The Premier League 22/23 season is wrapped up, which means it’s time for Tifo to pick their Team of the Season. This year has seen a lot of breakout performances with a resurgent Newcastle back in Champions League football and brilliant Brighton side powered by Roberto De Zerbi.
JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie are here to dissect the season that’s been, going head to head in picking their favourite players from this season.

Amazing idea 💡
It would still have no chelsea players
Thing about Allison is you don't see him a lot in games where he makes an acrobatic saves but in play where a sudden Liverpool lose the ball and counter attack emerges where he makes a very routine save but then we play Kheller and understand all of this routine save is down to his positiong
Fr yesterday kelleher made Allison's routine saves look world class which he is world class
Very true! That has a lot to do with the goalkeeper trainer of Liverpoll and Brazil national team, Taffarel. He was known as a great goalkeeper who strived in positioning himself orther than make acrobatic saves.
Oh yh Allison never makes good saves. Best keeper in the league. Just because he doesn’t do the unnecessary jumping to make it look acrobatic.
I'm enjoying JJ taking the role of keeping the discussion on point
He's so focused on looking not a united fan 😂 he looks weird these days 😅
I'm enjoying JJ.
@@a1a300 Is he a united fan? I know he supports aberdeen but I didn't think he was a glory supporter
@@a1a300 he's not a united fan. He's said before on the podcast that he actually somewhat dislikes them
I ran these teams in a one-off football manager match, and it was crazy.
Both teams had the same formation and starting lineup as shown in the video, team instructions and player instructions were fairly minimal and the players were usually given their best role
My prediction would be that JJ stomped as Jon's defence wasn't rated very highly by FM
(I will now be writing like commentary)
15 minutes in and JJ is clearly winning this battle so far, he has 5 shots compared to Jon's 2, 2 of which are on target with a total of 0.58 xG, Jon meanwhile only has 2 off-target shots and only 0.02 xG. JJ is clearly dominating the possession battle with 57% possession
25'
Saka scores! (Jon) (1-0)
Stones brings the ball up and passes to Kane who is on the halfway line. Rodri presses him but Kane does a beautiful cross-field pass to Mitoma who receives it right on the byline. Mitoma passes it backwards to Shaw, who passes it back to Mitoma over the top of the defence who is just on the side of the 18-yard box, he cuts it back to Odegaard standing on the edge of the box, who in turn passes it to Saka who nets from 12 yards out with a decisive finish into the top right.
30 minutes in and that goal is the only shot Jon has had in the last 15 minutes however his xG had risen to 0.18 and now had 48% possession. JJ meanwhile has produced fewer shots than he did in the first 15 but higher quality ones with 8 shots in total, 3 of them on target, and 1.05xG.
33'
Rashford scores! (JJ) (1-1)
Rodri picks up a loose ball just outside his own box, He passes to Rice who passes it back to Saliba. Saliba plays a long ball the Guimaraes (Jon) wins, but JJ's Rodri picks up the loose ball again. he passes it out wide to Saka who attempts a move he tried merely 30 seconds earlier which failed, cutting in from the right at the halfway line and playing the long ball to Rashford, but this time it works. Rashford picks it up on the edge of the 18-yard box, chests it, and after a bounce, volleys it into the far bottom corner with his weak left foot from the 6-yard box.
It's Half time now and Jon has started to create some more chances while JJ is still slowing down, this is a much closer affair than I thought it would be. Jon has 6 shots now, 2 on target and 0.82 xG now leading is possession with 51%. JJ meanwhile, similarly to Jon when he scored, only got 1 shot in the last 15 minutes being his goal; this brings him to a total of 1.23xG
60 minutes in and the momentum has shifted again! Jon has only had one shot in the last 15 minutes bringing his total to 7 shots, 3 on target and 0.9xG, while now only having 47% possession. JJ meanwhile has 14 shots 7 on target and now has 2.04xG. They now each decide to make a substitution Jon taking Kane off and putting Watkins on, JJ taking Rice off and putting Palhinha on, both of which you have to say are deserving substitutions as neither are anywhere near their usual standard.
