Binge-watching your channel !! I began swimming at age 4 and was a lifeguard at 13 in Canada. I began freediving at age 11 and could hold my breath about 6 minutes and swim about 200m without fins. I also played all the brass instruments and sang in the church choir, so I had learned about diaphragmatic breathing very early on. Now, much later in life and a grandpa, I want to get back into snorkeling and enjoying the beach with my grandson. Thanks for the annoyingly long video - much appreciated !! 🤣

I must have watched this video 3 or 4 times over and over and then all of a sudden today, after leaving it for about a year, watching it now it just clicked! THANK YOU!
I just want to say that they actually went to a freediving course after watching your videos... And my only regret is that I didn't find it sooner in life because it's now my favorite thing to do... Thanks Adam ✌🏾
This form of breathe up has helped with my problem of COPD. Ok so I can't freedive but at least I can walk down my garden without getting so out of breath. I have even mentioned your video to my freind who also suffers COPD. Thankyou.
Thank you for pointing out there's no perfect way to approach breath ups prior to a dive. All of our physiology is different and we react accordingly. Great video, I've been researching gaining any additional bit of information prior to an upcoming Level 4 course, this helped! Lastly, to all those attempting to learn freediving from RUclips stop where you're at now. As mentioned in this video nothing replaces the time and skills learned during a course while safely being monitored by an Instructor.
Ohh man i have been diving for years but after this video i guss i was diving unsafe and near the blackout area ... Thank you mate for this tons of information ... It was really helpful ... Thanx alot god will pay u back for helping people for free
I only swim in local lakes and rivers and am working my way to a simple 2 minute dive for the simple recreational swimming I do. Thus, taking a course or something is not very feasible for me. I said all of that to say...Thank you for making these simple videos...and I hope your classes fill up for years to come. I've learned a ton just watching these and if I ever get into the real "deep water" I would love to do so at one of your events. So thanks!
Thank You Adam for this tremendously simple and veritable explanation of physiological processes taking place in our lungs! I was lucky to discover this channel and from now on I will use it not only as exceptional source of useful information about freediving , but also as a way to improve my English. Your pronunciation is so clear and pleasant to hear that i would agree with commenters who noticed pedagogical talents of yours.
Using my BreatheEasy Lung Exerciser I’ve made tremendous improvements in my breathing capacity and endurance. Additionally, I now always breath through my nose and hold my breath with empty lungs for as long as I can to trigger an increase in red blood cells. I was a mouth breather by mistake to my detriment, including anxiety. I’ve seen my energy/libido increase, my outlook on life be bright and my sleep is deeper. My sinuses also stay clear due to the nose breathing. At night I tape my mouth gently shut to prevent mouth breathing. I’m truly grateful I got my breathing fixed!
Adam you have inspired me to swim a lot more thank you 😊 I also went from 1:00 to 2:00 on holding my breath thanks again 😊🙂👍keep up the amazing work on your RUclips videos
Cheers mate, greetings from Australia! Great video, well articulated and lots to unpack! Just found your channel, look forward to the other videos you have.
I'm glad I found your channel! I need to look over you material. I am brand new. To free diving. I usually swim around fresh water springs. My deepest was only a mere 30 ft. Where I lack is equalization and sinus cavities. I got punched in middle school and my septum is so deviated that they couldn't even get a tiny COVID swab in it. Luckily my right side is fine. Apparently on Friday, my sinuses were pressurized while trying to go down so I was trying to pop my ears my pinching my nose and pushing. Well apparently I pushed too hard or something because the nerves in ym teeth, especially on my bas sinus side began ringing with sharp pain, and my sinuses felt very inflamed. I blew my nose to discover I must have ruptured something in my sinus cavity as I was now bleeding . Once they released, I coughed out what looked like my kidney through my post nasal. I'm still getting residual now and then. So I don't know if that was a very rooky mistake or due to my injury in the past that I annoy dive deep. None the less I want to learn the breath hold as we also like to snorkel reefs when we can. Sorry for the long post. I am just looking for answers.
cheers dude ! theres a lot of people around the world who live a life based around freediving for either practical sometimes survival reasons or more commonly a strong passionate hobby in any of those situations not everyone can afford or easily attend proper training or courses to assist with the safe practices to work through things properly usually results in years of dangerous exploring of boundaries and testing physical limits discovering experimental personal techniques without understanding of physics involved. i value the time and effort you put in and the awareness you have towards the safety of people in those situations. you do a pretty good job of properly explaining things in detail in clear easily understood context with very handy key points to know and understand properly.
