Excellent profile my friend. They would love my hard water and all my pond snails to eat. Bumble bee snails lol. Lol I don't wanna say anything about them eating each other while copulation is going on... Excellent video my friend and thanks again for your stickers and kindness.
A few months ago I got 2 to take care of a pest snail problem. I now have 2 adults 3 juveniles and 2 eggs. I actually plan to move them from my 10 gallon in a few months and put them in my 15 gallon which also has a huge amount of pest snails as I over feed my guppies (making sure fry eat). Absolutely love these snails
I know right? They're too good. Even when they breed it's nowhere to the numbers pest snails do and when they do you can pass them onto friends or simply just enjoy them. Glad you are having fun with them.
@@DanielKeepingFish I have 3 tanks that could all love assassin snails eventually. I currently have a mystery snail in my 20 gallon but by the time I have that many assassins the mystery snail will be long gone
I bought 3 Assassin snails as I had a severe Malaysian Trumpet Snail problem. They didn't control it. They committed Genocide. They also bred well. They do eat a bit of algae. They also swarm algae biscuits when I put them in. I don't remove dead fish. They eat every bit of platty sized fish in a half a day. They live fine alongside my Nerites. They are beautiful and provide lots of entertainment.
@Daniel Keeping Fish I also had ramshorn snails at the same time as the MTS. The assasins wiped them out first. Then went on to the MTS. I ended up with like 30 assassins. One of my favourite attacks I saw was when an assassin chased a large MTS up the glass. He got on it. Pulled it from glass and they both fell to bottom where other assasins were. And they mobbed it. I now have zero snails apart from Nerites and assasins. The assasins still breed. But not in the numbers they did before. Great vid by the way. I know how patient you must have been to get some of those shots.
@graham biggs haha.. sounds like something out of a snail zombie horror movie. Thank you for the compliment. I tend to spend a lot of time in front of my tanks so not so much a chore when it's a passion hey.
Not “Genocide” hahaha! Great comment and very helpful as I didn’t know Nerite snails can live peacefully alongside assassins and today my 3 will arrive. Last night I frantically removed all my Nerites from my tank that’s over run with pest snails (due to my over feeding. Lol) and placed them in other tanks so the assassin snails wouldn’t Order 66 them. Lol THANKS!
great species profile daniel,4 months later, just now seeing this! i do like the assasins, i have some tiny babies just come up out of the sand! 1 year 4v about 500 malaysian trumpet snails, and they are almost entirely gone. i had my doubts they would have done this good of a job, but good to theyre name, they have. thanks so much enjoyed this mate🙂👍
awesome video. I think its important to see how it can eat other snails, especially if you plan on getting an assassin snail for a tank you have other snails in
Thanks Scott. I went as far as I thought I should with it. Hope it provided enough of an idea of their behaviour without upsetting anyone who may be sensitive to the more brutal aspects of natural behaviour.
Have a snail pest issue in my 100 litre tank (plants bought from local fish shop) think after watching this going to get me some Jason Bourne's to sort it out... Thanks once again..subscribed
Jason Bournes haha... They'll help for sure. You could drop a slice of corgette or a lettuce leaf in for an hour or so and when the snails climb on it lift the vegetable out with loads of them on then let the Assains mop up the rest. Just don't leave the corgette in too long, it'll start breaking down after a few hours and foul up your water.
@@DanielKeepingFish now that's a great idea...plus anything that likes eating courgette in any form is in league with the devil.. 👍 thank you for the tip!
I just bought two sails for my tank, which is overrun with Malaysian Trumpet Snails. They're cute, and look like little elephants with hats when they're all the way out and roaming on top of the substrate. Watching them eat is insane, too. I just happened to catch "Brain" eating a small one last night, but "Pinky" has just been hanging on the glass just 'Narf'in.
I have a ridiculous amount of bladder snails. However there’s also small live bearers, and shrimp in the tank. Would you recommend assassin snails for this tank? I love watching the shrimp (neocardanias) they’re so peaceful so I don’t want to put them in danger but again too many bladder snails. I thought they were cute at first. Have a ton of live exotic plants in the tank (assuming that’s where they come from) but before I realized it it looks really ugly with them there.