70 minutes in and another set of substitutions are being made. Guimaraes comes off for Jon as he is looking for something new by putting De Bruyne on, Saka also comes off for Jon as Saka hasn't played that well apart from his goal, with Salah replacing him. Guimaraes also comes off for JJ as he is tired after picking up a knock earlier in the game, Odegaard replaces him.
74'
Red card! (Kieran Trippier) (Jon)
Trippier picks up his second yellow. After a bad first touch trying to intercept a pass from Shaw to Rashford, it falls behind him and Rashford picks it up. Trippier tries to reach the ball first but fouls Rashford who would've had a lot of space down the line. Jon's team is now down to 10 men and has shifted to a 4-4-1 with Watkins coming back off so Saliba can fill the right back spot.
75 minutes in and it is still a close affair. Jon now has 10 shots, 6 on target with 1.42xG, JJ has had more shots with 19 in total now and 9 on target but with only a small growth in xG which is now at 2.35. however, he is still dominating possession with 54%
80 minutes in now and JJ makes another substitution Haaland comes off after a thoroughly average performance which simply isn't good enough compared to the rest of his team who are all having an excellent game, it's an unorthodox replacement though as Salah comes on too replace him who normally favours the right wing.
90 minutes in and the ref has just blown the whistle for the end of regular time. JJ is really starting to dominate now with 25 shots 11 on target and 3.29 xG maintaining his 54% control of possession. Jon has had another 2 shots though, both of target bringing his xG to 1.84
98'
Salah scores! (JJ) (1-2)
Shaw runs the ball up the pitch playing a ball to Rashford who runs forwards and tries to play a through ball to Salah, but Stones gets a foot to it. However, the ball falls back to Rashford who plays the balls to Salah's feet this time who turns in from the edge of the D and smashes the ball in the far top right corner from 15 yards out, leaving Raya with no chance. VAR finds nothing wrong with the goal and it stands.
113'
Salah scores! (JJ) (1-3)
Corner for JJ, Shaw puts the ball into the box but Saliba clears. Shaw picks up the loose ball and puts a low pass to Kane who is on the side of the 6 yard box. Saliba closes him down but Kane turns towards the line and shoots. Raya can only deflect the shot and Salah is first to pounce from 6 yards out. It really seems like the substitutions is paying off now
118'
Haaland scores! (Jon) (2-3)
Free kick for JJ far out, Odegaard delivers the ball in but Stones clears. De Bruyne picks up the ball and drives forward but Palhinha stops him from going further. So De Bruyne heads out wide and puts a delicious through ball to put Haaland through on goal, he takes the shot from 12 yards out and sends Alisson the wrong way, tucking it away in the bottom right. Could this get them back in the game?
120'
Alas, it was not to be as the whistle blows for full-time at 2-3. A much closer game than I was expecting but the winners deserved to win. It was a dominant display from JJ with 40 Shots 19 on target and 5.52xG. Jon meanwhile only had 16 shots, 10 on target with 2.46 xG

Feel like Thomas Frank is highly overlooked as one of the managers of the season, lowest budget, and 9th with 59 points.
“He’s offside”
When JJ is the voice of reason! 😂
Liverpool conceding as many goals as arsenal is all down to Alisson though. He massively outperformed their xGA, and as a United fan I know that’s not sustainable, because de gea was like that for a couple years and when he regressed to the mean, a massive reality check.
Part of why we're conceding so many chances is basically 8 Players in front of him not being bothered defensively, some actively hurting the team, like Henderson playing a defence splitting pass for Rashford's goal.
@@bri1085 Can't just blame your midfield, Van Dijk and Trent also getting exposed more because of better LWs and STs in the league this season.💀
yeah. Liverpool's defense was clearly worse than arsenal but they somehow conceded the same amount of goals as arsenal because of Alisson. Arsenal defense only became poor in the last 10 games.
At the beginning of the season Liverpool fans were loving their squad.
@@Nightsu I mentioned 8 Players, that's the defence and midfield, but especially the defence. Trent having to defend 2v1s is down to the midfield not being up to scratch.

Happy to see Luke Shaw in both TOTS. Massively underrated player, mainly because of the problems he's had covering for Harry Maguire in the past. He's really shined, though, with a much quicker, intelligent and positionally aware Martinez alongside him. Would get into any top side in the world right now and is quite comfortably the best LB in the league, currently!