rob meier thanks so much Rob. I really appreciate that :) I do get a little annoyed at the instructors that hold information back and simply think that everyone needs to take a Freediving course. The world just isn't that simple
Hey thanks for the video it may not seem like much but I’ve been watching your videos for two years and I’ve learned the safety for freediving and took a class with some instructors and when I got interested in freediving you were actually the first channel that I watched and made big impacts on my freediving for the better. So that is for all that you’ve done because you are a motivation to me and your information kept me safe in the water so keep up the great work
Thank you so much for this, it's incredibly informative and simplifies a lot of the concepts. Been planning to take a course for sometime now but I can't help but dive on my own till it can be arranged and such videos are very useful. Thank you again :)
Great video! I was taught a 2 sec inhale 2 second hold, 10 sec exhale. Are used to get upset with myself when I wouldn’t follow the breathing precisely as talk to me but instead breathe according to how I felt. But now listening to this video, I feel I am allowed more flexibility. Thank You 🎉
Interesting. I free dived for 20 years before I discovered FD training. At 81 I just got a pacemaker. Had a bad experience last year in Bahamas. Cruising at 30 ft I had to vomit, raced to surface and went into extreme hyperventilation while gagging to puke. Finally calmed down and recovered. Dove another week with no problems but did not push out of my comfort zone. Recently noticed my fitness at gym was deteriorating so went to cardiologist, long story short arteries are good but electric circuits bad, thus pacemaker. Back at gym feeling great. Looking forward to getting back in the water when I can. Too old to run our boat offshore so opportunities are diminishing. I believe there are others who FD with pacemakers. BTW - don't be too proud of your bradycardia. Extreme breath holds and extreme bradycardia kills brain cells.
Thanks for sharing your story Stanley! It's quite inspiring and I hope i'm still as active in the water when I'm your age. Breath holding definitely kills brain cells but it seems these days that everything does and given that I don't drink alcohol, smoke or play any impact sports that I can use up my quota of brain cells freediving :)
Thanks for the video, I have done a course and didn't get taught this in as much detail and as easily to understand! I now realise I have been hyperventilating during statics and this video was very helpful!
Jethro Vale thanks so much! Every instructor will teach their own version and sometimes instructors opt to not overwhelm students with too much info :)
All right...gonna check my ears and then dive course. That was the plan and still it is ! I'll come and visit you at some point. Dive safe, never dive alone.
Thanks for another great video Adam! If we're aiming at the same gas exchange rate, why not just breathe normally? Is it for the relaxation? Does such controlled breathing really give you more relaxation than normal breathing? Another question: do I use this breathing in between the holds in a table training, e.g., static?
Yes you can just breathe normally but I'll tell you what...first master the controlled breathing and then we will talk at great length about other breathe ups etc in Bali :) when making a public video for the internet my main goal is safety for all divers and not always maximum performance
Thanks for your videos. I am just doing a snorkeling course with an instructor. He is a nice guy and teaches us a lot, mainly about safety, which indeed is important. But your videos are a very welcome compliment to this course. Keep on!
Thanks so much! Sounds like you're enjoying the course :) that makes me happy :) the ocean is getting smaller and smaller these days so I imagine we'll dive together soon enough
Can’t get enough of your videos Mate! Absolutely love what you're doing and so Inspirational, I’ve just started my own Spearfishing/fishing channel based on The Great Barrier Reef.
Hi Adam, really love your videos and the level of detail that you go into. I've been eagerly awaiting your video on Recovery Breathing (which you teased at the end of this). Scouring RUclips, I've found virtually no info on Recovery Breathing. Come take a bite of that sweet, sweet monopoly on recovery breathing videos! You'll stand atop of them all, and the freediving world will thank you. Hope you'll consider doing it soon. Thanks!
@@weebrahim I believe it's because I'm a journalist and there are different rules for verification. Also, I host videos on other channels (Wired, Gizmodo) that get a lot of views/subscribers for them. I'm just guessing, though. It just appeared one day.

