It's like having a conversation with somebody while your are typing a text message on your phone, under the table, to somebody else. (read this somewhere)
This might sound too evident, but when you compose a song, it's yours, you got each and every note sticked into your head, both for your bassline and your vocals. The bass plays almost in "auto" mode, and you focus on the vocals that are very close to the bassline. If you make a cover, both playing bass and singing then you will be in trouble and have have to practise for a very long time.
He played a simpler line live. That might have been because it worked better, though, not because he couldn't play the part - this song was weird live, with the guitar playing the chords.
One of those 3-piece bands that produced masterpieces. As Andy Summers once said “in a 3 member group there is no-breather. You need to keep busy all the time”. Brilliant musicians
Sting never played the bassline this way live due to it interfering with his ability to sing it, as far as I know, he only played the original bassline when the album was being recorded at AIR in Montserret, there are also several citations on the song (I believe on the wiki as well) that he never played this version of the bassline live at concerts.
Sting (aka, Gordon Sumner) is such a massive talent, to this day. 'Nice to see you focusing on his work in The Police. It could be easy for casual listeners to undervalue his interesting bass playing, considering the power of his singing, song writing, and guitar skills.
Not one instrument plays on the one in this song. Stewart Copeland acknowledges that this drum pattern is one of his hardest for that reason. Such a killer song and album. Great job on this cover. YOu bring back memories for this old man.
1. Obviously love the bass playing. 2. Love the facial expressions. It's like you're in a dream world. 3. Love how you switched from playing with a pick to playing with your fingers. Very cool! Gracias, Julia!
This is my favorite Police song. For many years Ghosts in the Machine was my only Police record. I learned the song when it first came back in the early 80's and relearned it and jammed on it with a couple of friends over the past year. In the 80's I played it with a pick. Today I play it with my fingers. Great bass line(s).
Ghost…was my 1st Police album & the very first album I bought with my own money. I can still remember where & approximately when I bought it. It holds a special place in my heart, then again, doesn’t all of their work? (Like choosing the best Beatles album, right?) As a drummer, Stewart & Neil P. we’re my greatest influences (I think most Gen-X drummers would say the same).Back then it was impossible not to be effected by their playing. Prior to watching this video, I worried that Julia might play the bass line incorrectly, as is often done. She plays it exactly as I hear it. So that makes her correct;). Play on, my friend!
I don't understand why I even watch these videos)) I like this immersion more. The facial expressions and immersion in the guitar make me smile. Plays well
Great to see you again! I know you are super busy, which is q good thing. Hope you are well and grovin' in the pocket of your choosing 😊 Dbl hand waves!
2:13 Oh that’s such a cool move to switch from pic to finger style within a glimpse of an eye! But where the heck did you hide it?? What kind of magic is going on here? 😂
Excellent cover of this song. I know I've said it before Julia, but your precision and technique is so deadly accurate. I've been a bassist since about 1978, and I really enjoy your lessons.
Dead End Job is the best police bass line hands down. Andy Summers talked about when they played that live people would be jaw open at Sting playing the bass line and singing at the same time. But anything Julia choses is just *chefs kiss* kudos.
Julia, you did a great James Jamerson video but you also need to review Bob Babbitt bass parts he did with Motown and beyond! Keep the fun videos coming. Best Regards, JP
Hey 👋🏽 Julia! I really like 👍🏽 the fact you started finger style play going into the 3rd verse which has the same tone change Sting 🐝 does on the album 💿 version! You nailed it! ✌🏽
I'm a bit late to the game with this channel (my loss!!) But with each video I watch, I can't wait for another! I'm a bassist myself, but NOT like this!!!
thanks Julia. I really like this bass line. A lot of rhythm that reaches your feet and you can't stop moving. It's one of my favorite police songs. very well touched
Thank you, Julia! When I saw this upload I knew it was because many people, myself included, mentioned it in a previous comment section. Such a simple, yet somehow sofisticated and captivating bass line :)
The police are the main reason I started on guitar, we got my brother this bass for his 40th birthday. Excellent job, if people like this riff, try searching out some of the live versions, particularly the US Festival ‘82.
I’m not seeing enough of you Julia. I need more bass, and more Julia. Thomann is letting me down with other filler material that does not contain fantastic bass grooves. I love bass grooves, and Julia is an aesthetic deliverer or the low end.
How in the world can he sing at the same time? It never ceases to impress me.