@nakenyaliven9095 yes totally! Some people say they eat Cheery shrimp but I've kept them together for years and I don't think it's a problem. They will eat dead ones, possibly sick and dying ones but not live healthy shrimp. The Cherries are too quick for the Assassins for one thing. I've even got video of Cherry shrimp riding around on top of Assassins very unconcerned. They will definitely help to control your bladder snails and of course they won't damage your plants. The other thing you can do is add some veggies like a slice of blanched corgette/zucchini to your tank for a couple of hours. Loads of Bladder snails should climb on it to feed so you can pull out lots of them in one go. Do this a few times and you can make a big dent in the Bladder snail numbers then let the Assassins mop up the rest. Just don't leave the vegetable in your tank too long. If you leave it in over night for example it could start breaking down and make a mess of your water.
No. Cories are too smart, too agile and too quick for that to happen. They will feast on a dead fish but generally don't have the ability to hunt them. I say generally because I did have an Apistogramma that tried to eat one once and the Assasin tried to eat him right back haha.. I ended up having to remove it from the fish's mouth. By the way it would take them a while to make a dent in a large snail population. You might consider dropping a piece of vegetable like corgette into your tank and removing numbers of snails when they climb on to eat. You might need to do that several times to reduce the number of snails then use Assasins to mop up the stragglers.
@@hydroguy6927 no worries at all. Just don't leave the vegetable in the water too long. If you left it over night for example it will break down and effect your water. Doesn't take long for loads of them to climb on though you'll be able to remove plenty that way. Might need to repeat it a few times to make a dent in the population then let the Assasins do the rest. Good luck with it.
I worry about parasites and sicknesses being spread into my big tank. How long should I quarantine and should I medicate to be safe or is there a way to tell if it's sick?
I've recently bought 2 assassins and boi they was fascinating watching them take down tge bladder snails that had infested my tank🙈😜I love watching them🥰
Have these in my shrimp tank as a few bladder snails came in on the plants I bought. They sorted the issue out. Got loaches in my community tank. But I love the assassins. I'm buying more for my Congo tetra tank
They're expert predators. I ended up having to keep a separate culture of snail to maintain a food source for them when they wiped out all the snails in their tank. Can always keep frozen blood worm handy to feed them too as long as that's okay for other tank mates too.
I've had three active healthy 'Assassin' snails for about three months in a dirted 20 gallon tank full of pond snails. My 'Assassin's' have chose a life of peace. Pond snails that are 1/4 to 1/3 smaller than my Assassin's will routinely pick up the Assassin's snail trail, follow the Assassin's, catch up, then munch the Assassin's foot, causing the Assassin's foot to shrink up. Then the pond snails will travel around the side, up to the head of the Assassin, & take off in a different direction. More often, the pond snails catch up to my Assassin's, munch the foot of the Assassin, then crawl up & over my Assassin's before heading off in a different direction. I've never witnessed any empty pond snail shells & never witnessed anything other than pond snails harassing my 'Assassin's'. Not sure if anyone else has had this experience. I really love the look of my Peace Loving Assassin's, so I hope one day they'll reproduce.
I had a right problem with black trumpet snails so i put 7 assassin snail in ( witch i called the magnificent 7 after the film 😂) and within 6 mths all the trumpet snails had gone 🎉
These snails are pretty cool, I have 2 in my 10 gallon betta tank that is loaded with live plants that ended up getting tiny pest snails. It's pretty cool watching them eat them.
Are you buying them as adults? Maybe they've well into their life cycle when you're getting them. Surprised they aren't breeding for you though and providing you with further generations.
Good video very interesting. I don’t find any snail a pest to fair. I have a fast moving snail in one of my tanks it’s small with a Brown and yellow shell. I have no clue what it is maybe some type of pond snail. But it seems harmless.
I think they do eat live healthy shrimp but very very rare. I think a I’ve seen a video from flop aquatics which documents this. But again very very rare
Always exceptions to the rules I guess. I have to wonder in cases like this if there is something effecting the shrimp making them particularly susceptible to attack or something making the snails particularly aggressive but maybe not. Maybe they just do it on rare occasions as you say.
had a huge infestation of like 100+ bladder snails put three of these guys, after 2 months they're all gone not sure if they'll starve now, as there's only some worms and things on the bottom haha
I just got my first 2 assassins yesterday. I wasnt expecting assassin boat mode lol. first time I saw it floating on the surface with it's "foot" I crapped it and thought it was dead then I saw it swim against the flow of water and burst out laughing. super cool when it finally drops to the substrate. very fascinating.