Thanks mate, that was something new for me! Now I see what I was doing wrong. Don't do deep dives (more then 40m) alone, but only shallower (up to 30m). Safety is always on. And I need few days of diving to get to these depths. So... Really appreciate it.
Hi Adam, love your video. When i'm snorkeling and adjust pressure on my ears after going deeper in the water I feel like i'm about to black out, so i have to get back up. Even when i'm not under water for that long, is there something i can do about this?
Billy Nectar there are many things that could be going on and I'm not qualified to make any medical assessment so the only thing I can really say is that if you are equalising too forcefully it could cause this to happen
+Billy Nectar Try to equalise using the pressure from your tongue instead of your lungs. It is also recommended to get a doctor check your respiratory system and heart condition, for more assurance. Dive safe!
My dad use to do free dive/spear fishing in Cuba. He showed my brothers and me when I was 13, and I'm the oldest. I have forgotten about the details of blacking out. Thanks for the reminder.
Hey Adam, Great VJO mate, I've been doing it all wrong.... I've been slowly progressing over the past few months, starting to push 30M so i'm glad i watched your video now. When i get back to australia i'll look up an instructor. Jesse
Yep we've had some awesome dives here in Vanuatu and New Cal. Hopefully will be doing some sweet wreck dives in the next week or two, Wheel house at 16 M and sea floor at 26 M. Check out our channel mate, maybe we could get you onboard for a trip?
Awesome tips, man. Many thanks. I am a Spearo who has basically just gone at it through sheer will and just the basic fundamentals of free diving. It's time I up my game with a practice regimen. Your videos are going to be a great help!
Hi Adam, I took a free diving, level one, course several years ago and have not done a lot of free diving since except in a pool doing dynamic apnea underwater laps. With regards to you breathing up process 5 seconds in in 10 seconds out, in my practice I have been starting my breath ups at about 3 in 6 out and then slowly increasing that pattern over a period of several minutes to 10 in 20 out as I become more and more relaxed. I don't feel any urge to breath during the 20 second exhale, in fact I feel like the more relaxed I get the longer I could go maybe 15/30. Is this counter productive? Would I actually get a longer breath hold/dynamic apnea swim, if I keep to the 5 second 10 second pattern? Thanks.
the thing with the breathe up is that Its really just there to make usre you dont hyperventilate. Breathe up's dont really extend breath hold time or anything like that. That's why I like to keep them as simple as possible. It sounds like what you're doing is a little too complicated with room for error and the ability to start your different dives with a different amount of C02. The goal is to always have the same amount of C02 :)
Does your fitness level and/or VO2 max play a role in breath holding? I’m super fit from being a competitive cyclist but I don’t seem to be better than any of my friends who are closer to being averagely fit guys
Thank you Adam ! New to your channel and so very excited that we found you. We live in Florida and would love to start free diving more often...great video! Looking forward to seeing more! - Ashley from Adventure Encounters
I started holding my breath when I saw the girl in the thumbnail. She didn't show up in the actual video btw so I guess I can start breathing again now.
Hi Adam, new subscriber but have seen you on the LaVagabond channel. Been messing about with holding my breath for years as a swimmer and loved the idea of free diving but been too busy to really get into it. Anyways at the tender age of 63 I've signed up for a course and plan on giving it my best shot to see how I find it. Love you're vids and you're easy going attitude. Roll on 2023
Thank you Adam for all your tutorials. I find them very clear and accurate. I have taken two courses of freediving and i am a second degree level apnea diver but every now on i like to listen to other people of this community for different and either same opinions. And yours is quite good. As someone has already said down here: you're quite a Teacher!
Getting in spear fishing. I can hold my breath for about 2 minutes just sitting down although I've never trained or tried other than yesterday but I also have more muscle than the average guy, I wonder how negative that will effect holding my breath. *untrained 4 to 5 minutes?!?! God I struggle with 2 lol
hahahha that's just what the body can do- but most people will stop earlier due to the discomfort. At a recreational level your muscle wont effect you negatively
Adam, thank you so much for such a great tutorial. You make it so simple to follow and understand. Trying to pass the minute mark for me seemed so painful. Worked on technique over an hour time frame. I was amazed that I was easily passing the minute mark. I went to 1:10 then 1:20. I maxed out at 1:40. Where was this video when I was in my 20s. Never too late.
Good video mate. You point your point across very well and you didn’t deliver your script in a monotone voice like I’ve seen some do. Thanks for the info mate but I’m afraid I’m a land lover so I’ll leave the free diving to experts like yourself especially the video as I love watching people free dive.
Great video again! I saw Pros do some form of "packing" as the very last thing before the dive. Is that considered hyperventilating as well? And is it really that usefull? Thanks!
Hi, Adam: I watched this whole video all the way through while I was eating a nice breakfast. I hope you are having a great weekend! Breathing is a nice subject! John
Man this was great info. Going to work in Maldives for one month and scuba is so ridiculously expensive so I won't be doing that as much as I would like. Thinking of starting freediving and this got me interested more on it. Thank you. Gonna watch more of your videos...
Hey man I came to see the girl in the thumbnail..someone tell me where she is. I am a snorkeler, not a free diver. So I didn't watch the whole video, sorry😎🏊♂️
Your video was very helpful. I found no urge to breathe and had no dizziness with the 5 in, 10 out for 2 minutes. I might manage to make the leap from scuba to free diving one day.
One of those memories that has stuck with me forever is free diving in a Colombian reef and looking up from the near the bottom and seeing a giant iridescent tornado of thousands of blue fish above me. Free diving is truly a wonderful experience.
First impression was quite wrong..I watched your videos (other & this one) and can say you are quite a teacher! Keep your ground channel and breath :) longer :) very positive, helpful, interesting and original. I would continue watching and would recommend to a friend I am diving with.
is so cool what you do with those video clips for all the free divers.... jeah and thank you. i ll be back soon in the amazing sport of freediving.... and will be able to attend a course with you... i m really looking forward. greetings from germany to you your girl. claus

