I have a 504 plan because of my social anxiety

I had IEP and 504 plan all throughout school. I have ADHD/ADD and very bad social anxiety, I felt discriminated a lot, especially by my teacher's. I always felt like I just didn't fit in with anybody.

A 504 Plan is better than an IEP in many ways. For one, the accommodations in a regular classroom throughout high school could be greatly beneficial to students that want a smooth transition into college, knowing which accommodations they should seek once in college

Are teachers typically told when a student has a 504 and what accommodations they are required to provide for that student in their classroom.I have a 504 that states I get extra time on tests and some teachers think that I only want extra time because I’m being lazy not because I process things slower.

I’m sorry you are being treated that way. To answer your question, yes, teachers should be informed about your 504 plan and the accommodations that are in place for you.

I'm so sorry to hear that. My 11 yr old is dyslexic and gets treated badly by his teachers. I'm thinking of homeschooling him because of this. I pray you get through school with the best education you deserve!

I think 504 is for a physical disabilty not mental, although there is a fine line. A phycial issue can cause a mental issue, like being anemic, which will cause your blood not to be able to carry enough oxygen which makes one mentally not up to par.

Hi jackyyy cruz, Sorry for the delay in seeing your question. 504 plans are formal plans that schools develop to give kids with disabilities the support they need. That covers any condition that limits daily activities in a major way.
What this means is that some kids with ADHD might have a 504 plan while others might not. Since 504 plans generally provide accommodations to the students, if your brother doesn't need them the school might not feel the need to provide them to him.
As for yourself, you should start with your parents about why you have a 504 plan. You can also talk to your school counselor or a trusted teacher if you don't feel comfortable talking to your parents. But remember that they won't be able to talk to you about your brother, only about yourself. You can learn more in this article "What is a 504 Plan?" u.org/3xrb4dz
      We hope this helps.

@@suebrose No you can have 504 plans for ADHD as well as physical issues. The mind is a part of the body anyway. When your brain is not functioning well it should not have any extra stigma attached to that than if your anemic. Also it sounds like that situation anemic would effect one's brain function anyways.

My daughter is on a 504 plan due to mild cerebral palsy they haven’t given her Occupational therapy services in 2 months is there anything I can do?

    • @UnderstoodOrg
      @UnderstoodOrg  2 года назад

Hi Gardenia Parra, Thanks for your question. Your first step should be to contact the principal or the 504 plan coordinator. Try and see if you can find out why the services aren't being provided and negotiate a return to those services. If that doesn't work you may need to go into mediation or a legal hearing. To start this process you would write to the school district asking for an impartial hearing. If you get to that point, you should considering looking for an advocate or lawyer versed in special education law.
      We hope this helps.

Hello sparkle gem productions, Thank you for your question. We reached out to an expert to help and here's what she said:
      Hi,
Thanks for reaching out to us at Understood with this question. Unfortunately, this is not a simple either-or question/answer. In order to figure out if an IEP or 504 plan would be better for you, it will be important to go through the evaluation process with your school. The school should review your records (if you have evaluations from outside professionals for your diagnoses those should be provided to the team) and decide if further testing by the school would be helpful to clearly define your strengths and needs to determine what help is needed (u.org/3Aq0Hcg). You should also be an active participant in the process, sharing what works and does not work for you with the team. If the evaluation and review of records show that you qualify for an IEP then a plan can be developed to include the services, supports and interventions you need. Generally, an IEP is more comprehensive and can include the accommodations that might be listed in a 504 plan. If the evaluation does not support the need for an IEP, a 504 plan can be written to include the supports and accommodations you need to function in the general education classroom (u.org/3xrb4dz). If a 504 plan can be designed to include the accommodations you need to function in the mainstream, then that should work for you. Occasionally a student can have both an IEP and a 504 plan (u.org/36bJTYA) if it is determined that the combination will best suit the student’s presenting profile.
The important thing here is that you get the right supports to meet your specific individual needs. The best plan to meet your needs can only be developed after the identification of the specific areas of concern and how they impact your ability to perform in school. You are entitled to support (www.nami.org/Blogs/NAMI-Blog/August-2020/3-Types-of-School-Supports-to-Help-Students-with-Mental-Health-Conditions). The more information that the school intervention team has to identify your strengths and needs, the better able they will be to devise an appropriate plan of action to provide what you need.
I hope that some of this information and the links provided help you work with your school to appropriately identify your needs and design a plan of support to adequately address them. Please feel free to come back to us if we can be of further assistance during your journey with the school. Rayma

Good luck getting on a 504 program in Ohio I live in northwest school district the counselor refused to help me she wouldn't set up a date for me to have a meeting with her then he ended up in Butler tech I went to the counselor there she acted like oh well what do you want me to do so I ended up signing him out and putting online K12 that was the only school that helped me with my son the rest of them did not care I'm told the reason why I had such a hard time for them on a 504 is because they lose funding which is ridiculous a school should not lose funding if a child needs an IEP or a 504 it should not be an argument it should be done

    • @andreascott2891

Oh yes I agree. There is not any federal funds you get for 504 services so adding on services could take away from the general budget or adding work onto already overworked teachers. If we had lower classroom ratios, by increasing school budgets it would increase educational quality for everyone the most.

Hi Jesenia Agudelo, Thanks for your question. We're glad you found us. Both an IEP and a 504 plan can help students who are struggling in school. There are some similarities and some differences between them. You can learn more in the article "The difference between IEPs and 504 plans" u.org/3nKRncY
