Turok 2008 wasn't a commercial failure, in fact it sold well enough to green light a sequel. The only reason we didn't get that sequel is because Disney forced the dev to focus on a Tron tie in game. That game flopped and Disney shut down the dev who was also working on a cool looking Pirates of the Caribbean RPG. I recommend watching Matt's What Happened video for Turok 2008. He goes into more detail than most reviews do for the game.
As for Turok 2008, I liked it as it was fun mix of Aliens, Jurassic Park, and Gears of War. Great voice cast for a reboot as well. The co op and multiplayer were fun too. Only thing that annoyed me was Disney forced the dev to censor blood and gore from the human soldiers. Knife kills still look gnarly on them, as do dino kills of human soldiers.
I hope Nightdive Studios could remaster this and Turok 3 for current consoles and pc. Maybe they could revive the cancelled sequel too, it really sounded interesting as the dev was going to introduce new enemy factions and probably add more over the top weapons. Dang Disney...

Ah, I always wondered about that. Because, like you said, I heard it sold well, and while not glowing, the reviews were pretty positive. This game is definitely an excellent foundation. A bigger and weirder sequel would have been amazing.

@kyleandjomo, One new enemy faction was going to be a tribe of Corporate Soldiers left behind on the dino planet who went feral. So yeah, the sequel was likely to be bigger and weirder.
Nightdive Studios is remastering Turok 3. Hopefully, they can do the same for Evolution and Turok 2008.

The only thing that stands out imo is fighting the dinosaurs of course.

Call of Turok: Gears of Oblivion was not my cup of tea.

A fair opinion! Even though I liked it, I think it would be better if it was less derivative.

@@kyleandjomo When they first announced the game, I was very excited, as the franchise was basically forgotten but like many other developers, they tried to cash in on the grey tone and gameplay that COD4 and Gears of War got popular for. Turok already had an interesting world; they could have tried something more related to the original.
EDIT: I would consider the original Prey 2006 an indirect or spiritual sequel to Turok instead lol

I don't dislike the game but it was a let down. I was disappointed when they announced they were going for a reboot instead of Turok 4 and this felt more like it would make a fitting Dino Crisis reboot then a Turok reboot Its not like there weren't several Turok comic book serieses they could draw ideas from a Turok reboot for without leaving the franchise basically unrecognizable and more like a love chile of Dino Crisis 3 and Aliens

One of the coolest things about the older games was the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink creativity. Dinosaurs? Aliens? Zombies? Who cares! Throw it all in there!
There are moments in this game that almost get there, but yeah, it's a different vibe overall.

It’s too bad that this IP is dead. With the resurgence of Boomer Shooters in both the indie scene and major players like Doom you’d think that we’d get a new game. I haven’t read the comics and I NEED to get around to playing the games (hopefully Nightdive Studios remaster 3 and the prequel game with some quality of life improvements). I’m assuming there’s enough source material to make a story that’s compelling. If done right we could have something truly AMAZING.
I remember watching Jarek’s review of this game and he was saying a lot of the same things where on it’s own the game would be perfectly serviceable and would’ve been forgotten. But, as a Turok game it falls flat. It’s too bad that a lot of games just copied what was popular at the time and failed to understand what made the things they were copying work in the first place. They’d oftentimes add stuff that conflicted with the main design of their games, and also didn’t go far enough with said features to make them work.
Good luck on your other stuff. If you cover more dinosaur related games maybe you could talk about stuff like Dino Crisis (Capcom should really start remaking those games to revitalize the series) and/or those Carnivores games.

Yes, it seems like they tried to fit Turok into a more generic, industry-standard design, maybe in an attempt to widen its appeal and lessen the risk. But hey, at least they did a good job with it. Gameplay is very solid, even if it doesn't scratch quite the same itch as the originals.
I have plans for some Dino Crisis videos down the line, and a there's a few other dinosaur games I'd love to talk about as well.