Jesse
ah that's awesome Jesse, well you've been doing it wrong but you're still diving to 30m so that's awesome! :)
Yep we've had some awesome dives here in Vanuatu and New Cal. Hopefully will be doing some sweet wreck dives in the next week or two, Wheel house at 16 M and sea floor at 26 M. Check out our channel mate, maybe we could get you onboard for a trip?
Nice bro! That looks sick! If you want to email me adam.thomas.stern@gmail.com we could start chatting and line something up! :)
Awesome tips, man. Many thanks. I am a Spearo who has basically just gone at it through sheer will and just the basic fundamentals of free diving. It's time I up my game with a practice regimen. Your videos are going to be a great help!
Thanks so much! I'm stoked you find them helpful :)
Brilliant brother. Thanx a mill. Been doing this for a while and it works good. Thanx.
Thank you :) so happy it's working!

Anyone start holding their breath? 1:01
hahahaha I hope so!
3:30, but then again I've taken a free diving course! Excellent video, by the way.
I started holding my breath when I saw the girl in the thumbnail. She didn't show up in the actual video btw so I guess I can start breathing again now.
Yeah 1min 38 I think I may have to look into a course as it looks amazing to be so deep underwater with all the wildlife for so long.

I think you should add the english subtitle to help people who can't follow your fast speaking, but for all are clear and so helpful
I would love to but i'm not sure how much work that would involve!!!
But during pool training, how to breath between laps so i can easily take a full deep breath repeatedly?
This is my issue too, with spearfishing
Hi Adam, new subscriber but have seen you on the LaVagabond channel. Been messing about with holding my breath for years as a swimmer and loved the idea of free diving but been too busy to really get into it. Anyways at the tender age of 63 I've signed up for a course and plan on giving it my best shot to see how I find it. Love you're vids and you're easy going attitude. Roll on 2023
What brand of snorkel and fins do you recommend? Thanks
Amazing technique, really works
This guy sounds so much better when he holds his breath...
EPH Lifestyle, inc no you didnt XD
Haha savage. He's annoying af.
@@ingwiafraujaz3126 @11.47 His Rottweiler Arthur agrees apparently lol.
Thanks so much!!!!!
Never too late at all! thanks so much :) I really appreciate the feed back and those are nice breath holds! nice work :)
"We're basically cucumbers with anxiety." Ahahahaaha!!
So funny isn't it?
AAAAAmazing!! Thank you so much for a quality video!
Good video mate. You point your point across very well and you didn’t deliver your script in a monotone voice like I’ve seen some do. Thanks for the info mate but I’m afraid I’m a land lover so I’ll leave the free diving to experts like yourself especially the video as I love watching people free dive.
Thanks buddy :) One day we'll convert you though! we'll make a freediver out of you yet!
Instructions unclear, I became a fish.
hahaha objective achieved ;)
Your presentation and personality is supewr! Serious yet funny and entertaining!
thanks so much! :)
Great video again!
I saw Pros do some form of "packing" as the very last thing before the dive. Is that considered hyperventilating as well? And is it really that usefull?
Thanks!
Philipp Al thanks Phil! It's not hyperventilation but it's definitely not recommended! I'm going to make a video about it very soon :)
Thanks. Cant wait!
I used to think:"Freediving? Bleh. Whats the big deal?" Adam you opened my eyes. Thanks for the epiphany, Respect!
