I don't understand people who are trashing talking people who sing songs from other cultures. It is good people from different cultures are singing Nada Sou Sou: it reflects the beauty of the song and its universal appeal. Then again, purists, racists and ultra-nationalists fail to see that.
I am Okinawan, born in U.S.A., and love Hayley Westenra's singing. No apologies and compromise needed. This is one of my favorites, just the way it is. It's a beautiful song, beautifully sung.

Hayley looks stunning in that beautiful coloured dress at the world games... and as always, sounds amazing, such a unique voice. There is a studio version of Nada Sousou on : Hayley sings Japanese Songs UCCL-9058
She sang the outro in Japanese, which was a nice touch. I couldn't make out the English lyrics, but her voice is similar to Natsukawa's. I wonder if the English version captured the same emotions and the meaning of the original song?

While watching the news broadcast of the 26th G8 summit held in Okinawa, Rimi Natsukawa saw the performance of Okinawan folk band called Begin singing Nada Sōsō and could not get it out of her head. She then asked the band if she could cover the song backstage at a Begin concert. It was not until March 2001 that Rimi released this song as her 3rd single album. I first heard this song being performed by locals at a festival in Nago, Okinawa in 1999 while I was stationed there at Torii Station From Feb 1999 to April 2002.
