I'm a Newcastle fan and Botman's been great, but he's been overrated if anything. Schär has arguably been the better of our CBs this season and never ever features in any TOTS or underrated TOTS. It's baffling.
@@fttw4401 100% agree. Schär has been pinging longballs like Trippier and regularly sustains head wounds from committed defenseive work. Sure he makes 1-2 silly errors now and again as well. Ultimately, unless you focus on players mid-game ("the eye test") -- statistics are likely to mislead you (most shocking comment on the internet...)
As a biased Brighton fan the thing I feel people miss about Dunk is the consistency and versatility. He's arguably been our best player for 8 years in a row now. He's performed well in every season he's played in the prem, and done so while adapting to a really wide range of tactical approaches from Chrissy's defensive approach to having the second most passes completed in the league under De Zerbi. None of the big name CB's have shown anything like his consistency or had anything like the impact on their teams that Dunk has had over the last decade.
@L the PL just put up a video in which they call his pass to Bruno for his last goal one of the passes of the season. Also the metrics they were using on that choice were purely defensive. Passing didn't come into it.
Feels like some very strange metrics to choose to rate a player. Very specific and only focused one one small part of their position rather than their overall game. You can have a great overall game performing well in multiple metrics and still be underrated.
I think it could get confusing quite quickly if you started measuring against more than 2 metrics for those not used to number crunching. I assume that Mark did this in the background and just showed the most relevant numbers
Fabian Schar is under-rated for sure. Botman gets the mentions because he's a new face but Schar put in a good contribution and offers unmatched long passing skill. Literally half of the best CB pairing in the league but never gets a mention! Criminal!
Curtis Jones has actually been very very good since coming back into the Liverpool side. Pitches in with goals and is a pressing machine who never loses the ball. Could be a big season for him next year
I'd personally go something like this: Neto; Gross, Konsa, Pinnock, Burn; D.Luiz, Iwobi, Billing; J.Ramsey, C.Wilson, March. Plenty of others I've missed out who I'd choose before the likes of Coufal. Henry, Willian, Dawson, Murphy all been impressive and overlooked by most.
Never in my life did I ever think I'd be watching a football podcast where the pundit not only provides insightful advice; but does it whilst wearing a NOFX tee shirt.
Very nice lads! Just a quick one on Callum Wilson, the data might suggest he's not a team player, but this is far from true. Rarely have I see an out and out goalscorer be so unselfish. He loves to score goals, but I've watched every Newcastle game this year and 9 times out of 10, if he sees an opportunity to pass to a teammate who's in a better goalscoring opportunity, he passes. The reason his stats are so Haaland'esque, I believe, is down to his ability to be in the right place at the right time, along with Newcastle's number of chances created per 90.
Nice shout. Always good to check the numbers with The Eye Test 😄. Haven't watched every Newcastle game, but yeah, he didn't strike me as particularly greedy like some players do when I did watch them/him play.
Wilson is also constantly making runs off the ball either to get in a good position or create space for another player to run into and exploit. He's the opposite of a static goal-hanger.
I think you done Wilson dirty in saying he's not a team player. He most certainly is. He initiates the famous Newcastle high press together with Almirón which is what has lead to the most turnovers in the opponents half of any team in the EPL this season. He also constantly threatens the deep run making sure that the opponent centre backs can't hold a high line out of fear of being played through.
Iwobi is underrated, there were some who were laughing at his move to Everton. As an Arsenal fan, he was always a willing runner, good transitional player, played with all his heart, but he just couldn't shoot or score.
Not sure about calling Botman, Palhinha and Wilson underrated, they've got loads of praise. Instead i probably would've gone Schär/Tarkowski/Dunk in the defense, Gakpo up front. Not sure about the cdm though tbf.
Really interesting about Callum Wilson especially since he got a rare England appearance at the world cup and got a clean opportunity in front of goal and chose to square it for Grealish.
As a Newcastle fan, I'd provably nominate Schär over Botman for this. Kicky tall star boy defender gets quite a few plaudits but handsome ping-passy Schär does not. Latest in a long line of Howe resculpts.
Hope Harvey Barnes gets a mention. Somehow 13 goals from him went under the radar completely. That’s more than Son, Isak and Nunez. Barnes is a midfielder…
Putting Coufal in your underrated TOTS because "we're ignoring defensive stats for fullbacks" and he has some slightly above average underlying attacking numbers is an absolute joke. He's not a premier league level player.
Alex Iwobi should be in this team. As an Everton fan, he is so much more valuable than the numbers suggest (and the numbers are good). Not only is he the best creator/most progressive player in our side, but he does all of this while also having a ridiculous defensive work rate. He is class.
@@SteRDLK Lol! I don't think you even understand your own argument. James Maddison was fantastic. Leicester were terrible. Alex Iwobi, whilst not as impressive as Maddison, was still good, despite playing for a poor Everton team. Can you genuinely not see the equivalence?

Palhina doesn’t want a move. I love you Tifo, but the league is better when mid table teams keep their best players, and I think that’s something you should support.
If you're going to use such a data-focused approach to an 'underrated' team, how do you create a metric for how highly somebody is rated, and where is that in the calculations? Who decides, for example, the level of De Bruyne's ratings (among whom? Fans? Pundits? Other players?) against his and other players' statistical contributions?
I wonder could you measure "character" indirectly - more as an influence on team mates (delta): team mate metrics of those in close proximity during the game (to simplify maybe average positions every 10mim) vs same team mates when the player isn't on the pitch? Or something like that. Which set of metrics could be a challenge, do you look at passes received, runs made, touches in the box etc when measuring a play maker vs tackle & interception frequency, when measuring a defender OR do you pick the metric based on each team mates perceived role OR do you just measure their effect on all stats of their teammates OR do you apply weightings? I mean I guess you could try different permutations and see what output makes the most sense.
Could the reason there are primarily left backs in the "Expected Assists per 100 touches" statistic be that the right backs have been more heavily involved defensively this season ? A sizeable number of the premier league left wingers/wing backs have overperformed this season. If so, would love to see a video on the ones who stood out particularly !
Here is my (actually underrated) team: Leno White Schaar Pinnock Moreno Noorgaard Iwobi Xhaka March Watkins Gibbs-White Honorable mentions: Eze, Fred, Dunk, Joelinton, Mbeumo, Raya
Interesting as a Utd fan to look at the midfield numbers… u can see with Mount and Fernandes at the opposite end of the progressive carries/ passes axes how they might work together.
Something that jumped out at me was them picking Botman, when I think many people talk about him as one of the best CBs this season. But, very close in the metrics, was Rafa Varane, who noone has talked about enough this season for how good he's been.
tbh i dont think Botman is underrated. idk what the general opinion on him is, but mine is that he is in my team of the season without any doubt. maybe everyone thinks differently, but i feel that Botman was so obviously good this season that its hard to call him underrated. personally, i'd throw in Tyrone Mings or Lewis Dunk

@@malcolmchhakchhuak9150think they were praised as much as any other CBs tbh, by analysts & fans if not "pundits". It might feel like less because they weren't used for the full season iirc - (mainly when Cancelo left & ye used 3 CBs wasn't it?), plus City only had 11 clean sheets this season instead of their usual 19 or 20. Not saying the 11 weren't heavily influenced by them, just that it's a high bar for any defender in the current City team (and in any team that dominated possession and/or was defensively solid already)
Much of this analysis is dubious. For instance, kicking the ball into the box isn't a great measure of a good player. Coufal crossing from deep could mean he's forcing balls into the box instead constructing a better opportunity with more patient penetration. Data indicates assists give a higher chance to score when they are delivered from closer to the goal.
