    Been keeping Assasin Snails for years in my tanks, never seen them attack any living shrimp or suffered strange losses within tanks stocked with Assasins. They only eat dead shrimp, dead fish, but most random was to find one eating a dead houselfy; which somehow managed to get under the aquarium hood, then drowned and sunk...

    Maybe the assassin snails were eating the weak shrimp so that's why the colony was the best

    Exactly! Agree with you. I recently put 2 Assassin's snails inside my shrimp only tank. A few days later, I had a hollowed out shrimp with water fully inside. Tried querying about this in a few forums and didn't get any response. A week later noted another shrimp dead. This time noted that the shrimp was stuck to a goo or mucus like substance. I remember seeing this on the foot of the snails. Promptly removed the snails for good.
    So it is a myth that Assassin's snail cant catch a shrimp. It can do so if it wanted to - using its goo.

    They ate those shrimp because the shrimp were theirs... see?
    I eat my shrimp too. If it were my wife's shrimp, oh boy, I'd be in trouble... so I won't eat those.

    If you want to prevent this aggression between shrimps, I witness it too in my CRS tanks, try to crush your food. Do it with a spoon or something, and place the food on an oak leaf or something if you have a soil so it doesnt sink into your bottom. This really helps. Food for babies needs to be dust, I do it 2/3x a day and it really helps. I have had like 300 shrimp now from 5 CRS females within 3 months... All have grown up nicely and are nearly adult.

      There's a couple videos on this channel about Bacter AE, that stuff is pretty awesome, my shrimp all love it and it's a fine white powder that's supposedly dried up biofilm, when you put it in the water it clouds it up with dust sized particles and the shrimp literally don't even have to move, they just catch it as it drifts through the water or as it lands at their feet. This food in particular has been impressive to me because I haven't seen a single shrimp on shrimp aggression since I got the food. It's expensive, 25-30 us dollars depending on where and when you get it, but a 70 gram jar will do ~140 spoon full feedings, although unless you've got more than 50 shrimp you really only need half a spoonful, so you can get 250 or so days out of $30 worth of it, so for me it's worth it.

      @@josevargas2345 They have no chance to catch a healthy, living shrimp. They don't have paralyzing venom or any other instrument to keep the shrimp from escaping and get through their chitin shell. If you know how they actually kill snails, you understand that they are no danger to active animals like shrimp or fish. They do eat dead or dying shrimp, which actually is a good thing.

    RCS and assassin go along just fine. Assassin snails are widely misunderstood they only eat what is dead or dying and of course other live snails.. My snails don't attack my RCS ...this is a fact I had 8 shrimp and three died due to water parameters I added snails after that and I have not seen a dead shrimp since then. The hollow skin which he discussed is actually exoskeleton which shrimps keep on removing from time to time and yes assassin snails will eat those exoskeletons

    Hell yes Assassins eat shrimp :-(
    I introduced 11 assassins into my community tank after it got overrun with hundreds and hundreds of pest snails. I had a very healthy population of breeding Rili shrimp in the tank as well and they were constantly breeding. At any one time there were 3/4 different sizes of young shrimp in the tank. Same as you, I found one or two empty shrimp carcasses and did think about the assassins but brushed it off. Unfortunately I couldn't move the shrimp into my other tanks just as a precaution as they have fish in them that will definitely eat them.
    Long story short-they absolutely annihilated the pest snails, my tank was littered with many hundreds of tiny empty shells within a cpl of months. They have also completely destroyed every single shrimp in my tank!! There's lots of baby assassins of various sizes as well. Absolutely gutted as my shrimp were breeding so well! :-(

    In my 55 gallon I had a huge breeding colony of RCS. Farther along the road I had a very large bladder snail explosion so I got 3 assassin snails. The assassin snails laid eggs and there were over a hundred of them. After a short amount of time all of the bladder snails were dead and the assassins needed some food, so they started going for the shrimp. There were lots of plants that the snails had trouble navigating, so they struggled to get the shrimp and almost all of the snails died. I actually ended up making some necklaces with the shells of the dead snails. Even after all of that my shrimp are doing better than ever.

    I had about 15-20 ghost shrimp. Had 4 assassin snails. Or I thought I did. Turned out to be around 10. I put in feeder snails for the assassins. I figured it would be enough to keep them going for a while. Also had some mystery snails. My assassins cleared out all of the feeders(ramshorn), three mystery snails, then my ghost shrimp started disappearing. Yeah, they'll eat shrimp. I've been told it's rare. Apparently I got the aggressive gene pool in my tank.

