  • Professional Guide Alyssa Halls shows us how she sets up a Hopper Dropper rig while fishing with Mark Melnyk in rivers near Sheridan Wyoming. Alyssa puts together a great system of three flies, each a unique pattern below the hopper, explaining in detail why this setup works so well. Both she and Mark use this three fly hopper/dropper rig to great effect on rainbow trout!

    Hi Mark,
    When the full length video originally came out from your trip, I noticed the guide had her own fly tying business and I was interested in her patterns. I tried to locate her website but it had been shutdown with a note they were moving elsewhere. Do you know if her flies are still available? Thanks in advance and it’s very cool to see such a knowledgeable female fly fishing guide. I wish my own daughter had shown the same interest because she’s good at everything!
    That was a tremendous project you filmed. Please keep them coming! More segments on Stillwater would be welcome. Thank you!

      Hi Jeff, Thanks for the kind words. As far as I know, Alyssa is still a commercial fly tier in Thermopolis, WY. She and her husband are back in the US now after being in Christmas Island for a year. Her company is Owl Creek Flies. Good Luck!

    For setting this up for my kids to fish with... what length leader and tippet would you use to the hopper? Longer length leaders seem to be a problem with their level of casting ability.

      try a straight piece of mono, six feet long to the hopper, then a dropper 18 inches below. hope it works

    How did you tie on the droppers? Off the hook bend on the hopper and the crane fly nymph?

  • @rlwkirsch
    @rlwkirsch 3 года назад +2

    It look like she put the first dropper about 30" below the hopper, and the second about 18" below the first. Is that correct? How deep was the water?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  3 года назад

      Hi Rob - the water wasn't very deep as I recall and don't think the nymphs were hung that long.. I'll ask Alyssa and get back to you.

    I noticed you use 3x on the last bug. do i also use 3x above the bottom bug? What length do you recommend?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  3 года назад

      Hi Jacob, We actually used 4X on the bottom bug and 3 X from the hopper to the 2nd fly. Length depends on depth of water and how the fish are feeding. If they are eating emergers, you can go very short off the hopper conversely, you may need to go deeper if using a nymph like a perdigon.

      I'm not a dry fly purist but 2 droppers seems overkill to me as it's hard enough to have one nymph steer the Hopper ( or medium to large foam fly) let alone another smaller anchor nymph. To many fly's fighting each other for drift control.

    What kind of knot do you use when you tie the lower flies?

    • @newflyfisher

      I simply use an improved clinch knot both for the eye and the bend of the hook. Thanks Paula

    • @newflyfisher

      The fish ate all 3 flies but as i recall, the cranefly larva was the champ. That is, before we switched to pseudo dry's .

    Have you ever tried the Tups indispensible dry fly. A proper dry fly from here in the UK.
    Now thats real dry fly fishing!!! I'm not really as smug as this sounds!

    What accent is that? I'm guessing Wyoming from the location. You can tell just from watching her mouth that her words are all at the front of her palate, or whatever it's called. Either way, I've definitely never heard one quite like that.
    Anyway, I've yet to try even a double dropper! I do have a big chernobyl ant somewhere, so I guess I'll have to try this out :)

    • @newflyfisher

      timothy, that is a big and heavy nymph....so your going to need a big foam hopper that is buoyant. Probably a size 4-6 I would say
