- John Mellencamp performs "Small Town" at Farm Aid III held on September 19, 1987 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid in 1985 and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. Farm Aid III was held in Lincoln, Nebraska at Memorial Stadium. Artists including Emmylou Harris, Steppenwolf, Vince Gill, Lyle Lovett, John Denver, Lou Reed, Joe Walsh, and many more performed.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

In the 80's I drove semi, hauling Ford production parts. In Indiana the radio was all John. When in Detroit and Michigan the radio was Bob Seger, Northern IN and Southern MI it was both......man that was the best of times!
Bless you Richard. I think this America was lost with the cell phones. And I’m on mine all day too so I’m no better than the society I blame for the loss of Real America.
@Richard Koch - you won the Seger-Mellencamp exacta. I'm still playing their songs.
Im from Northern IN, and I’ll be happy to say that the stations around here still play both! And man am I thankful they do
@@jacobmalik4056 Jacob.....you're a lucky man indeed!
@@diosantana2659 I have a cell phone also....haven't had it on in two months. Don't miss the invasion of privacy at all! Stopped listening to network news also. Life is better!
Who's out there just chilling in a small Town 😊😊😊
@user-xb2xy5nh8x the comments guidelines say be respectful so I can’t say what really happens in the small towns 🙄
Hello from Indpls👋😁
Big time philanthropist. People can go ahead and put some respect on John Mellencamp.
This was one of my husband's favorite songs he was born in a small town and he was a farmer he has been gone for 2 years 6 months in John mellencamp was one of his favorite singers I play the song at his funeral I find myself listening to all of my husband's favorite songs I can still see my husband today singing your song and dancing God be with all of us
Amazing he is, I went into a small biker bar and a band was playing, the lead singer was amazing, I just went crazy, my date drug me out before I could finish my drink, then later I discovered that it was John Mellencamp.,
Wow
I was there in the middle of the crowd on the field with my girlfriend...Miss those times and a great cause to help farmers.
Real music. Real life. And back when life was normal. Send me back in time.
Thank you farmers for feeding America and the world 💗

You can tell how happy he is to sing to his people. Beautiful moment!
His "people" in Los Angeles?
THE ONLY song about Small Town that I'll listen to! Thank you John!!
Hal Ketchum “Small Town Saturday Night” ?
Wait! Wait! Wait!
You've never heard "Small Town Girl" by Steve Wariner? It's a classic, too.
who is outthere in 2020 watching john sing this great song in a small town ?????
The 80's what a decade. It seemed like the decade the entire world started coming together.
He sounds the same live as he does in his in recording studio...No lip syncing... That's pure raw talent.
Hello how are you doing, hope you are having a wonderful and blessed day?
@@charlieandrin1370 ciao Charlie! 🙋♀️😍😘💘💕
Pure raw talent? Seriously? It's super common.
I agree. But he couldn't dance worth of sh*t. Lol
An amazing transformation as an artist and human being though his songs suggest as much.
There is a lot of talent on that stage. To bad you don't see that today.
whatever he's taking i want. that's some energy he's bringing.
Anyone who calls Mr, Mellancamp A One Hit Wonder is nothing short of delusional. John's songs have remained in the foreground of Rock n Roll for the last four decades. His career started on a shaky premise that he despised. As soon as he fulfilled his contractual obligations to those who told him he needed to incorporate dance Routines and to wear tight shirts; he changed back to himself and gave us songs that reflected brightly on a way of life that is cherished across generations. His songs speak of a deeply felt understanding of how the world shapes us and the collective wisdom he imparts in these wonderful stirring axioms that remind us that we all face life on our own merits. He brings us a comfort of words and a healing of music. He is undoubtedly an American icon and a truly gifted musician. One of the best singer song writers we have ever seen and a gift to the people who hear his voice.
John and the band at the height of their musical powers!
John Mellencamp is a 100% Heartland Rocker and has consistently produced some of the world's greatest and most imaginative music - would just love to see him live!! Just LOVE this fantastic atmospheric and unpretentious performance!! Keep on rockin' John!!
Back in the 80's,this song spoke of dreams , inspiration and aspiration and up to this 2019...still gives me butterflies and goosebumps...where have real musicians gone.........
John is a legend. An icon. Pure and simple!
Yes he is!!! HAND TO HOLD ONTO is the most underrated song ever!!!
Yes indeed.
Just seen the Cougar in fort Wayne indiana may 15th 2023! He was amazing, he talked to the crowd so much! I was born in a small town in indiana like John!
Love cherry bomb and peaceful world ❤..this man connects with my soul through music 😊
I'm 70 and this performance just rocks me
They were definitely having the best times of their lives
life goes on.....long....after the thrill of livin' is gone.
Great performance, great band! John has always had the dancing groove and I just love him and his music! Love the long locks of wavy hair!! ❤️
Took my daughter to Bloomington to see a “Little 500 Concert” she was 10 at the time. Got to see the show from the side of the stage. We flew in from NY. Met Kenny☺️. 1992.
Still totally off the hook ! No candy coated bullshit , just real music that means a lot, to a lot of people.
10-4
Yes sir 👌
He is true and down to heart. We need more like him. The country needs to come back togeather. God bless you John Mellencamp for down to earth songs that tell life stories.
Love his music...beautiful hair and super pleasing to the eye during this era.
I think of my home town of Longmeadow Massachusetts when I hear this song. It's a great town to grow up in. It is PURE HEAVEN! 🙏☮️✌️
Where have all the long haired dancin' men gone??? Lord, for my youth again...
Probly died in a sh*thole;
That's probly where they buried them.
They went bald. lol
They became women...
@@ronaldnanni298 🤣😂
I know what you mean! My husband use to have his hair about this same length and when he decided to go short because it was easier to maintain, I was so upset! I still MISS it so.
I’ve seen him twice in Toronto - exhilarating
What a great song ! I'm from a small town.
Had a friend back in high school looked just like him

