  • You can raise your HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) with these 5 easy steps. These steps are reliable, easy and the results are permanent as long as you keep doing the steps. A high HDL is very healthy and prevents heart attack and stroke in people just like you.
Don't worry about lowering your LDL, focus all your effort on raising your HDL because it will protect you. There is no prescription drug that will raise your HDL safely and reliably, and very few supplements that actually work.

Thank you for all the videos on cholesterol. Good news! After my LDL went up, my doctor's nurse called to tell me the news and to tell me that my cardiologist wanted me to start on Lipitor. I made an appt with my doctor. Saw her today and we discussed Keto. She didn't know that I'd been doing Keto now for three years. She says I'm in great health, not overweight, all other markers are great. So before I could even ask for a CAC, she brought it up. She reversed her decision of me going on a statin. I wouldn't have anyway. I was so pleased that she was knowledgeable about low carb. She said that anyone who sees her who is overweight, she puts them on a low carb diet. It was so good to hear!!

I wonder what I'm doing wrong. Dr. Berry. Saying hello from Ooltewah, Tn. I am 57 years old. I have been on Carnivore for about 6 weeks. I started at 235lbs. Today I weighed 203lbs. I also, visited my doctor at the VA and among other things, we went over my labs. I don't have my old lab numbers for reference. but all of my numbers improved except HDL. It has hovered around 30 for a good while and that was it was this time, 30. However, my other numbers improved significantly. My Overall Cholesterol was 114 , down from nearly 200. My LDL was 63.7, down from about 120, Triglycerides was 100 from about 230, my Chol/HDL Ratio is 3.8. My Glucose was 87 down from about 130. My A1C was 5.5, down from 5.9. SO my HDL is my issue that I cant get under control. I am on a low dose of Rosuvastatin (10mg) and I also take Carvedilol (6.5mg twice a day.) Exercise and sleep are my two biggest problems from your list. I have sleep apnea (waiting on a new sleep study to see if weight lose has improved that), but, I don't sleep well. I have been taken 10mg Ambien for some time now and I can not get to sleep with out it. Or, at least I think I cant. If i miss a dose or accidently let it run out, that night, I do not sleep at all. The Ambien does get me to sleep, but no matter what I do, I can only get about 5 hours of sleep and wake up every night after about 4 hours and struggle to get much more sleep. I guess I am asking what do you think of that situation and how can I get more sleep? Will exercising more, help with that. I have been lacking in exercise because its hard to do a lot of lifting and other exercise due to a should rotator surgery that just made my shoulder worse. Also the shoulder and some hip discomfort, interrupt my sleep as well. Any thought you have on this would be much appreciated. If you can. Thanks. Love you videos and I am trying to convince my two brothers and my sister to look into Carnivore or Keto and to check out your videos. Keep up the good work.

Oh my goodness, you are doing spectacularly for just 6 weeks on carnivore. A 32 lb weightless and all you lab numbers except HDL look amazing. I think you need to give it more time. Keep doing what you are doing with your diet, it will get there. As for exercise I see you mention a shoulder injury. I would recommend you look into resistance bands to get you back and started. Much easier on your joints than weights. Give that a try. It will definitely help with your HDL and your sleep. You can get a pretty good workout in getting breathless and sweaty, it you do each exercise to complete muscle failure. As for sleep I really hope you can wean off the Rx. It really does mess up your sleep. Try switching it for melatonin, try a consistent bedtime ritual. I suffer with some of the same issues especially when fasting. I go to sleep but them about 3-4 hours later I am up and wide awake. It does play havoc on your body. I wish you well in your health journey. Good luck

Keep at it. I’m old and out of shape and have an extremely stressful job (not to mention family members that require constant attention) so any time I can walk until I’m winded and can watch a rare old actually funny movie I can sleep like a baby again. Ketovore, exercise and laughter are the keys for me! Wishing you good luck and health! You’ve got this!!!

I have had the same problem of getting my blood sugar under 100 consistently. What I believe is going on is that I've been doing this ultra low carb way of life for several years and my liver starts making sugar on its own. So what I've found to actually get my blood sugar to be lower by a good 15 to 18 points is to do two things daily: Do some arm weight exercises and also have just a tiny bit of carbs. When I have maybe two teaspoons of honey, it sort of tells my body not to start making sugar (gluconeogenesis is the term). These two things have helped. But I would still like to have waking blood sugar under 100 which seems almost impossible for me.

