Jacob Perry oh man so that was you who I saw yesterday near Times Square. I was like why the fuck that dude is walking like that with a big ass fan up front. Thought you were hot. I get it now.
Anyone reading this don't ever wrap the headphones. Its better to let them curl into a ball than wrap them because the wrapping method tears the internal lining and makes them go out faster.
The over under method being tangle free is not necessarily true. If done correctly, it's fine. However, if you accidentally allow one end to go thru the Center of the coil when you start unravelling, you will end up with one knot for every second wrap applied. This method is good for mic cables and extension cords because you can plug one end into the other, and therefore keep this from happening.
Add a couple more methods: 1) koss portapro. They are designed to be able to collapse and wrap the cord around them 2) Zip your earbuds. If you can get a long zipper, there is a way to sew in your buds to make it form a pouch! Look up "Zip your earbuds" on instructables
Hi LifeHacker, I love this video and I find it really helpful. But can I suggest something? I can't find the best way to wrap chargers properly, if you could make one lots of people can make use of it. Thanks :)
I've been doing the last method for years. The best method. And with my tools pack, elastic straps to hold so many different wires and USB sticks, adapters and so on. I also put a compact bluetooth headset through one of the loops to hold it in place. Will be using that in 2 days, helps so much when travelling.
I use the hook-em-horns method, but once the main wrap and the centre wrap are done, I pass a loop of the loose end of the cord through an end loop, then over the top, and bring it back down to the centre on the first side. Pull tight and it doesn't come undone. If you know what you're doing, it can be untied quickly. It can also be used to shorten the cord when that's necessary and the boss isn't looking ;-D
Best method for me: Over-under Hooks 1. Perform the Over-Under method but leave a length of cord unlooped at the end. 2. Use the remaining cord to wrap around the looped cord and insert it under and through one of the ends of the loops as in the end of the hook and horns method.
last one makes sharp circular knot making the cables inside increase the chances of it ripping the copper cabbles inside. Ive done this before and im at my 8th pair and ever since i made my own easy way of doing it its been a year and im doing great with it.
My method does NOT harm the wire, we have been using the same unbalanced/1/4 inch cables for over a year at every gig, not to mention every cable in my house. If you do not tightly coil the knot, there will be no stress on the wire inside. And actually most "audio engineers" just wrap the cord around a large spool...
I keep mine in a small box and just grab the bit where the leads divide, hold it and shake gently, most tangles will just drop out because they are not knots. Continue holding with one hand and untangle any remaining tangles, which will be easier if you don't pull just shake gently.
I like the "figure 8" method, but still find the two earbud wires tangle occasionally. I only hold one earbud wire at first, letting the other one dangle and wrap with the connector end. Then unwrap it by holding the connector end and letting the bundle unwrap by its own weight. No tangling at all.
O. KAY. Look. Some of the videos you guys do are just genius. But, wow. This is one of those times when intelligent people way over complicate a simple issue. I've used a SMALL alligator clip on my earphones for YEARS. They come in different sizes. Use either the smallest size and wrap the cord on one side of the overall loop, or use the second to smallest size, and you can bundle both sides in a figure eight-like compact configuration. Fits right in your pocket. Or a rubber band for Godsake.
what happened to the method where you fold your earbuds in halves, then put the end without the earbuds into a chapstick cap? its incredibly fast, very compact, and works every time
in stead of wasting time after ur done playing ur music u can waste the same amount of time getting the headphones straight BEFORE u listen to music.. This method works for me..
This is not audio cable friendly. Yours will broke in no time. The only ones that is right is the over under method. I dont recommend using other ways than that. And please get some bag for your earphones.
I'm going to try the hook 'em horns. I keep a spare pair of headphones in my pocket, so this will be handy for them. I don't like untangling headphones in freezing temperatures.
Is The Onion's Trouble Hacker a parody of Lifehacker? I almost got the feeling I was watching Trouble Hacker when the cord was being wound around the iPhone.
Note: if you have bud headphones, DONT ravel them tightly around something. Its suggested to not even ravel bud headphones because the wires are weak and easy to mess up by even just raveling them tightly around something. If you do ravel them, make atleast an inch of loose slack.
I also go thru new in ears every 2 months virtually. My problem is not storing them but when I use them; I usually bend the base of the cord in the jack when I put them in my pocket to listen music. Just went thru a decent pair of Samsungs, I think I'll just start buying cheap ones and expect them to bust after a couple of months.
***** Buy from Argos and take back when broke or just lie when worn out...I've been taking my Beats back for years...new pair every year for nothing, just keep the guarantee.
we are all just hashing back and forth I have an android and I like the iPhone better were just lightly barking. If I thought I was truly offending someone I would stop completely.
STEP ONE: LAY ***EARBUDS*** ON FLAT SURFACE. STEP TWO: FOLD ENTIRE CABLE IN HALF. REPEAT STEP TWO UNTIL CABLE LENGTH IS AS DESIRED. STEP THREE: PUT EARBUDS IN A DRAWER OR IN YOUR POCKET OR SOME SHIT. STEP FIVE: Turn off caps lock.
@TheJuggernauter They are fucking stock earphones, what do you expect? The Earpods are probably the best stock earphones ever. V-Moda has Kevlar reinforced cables, that's a technology Val Kolton (owner and CEO) uses.
But... soon in the future their will be no cables, not cables for anything. Electricity will be wireless, and planet earth will be 100% green. haha Keep up the good work hermanos.
my left ear enjoyed this
Saw Spork glad to know i didn't lose my mind... started to think my headphones broke during an anti-headphone breaking video.

