      I've been watching Byte Size Tech recently. Apparently the cost of the 5900x is lower (Total cost of ownership), because it'll last you longer and for more generations. 5800x is cheaper, but you'll need an upgrade sooner, making it more expensive, he says.

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  3 года назад

      Yep that makes sense. Im assuming the 5900x will hold its value better too.

      The more I learn about new engine tech the more I wonder if we have to upgrade soon anyway.
      Both the ps5 and the M1 Mac smoke out PCs with higher bandwidth / IO.
      That way they can load in asstes later, therefore drastically reducing the assets the GPU has to worry about at any time.
      It doesn't matter ofc because the M1 doesn't even compete with a 5600x and we'll have much beefier GPUs soon than the ps5.
      However I wonder if different IO tech and DDR5 will have insane performance gains 1-2 years down the road. Let's see how the Radeon unified memory works.
      Interesting times after 10 years of stalemate.

    Vote for a 5900X. It's just the better value when compared to a 5800X. This might also be the last AM4 CPU you might be buying, so it makes sense to get something that will be future proof for years to come. The switch to the Vulkan API will happen at some point as well, and that move has already proven to increase core usage (and the effectiveness of that) in other games.

    If you have a ryzen gen 3, ryzen 36-3900x do this for 5-10 extra fps.
    go to task manager, right click on SC->go to details->right click SC->Set affinity, turn off every second core having only 50% ON, or turn of half of the cores from number 8 forward.
    With my Ryzen 3800X I turn off thread 9-16, leaving only 8 on. This boosts performance greatly. Good luck

    I have an older setup. I got Star Citizen this morning. I had enough gpu (MSI Radeon R9 380 4GB 256-Mbit) I thought my cpu and ram were good. Turns out I had the very weakest of the Intel CPUs that are in the minimum requirements list and my 32GB ram was ddr3 1600MHz. The ram at least was likely acceptable. I just ordered a Ryzen 7 3700x with an ASUS TUF GAMING B450-PLUS II AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard, Corsair Ryzen ready 32GB (8GBx 4 sticks at DDR4 3200MHz) and a great big damn cooler master double fan CPU cooler. I know these new to me components won’t be future proof, but I was able to keep it at $700. I’ll make sure to keep up with your videos for knowledge. Thank you.

    A 2600 / 2600x, 3600x and 5600x you cannot go wrong with either of them. I originally had a 2600 paired with a RTX 2080 and at 1440p I have not really seen much difference with that setup and with my upgrade now with a 3900X paired with the same GPU other than in my development work that takes advantage of all the cores. There was a slight bump as the IPC of the 3000x series processors are better than the 2000 series but wasn't anything drastic. My wife uses a 2600x paired with a GTX 1660ti and SC runs smoothly for her at 1080p. If someone is building a rig just for gaming only, I could never suggest a 3900x / 3950x or 5900x / 5950x. Those processors are overkill for any gaming rig as the majority of the cores will simply sit idle.

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  3 года назад +1

      Agree with all of that! I think the IPC improvement of the 5000 series will be interesting to test, but I don't expect the 5900x to be utilised by SC very much. Very jealous of you and your wife both having a PC for the game!

  • @teahousereloaded

    Mate! You made me so happy.
    I bought a 5600x three weeks ago.
    Was wondering until now if a 3700x would have been the better choice for SC.
    I guess that settles it.
    Ppl justifying their oc 10900k made me insecure. ;)
    Seems like the 3700x also has still some headroom, if it performs essentially the same with 6 cores.

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  3 года назад

      Yep I think you're good! I'm pretty sure the nearly 20% IPC improvement from 3000 to 5000 series means that the 5600x will handily beat the 3700x. Enjoy your new CPU!

    There are several reasons why SMT (hyperthreading) can lower a game's performance:
    - Scheduling for a single thread per core is easier then scheduling for two threads per core.
    - Security mitigations for SMT exploits (Spectre, Meltdown, ...) use no clock cycles when SMT is disabled.
    - Ryzen reserves a portion of the core resources for each thread in case a low usage thread suddenly gets scheduled a increased load.
    - Heat and Power output is higher with SMT ON, limiting boost clock performance in some cases.
    SMT is essentially asking a single core to do the work of multiple cores. There is some overhead associated with managing multiple threads, and that overhead can add latency. It balancing act to ensure the correct thread gets the priority, and overall it is a rather hard problem to solve. If it is solved incorrectly, it can actually impact performance negatively.
    Intel has similar problems with hyper-threading (their version of SMT)... but they have had a lot more time to refine their SMT implementation given that it was first introduced in 2002. But even today, there are certain situations in which disabling hyper-threading can actually improve performance on an Intel CPU.

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  3 года назад

      You are completely right, the hangar is definitely the most consistent place to try to benchmark! In my opinion though, it doesn't really give you any relevant information (the hangars don't really represent any part of the final game). The servers are part of the game (even though they make consistent benchmarking incredibly hard), and so I think you get more useful results when you test the Persistent Universe. But I do sometimes include hangar and area commander results if I have time!

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  3 года назад

      Its a good question! Currently vram isn't really an issue in SC, so you won't see any benefit now (and a 3080ti won't be highly utilized by the engine as it is). But as they optimise and get closer to 'release' in the next few years, and graphics cards start shipping with more and more vram, CIG may end up using more than the 10gb on a 3080. But a lot of people who buy a 3080 now will likely upgrade in a few years anyway. So short answer, I wouldn't worry about vram too much right now, but that could change.

      I changed the amount of cores active in the BIOS. I think you're right that you can do it in windows, but I did it the other way!

    I plan on getting an 8c/16t laptop with a 1660ti GPU soon.
    My question is can it cut down the cores and threads on a laptop as you did on a desktop?
    And if so can you say how?

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  3 года назад +1

      I haven't had any experience turning off cores on a laptop, but my guess is that you should be able to do it. From a quick bit of research it looks like laptop bios' can be more restrictive than desktop (I went into my bios and changed the amount of cores and turned SMT off), so you may have to do it another way. And also you might find that it doesn't help gaming performance, as laptop CPUs are not as powerful as desktop CPUs. Having more cores for background tasks that windows performs might be useful on a laptop. But ultimately, I'm guessing a bit and don't really know!

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  2 года назад +1

      It's actually probably the other way round now- the latest intel CPUs (12th gen) handily beat the ryzen 5000 series in SC, but ryzen has more cores, so will likely be better in productivity. Check out my 12700kf video to see how that performs.

      Unfortunately the game is pretty brutal! It really likes very fast single core performance and roughly 6cores12threads. The only real options you have on that motherboard would be to either upgrade to the k version of the 6700 and overclock as much as possible or the 7700k and do the same. But really that will probably be a waste of money and you'd be better off saving for a new motherboard and CPU. Hopefully CIG will optimise a bit this year!

  • @D.Enniss
    @D.Enniss 3 года назад +1

    This is a wee bit irrelevant as the game is not optimized yet.
    But from my personal experience and opinion, at least 6 cores, like any other game out there. Though in the future a 8 core minimum sounds good to recommend.