    • @janesmith492
      @janesmith492 3 года назад +2

@@jonfragments3294 I'm pretty sure gluconeogenesis is not the problem, at least for me. Gluconeogenesis is a demand-driven reaction which occurs only when the body needs glucose. If my blood glucose is high, then gluconeogenesis will not take place. I think rather the problem is insulin insensitivity, but I haven't figured out the mechanism yet. I wish Dr. Berry would do a video on this. I'm reading everything on the Internet, but I haven't found an explanation yet. It is very baffling. I'm 61 and my HDL has been 45 for forty years. My LDL has been all over the place, but my total cholesterol has never exceeded 177.
After starting fish oil, one pill at night, here and there, and eliminating alcohol, my triglycerides have gone from 265 to 155. My doc was pleased.
Working on raising HDL now with exercise and eggs, sunny side up (had to learn to like those). I tend towards a plant based diet though, so coconut oil is my saturated fat of choice. I put it in coffee and then don't eat solid food until noon or so.
I've done away with processed carbs. My microbiome is better (IBS sufferer for years). Eating tubers, roasted or baked with the peeling, has done wonders, along with eating garlic and onions, for my gut.
I eat a lot of pickles, olives, and kimchi and alternate greens with cruciferous vegetables to balance vitamins and minerals (darned phytates, oxylates, and lectins). Beans are my friend now, believe it or not, as long as I don't exceed 1/2 cup per day.
And I feel best eating 1500 calories or less per day. A1C and glucose are both coming down, though I've never been diabetic, just overweight. It's slowly coming off.
However, the best thing I ever did for my health was getting rid of the assholes in my life, except my own, of course. Meditation and gratitude take care of any strays that come around. They can't stand the higher frequencies.

Based on my experience, vigorous exercise is the key to raise HDL. I did swimming interval training that easily gets me winded and completely short of breath. I did that without diet control. After for around a month or more, my HDL increased from 72 to 86. LDL stays around the same at 122 because I have no diet control but do not limit too much intake of meat, egg and etc. Based on my experience, my LDL will decrease only if I lose weight much to the level that I feel low energy. Also, for LDL, it is very hereditary and as we know over 70 percent of cholesterol is made by our liver and it is the liver metabolism. So I believe the key to the cholesterol health is HDL and vigorous exercise. It should be very challenging and make you feel completely out of breath at least 15 minutes out of 1 hour exercise... well it can be different by person. Yet, the exercise that makes you feel comfortable will not do anything much....

I eat a pescatarian diet now for 11 years. My HDL was at its highest on the statin while eating fish and veggies and no red meat or poultry. We're all different I guess but when my HDL spiked to 49, I was walking 3 miles daily in addition to my daily routine as opposed to 2 mile a day on other days. I do know that fruits and vegetables can be a cause of arthritis from the research I've done because of the toxins they naturally carry to fend off bugs and such. It is 77 but the part that concerned me is that the LDL is over 100. After seeing this video, I feel better about this.
My doctor of course is not happy that the LDL is so high and HDL is so low and wants me on statins. I sent him the link that Dr. Berry posted a while ago about the study in women that shows the LOWEST factor in heart disease and heart attack is high cholesterol. His response was 'I don't know why you would follow a study done in women"
Well is the circulatory system in women THAT different than men? I will ask him at my physical in a few months. He's leaving it up to me to take the statins. If he were not, I would change doctors. But he does everything else VERY well.
Your comment is great. I will try berberine. I do briskly 30 minutes every other day and have a way to get more vigorous exercise on a machine, but I've heard from another doctor that if you are huffing and puffing, that raises your cortisol, which prevents fat loss. UGGGH!

I already was doing a keto like regime with Half and half in the coffee with monk fruit sweetener. I wasn’t hungry and liked the results. Then the real reason I wasn’t feeling well surfaced. An abscess tooth. Started as a general teethache at night for two days. I went to primary care and started clindamycin, but it left my teeth and went into my face. Two days later my eye almost swollen shut I had that tooth pulled. Then my face got drained. I’ve just finished the clindamycin, a 10 day 300 mg per dose regiment. My appetite is returning and so is my energy. And I’m 15 pounds lighter! I’m staying with it.
Lots of yard work to do with 10 days lost to the tooth, and being very out of shape I get winded chasing the mower around. String trimming, and then there’s the field mower. Not a huge field but a steep hill, some ravines and tricky spots and again I’m walk/running behind. I’m also almost 70 years young. I’ve been having a heart block issue that’s being analyzed now. The dizzy symptoms have kept me from pushing it and they are still with me. But now, also not carrying around 15 pounds makes all things easier. I drinking lots of water. Lots and lots. Take lots of supplements with some Rx’s and an electrolyte when working/sweating. I work myself to a standstill almost daily and that keeps the pounds falling off. I’ve gone from obese to overweight. A place I never thought I would see again. My goal is another 20 pounds. The BMI index I use says for my height, normal weight is from 95 to 126 pounds. I’m sure 95 is WAY too light. I’m shooting for 120 to 125. My HDL is low and my pcp has encouraged me to find out how to raise it. So thank you for doing this video!