As others have said, Casemiro. Especially after JJ’s video on his ability to keep driving the ball forward in transition. What really stood out as well was his presence on corners and how he always found that bit of space to be super dangerous.
When the Podcast is taken hostage by the warm hands of our Goblin King, I expect to still see some videos like these with two or more of the Tifo Lads together talking about football.

This is fun. They're discussing tactics in a team of the season video
I love it
Unai emery picked up an under-performing team from gerrard. They then broke the record for the longest consecutive goal scoring run of any team upon appointing a new manager. They also won 35 points from 17 games. I find it tough to take tifo seriously when emery was considered for ‘manager of the season’ when the obvious candidates were ruled out by the rubric of the exercise.
Emery did amazing, but he only had half a season. I think it’s difficult to give any manager the award for really only coaching for 15-18 games. In a full season he could have started a losing streak or suffered injury setbacks.
I agree Emery was phenomenal, but half a season is half a season.
Casemiro not being here is insane, same as KDB
I’m just happy that shaw is getting the recognition he deserves. He’s been the best lb in the league.
I don't know if he was THE best, but he's up there that's for sure. And I'm so happy for the lad.

Jon sneaking in 3 City players while pretending not to is funny af
I think Douglas Luiz might just be the most underrated player in the league. Honourable mentions to Rico Henry and Pascal Gross too.
Bruno with the most big chances created and most chances created in the league underperforming his xA by at least 10 because forwards couldn't score and he didn't have a striker.
Rashford had multiple stints at the most important times, out of his 17 goals 10 were match winners which he put the team on his back. His influence to his team is much more weighted than any other forward apart from Haaland and Kane.
both have had cracking seasons
Agree about Mitoma. Nice to see these different players burst onto the scene. And again Stones on that criteria as well. Haaland obviously as well.
My only disagreement is with Rice…thought Paulinha and Casemiro were far far superior without mentioning Caceido
not metioning Unai Emery was a huge miss for manager of the season by both JJ and John...
Not having Casemiro there is outrageous
No it isn't, he missed the first few games at the start &was then suspended, so that's a lot. & jj already had 2 man u players. Rodri, him & party (until the end), are all roughly on the same situation (club size), & on the same level. Five & Paul aren't far behind playing at wise clubs
No Antti Niemi…I thought this was a serious show
Martinelli had the same numbers of Rashford with not overlap FB and Xhaka on his side (so not very creative), and actually while the english had zero defensive tasks and played CF a lot, Martinelli operated the herculean task of cover Zinchenko... also more consistent in all the EPL season. Rashford you can argue better season only if you consider Europe League and Cups, but these competitions are out of scope.
Rashford and Martinelli both had great seasons but as an attacker, Rashford has had a much bigger impact on United than Martinelli has on Arsenal. 10 of Rashford's 17 league goals were match winners (only Harry Kane has got more). Only 5 of Martinelli's 15 were match winners. Rashford's goals ultimately played a huge role in helping Utd secure top 4 and if not for the injury, he'd have probably got another 3 or 4.
Bruno G over Bruno F is just silly JJ😂
Them playing football chess for a while was interesting
If your team doesn't have De Bruyne, then it's just stupid.
I’d have preferred a team of the season without the 2 players a team rule. Gabriel, Martinelli, de Bruyne and others all had much more worthy TOTS performances than quite a few in these teams
emery not being talked about as potential MOTS is crazy
This was who I was expecting from them. Villa went 3-3-7=12 under Gerrard and were in 16th. Then Emery comes in and they go 15-4-6=49 in the last 25 matches. He had them in European qualification by MD 29 and they stayed in 6th-8th the rest of the season. He's been amazing, and actually if he was there the whole season and kept that kind of output, it'd be Villa and not Newcastle getting 4th, with around 74-75 points.
Oh behave Villa was never getting forth. Top 6 maybe, but forth is a whole different ball game. They don't have the squad depth needed for a top-four run this season. Well see what happens next year.
If manager of the season is measured by performance on the season vs expectations, then surely it has to be either Arteta or Howe.
