I bought a pair of Johnston and Murphy cap toe burgundy shoes, and followed your instructions for shine. I'm in sales. An older gentleman just complimented me on my shoes and was very impressed that I took the time to make my shoes look professional. Thank you!
Beautiful job, Heath! I also appreciate you contacting the customer about the extra need of the welts. Being in the service business myself, I try to install that in the people with whom I work. Every little stage of our process is an opportunity to let the customer know what's going on. It's just a better way of doing business and it's nice to see that others have that same dedication.
Nice job. Worth mentioning is that those old J & Ms are a better quality than most modern J & Ms, and well worth the cost of replacing the sole and the welt.
Martin Tanz Definitely agree! We’re not big fans of the newer stuff J&M is putting out, but just like many other American brands, the older shoes were made much better than the newer ones. These were definitely worth the price of the resole.
@@TrentonHeath I came of age at the end of the great era of American shoe making and sadly, was too young to seriously collect some of those venerable shoes like the J & Ms and Florsheim Imperials. Or even Bostonian for that matter. Fortunately, I live about 15 miles from the Allen Edmonds factory so I have easy access to clearance and factory seconds, and that aside from sneakers, that is pretty much all I buy new these days.
I really enjoyed watching this one. Beautiful job. You made these well worn shoes into a gorgeous work of art. So lovely. They look brand new. Awesome work. 😊
I got a pair of J&M Oxfords at Goodwill for $9.99. I know they are not the best but I only plan on wearing them on Sundays and holidays. I polished them up and put on a mirror shine on the toe caps. They look pretty good. I hope to get a few years out of them.
Very lightly used Brazil-made J&Ms in an oxford with rubberized sole and leather 'welt' or whatever are nice... Local sale of nearly new ones for $17 delivered. The inside and out appear to be soft leather and these were not scarred or abused at all. A very good deal almost as good as like-new Allen Edmonds 'Bradley' model for $15 delivered from a Goodwill auction online ...
When I got my J&M I thought they were my first set of "real, good, lifetime shoes" I'm now eagerly saving up for a pair of carminas and hoping that those will be a lifetime shoe.
I bought a pair of Johnston and Murphy boots around Christmas time. After wearing them half a dozen times they started to rip at the base of the tongue! Returned them and got a pair of Iron Rangers instead, won't be going back to J&M.
Another awesome video!! This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels to watch! High quality video and high quality content! Keep up the good work!
“Threaded nail” is that the same as “ring shanked” nails? Those are a bear to get out of flooring. Thank you guys for introducing me to Goodyear welted shoes and there care. My Thursdays also thank you. 😁
When J&M used to make decent shoes I bought some in 1980 working my way through university. I actually got them through Marshal Fields (now Macy’s) where I worked part time. Sent them back to get resoled but they came back smaller. I mean how do they mess up their own shoes?
Nice job, in 1984 when I was a suit and tie man the entire job you did for your customer I paid 65 dollars for. 39th street just east of 2nd Avenue in Manhattan NYC, the shoe maker closed his doors in 1986 when his rent went up. The shop was replaced by a restaurant which closed approximately eight months later. I'm guessing your customer paid approximately $300 for the rebuild of his shoes.
Great job on this major restoration. I wonder if you are able to tell me what a restoration like this would cost. If possible, can you provide two prices, one price without replacing the welt, and another price including the cost of replacing the welt. You and your partner do a great job producing your videos. All done with very good content and presentation style. Nice work! I enjoy watching and learning from your videos.
Holaaa saludos desde Mexicali b. C. Como saber el tiempo en que se fabricaron. Mis zapatos johnston murpy?tengo un par en muy buen estado y muy bonitos hechos en italy.
are newer J&M(last 5 years) worth restoring/resoling with better material? They are always going on sale at dillards, so just curious if better to restore or just replace.
Johnston & Murphy is the correct spelling. They are great middle to upper end shoes while many other brands are likely better, the value decreases it seems the more expensive they get. What's more, not every shoe repair shop uses the good sole and heel materials and in many cases, the customer has no choice in those as the shop offers only "sole and heel" replacements vs. low grade or higher grade. Some of them are thin and/or lower grade and won't last as long as the originals. I have several 30+ year old J&M's and they still perform and look above the competition. Be thankful we still have shoe repair shops around...buy good shoes and fix them as long as they can be and save ton's of money while wearing a comfortable shoe each time vs. "this brand feels different" every time you switch shoes or buy new ones. A fair supply of good shoes in your closet will ultimately save you money and give better results in the long run.
I just had a question. I was thinking on buying some Allen Edmonds on ebay but I have never worn dress shoes and I was wondering if I use my sneaker size it would be the equivalent on using dress shoe size? I know for boots you have to down size between 1/2 to 1 inch depending in the width. Any suggestions?
Wow, I had no idea you put saddle soap on that heavy...little water too? I have same pair of shoes, and was worried soap would get the holes/design on wing tips...Do i have to use black polish after, or can I just buff the saddle?... soap?
0Nebula0 Yep, you definitely want to work up a good lather. I think the video made it look like there wasn’t much water, but it was nice and soapy. :) If you get soap in the brogue holes, a q-tip does a good job getting it out.
Not all shoe shops tapper the heel so that it doesn't rock forward and back with the sole which likely ads to that click. A good shoe repair will tapper the heel so that both sole and heel meet the surface at the same time.
What's up. I have a pair of shoes that I paid a few hundred dollars. I purchased them before I had knowledge and they came cement constructed. Can the outersoles be replaced when they wear out? Thanks in advance
Asdrubal Ruiz It depends upon the materials. Are they leather soled shoes or rubber soles? More than likely, they can be. We see a lot of cemented shoes come into our shop, and many of them can be resoled.
Hey man please do not edit out the part where remove the broken parts, when you put the cork, the threads, the lining on those bottom leathers. Those are good parts.
I am huge fan and love these videos, but this resole fundamentally changed the look of the original shoe. I am not a cobbler, or a shoe expert, but for me the appealling aspect of J&M or blake construction is that you don't see the stiching that holds the sole to the upper. They look great if you are going for that retro gunboat style.
Jon Walker Hi! Yes, we can do double oak soles. It would be $30 additional. If you have any further questions or specifics, please feel free to shoot us an email. Thanks!
@@TrentonHeath Where did you learn shoe crafting? I read on your website you started the business in 2012 after leaving other careers. Many cobblers seem to have learned the craft from family.
Jon Walker Heath has been making shoes for years as a side hobby. After we bought out, what was then an old, run down shoe repair store, from the previous owner, we worked alongside him for a little while. The rest of it has just been on the job training and honing our craft over thousands of resoles/shines/etc.
A thought just occurred to me as I was watching you shape and polish the sides of the heel - why not have a vibrating horsehair brush, much like the facial brushes all over the place? Electric toothbrush, electric face brush, next comes an electric shoe brush! I just googled it. It's a thing, that I guess people just don't use.
These guys concentrate on the soles of the shoe alone, and really don't pay much attention to the uppers, save some polish. Get those fucking creases out of the shoes with some shoe trees and wetting the leather! Not a "total" restoration...