I agree 100 percent how to you deal with a family doc that thinks a cholesterol level of 210 or 220 is too high. My triglycerides are fine and my HDL and LDLs are outta whack and I've been on keto for a year. I feel better in my 50s than I did in my 30s and 40s

Hi Dr Berry! I have always had good HDL levels, but ever since I lowered my carbs and gave up sugar my HDL has been over 100. My last blood work it was 110. Can it be too high? My doctor told me there is not any studies regarding very high HDL and wanted to put me on cholesterol medication because my other numbers were slightly elevated. I refused to take the medication. What are your thoughts?

My HDL has been over 100 too for many years. My LDL has been high as well . My total is 300. Even before I gave up sugar & carb my HDL is over 100. I don't do vigorous exercise . I do my chi machine exercise twice a day for few years now. My lab work always shows high blood lipids. I had a detail LDL lab work done twice & my large particles are high . My ND doctor said as long as my ratio is normal, no need to worry.

Since a few months, I've decided to stop using any vegetable oils while cooking. You know when you grease your pan a little to cook anything? I stopped using canola and olive oil for that; what I use and I find it so wholesome is butter, or clarified butter if I have any. It's so much more tasty, aromatic, and healthy.

My mom's HDL and LDL are under 40 and triglycerides are in the 200s (were closer to 400 at one point). Her doctor won't take her off of statins, and I've tried telling her to get off of them. She doesn't eat a lot of meat, and she has to be careful with what carbs she eats. She's, also, a diabetic that has been controlled with Lugol's iodine, but still takes a once a day insulin.

For years I have been battling low HDL cholesterol. Not even a low-carb diet and exercise could get me above 40. It was only until I started taking a resveratrol supplement that I was able to do so. The last lab work I did was in January and I had an HDL of 51.

Same here on the HDL. It's been a genuine battle, despite low-carb, plenty of exercise (emphais: resistance and HIIT). Rez helped a lot. I'm at 54, which is a lifetime high, alongside TriG of 48.

A coworker actually showed me her blood work cholesterol results. It blew my mind away. Her HDL levels were above 110 and her triglycerides were under 60. She does NOT exercise at all and she's a heavy smoker. However, she told me she doesn't eat much carbs and she sleeps about 7 hours on average.

Ive been doing Keto/Carnivore for the last 6 months solid, and previously did carnivore for over a year (previous issues with SIBO). I exercise 2 to 3 times a week with heavy to moderate weights, keeping the reps between 6 and 20 depending on the set. I push a sled across the floor because of some knee issues, this is one exercise that causes me the least pain. My workout takes about an 1.5 hours and there is a 30 min sauna included. Funny thing is, my cholesterol came back at 315 just for LDL and my HDL was at 30. So, none of what you are saying in this video helped me in the slightest, as a matter of fact, I just got out of the hospital after suffering my second heart attack, I now have 6 stents and will likely have to be on some medication for the rest of my life after taking the advice offered in this video. Please explain this, also, when I eat red meat, my toes go numb, indicating that there is increased inflammation. I would occasionally eat some mushrooms and red peppers, serranos and jalapenos, but my last trip to the gym, pushing the sled across the floor, my chest felt strange, and a half hour later I was in the ER getting my groin shaved and having instruments run up my femoral artery to open the arteries going to my heart, I would like to know why this happened.

I was actually once told by someone testing me that they've never seen an HDL level as high as mine. I eat fairly decent although I'm at a point now where I'm trying to eliminate beef jerky/sticks, cheese while also reducing any foods high in sugar and cholesterol.

In my last lipid test (28 Sep 2023) my HDL was 115 mg/dL (6.38 mmol/L). My doctor says that anything over 59 mg/dL (3.27 mmol/L) is too high. She wants me on a statin. I keep telling her I’ll think about it. (I will never take a statin.) My triglycerides were 45 mg/dL (2.5 mmol/L), so my trig-to-HDL ratio is 0.4 (optimal is 0.4 to 1.9). My blood pressure was 107 / 68. Nonetheless my doctor wants me on a statin. She gets no money from this, but she must follow the formal “standard of care” which is dictated by Big Pharma so as to maximize drug sales.

@@konradx498Odd usually high LDL cholesterol is what they look for when prescribing a statin. I would consult a cardiologist they use a computer formula that calculates your risk factors of heart attack. Takes into account family history, and other factors as well. You can get a CT-CAC score test insurance won't pay for only $200 once a year check how much calcium building in the heart. They also look for any cancer in the chest. While nonsmoking lung cancer is rare still happens most don't catch it early enough once a year CT scan of the chest is a good way to catch it early.

Thanks for the advice! That said:
You have to watch the transfats, which we were told were phased out and, yet, companies can get away with not labelling if under a certain amt., which is strangely higher than expected. Read the labels. Learn about the ingredients on them. Some make you think they are healthy saying they don’t have high fructose corn syrup or no artificial flavors or the like in the front. Maybe they think it’s enough.
I would shoot for reliability when it comes to a study. Look for multiple ones.
I had another impression I forgot, but add to this your own research.
