  • This video by Michael Looke, a 3rd Dan Shotokan Karate-do, goes through a number of defensive strategies and counter attack methods to a Masashi Geri (roundhouse kick).
He demonstrates a number of techniques including:
    - bridging the gap (to reduce the power of the opponents kick)
    - deflecting the kick and counteracting
    - capturing the kick and turing it into a spinning throw
    - passing, resulting in a deadly spinning knife strike
    - a strategy to draw the opponent into attacking in a particular way which opens them up to a counter attack
The techniques demonstrated, and principles discussed, are applicable to other styles of martial arts.

1:42 , true, after the kick, the guy on the left side stands only on one feet = the guy on the right side have all the opportunity to destroy his enemy any way he wants :)

Hello Sir. Trying to get past the poor and embarrassing execution of the technique, I ask the following question: what tactical categories do the combinations presented fall into? Thx

    Dear authors and viewers,
Unfortunately, most you -tube contributors, viewers can be from all walks of life, therefore presentations should be graded at least into three levels. Warningfor them: Mawashi geri or roundhouse kick is rather difficult to which level it goes, head body or lower parts. or can be transford into direct or hook kicks , when performed by an good fighter.
Beginners mostly are able to react only after a situation, seldom see and almost never understand what is going on.
Those with more practice are able to match the speed, so can act simultaneusl, but at angles not directly.
Experienced fighters can do what the author have shown, because the yare above the previous two levels.
Well, teaching is a very difficult job, and teachers can sometimes be called to bear the consequences of showing incomplete information to those over-motivated but untrained young people highly willing to prove their skills!
Again, defending it by running ahead or acting parallelly is only for high-grade practitioners seeing it coming, a beginner never can do.
    Best regards.
Paul, 64, retired instructor of Karate

Sorry but, most ‘street fights’ do NOT incorporate a ‘Mawashi Geri’. A crappy ‘May Geri’, yes! These, and others are ‘Kumite’, mostly.