Amazing Trio
He plays it differently live, less complex. Still an awesome bass player tho.
He played a simpler line live. That might have been because it worked better, though, not because he couldn't play the part - this song was weird live, with the guitar playing the chords.
Sting would play this while singing! All of the members of the Police were beasts on their instruments.

see the Gateshead concert from 1982. He plays the syncopated part between the sung verses, while the simplified phrase during singing @@nkogliaz
On sniff yeah
He didn’t play it like that live
Julia ...The Spirit of the bass ! 😊
As a complete Police nutcase and Bassist. Myself you nailed that..
Thank God for Julia Hofer! Too long away, as always. Always the best content on bass from this lady.
You show why the bass player is always the coolest member of the band!
So very true and my favorite bass player is Geddy Lee and it is great singing as well at the same time

Ever heard of reggae music?
@@reggaefan2700 of course I have.
First part using a pick, the second part fingered.... And both absolutely flawless. Julia's talent is truly amazing.
1. Obviously love the bass playing. 2. Love the facial expressions. It's like you're in a dream world. 3. Love how you switched from playing with a pick to playing with your fingers. Very cool! Gracias, Julia!
thought a long time how to express your "2." without sounding stupid (or creepy) you did it for me - thanks ;-)
My favorite Police song played my favorite bass RUclipsr. Thanks Julia!

Man we’ve always had some worthy and fantastic bass lines and riffs, keep thumping brother!!
Love this bass line. Never get tired of playing it on my Fender Jazz
One of Police's best songs. The bass is great. Cheers Julia for this excellent video
this song feels like spirits in a material world. ingenious. Sting is a godly gifted musician.
I don't understand why I even watch these videos)) I like this immersion more. The facial expressions and immersion in the guitar make me smile. Plays well
I Never miss a single Julia’s vid. Happy moment. Thanks
Singing the verse while playing that bassline is... really hard. Great song. Great bass playing
Funky AF ,love the bass . It's how want mine to look but in blue !
Great to see you again! I know you are super busy, which is q good thing. Hope you are well and grovin' in the pocket of your choosing 😊 Dbl hand waves!

Safe to say, this is a basically perfect cover. The tone, timing, and dynamics are all very impressive.
You got that down to a tea. Just the right amount of attack.. but also very smooth...sting is so so underrated such a gifted musician...
Friday, bassgoddess, life is good. Have a epic weekend Julia
Well played Julia! The groove switching is cool and I think fits so well with the music.
I never knew this song had such a killer bass line! Nice playing
Exactly! I wish bands would mix tracks like this, with the bass much more prominent.
Awesome going up the neck, then to the bridge, then back to the plectrum! Suits each section of the song.
i asked you, exhaustively, to play this song and you did It.
thank a lot and greetings from brazil
Thanks Julia for this excellent cover ! See U soon. François
I love her smile... infectious. Also, one of my favorite bands.
ok, ok...
Dead End Job is the best police bass line hands down. Andy Summers talked about when they played that live people would be jaw open at Sting playing the bass line and singing at the same time. But anything Julia choses is just *chefs kiss* kudos.
Dead End Job- Another correct answer!
I saw a version you did with drums before. But solo, this take's the cake! Thank you Jon.
Julia, you did a great James Jamerson video but you also need to review Bob Babbitt bass parts he did with Motown and beyond! Keep the fun videos coming. Best Regards, JP
Yeah ! I told you about this one ! Thanks Julia !
This is for sure one of my favorite Police tracks and bass lines. Thanks for covering it. And for the swinging and bass face! 😅
Police were one of the (very) few 80s bands I REALLY loved! ❤
Those 1st two LPs -I was such a fan-such a bass driven band-you have to love a three piece.
I like the Stingrays snap!
Awesome group! Really very ahead of their time! Sting , Andy and Stewart were insane talent!
Best Bass Face EVER‼️🙌🏼✨😍
the best and most beautiful bassist in the world!!!😍
Julia, you are the greatest bass player the world...
Hey 👋🏽 Julia! I really like 👍🏽 the fact you started finger style play going into the 3rd verse which has the same tone change Sting 🐝 does on the album 💿 version! You nailed it! ✌🏽
Great job
Great Bass Line by one of the greats! Fab job as always Julia.
Awesome
I just love your playing. So cool.
It’s hypnotic.
Thanks Julia, also one of my faves from The Police !
STING is the reason I bought a Tele-bass as my first choice
Great stuff Julia. Stings bass line songs are the hardest to play. He is a genius
Hungry for You from same album also drives a strong bass……as i found out through the walls in nurses accommodation many years ago
i like it, i like it a lot
My other favorite song from The Police, real 🔥🔥🔥 bass line and nice job as usual Julia ❤️🎸
Hi Julia . Thank you for sharing new video, always is great class
Thank you! (and I never could figure out where the 1 is in this tune...)
Thank you, Julia! When I saw this upload I knew it was because many people, myself included, mentioned it in a previous comment section. Such a simple, yet somehow sofisticated and captivating bass line :)
I wonder if Sting had tuned his Van Zalinge bass lower at 2:19 minute? Thanks Julia 👍😘
Love your playing, big fan and thank you for the notation.
Wow, I remember learning this when it first came out. An incredible bass line and well executed J.
Hey Julia, this is my favourite song by The Police!! ✌️😁
Love the Police ! And I've always loved this song -- but you pointed out the bass lines in such a good way. Thanks!
I love it !! I still listen to alblum
Cool bass cover ! Thank you Julia ;-)
