hype Subaru ain't doing diddly squat
Did I not just hear that Toyota bought Subaru?
4 door crew cab and I'm out.
I won't buy a truck with a 4 cylinder engine.
Ok SO WHERE IS IT????
Does it have a chassis?
The Mav doesn't.
Does it have rear drive so it can haul haul a gross load up a steep slick hill?
The Mav doesnt and cannot.
24k is waay too much.
23k is waay too much.
Give us a basic 2.4 four-banger with a large bed. I dont care about 4WD, back seat, alloy wheels or power windows.
Simple has been done before.
Oh, and I want to be able to fix it with my Leatherman.
Subaru Brat 2.0? :D
No Hybrid!!!
Won’t buy a CVT
