I am a course director in my country Colombia, I started diving at the age of 18 and since then a lifetime has passed. I think that being a diving instructor is a way of life that many of us take, accept and enjoy to the fullest. There must be passion from deep within for this activity that will allow you to continue growing and going towards new goals. And be clear that a good diver never stops learning.
I was a Scuba Instructor for 15 years (10 in SoCal, 5 in Colorado) and only gave it up because my "real" job required me to travel a lot for projects. But I did it as a side gig and enjoyed it a lot. And yes, the pay wasn't all that great. But being part of the staff for a dive shop allowed me to get great prices on my equipment, free air fills, paid dive boat trips (when I was teaching that day), and the opportunity to dive a lot (beach and boat). I loved it, and some day I might get back to it after I retire.
Good video. I've kind of thought about looking to see if there is an option to be a part time instructor or even something else in the dive industry. It would be for the fun and experience, as I already make decent money in my regular job, but I think it would be fun to teach and help offset trip costs.
I worked part time for 5 years. Its easier in "city" rather than "resort" style dive shops. This way you can teach over the weekend to get some free diving and fun experiences :)
@@OceanPancake thanks for that info! I live in a bigger city in Florida and have many dive shops near by. I think I may he able to find something that would allow for a part time instructor.
I'm obviously not Katt, but... The typical single tank diver cannot reach their valve easily. One of the better ways to pull it off is to put a hand between your legs and push on the base of the tank to force it up.
@@OceanPancake @Daniel G Thank you for the reply Katt. You ever thought of doing a video on how you teach proper trim with the tank so low? I am truly confused on this setup. I have always been trained, every driver should be able to reach the valve with the gear on. Banging my head has never been an issue. Trim Buoyancy, weighting, has been thoroughly beaten into my head.
@@shuntao3475 This is what we call Resort Diving Instruction. Quick Dirty, 2-3 days training. These divers generally never dive again, or only at a resort, where there hands are held. If the divers do become serious divers, you get to charge them double to Fix everything. lol.
When I was a kid I made 100 bucks an hour diving for golf balls, it was great! I got bored with diving and sold my gear though. I taught lots of people how to dive, it's a perfect date, it never failed...
Hello Katt. I saw the Title. First Thought was, Having to Deal with people like me. I guess #2 is me. Makeup? I saw a video that took place at an Aquarium. The Makeup can Harm the Wildlife. So is that really a bad thing? Katt, One thing I always liked about you, Your Modesty. Honestly, Beats my job. Only thing I'm good at. Work as an Auto Tech at a Tyre Shop. Making just above Minimum Wage.
Free Air, generally yes, I have heard stories. Nitrox if the shop fills it. In Cozumel, you have a large Tank facility, so we had to pony up for Nitrox. In the US, every shop I taught at, filled for free. Now as an independent, I pay for everything... Trimix, nope you pay for it unless you are teaching the class. Use of equipment, not always. A lot of time, they give you keyman pricing, but still want you to buy their gear for you to advertise.
@@shuntao3475 If the Instructor worked for a Shop. Unless maybe a Small Mom and Pop place. Instructor Trains. Students get the gear from the Shop themselves.
It really depends on the shop and the purpose of the gear. My old dive shops allowed me to borrow gear for free sometimes or heavily discounted. I got half price off scuba gear so I could advertise them:)
I will finish up my divemaster but I think that is about it I'm a lot more into Tech diving, obviously I love diving in the ocean But I sure love caves a whole lot more
And there are more industries that can be chosen for someone who wants to scuba dive for a living. I'd like to become a rescue diver and there is also industrial work to do under water and science to be done there. So people that are not intrested in socializing all day long can still make their passion become their job :)
In Australia there is no out of season. For seasonal working instructors, they frequently travel tot the opposite hemisphere, and others pick up their other hats of : ski instructor, sky diving instructors or similar!
The problem lies in the business model of scuba instruction. Training agencies make more money from training up instructors and have them leave rather than through keeping them in the industry and letting them become experienced.
Very cool vlog! Congrats to that 👍🥳Why have you quit being a scuba diving instructor? Is the job you having now besides videos and studying scuba related? I am just curious because I am doing it the other way around. Firstly regular job in Finance for 9 years after having completed a masters degree in that field. And now I am completing my divemaster in short. 😂😂😂
I now work as a high school teacher (and continue online education for marine conservation). I am an educator at heart, and where I live this is a better fit for my current life. I dive every weekend still for fun :)
@@OceanPancake Very nice, that is also what I have in mind for later. We have a particular study programm to become a teacher in 2 years. But firstly some pro diving 👍
Hi..good video...I'm 31 and im not a good swimmer...i can swim a little though. I am considering pursuing a career as a diving instructor after investing in relevant courses offcourse. Considering my age and swimming capability, do you think i shud take this up?
You can start, but you will have to increase your swimming skills... Check out the requirements for rescue diver (which is needed before becoming an instructor). Hopefully as you dive and are around water you can improve your swimming skills. Don't do the classes back to back, make sure you are confident in your skills before moving on... People's lives will literally depend on you. Age shouldn't be a problem so long as overall health is good
Lover your enthusiasm and positive energy! Sounds rough being a dive instructor. Like being on vacation 24-7 but honestly there is work, dedication and a honed skill set involved 😃 Takes a heap of patients when working such a diverse group of students and trying to keep tabs on critical safety points but thats all part of the passion for such a carrier choice I suspect. Drop by my channel for some cool recovery dives. Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter
What an irritating comment … the only place your going to make good money is in a first world country with a very good economy ….so enlighten us and btw your smiley faces suck
Recommend that you use a better microphone; one that is attached to your clothing. If you are hungover you have NO BUSINESS taking students underwater. They deserve your best and if you are hungover they are not getting your best. Finally I am SO tired hearing about climate change. I believe it exists but it is natural, not man made.
I went to your homepage and clicked on the link to get to your patreon but i get an error that the site can not be found. I would recommend to check this!

I think thats a beautiful way of putting it. Certainly we need to keep growing and learning to be the best version of themselves.
Dealing with a non scuba instructor manager, it's the worst. Specially in resorts. Good video.

Great Vid Katt. Just curious, why where the tanks so low on many of the divers, just did not seem like they could reach the valve while trimmed out?

The typical single tank diver cannot reach their valve easily. One of the better ways to pull it off is to put a hand between your legs and push on the base of the tank to force it up.
In recreational diving most divers do not reach their tank valve, to stop them from hitting their head on the valve :)