For me the Team of season would be Arsenal or Brighton. They exceeded expectations by a lot and are in wonderful position atm.

Surprised Jon didnt pick Jesse Marsch as his manager of the season. I know hes a big fan.
I wish there were more than a passing mention for Martinez given he was possibly just as much of a cheat code in possession for United as Stones was for City.
Finally a TOTS video where Luke Shaw gets his flowers. For a team with the most clean sheets in the league no one is really talking about United’s defense.
Especially when both Varane and Martinez have been injured. Says a lot about the whole team and ten Hag.
"Maybe next season we'll talk about how Pep solved the probem of Kane and Haaland in the same team" can't wait 🥶
Absolutely unreal anti United bias. Understand everyone wants to be hipster by being fashionably anti United but discounting Bruno Fernandes who played out of position to accommodate team tactics and still creating maximum big chances, not to even mention his defensive output and leadership - absolutely stinking bias.
16:08 he did score 2 against leeds!
"Nope." as in I'm not rerendering this video on a Sunday for release 😇
My list 3-2-4-1 : Emi Martinez (GK) - Bottman - L. Martinez- Saliba - Casemiro - Bruno Guimares - Mitoma - KDB - Maccalister - Salah - Haaland
My team of the season, using this tifo format of max two players per team ~
Formation : 4-2-3-1
GK: Allison
LB : estupinan
CB : saliba
CB : stones
RB : trippier
DM: guimaraes
DM: casemiro
CAM: odegaard
LF: rashford
CF: haaland
RF: mitoma
Subs:
Kane
Ramsey
Alexander Arnold
Mbeumo
Eze
No salah?
@@inquisitorsneed2 yeah he could be a sub instead of mbeumo or eze. Or you could replace mitoma with him. I suppose on paper he did have a much better season than mitoma
Neto, Trippier, Lisandro, Botman and Zinchenko, Casemiro, Odegard and de Bruyne, Salah, Haaland and Mitoma..
You blew my mind when you also thought of TMNT when he said "de bruyne in the half space "
Roberto De Zerbed it to be amongst managers of the year
"Ordinarily getting 50 goals would ensure a place in the team, however we've gone for Hoffenheims Ibrahim Gueye"
Did you mean Ibrahim Sangaré 😂😂😂
As a brighton fan, having Colwill on the sub bench over dunk is the definition of football contrarianism
I wholeheartedly love how serious you guys are taking this.
I like Jon's team a lot more. I'd probably have Ake in for Shaw and Saliba in for Stones though.
Pope
Trippier, Saliba, Shaw
Stones, Casemiro
Saka, KDB, Rashford
Kane, Haaland
4-2-4:
Alisson
Trippier
Stones
Saliba
Zinchenko
Rodri
De Bruyne
Salah
Kane
Haaland
Grealish
Bench:
Dias
Shaw
Odegaard
Saka
This is the deepest tactical XI discussion that I have seen online
22/23 team of the season
Gk- raya
Cb- Saliba
Cb- botman
Cb- Martinez
Mid- Bruno G
Mid- paulinho
Mid- KDB
Lw- Mitoma
Rw- Saka
St- Kane
St- Haaland
respectfully both teams have a few players which shouldn't be there. mitoma? guimaraes? saka?
Not mentioning Marco Marin is a criminal offense
Allisson; Trippier,Stones, Dunk,Estupinian ; Rodri, Odegaard,De Bruyne, Saka ; Kane, Haaland
I would like Thomas Frank as manager of the year. Incredible work at Brentford
I love JJs shirts
JJ's t-shirts man.... top notch 🐸
John did predict Kane would score a brace against Leeds
De Bruynes form dropped after the world cup, Pep even said he felt he wasnt at his best and dropped him for a few games but since he came back City went on that unbeaten run which helped them to win the league
'It really illustrates how Emery changed Aston Villa' - continues not to mention Emery as a potential manager of the season... LUL
My PL team of the season with no rules:
Formation: 3-5-2
GK: Nick Pope
CB 1: Saliba
CB 2: Ruben Dias
CB 3: Akanji
LWB: Estupinan
RWB: Trippier
CDM: Caicedo
CM 1: Kevin De Bruyne
CM 2: Odegard
ST 1: Haaland
ST 2: Harry Kane
Keeper?