Holy Jesus the hook-em-horns is the easiest fucking thing on earth this is fucking life changing

Yessss, I was searching this up on Google, but I didn't get any good solutions and now you guys made a video on this topic. :DD

Man! you guys are something else. Thanks, I will definitely forget and then blame you for my wires becoming tangled.
Hook em horns took me only once to learn. Love it!
Lifehacker, earbuds is NOT the samething as headphones
last one makes sharp circular knot making the cables inside increase the chances of it ripping the copper cabbles inside. Ive done this before and im at my 8th pair and ever since i made my own easy way of doing it its been a year and im doing great with it.
Just don't pull it tight, should be enough
My method does NOT harm the wire, we have been using the same unbalanced/1/4 inch cables for over a year at every gig, not to mention every cable in my house. Yes, a spool is round with NO SHARP CORNERS! In his method there are sharp corners.
I use a bread tie to secure it when not in use and I wrap it around cord while earbuds are in use-- can't even tell it's there.
I keep mine in a small box and just grab the bit where the leads divide, hold it and shake gently, most tangles will just drop out because they are not knots. Continue holding with one hand and untangle any remaining tangles, which will be easier if you don't pull just shake gently.

WOW! that last one was easy, i got it the first try! thanks!
I use the over under, that's the best so far, tangle free and just wrap a rubber band around it and it looks awesome
My left ear enjoyed this :)

why are you people so mad? Its a handy video. Why all the hate?
thank you for teaching me how to use my HEAPHONES
Any tips for over the ear headphones? All these videos only show earbuds.
YEAAH! Also works with white buds. They shud really specify. Missed a trick !!
what happened to the method where you fold your earbuds in halves, then put the end without the earbuds into a chapstick cap? its incredibly fast, very compact, and works every time

Love the name of the Hook em Horns method! \m/
The hook-em-horns is the best it worked first time!
when are people going to learn the diference between headphones and earphones...
This is not audio cable friendly.
Yours will broke in no time.
The only ones that is right is the over under method.
I dont recommend using other ways than that.

Does wrapping them like that damage the headphone? It looks like those methods put a lot of pressure on the headphones' wire. Does that damage it?
Thx so much for making this video 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀!!!!
hook em horns works a treat and is quick and easy....cheers
Which one will make my headphones last the longest?
My old pair lasted almost 3 years but I've always just put it in my pockets which are tight.
The over/under method will.
Loved the last one

Hi this really helped. Thank you.
You make it look so easy....
10/10 Good Video Title
First video I saw by you!
yesyesyes! I was thinking that througout the whole video, works like a charm.
Thank you!
Obrigado cara, aquela técnica da mão (que parece que esta soltando teia do homem aranha) me ajudou!