Lol i love how agressive he is about finishing the video
I hate it actually. Annoying af.
Brilliant video, very informative and not boring in the slightest. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more videos.
thanks so much Paul :) I really appreciate that
"CUCUMBERS WITH ANXIETY " LMAO

Hi, Adam: I watched this whole video all the way through while I was eating a nice breakfast. I hope you are having a great weekend! Breathing is a nice subject! John
Thanks so much John :) I appreciate that :)
@@AdamFreediver Thanks!
2 minutes? 20 minutes more like!
Hahaha, excellent video sexy man! Who was that beautiful tan dog, what breed is it? Is it a Rhodesian?
Daan Verhoeven Hahahaha 😘😘😘😘 he's a ridgeback cross American bull dog :) I have an armoury of puppies at my house now!
Man this was great info. Going to work in Maldives for one month and scuba is so ridiculously expensive so I won't be doing that as much as I would like. Thinking of starting freediving and this got me interested more on it. Thank you. Gonna watch more of your videos...
Thanks so much! So glad it was helpful :)
Hey man I came to see the girl in the thumbnail..someone tell me where she is. I am a snorkeler, not a free diver. So I didn't watch the whole video, sorry😎🏊♂️

Great video, I am scuba diver and I was so curious about how it works with freediving. Thank you for enlightening dear
Very very welcome :)
clickbait matey..wheres the honey with the peach ? lol
Draw them in with girls, keep em with solid information ;)
Dats nott fair. Lol
Your video was very helpful. I found no urge to breathe and had no dizziness with the 5 in, 10 out for 2 minutes. I might manage to make the leap from scuba to free diving one day.
Thank you :) that's awesome! You'll love freediving :)

I love how enthusiastic you are in your videos... Love watching it.. Btw Im a newbie freediver 😊😊😊
thanks so much! it's easy to be enthusiastic when your whole life is just freediving :)
I know.. It just so happen that you know some of our mentors from Sawum Freedivers based in Cebu, Philippines. 😊😊
One of those memories that has stuck with me forever is free diving in a Colombian reef and looking up from the near the bottom and seeing a giant iridescent tornado of thousands of blue fish above me. Free diving is truly a wonderful experience.
A lot of info to take in being new to this. But im going spear fishing for the first time soon and i really appreciate the help here. Got my subscribe
Love it! Glad I found your channel from it being suggested and yes I watched till the end😉
Amazing :) stoked you enjoyed it :)
@@AdamFreediver still can't believe how incredible those shots were in your video with the sardines! Absolutely amazing!
First impression was quite wrong..I watched your videos (other & this one) and can say you are quite a teacher! Keep your ground channel and breath :) longer :) very positive, helpful, interesting and original. I would continue watching and would recommend to a friend I am diving with.
thanks so much! that's so nice to hear :)

Claus Lage thanks so much!!! I'm looking forward to diving with you :)
Extremely good video Adam! Best one about the subject, thank you so much!
you're so welcome :) thank you!
Dear Adam, excellent video and so informative. I would like to hear your opinion on breathing devices which help you to strengthen your lungs/breathe etc, i.e. POWERbreathe?
Is it worth it? Thank you so much for your time
I love how I have to watch 10 mins of this guy and sit through 5 ads just to watch what we all came here to watch