@@inquisitorsneed2 oh yeah lol
@@inquisitorsneed2 I’ll fix it
@@inquisitorsneed2 fixed
No Man United players? lol
Using 4 CBs was something Arteta did before Pep this season. Just saying
In line with TIFO's rules
Team of the season:
Allison
Trippier Stones Martinez Shaw
Saka Rice Guimaraes Odegaard
Kane Haaland
Manager: Thomas Frank
.
Alison
Saliba Botman Martinez
Saka Rodri Guimaraes Rashford
Odegaard
Haaland Kane
I honestly think that LW, LM, LB position group is the weakest performance wise. It was basically between Rashford and Martinelli...and I honestly only had Shaw and Zinny in at LB, but a standard 433 is a bit boring. Odegaard is like 1A and De Bruyne 1B. Rice is 1B to Guimaraes being 1A. Unai Emery and De Zerbi should have a shout.
Gary and Steve have done amazing jobs at Bournemouth and Forest respectively.
I think Thomas Frank should be in with a big shout for manager of the season. Even if it’s just for Brentford’s performances against Man City. Outside of that, what he’s done with Brentford has been nuts and they keep getting better.
Agree with all that. I think Lopetegui is worth a shout at Wolves along side Howe or De Zerbi - taking them from bottom of the league with some useful players sold or loaned out. Interesting how Potter would have been perceived if he hadn't gone to Chelsea. Also interesting how the Rice, Calceido, Rodri position has been well received this season. Not too long ago Kante was singled out as a superb DM, but it feels there is a depth of talent in that role now.
My Team would be:
Formation 4-2-3-1
Manager Erik Ten Hag
GK Kepa
LB Zinchenko
LCB Lisandro Martinez
RCB John Stones
RB Trent Alexander-Arnold
LDM Rodri
RDM James Ward-Prowse
LW Kaoru Mitoma
CAM Alexis Mac Allister
RW Mohamed Salah
ST Harry Kane
I like their tactical board app/software, I wonder what name it is and how to get it?
The disrespect to Salah is astounding. Saka has great numbers and carried the team apparently with 13G 11A but Salah in the Same position had 19G 12A ....
I miss the videos where you'd stick teams in Football Manager and see who'd win. You should do that with these videos.
I want Jons sweater
Truly the player development from teams throughout the Prem this year has been outstanding. So many "Oh yeah, him too..." to choose from.
Similarly, the coaching standard has gone up a level across the board. It was only a few seasons ago where the Bundesliga was lauded in equal measure for the amount of tactical and critical football thinkers represented within their league. The Prem amplifies its product when results can't be assumed for sure week by week. The money is certainly a factor in it all, however the effort from coaching staffs should be given credit for making the league more interesting to engage in and watch.
Jon´s Ødegård pronunciation is one of the best I've ever heard from a non Norwegian speaker.
I’m still so pissed that they do such an in depth coverage for premier league. But the one time Milan won the Serie A it was an absolute joke of a Seri A tots
Guimaraes over De Bruyne is wild
What you missed was having Jacques De Bones on set u_u. And maybe the weirdly cropped ending to The Athletic's promo.
Otherwise I'm too tired to think about it right now, but wanted to help with engagement numbers (:
My version with the same criteria:
Alisson
Stones
Botman
Estupinan
Trippier
Caicedo
Odegaard
Saka
Rashford
Kane
Haaland
Rice over Casemiro is criminal
16:40 sorry that’s micah not mitoma
Never thought about Haalands goal hole
There's something strange going on with all of these Newcastle picks for Podcast's teams of the season. Trippier's fine, but check any Newcastle fan vote for this season, Botman and Bruno are never at the top. Schär and Joelinton were our star performers in central defence and midfield. What JJ said about us not being the same without Botman is surely mistaken identity as well, it's when Schär's out that we're not the same, not Botman.
Picking Colwill is the definition of hipster. Played well when he’s played but has featured in less than half of all games..
No mention of Almiron?
For a stretch this season, he looked almost as good as prime Messi
want consistent enough
Not having de Bruyne in the starting 11 is crazy