Notice its only iPhone users that cant tell what to do with headphones
Just stop. Can't you do anything else in your life other than fight with people on the internet? (It hasn't started now, but it will soon).
we are all just hashing back and forth I have an android and I like the iPhone better were just lightly barking. If I thought I was truly offending someone I would stop completely.
Glad to know you understand :) Goodby
dave gale Galaxy's are better...
***** Did you not understand ANYTHING that was said at the top of the replies?
Love the last one
~ 1st World problems!
;)
Thank you... good video.
I use a binder clip instead of wrapping the cord around itself in the Hook-em-horns method.
my hero
The spiderman... I mean the hook-up horns... seems the best method
Music?
life saver ! xD #the last one was the best
You could just leave them in your ears. No tangles. Just plug them into your device. No practice. No monetary cost. Booyah!
duude! just fold it twice and tie a loose knot!? takes no space, its easy and you wont destroy the cable as long as its loose enough.
Make sure you straighten the headphones by lightly pulling on them from the top down before you do this.
Won't wrapping like these reduce the durability of cord?
just use velcro
Really Nice!!!
instead of messing my head off with these tricks i ill rather stick them to my ears 4ever
or buy headphones with a coiled cable?
you make it seem like science!! :P
have adopted this method and find i still get tangilisation upon 'release'.
aaaaah what to do!?!?!
If you have an advert click this 1:00, You're welcome.
what if your earphones have one longer cord?
What is that acinent iphone4
what the bast way to take care of stuff like this
STEP ONE: LAY ***EARBUDS*** ON FLAT SURFACE.
STEP TWO: FOLD ENTIRE CABLE IN HALF.
REPEAT STEP TWO UNTIL CABLE LENGTH IS AS DESIRED.
STEP THREE: PUT EARBUDS IN A DRAWER OR IN YOUR POCKET OR SOME SHIT.
STEP FIVE: Turn off caps lock.
Him: Handy Dandy Bi-
Me: NOTEBOOK- Er Binder Clip. Yeah
i ust wrap my headphone cable around my ipod, put it in my pocket take it out and I never have a problem...
Oh yeah because we all have old credit cards that are cut in half
Wireless earbuds...
Apple-challenge accepted. ;)
The robots and the aliens are so going to enslave us
Thank you!!!
My wire is twisted how do I fix that?
ehh they take a shape of a spring going to ur ears and looks funny and can annoy u, i also think it kinda wears the headphones out over time
Last one is ridiculously easy for any Indian kid who knows how to fly a kite.
Looks like Lifehacker is trying to simplify something thats easy turning it hard.
I wrap mine around a pen using the cap to hold the adapter down
The only time I'm not using my earbuds is in the shower. Literaly
this so helpful thx
@TheJuggernauter They are fucking stock earphones, what do you expect? The Earpods are probably the best stock earphones ever. V-Moda has Kevlar reinforced cables, that's a technology Val Kolton (owner and CEO) uses.
Why not just wrap the headphones around the iPod?
My right ear is jelly of all the sound my left ear is getting
i believe it like puts strain on the jack side
i think that's simplest way. it doesn't tangle, and the wires have no sharp bends.
Here's another life pro tip. Slow the tutorials down and don't time skip so people can follow the tutorial step by step.
But... soon in the future their will be no cables, not cables for anything. Electricity will be wireless, and planet earth will be 100% green. haha Keep up the good work hermanos.
I love how this is such a big proble to everyone but me....
VERY NICE
because it ruins the connector slowly but surely you are breaking it my friend
life hack: buy headphones with the flat untangble cord
They're not ear bud or headphones, they're earphones
Does it really matter
+Internet Yes. Headphones and earphones are different things.
I know I was just Kidding. c:
how do you hole a card
