I'm an engineer by day and a dive master for fun, with aspirations to become a scuba instructor at some point in my life. While I can't relate to the job security issues and financial stress, the points pertaining to dealing with people of various personalities resonated with me. It can be both rewarding and challenging. Here's a quick story shedding light on the liability aspect of it that makes me question whether I want to become an instructor or not. I took 2 newbies diving this past weekend in a quarry. I planned the dive with them and told them exactly what we were going to do. Being that both of them were new divers, we did frequent air checks. I turned the dive around when the first guy reached 1500 psi, and we started the safety stop with about 500 psi in the lowest tank. Towards the end of our safety stop, one of the guys just bolted towards the bottom and swam away. Diving in a quarry, the visibility wasn't so good. In the few seconds that I took to tell his dive buddy to finish the safety stop and surface, he totally disappeared from sight. I had to chase after him, find him, and bring him back up. This took a few minutes, all of which were quite stressful. Being a new diver, he didn't quite have his breathing right. We surfaced with him only having 130 psi in his tank. I checked my dive computer afterwards and I had to swim down to about 55-60' to get him. He got an earful from me, but he would've been in a whole lot more trouble had I not chased after him.
Thank you for sharing that story with us! It's so important to realize that even when you do your best to do the right thing , people may not listen because they think they know better or simply become scared! Patience is key!
Sounds like the Navy. Not a Job, Its an Adventure!! Think I would like starting out as a Helper. I've been told that I tend to be detail oriented. Love meeting new people. Help whenever I can.
Wanted to see how my husband behaved around people wearing those costumes but realised he was training to be patient with all kinds of people. Did not know how tough and painful it could get. Thanks. It looks great on the outside, very misleading for people like me.
Is there a link to your ear issue? I have bad tinnitus and want to pursue a career in scuba diving. Last time I dived on my OW1 I heard weird beeping noises I thought it was the dive boat but apparently it was my tinnitus. weird.
Yes please! I got an ear infection while surfing a year ago, and it never quite healed all the way, it's still clogged and opens up for a moment once in a while nowadays. Just yesterday, I did a Try Scuba class, and I'm feeling a bit sick in the throat with the same ear kinda agitated. I'm afraid the doctor will send me home with pills again :/ some insight would be great! I care so much about my hearing and ear health! Thanks
If you get affected by the covid19 can you like learn to dive maybe a few years after that? (I have a very high chance to get it because there are people in my home which still go to the office because it is required to in their field of work)
Hi, you mentioned health issues and I have a question regarding that: how could you afford to get treatment with a salary so low? I mean, when I travel I have to take extra health insurance(one that cover "dangerous sport"), and that alone cost more than the basic salary of most scuba instructor... Does the dive center you work for cover health insurance?
really? In Germany the yearly rate of a Recreational Diver's insurance costs 50 Euros (~50 USD today) while the Instructors insurance is 200 euros per year max. It covers all health treatments in case of dive-related accidents, as well as damages caused by you to boats or other infrastructure while diving. It covers damages and treatment worldwide.
So I have communicated with you before about coming there. I will be there February 2021. I an very interested in both diving with you and becoming a guide. I'm coming from Playa Del Carmen where I have just trained 3 months and now dive master SSI! Where is your address in Indonesia?
Hey Katt, I hope you are doing well!! One doubt m having Question - I m from India, scuba diving in India is pretty much rare because we don't have a proper training center here! So, I am an IT guy and want to change my career because I love animals whether they are aquatic or wild Also, partially I play soccer as well in my free time. I want to start my career as a scuba diver( nt looking forward to be an instructor). - Can, I take this as a full time career? - From where, can I start this? - Which places in world pay good amount of money for this? Because living is necessity - From your vision should we go for a full time or part time career in this? Can you give me proper guidance on this please. Also, I am having many doubts like this. So, where can I reach out to you?

That is terrifying. Did he say why in hell he decided to go on his own like that?
Wow, what an idiot.
@@marcosdelcueto5090 He told me he saw some fish and went after it.
One of the many reasons why you shouldn't be an Instructor. Dive briefs are important.
I remember years ago, I saw it on TV. Had to do with Nitrogen Bubbles and the Vertebrae. I forget, Something about suspected back injuries.
I’d like to hear about the ear infection! (: love the vids I am in the process of getting open water certified!
It's good to be aware of what can happen, so make sure to take care of your ears!
Hi, I would have added a reason N°6 : in case you want a family life with young children, ...
Great video. As a new diver who is struggling with ear issues I would love to hear any advice you have....
Thanks for fixing your audio.. it makes the content much more interesting.,.
I'm glad it's working better :) thanks for letting me know
@@OceanPancake that's a big thumbs up to young lady....
A lot of truth and valid points.
Glad you enjoyed it! Let me know if there is anything else you would else!!

That's a very good point! A whole life and adventure
@@OceanPancake I have my moments from time to time.
Tough job...very true...
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Note that the wording ("with") of the video title can be misunderstood that Azul unlimited is bad. Rather edit title "hosting / featuring Azul .."

You are awesome Cat. You not want to give it up and sail around the world?

Make sure you go to a dive doctor, they usually have pretty good ideas and advice for ear related issues

You can still learn to dive anytime, but it's just worth knowing that the tourism industry can be affected and it can be difficult at times.
That was a fantastic video. Sarah is is an excellent speaker, and I appreciate these points. Great job!

I’m in golden handcuffs at the moment, but even without don’t think I could do a job that involves being helpful to people for so long 😂
Yup! It's important people realize that it takes a lot of work and effort to be a dive instructor!!
Mom taught me, your bubbles will always tell you which way Is up, particularly important when cave diving.
Hii...will be nice to see video on your ear issue...just to let you know...im a EAR NOSE THROAT SURGEON..😊
Thanks! I will never become a instructor with Azul, sounds sketchy. I will watch the video later.
What do you do now?
I get to run my podcast and work in education :)
I will become a dive master soon but instructor not at all :)
Feel the same way..
We wanna hear about your hearing issue 😊
Okay will add it to the list!
Thanks! This tells me what I already knew: Diving Instructor isn't for me.
What is that glowing flux capacitor behind Sarah? Lol.
i want to hear about your ear issues
I will definitely make a video about it!
Your no longer a teacher? Where are you now?
I am a teacher, just a different sort :)
Good for you katt

It's okay for a part-time job but full time I would not. But don't do it with PADI it's expensive find another agency.
🙄🖕 its very sad to watch negative people ...
