    If F1 Beyond the Limit existed in about 1991-1992 and could look that gorgeous on the Mega Drive, it would have been my absolute go-to. It looks so good, like a proper Super Monaco GP upgrade. And it is actually possible to make out that you're running at Suzuka!

      It was indeed the golden age. I was 22 when I bought my SegaCD at launch. Love it and outside of having to replace the drive belt it's still chugging along. I worked as senior editor for VGA Magazine at the time so I got to visit Sega many times.
      The teams back then making games were tiny, sometimes 3 to 10 people. Such a great time in gaming.

    The team that developed Cadillacs and Dinos, Rocket Science Interactive, was a bit of an oddity when it came to developers. I remember an article from (venerable and defunct) Next Generation magazine, detailing an interview they did with them:
    Their attitude towards developing was like that of being a rock star. They took the reporters into their offices, bragged about how cool it was, the modern approach, decor, etc. They also showed storyboards, posters, cardboard models of vehicles and promotional material for Loadstar: Legend of Tully Bodine, loud and proud of their production values. Then the NG reporters said "That's very cool, guys, but where is the game?" and the devs just turned to look at each other, dumbfounded. There's a reason why their games were commercial failures.

      The arcade version was never ported to consoles, maybe only recently via emulation on PS4, PC etc, if, instead of this horrible FMV thing, we got the arcade game, that would be so awesome. This game is much better than Final Fight, while not as classic.

    The Formula 1 game on the Sega CD finally gave us graphics comparable to the arcade shots seen in the infamous magazine ad for the Super Monaco Grand Prix port on the Sega Genesis where the gameplay was still fine but it lacked the visual pizazz of the trackside scaling scenery of the Superscaler original game, especially important for the Monaco track itself since it's a city street circuit passing by many buildings but you just got empty green scenery in the Genesis version with only the tunnel to remind you that you're in Monaco.
    Since that Formula 1 game proved the Sega CD could handle scaling in a racing game quite competently, I'm surprised they didn't try porting either Super Monaco GP or OutRun (or maybe even OutRunners) to Sega CD.
    I think the EB Games in the photo at 0:27 is the exact location I go by the most, Billings Bridge Shopping Centre in Ottawa. It has the same tiles and the decals by the door are in the exact same order and placement as in my own photos of the same location.

    I've never seen or heard of Star Wars Chess before. It looks just like a mod of a NES game called "Battle Chess". Said game replaced regular pieces for the actual character they represent, with the same animation everytime two pieces "enter in conflict". Also, you can not only disable animation but change the pieces to regular staunton ones. I used to play it a lot, since it was the only one I found where I could set a level I could win.

    • @georgeweeman9057

      Loved Battle Chess! The 3DO also had a port of the game with enhanced visuals.

  • @VirtuaIceMan
    @VirtuaIceMan 3 года назад +6

    Beyond The Limit had fantastic modes: one where your try to recreate real life events (bookended by video clips of the real life 1993 season) and the championship mode where you meet team personnel and all driver changes happened at the same time as real life. Heck, the Ligier team even had one car with unique livery at the Japanese Grand Prix, just as it did in real life! A shame that the handling is so stiff, plus the overtake button allows you to easily win most tracks (UK version at least). You could unlock a video player at the end of the game and watch all the real life clips in one place!
    Star Wars Chess' biggest issue was that the 3D board is at a funny angle, making it hard to see where your pieces are. I played it most in the optional top-down view. There's a PC version of this game too.

    • @barbarjinxed
      @barbarjinxed 3 года назад +1

      @@Gatorade69 I think the original was over hyped, it was on the front cover of the official Sega magazine claiming it was a Street Fighter 2 beater, but in reality it was just a bit clunky and nowhere near as intuitive controls as Street Fighter. I think it being an exclusive towards the end of the life of the 16-bit generation meant not as many people took the time to learn how to play it properly, myself included, and just stuck with the established Street Fighter.
      The CD sequel version however had much better animations, gore and a great soundtrack, but sold poorly due to a limited audience and next to no marketing.

    Poor Sega CD, if they really made more appealing exclusive content, taking advantage of the unlimited space compared to carts it had, much more sound channels, more hardware to add even better visuals, instead doing of lazy ports and bad FMV content.

      @ammonitida I have a bit of nostalgia for Mad Dog McCree and some specific memories with this game back then, a few FMV games were a nice and different way to experience games, but they went too far with this, and a lot of Genesis ports with CD audio, FMV content, etc, there was much more they could do with the hardware.

    Good video Sega Lord. I'd enjoy seeing more of these. I got really excited to see Cadillacs and Dinosaurs my initial thoughts similar to yours that it would be akin to the excellent Final Fight port. But no, just a stinky FMV game. How disappointing. I only recently played Radical Rex and I enjoyed it. It's not the best but I think it completely embodies the 90s grabbing so much from what was popular at the time (skateboards, dinosaurs, platformers, attitude, etc) that I'm almost surprised Rex didn't say cowabunga or eat my shorts. Again, very fun video and I hope we get to see more.

    Lawnmower Man was a strangely delightful game. I was amazed by it's "cutting edge" graphics, but the game is too long, and you just end up doing the same things over and over again. Back in the day, I was big into the FMV games, and thats why later, I traded mine in for a 3DO. I think fondly of my Sega CD collection though, and still play them today via an emulator.