John Mellencamp - Small Town ( Live Aid 1987 )
I use to live in a small town , But i believe the
rest of city followed me .LOL
still at it in july 2020 pandemic, born. live and die in that small town!....that is whre they probably bury me!......folk-hero mellencamp!
Always kicks musical ass everywhere he performs. Music from the heart, something that doesn't exist today. Noticed in the end, he was short of breathe from all that dancing around. Heavy smoking taking its toll even back then. God bless him and his music.
Love it, John is pouring his heart out 👍❣
Oh, what you've done to your voice with all that smoking. It's good to come back to these oldies and see the true happiness you now lack on stage. Thanks for giving me front row seats and all the wonderful memories.
Mellencamp is one hell of a musician.
+FoMoCo1 And songwriter!!! And painter!!! And an all-round fantastic humanitarian!!!
One of the greats.
He's a singer not a musician.
John is one of them Who is very talented and never sang a bad song just like bob seger & Peter Frampton & Tom petty
I'm from NW Indiana and John was from Seymour, IN, a small town and more rural. But as a Hoosier who graduated from IU, I'm proud of our 2 most famous citizens: John Mellencamp and Bob Knight, Lol...............
He had so much fun, back in the day. Warms my heart to watch these old ones
This was Johns peak, great songs and the best band he ever had..
Yes, and his recent material with Bruce Springsteen is also peak.
I have been listening to John cougar - Mellenkamp since 1974
You'd think you'd know how to spell his name given that i'ts been 47 years since you started listening to him..
Hello mary how are you doing!!
Memories of the 80s they were a blast
That's one glorious mullet!!!!!!!!
You bet
Every time I listen to this song it reminds me of that same small town that I grew up. It's like he made a song about all of us.
Jesus, one of the best live from Mellencamp!

Great song! And Kenny Aronoff!!! THE best friggin drummer in this world!!!!!
I was born in a small town. And a lil bit of small town. Brought it down in the small town
Best Small Town song!
This video started auto playing when I was trying to show something else to my 78 yr old mama and the first thing she said is what beautiful hair he has. Lol! I'd have to agree with her. 😊
Hello Dixie how are you doing!!
I was at the first farm aid in Champaign Illinois. Incredible list of performers. Twelve hour concert, rained for the first half. Great memories !
This version has a country spin on it. He did a great job performing it.
These were the days when his shows were amazing. Used to see him every time in town, and was cool to see the house lights all on for the encore and 15,000 people up dancing. Good times, man.
His music sticks with you. The hair, he tucked-in t-shirt....pure gold.
That's because he is THAT GOOD!!! Helluva songwriter!!! Helluva catalog!
Omg ! I was so “in love” with him ! 🥰😆, but still love his music !
Hello Cindy how are you doing!!