i love oxford and derbies...
Excellent !
I had a pair of these redone by a cobbler they unfortunately came back wider and longer to the point I could not wear them
You do very good work, what is the cost for the work you did?
With the new welt, heel blocks and soles, these shoes will be a family heirloom.
Oh man, I wanted to see the new welt going on; I've never seen that before.
I’m still wondering how often and what distances these shoes had been through... And also why wait until this bad then decide to send in for fixing
This time we can easely coclude they are better then before.
Those soles Pop.
When you say that the heel block is like cardboard. do you mean like particle board like Masonite?
Wow amazing

Its always interesting to discover the real quality (or cheapness....) of a brand.... Those paper heels are uncomfortable actually.
That’s one of the things we really want to dive into on this channel...showing folks the insides of shoe brands and which ones are actually made well.
What do I need to do to learn your craft?
What is the background music that you're using?
I have old Johnston Murphy shoes can you help to restore ?
It looked like the owner chose the house leather over JRR. Was that for reasons of cost only, or was there a cobbler reason for the choice?
Mark Dunaevsky Most of the time it’s all customers choices. We make our recommendations, but it’s their money. :)
Another great video 👍 Just a quick question, no (wood, steel, or fiber glass) shank?
Roger Lu Thank you! These J&M’s had a fiberglass shank. You can see it around the 5:25 mark. It’s hidden under the cork afterwards.
With that particular rubber heel, does the shoe still retain the “clicking” sound on hard floors?
These particular heel pads are a softer but very durable rubber by Goodyear. They’re fairly quiet heel pads.
Not all shoe shops tapper the heel so that it doesn't rock forward and back with the sole which likely ads to that click. A good shoe repair will tapper the heel so that both sole and heel meet the surface at the same time.
Does the owner of these shoes wear them everyday for years to wear through the sole like that? Would that happen if he alternated different pairs?
What's up. I have a pair of shoes that I paid a few hundred dollars. I purchased them before I had knowledge and they came cement constructed. Can the outersoles be replaced when they wear out? Thanks in advance

Even though they’re J&M’s, as a customer I would have wanted JR soles and heels.....just a preference I guess 🤷🏼♂️
How much it cost for that replacement?
How come you didn’t use a shoe tree to help with the overall look of the shoe? That looked good but it could have looked so much better.
Now his grandson will be able to wear these shoes
How much does it cost to restore my J&M shoes
I am huge fan and love these videos, but this resole fundamentally changed the look of the original shoe. Wait, if the customer eventually replaces the uppers, are they still his grandfather’s shoes?
Replacing the uppers is called buying a new pair of shoes