    My neo's are housed with my cardinia's and they fight over food and neo's always win. I have a suspicion that neo's can kill cardina's. I kept finding dead cardinia's right after feeding. So, now I give them food in several area's of the tank at once and also sprinkle some baby food in. Ever since I've done that, the fighting has cut right down and no dead cardina's. It was funny because I was blaming the endlers at first and were going to move them out, but it wasn't them at all and when I saw how powerful the fights got between the two species, it clicked that must be it and it was. The endlers stay at the top of the tank and eat flake food, they don't even bother with their own babies.

    With Amano Shrimp once the mothers eggs hatch the mother doesn't actively seek out her young and eat them. The mother will eat them if they stay to close and she picks up as nearby food. So I would say Shrimp end up eating their young by accident.

    I've only had shrimp for 11 days now. I got a neocaridina mix of about 80 shrimp, and some came berried. On day 8, I noticed the first babies. The next day, I had just fed and was enjoying watching them eat. A large one comes along on a leaf and picks up a baby, and it looks like it's rolling it around near its mouth. Having read that neos don't eat the babies unless they're really starving, I keep watching, expecting the little one to appear somewhere close by. I never saw it again. With all those legs moving, it was hard to make out the details of what was happening. So while I'm not completely sure it was eaten, it sure looked like that's what happened.

    • @heatherwanderer777

      guess it depends on if he bought the anubias from someone, and it might have been contaminated, or if he had it in another of his own nonshrimp tanks and he was using non shrimp safe ferts on it in the other tank. Lots of ways that it could have happened that had nothing to do with the plant cuttings themselves. But thanks for sharing cause I'd never heard about the Anubias myth til today.

    I've got two assassin snails in a tank with that's got a few cherry shrimp and some CRS, it's heavily planted and there's also some endler fry in the tank so I feed it pretty heavily, that being said there's PLENTY of food to keep a big colony of snails...
    I bought the assassin snails specifically to keep the population under check, but they are LAZY! They eat maybe two snails a week each, I've had them for about 4 months now, and to be honest if they went rogue and started killing everything in the tank I might root for them lol, they just seem so easy going and lathargic. The only time I've ever even caught them eating was when I first got them and I introduced them to the tank, they'd been in transit a couple of days and they were hungry enough that they hunted down a snail right away. Wasn't hard... the snails wanted to see who the new guys were, so it was pretty much home delivery.

    I bought some moss idk if it's java moss but I put it in a small tank and added some poison for worms that basically can also kill snails...
    Why? Well there are basically assassin snail eggs on it and I don't want to lose my other snails because of that pest.
    That's right I think the assassin snail is a pest cause it kills every other snail even the rabbit snails that are barely breeding.
    I hope the poison can finish off the eggs so I can put the moss in the tank for my shrimp and guppies to breed in.

    I love all the comments here of dudes with a 20 gallon aquarium telling this guy that he is wrong about assassin snails right after he mentions he has 100 shrimp tanks and 30 assassin tanks.

    I kept an assassin snail up until today when I walked in on it eating one of my new chocolate shrimp! I couldn't believe it but there had been mystery disappearances. Won't be keeping them with shrimp anymore thats for sure.

    How do snails catch the shrimp when the shrimp are so much faster!?

    You should start a big breeding colony of Amazon river prawns. They are spectacular, but not common.

    I apologize, I'm a little confused. You said to keep them between 70.and 72, then in the next sentence you said to keep them from 72- 74. So should I keep them at tje happy medium which is 72? Thanks! Oh, and I cut my anubias all the time in my shrimp tank and they are fine too. 😊

    Hi Rob i get a lot of trouble with high nitrates what ca changesn i do to reduce this without water ?

    • @jamiem5364
      @jamiem5364 4 года назад

      @@LupDiesel That is extremely bad advice. A fully cycled tank will always have nitrates!
      Ammonia is converted to nitrite, which is then converted to nitrate. you do water changes or add alot of plants etc to help lower the nitrate level.

    pretty sure if you spread the food around there's less chance of them getting eaten, i also think the shrimp can't even see what they're eating since they're on the ground and their eyesight isn't that great, just taste i guess?

    • @LupDiesel
      @LupDiesel  2 года назад

      I can see it for sure. They don't have the best vision it seems but using powdered food definitely helps if done right. Too much and it can quickly foul the water.