Luv this song John is a legend but will always be a small town boy at heart. He more than obviously loves where he is from & knows the people will always have his back & truly love him there. I luv John’s hair in this video!! ❤️🥰🇺🇸
Some towns disappear they get so small.
Live rock & roll doesn't get a whole lot better than this...
Great singer and performer.
OMGolly jumpin' Jesus! Look at how adorable you are! That hair!!! Full of vim and vigor! 87 was a good year!

Hello Joanna how are you doing!!
I live in St Louis Missouri. The year is 2023 and John Mellencamp is in town tonight and tomorrow night for two concerts. I wish that I could be there to see him live in one of those two.
Good American music!!
The best !! ..... Thanks John .
Too many memories.....amazing songs.
Beautiful
Just the amount of passion makes my day. God bless the Midwest !!!
A one hit wonder? "I Need A Lover", "Ain't Even Done With the Night", "Hurts So Good", "Jack and Diane", "Hand To Hold On To", "Crumblin' Down", "Pink Houses", "Authority Song", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town", "ROCK in the USA", "Rain on the Scarecrow", "Rumbleseat", "Paper In Fire", "Cherry Bomb", and "Check It Out" all made the top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. He's not even close to a "one hit wonder!" He's got plenty more hits, buy his "Words and Music: Greatest Hits." Great CD.
Brett Daniel , yeah he’s not going to be anything . LOL
Who called him a one hit wonder?
One hit wonder my ass
Hows about I hit you and you can wonder how you ended up on the floor.
Brett Daniel you forgot hotdogs and hamburgers
Love ❤ his big smile at ending!
Tough to find music today with heart and soul poured into it like this .
Why couldn’t he stay this beautiful?!
😂👍
Loved John good solid performer and singer with ageless voice. His band always cooked with the great Kenny Aronoff steering the ship on the drums 😎🤘
Now this is American music. 🇺🇸
A great American Rocker and the fiddle player, Lisa Germano is pretty damn cute!
Cant get mark geminos sounds up on this web site never mind his daughter
Lisa IS more than pretty damn cute
Makes me sad thinking about my small town. Such an amazing time of my life!!
Insteadve been sad you can just honor the blessing of the memories by enjoying.
And be glad we were raised in a small town. There is nothing like it.
Same here, but my small town is slowly dying 😥
Funny thing John said in an interview, "my kids can't stand when I dance, they think I'm so bad." lol, He's darn cute though!!
Your lucky my dad was a nasty little man your dad got something to dance for
Dancing with that guitar! Amazing talent
Many times took granddaughters to his concerts!!! Memories!! To see them clap, laugh and sing along!! Worth millions to me!!!!
I forgot John Mellencamp used to borrow Jon Bon Jovi's wig. He looks as cool as the song. 1987 was a great year. I was 21 and having fun
I had forgotten that John had let his hair grow long for a bit. Looks good on him. I love how thw crowd was so with them on this song. And the fiddle player is hot hot hot! Nothing like a small town... And that's prolly where they'll bury me too
Much love from a small Town here in Mississippi 😊😊😊
I think John's succes stands on the honesty of his music
Even if I speak Japanese, his songs remind of my hometown through his songs.
furusato looks like this song.
That's cool. I love the song Sukiyaki. I never knew the words to it but as a little girl i would ask my mom to play it til i fell asleep so she would reset the needle on the record...as an adult i learned what the japanese lyrics were an still love it the same.
@John Mellencamp Thanks! John. Take care!
John Mellencamp, and Bob Seger are normal small town boy's... They are so laid back, no frill's no big production's, just jean's, t- shirts, tennis shoes!!!!!!!! They are both great singer's, and storyteller's!!!! From the Motor City, where we know our music!!!! 🎶🎶🎶!!!!
Love it when rockers sound this great live! Journey in Houston 1981' queen live aid in 1985
queen is bad
🥰favorite song , love them all this is my favorite, speaks the truth , god bless small towns ! 🙏🏻
I have been many concerts and I can honestly say that The Lonesome Jubilee tour was the absolute best I've been to! The way John Mellancamp connected with the audience was unbelievable!
